ONE IN FIVE CHILDREN STILL OBESE – REPORT

$

0

HSEThe Health Service Executive today published the latest Irish results from COSI, the European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative. COSI monitors childhood obesity levels by measuring children in sample schools all over Europe.

This 2012 data is the third set of results to be published to date, and involved a nationally representative sample of 7, 9 and 11 year old children from a mix of Irish urban, rural and disadvantaged (DEIS) schools.

Dr. Stephanie O’Keeffe, National Director of Health and Wellbeing, HSE, said that: ‘The 2012 COSI results show that more than 20% of our children remain overweight or obese, but that rates have either decreased or stabilised in some age groups. This is welcome news, but the overall concern about the level of overweight among our children remains.’

The study was carried out for the HSE by the National Nutrition Surveillance Centre, UCD. The large study comprises 12,236 children’s measurements in 163 schools collected on three occasions in 2008, 2010 and again in 2012.

Prof. Cecily Kelleher from UCD said today: ‘The rates of overweight and obesity have shown decreases at age 7, and stabilisation at age 9, while the overall incidence remains of concern. Those with responsibility for caring for children and educating the public on health and wellbeing therefore have much to do to continue to tackle this issue.’

‘Critically, the observed reduction or leveling off is not happening in DEIS or disadvantaged schools, and this has implications for all, including health and public service partners, particularly those working on implementation of the Healthy Ireland framework. We must ensure that our efforts are focused on bringing the improvements demonstrated by this data to bear on all our children, particularly children who are disadvantaged by poverty, and education, housing and transport deficits, among others.’

Dr. O’Keeffe continued; ‘‘Healthy Ireland, the Government Framework for Improved Health and Wellbeing seeks to proactively improve the health and wellbeing of the population and we know that tackling childhood obesity requires the whole of government and whole of society response that this framework can deliver.

‘Evidence also tells us that overweight and obesity in childhood tracks into adulthood, and that the earlier we intervene to prevent our children from becoming an unhealthy weight, the better their childhood and adult health, and quality and length of life, will be. By identifying at an early stage children whose weight is out of line with their growth for their age, we can offer them and their parents the supports they need to get the balance right as they grow up.’

Dr. Cate Hartigan, Head of Health Promotion and Improvement, HSE, outlined a new growth monitoring project being introduced in September of this year: ‘Later in 2014, the health services will introduce a pilot growth monitoring programme in primary schools, as part of the school health check for 5-6 year olds. This will commence in 4 pilot HSE areas – Mayo, Laois-Offaly, Dublin 15 and Cork City.

‘Parents will be given feedback on their child’s growth, and if required, advice on steps they can take at home to ensure they rebalance diet and activity levels as their child grows. Any children whose growth results show signs of clinical obesity will be offered a community based lifestyle intervention programme, based on the successful W82GO programme delivered by the Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street. ‘

A man told a shop assistant he would be sorry if he did not give him his money back for what he claimed were a pair of faulty football boots.

Lifestyle Sports in Letterkenny.

Lifestyle Sports in Letterkenny.

Johnny McDonagh appeared in court charged with using threatening and abusive behaviour in public.

The 22 year old pleaded guilty to the charge which took place at Lifestyle Sports in Letterkenny on January 10th, 2013.

McDonagh had bought the €90 boots in December 2012 but returned them a month later claiming they were faulty.

He arrived in the shop and an argument ensued and he told the shop assistant he would be sorry if he did not refund him the cash.

McDonagh, of The Big Isle, Letterkenny, later called to the shop and claimed he would rob another pair of boots worth €200.

Letterkenny District Court was told the manufacturer had since refunded McDonagh for the boots.

The incident happened when McDonagh was serving a suspended sentence.

Solicitor Frank Dorrian said his client, who has 53 previous convictions, has a short temper and was trying to get his life together.

Judge Paul Kelly said it was sad to see McDonagh back in court when he had been “off the radar” for almost a year.

He fined McDonagh €200.

Last year's parade in Letterkenny.

Last year’s parade in Letterkenny.

As a national holiday everyone is off work and traditionally Letterkenny St.Patrick’s Day parade attracts a large number of spectators.

Letterkenny Chamber President Gerard Grant said “St. Patrick’s Day is an important event in the calendar for Letterkenny. This year it once again falls on a weekend and we expect large crowds in town to celebrate, not just on the Monday.

“The Parade is a great family event in Letterkenny. This year we have five bands, sports groups, youth groups and many of the usual community entries as well as the Irish Army colour party. We hope the parade will be colourful and lively celebrating international culture.”

Letterkenny Chamber is the sole organiser of the Parade and it relies on financial contributions from large and small businesses and ask other businesses. It is a real voluntary effort by members of the Chamber and we are proud to play our part in this important day.

“But this year we really want to make it even more vibrant, colourful and lively and we want to remind people that an entry doesn’t have to be a full scale float, we love to see clubs and societies dressed up walking along the street, this can be every bit as effective. If you have thought about entering and want to know more please do let us know as soon as posssible. ”

The Parade starts at 3pm on Monday 17th March preceded by entertainment on the viewing platform at Market Square. The parade makes its way from Pearse Road via Port Road, through Main Street past the reviewing platform at Market Square to finish in Old Town.

On the day the independent judges view the parade with various categories in mind including community, sports, youth, band and dance. Each category winner receives a plaque and the overall winning entry receives the Danny Doherty Perpetual Plaque plus a cheque for €500.

To enter a float or for more information contact Letterkenny Chamber on 074 9124866 or email anne@letterkennychamber.com.

SUPPORT FOR SPORTS SHOP WORKERS AS ELVERYS GOES INTO EXAMINERSHIP

The jobs of a number of workers in Elvery’s Sports Stores in Letterkenny and Donegal Town hang in the balance after the appointment of an examiner.

Elvery's Sport Shop in Letterkenny

Elvery’s Sport Shop in Letterkenny

The Sinn Féin EU candidate for the Midlands Northwest constituency, Matt Carthy, has voiced his support for workers.

Carthy said Elverys Sports is Ireland’s oldest sports retailer, is fully Irish-owned and employs 700 people across 23 counties.

“There are two branches in County Donegal – in Letterkenny and in Donegal town and every effort must be made to save the jobs in these branches.

“Workers in Elverys are unsurprisingly concerned for their future despite communications from the examiner that jobs will be “protected at all costs”.

“Saving all 700 of these jobs must be of the utmost priority in any deal.

“NAMA took the decision to seek the appointment of the examiner. While NAMA’s overriding commercial objective is to generate the best achievable financial return for the taxpayer, its work must also contribute to employment and economic recovery and to the achievement of broader social and economic policy objectives.

“The saving of 700 jobs and the creation of a healthy Irish business, sustainable into the future, must be central to the achievement of these goals.

“I support the Elverys workers in their fight to hold on to their jobs and livelihoods.”

MAGNIFICO! DONEGAL GYMNASTS TO REPRESENT IRELAND IN ITALY

finesseDonegal’s Gymnastic Display Team, Finesse along with 21 gymnasts from Dublin will have the honour of representing Ireland at this year’s international Festival Del Sole, Italy.

The Festival Del Sole is the biggest international gymnastics for all (G.F.A.) event in the Mediterranean area.

For a whole week, the city of Riccione is turned into a huge gymnastic stage where more than 4,000 gymnasts from around the world will perform at their best.

The Festival Del Sole was established in Riccione in 1989. It was the first of its kind in Italy: never before, have a Mediterranean country tried to organise an international event of general gymnastics. The Festival proved to be a great success right from its first edition, attracting 58 teams from 11 different European countries. Since then the festival has doubled in size.

In 2010 the Festival Del Sole celebrated its tenth edition: Riccione was literally invaded by more than 3,400 gymnasts from 19 countries around the world who performed in front of 50,000 spectators. It was a very special edition that culminated with the great closing ceremony in conjunction with Riccione’s very own Notte Rosa. The last edition took place on July 2012. They introduced a fourth sports Arena in order to allow more gymnasts to perform—peaking at 4,300 participants and over 20 countries.

“To be a part of the Irish team is a huge achievement for these young Donegal gymnasts,” said Tony King.

“Finesse was formed just over two years ago and the team has since gone from strength to strength after receiving back to back medals at the London Gymnastics Festival and also having the honour of closing last year’s Gymfusion at the millennium forum Derry as part of their city of culture celebrations.

“Everyone involved within the club deserves some credit; there is a huge amount of commitment involved, from the parents doing fundraising to the gymnasts spending countless hours training and the coaches for all the hard work and effort that they have put into getting this team to where they are today and making opportunities such as this one possible.”

Emergency personnel at the scene of last Wednesday’s crash in Letterkenny.

BREAKING NEWS: A suspect in a 60km Garda chase across County Donegal is on the run tonight.

Martin Stokes, who is 20 and from Cornshell Fields in Derry City, was arrested by a Garda traffic corps officer in Letterkenny last Wednesday following a day of drama across the county.

Gardaí from Glenties had pursued a Nissan Primera car from Ardara along a 60km route – via both main and side roads – before the chase came to an end in Letterkenny when the car crashed into another vehicle just outside the town’s fire station.

Stokes was granted bail in Sligo District Court last Thursday, but was sent to prison for a week in relation to a previous case.

However he was released on Saturday – and has skipped bail.

This evening in Letterkenny Judge Paul Kelly issued a warrant for his immediate arrest after Stokes failed to appear at a sitting of the District Court.

Stokes solicitor Patsy Gallagher said he had been told his client had been released from prison on Saturday, two days into a seven day sentence.

Last Thursday’s court heard Stokes faced a total of 25 dangerous driving charges.

The court heard from Garda Elaine Kavanagh, from Glenties Garda Station, that Stokes was also facing 11 other charges in connection with the alleged incident including failing to stop for members of An Garda Siochana and hit-and-run allegations relating to the De Valera Road crash.

Traffic Corps Garda Paul McGee gave evidence of arresting Stokes in Letterkenny not long afterwards. Stokes was wearing just one shoe at the time.

Judge Kevin Kilrane had set bail at €1,000 with an independent surety of €1,000 which had been met last Saturday and Stokes was released from prison.
