‘NEW CRISIS LOOMS AT LETTERKENNY HOSPITAL’ STAFF WARN

reiTHE re-opening of the Accident & Emergency Department at Letterkenny General Hospital later this week following last summer’s flood damage is “masking” a real crisis at the campus, stressed staff have told Donegal Daily.

The ground floor of the new medical block will re-open at 8am on Wednesday, marking a remarkable turnaround following the devastation of the flood.

Staff however insist there just aren’t enough nurses – or beds – to cope anymore at the hospital.

Even Head Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Dr Sinead O’Gorman, told Health Minister James Reilly during his visit to the hospital last week they don’t have enough staff to cope.

The staff who are there complain that they are effectively in “crisis management” all the time at a hospital which receives the least funding per patient of any other hospital in the State – often half the funding of hospitals in Cork and Dublin, and a third less than patients attending Sligo Regional Hospital.

“There are too many people with clipboards in the place telling us to get on with it,” warned one experienced nurse.

“The fact is we don’t have enough staff and we don’t have enough beds so we may be moving back into new facilities, but we will be having the same old headaches with overcrowding.”

The medic predicted that there would “inevitably be a repeat” of previous incidents at the hospital where elderly patients had to be left on trolleys, often for many hours.

“There’s a lot of spin and gloss about the hospital,” said another senior medic.

“No-one wants to be seen criticising a hospital; but this is not directed at staff. They’re incredible and they work extremely hard to keep things going but it is all going to crash again and the real fear is that we lose a patient because of it.

“Our politicians need to stand up for us more. Simple as that. And their words should never be seen as a criticism of staff but as a support for them.”

Morale at the hospital is low, according to other staff members.

Many critical posts remain unfilled; some staff have left and returned as locums.

And student nurses continue to work hard, knowing that there won’t be a decent job for them in Letterkenny at the end of their studies – with a plane ticket out of Ireland their best option.

“People outside the hospital need to know what’s going on inside it,” said another medic.

“It might look great; but a building is no use to anyone without the people to staff it.”

NEW CASTING AGENCY HOPES TO TAP INTO DONEGAL’S ACTING TALENT

A new casting agency set up in Co Donegal hopes to tap into acting talent across the county and give aspiring actors a chance to star on stage and screen.

Karen Gorman (right).

Karen Gorman (right).

Karen Gorman is already a household name after setting up her Speech and Drama Academy ten years ago with venues in Letterkenny and Stranorlar.

But now she is applying her skills in helping students to make the crossover from drama classes to actual roles.

Running the business with her husband Garry Gorman B.TECH ED., GRAD. DIP Arts, Karen’s Academy run a programme of acting performances from September to December.

The students, from age three right up to adults, also have acting performance exams with the Irish Board of Speech and Drama.

Developing from her Academy, Karen B.A., H.DIP.LS, AIB SD was inspired to set up a casting agency when she learned of her students’ struggles to apply their skills to an acting career.

“I have found that people who come to my class are quite frustrated at the lack of opportunity to present themselves up here in the North West. So one thing led to another and I’ve spent the last five months really getting to know the proper ins-and-outs of the business within the country, and it’s just grown from there.

“I felt that people [here] needed somebody to represent them, to bring them out around the country and to the UK as well – to represent them and bring opportunities their way… we’re trying to bring what’s available in larger cities and make the whole process more convenient.”

Karen’s background has given her ample grounding to base her Speech and Drama Academy, as well as her new casting agency, on.

She has directed and produced a number of productions for An Grianan Theatre in Letterkenny.

She is also a national adjudicator and examiner with the Irish Board of Speech and Drama and thus has travelled around the country and seen the talent available:

“There’s such a huge array of untapped talent, and I’ve noticed that new faces are very welcome in this business.”

One of the agency’s most recent activities was a sign-up day with Katy Moylan from casting agency Fishpond. The event took place on Sunday 23rd February in Letterkenny: “we had our current and new clients attend a sign-up session with information on auditions, castings and how to do best at them. That was only on Sunday and from that Tuesday we had a multitude of opportunity coming in.”

Most recently, Karen had students going for auditions for a new feature film set in Dublin.

In March, Lisa Cannon from TV3 will be coming to deliver an Acting for Camera course to Karen’s students.

The course will cover areas such as autocues, presenting to camera, audition techniques and the softer skills required for camera.

Karen enthusiastically considered the current state of her agency, having only been set up from Christmas.

“We already have a huge number of clients in our books – we have a TV presenter, a writer from RTE and people who have starred in RTE programs, actors and actresses from TNaG, and involvement with TV3 from Lisa Cannon.”

On her hopes for the future, Karen stated: “We just want to keep growing and growing, and my hope and dream really is to bring as many opportunities as possible to people involved in this area, from tiny tots right up to adults. Our clients are from throughout Ireland and abroad and we look forward to constantly expanding and developing links. ”

JUSTICE MINISTER MUST BE BRAVE ON GARDA REFORM – McBREARTY

$
0
0

Independent Cllr Frank McBrearty is more than qualified to comment on what many deem to be the need for Garda reform.

Cllr Frank McBrearty

Cllr Frank McBrearty

Here he argues the need for that reform and how Alan Shatter can still become a respected Justice Minister.

“The decision made by the Supreme Court this week on the right to legal advice in Garda Custody and in particular the interrogation of citizens has clearly given the Government in my opinion, no option but to implement the reforms which we were promised by previous Governments and the recommendations of the Morris Tribunal.

“These reforms are needed in order to protect the citizens of the Country from corrupt gardai . The establishment of a Police Authority which will Police the Police(Gardai) will ensure the proper oversight, checks and balances are in place which will mean that we have accountability right up to the rank of Garda Commissioner.

“The establishment of Policing Boards in every Garda District will ensure that community policing is at the heart of Policing and that Senior Garda management will be held accountable Locally. GSOC now needs to be made completely Independent with immediate effect which will ensure that our citizens have confidence that any complaints made against the force are independently investigated.

“If we look at Northern Ireland and the UK they have implemented huge changes to their Police force and what they have got, we should have. Irish citizens living in Northern Ireland and the UK have greater rights than Irish citizens living in the Rep of Ireland.

“The importance of the McBrearty Supreme Court case has never been more important now because of the issue’s that have not changed since our arrests over 17 years ago.

“I had a meeting last Monday with Minister Brendan Howlin at Government buildings and I relayed to him that it was inevitable now that the Government needed to establish a Public Inquiry.I also advised him that this Independent Judicial Public inquiry should have 3 strands. Strand 1 to investigate policing in the past. Strand 2 to investigate policing in the present and strand 3 to look at policing into the future.

“The inquiry needs to be given the powers to make findings of fact in Irish Law and not opinions which are open to legal challenge. The terms of reference cannot be restricted as was in the Morris Tribunal as senior members of the Gardai/management are not held accountable.

“So why is our Supreme Court case so important for the Citizens of the Country?, it is important because if we are successful it will protect all the rights of citizens equally which is enshrined in our Constitution, but sadly not adhered to by the state.

“The example of this can be seen in the Morris Tribunal where we the victims were expected to fund legal representations on a daily basis which ordinary citizens can not afford, you will see from the Morris Tribunal that the state and its agencies were fully funded on a daily basis.

“The word that is often used in our courts is Natural justice, where is the Natural Justice for ordinary citizens. The scales of Justice are supposed to be evenly balanced, this isn’t the case in our Justice system at present. Our Supreme Court case is not about trawling over what happened to us or any of the problems we endured in our fight for Justice as we have cleared our names.

“This case is fundamental to ensuring that all citizens have their constitutional rights protected especially in Government established inquiries. I was a guest speaker on Thursday at the Rally in Mullingar to support Sgt Maurice McCabe and I was delighted that people had the courage to stand outside a Garda Station in support of a member of An Garda Siochana, who has had the courage to stand up to the culture of corruption that exists in our force.

“I commend Sgt McCabe and the 300 + members of the public that were there to support him. This would not have happened 17 years ago and the anger that is in the country presently wont go away until we get the reform we are entitled to as Irish citizens.

“I hope that certain sections of the media now understand why our Supreme Court case is so important, the rights of our citizens have to be protected from the abuse of powers the state sometimes inflicts on ordinary people. “A threat to Justice anywhere is a threat to Justice everywhere”.

“The Minister should now have the courage to begin the reform and if he does, we might have a Justice Minister that could be respected but if he doesn’t then Alan Shatter will be remembered as others were as, in my opinion – Ministers for Injustice”.

Frank McGlynn has managed to drag Donegal back into their league encounter with Meath at MacCumhaill Park this afternoon.

Meath were not fancied to put it up to Donegal at all.

But one stage the visitors, with a slight breeze, looked like they were going to run away with it leading by 0-7 to 0-2.

Glenfin man McGlynn snatched an important goal to make it 1-3 to Meath’s 0-7 leaving just a point between the teams.

But Michael Newman hit back for Meath almost instantly to make it 1-3 to 1-7.

Donegal have managed to pull back a coupe of points including a huge effort from Michael Murphy to make it Donegal 1-5 Meath 1-7 at half-time.

There’s a large crowd here at MacCumhaill Park and Donegal will he happy with the scoreline going in at the break.

They must up their game in midfield however, if they are to keep up their 100% record in the league.

LAST GASP MURPHY POINT SNATCHES A DRAW FOR DONEGAL AGAINST MEATH

A determined second half display culminating in a last-gasp point by Michael Murphy saw Donegal grab a draw against a determined Meath at MacCumhaill Park this afternoon.

The visitors weren’t given a chance coming to the North-West for this league encounter today but their panel had different ideas.

In fact, they raced to a 0-7 to 0-2 lead at one stage putting it up to Donegal.

Jim McGuinness’ team, helped by a goal by Frank McGlynn, managed to narrow the gap to just two points, going in 1-7 to 1-5 at the interval.

The league leaders were suffering in the middle of the park and the manager tried to address this my bringing on Neil Gallagher for Rory Kavanagh at half-time.

He also added some penetration up front by drafting in Darach O’Connor in place of Brick Molloy.

It appeared to have the desired effect as Donegal began to pick off the points.

But Meath refused to wave the white flag and points from Graham Reilly and Michael Newman kept them in contention.

In a nip and tuck second half, both sets of forward swapped points and the advantage as they raced to the final whistle in front of a large crowd.

Reilly looked as if he had done enough to secure the points for Meath putting them ahead 1-12 to 1-11.

However, Murphy was given a late free but when it popped it short, you sensed that Donegal had blown their chance and their 100% league record.

Meath must have been kicking themselves when the big Glenswilly man got yet another chance fro a free to level the scores.

This time he didn’t miss.

The visitors will feel short-changed but Donegal will draw encouragement from a game in which they had to dig deep.

It was gale force winds that greeted the Alliance to Rosapenna Golf Club on Saturday, As usual the members of a winter Alliance made light of the conditions and relished playing in conditions not often encountered.

The course defeated the attempts of 55 members to make good scores but not that of the 56th.

There is one man who is in the form of his life.

That is Michael McGeady he followed up his 60 last week in Dunfanaghy with a superlative display that showed he has no real weakness in his game.

He was out among the first in the teeth of the storm.

He went out in one over par dropped strokes at the 5th and 7th these were compensated for with a birdie at the 9th.He got back to level par after a birdie at the 11th two more arrived at 13th and 14th a bogey at 16th followed by two pars to finish left him one under.

He is handicapped at plus three and he scored 34 points in the Nett section and so was first in the gross as well.

The only person who was near him in the Gross section was Brian McElhinney who finished on 79 that is 8 shots behind and Eddie McHugh was 4 points behind in the Nett,

The other play of note was an eagle at the 17th by Padraig MacLochlann.

To-day finished the golfer of the Season Competition.

In the Gross it was won by Michael McGeady on 72, Brian McElhinney was second on 61 and the young Professional from Letterkenny Finnian O’Doherty had 29.

In the Nett section it was a very closely fought affair.

The champion from last year Odran McGettigan was leading going in to to-days competition by one from Eddie McHugh and four from his brother Maurice.

However the gale force conditions blew his title away when Eddie McHugh triumphed and then he was beaten on the break of tie for runner up by Maurice.

The last competition of the year will take place in a fortnight time when the alliance play for The Captains Prize.

This will be one prize Michael McGeady will not win this year as he is the captain.

His prize will be competed for in North West Golf club.

Next competition Captains day (Mr Michael McGeady) North West G.C. on 22nd March 2014.
