SAY NO TO SCHOOL CUTS IN DONEGAL – McCONALOGUE

Fianna Fáil is holding two public meetings in Donegal next week as part of its campaign to stop the cuts to small rural schools.Charlie McConalogueTD

The first meeting takes place at 8pm in Friel’s Hotel in Raphoe next Tuesday (18th March) and the second is in the Milford Inn in Milford next Thursday (20th March).

It comes as more small schools in Co Donegal and across the North West face the prospect of more cuts in September.

Fianna Fáil’s Education Spokesperson Charlie McConalogue explained, “These meetings are about giving our communities a chance to stand together against the cuts to our local schools.

“The threat to small rural schools remains very real, with more schools across rural Ireland at risk of losing staff in September. This is a direct result of a targeted attack on small schools announced by the Education Minister Ruairí Quinn in his first Budget in office.

“It bears all the hallmarks of a sneaky campaign by a Dublin-based Minister who is intent on forcing the amalgamation of small rural schools in Donegal. The loss of any of our local schools would be felt right across the community. It’s time that we all pull together and say no. We must stand up against a highly damaging policy that could result in the loss of yet another vital local service in this region.

“Unfortunately this seems like just the latest attack on community services in Donegal. Not only have our local health services, our community garda resources, our post offices and our local businesses all come under attack, the future of our local schools are now doubt. The Government is going about this in the sneakiest way possible. A series of cuts to resources coupled by deliberate uncertainty is all adding to the threat of what is a vital local service.

“I am urging parents, teachers, community groups and public representatives from all sides to come to these meetings next week and stand up for our local schools.”

GOLF NEWS: GERARD DUFFY IN SENSATIONAL FORM AT BARNHILL

Letterkenny Golf Notes

Wednesday was a golfing day of two “halves” as far as the weather was concerned-dry, fresh and with spells of sunshine in the morning turning to cold, chilly rain in the afternoon. GOLF LOGO

Of the die-hard regulars that cannot wait for the season proper to begin, it was one of the 2014 Golfer of the Year Cat.1 favourites that stood proud on the rostrum to collect first prize.

Gerard Duffy [5] began with uncharacteristic bogeys at the first two holes and had to wait until the par five 11th before recording his first birdie of the day, followed by birdies at 15th and 18th, but slipping up in between with a double bogey at 17th to finish with a two over gross 74 and a stableford 39pts.

Reading of the card shows an impressive level par score from 3rd hole.

Leading the way for the cat. 4 brigade was that category’s coordinator himself Gerry O’ Sullivan [17] who, with the help of a birdie at par three 16th, recorded 21pts on inward nine for a closely run second place finish of 38pts.

Captains’ Drive-In:

The long awaited Captains’ Drive-In, regarded by all members as a “fun day out”, was indeed enjoyed by all of the ninety-eight players who took part, and also by the twenty odd members and visitors who turned out to wish our captain’s every success during their term of office.

Before driving the club into year 2014, club Captain Tom Mc Donagh and Lady Captain Catherine Cooke-Harkin greeted all members and visitors alike with a warm and hearty welcome, suggested that they enjoy the day for what it was and wished all players every success in their competitive endeavours throughout the forthcoming season.

Having partaken of the beverages, scones, cakes and finger food provided by the gracious lady members, everyone descended onto the first tee to cheer the Captains’ and President, Mr Barry Ramsay, into performing their first official duty of 2014.

The competition was played in a three ball scramble format and taking the first “official” prizes of the calendar year were Joe Brown, Conor Friel and, captained by the inimitable Karen Mc Glinchey, returned a winning score of 61.7 nett.

In runner-up spot were Padraig Munnelly, James A. Mc Daid and Conor Malone, whilst a close third were Joe Diver, Graham Donaghy and Vera Kearney.

Although every team would have their tales of woe, the three ball of Marie Keating would have been most disappointed.

While Marie herself scored a magnificent eagle at the par 5 second hole and , having returned a possible winning number, they were unfortunately disqualified for having a wrong handicap on the card!

A lesson for all of us for the new season.

All entrants are advised that the on-line booking is now open for the St. Patrick’s Day Cup to be played on Monday next, 17th March. NB: The mats will NOT be in play. Book early.

Members and visitors are reminded that there will be a 4 person CLUB CLASSIC for both men and ladies on Good Friday, 18th April. Get your team ready now!

Congratulation to Finnian O’ Doherty who finished a very creditable 3rd place in the Golfer of the Year Gross section in the North West Golfing Alliance and to Letterkenny club members Jamie Foley, Kieran Ryan and Eamonn O’ Carroll who were prizewinners in the final outing of the season played on the Sandy Hills course, Rosapenna, on Saturday last.

The juvenile coordinators, Gerard Duffy and Catherine Cooke-Harkin have advised that they will be holding an information evening on junior/juvenile golf in the clubhouse on Sunday next, 23rd March at 7pm.

All juniors, parents and guardians are asked to attend.

There will be a talk on where the club is taking junior golf and, for the first time in the club’s history, we will have two junior captains this year, boys and girls.

They will be introduced on the night as will both junior convenors.

There will also be a power point display organized by our clubs’ child officer Eileen Williamson who has put in a tremendous amount of work for junior golf in the past few years. Many thanks Eileen.

There will be information on everything to do with fixtures and child safety.

We will also have Seamus Clinton, the club’s PGA professional, available on the night and Seamus has agreed a very good discounted rate for juniors who want to learn the game.

Team Quiz Final:

On Friday night last it was standing room only when Hugh McClafferty ,quiz master extraordinaire, with scorekeeper Niall O’Donnell at his side, called for order to start the final night of the 2014 Team Quiz. Sixteen teams had taken part, playing three matches in four groups, to find the finalists [and eventual winners] of “The Brains of Barnhill”

There was one outstanding quarter final game to be decided, and it was Brian O’Reilly’s team who beat Anthony Delap’s to join the other three teams in the semi-final.

In the first semi-final, Ivan Fuery’s team were defeated in a very tense match by Michael O’Maille’s.

In the second semi-final encounter, Brian o’Reilly’s team gained revenge for an earlier defeat by Barry Ramsay‘s four.

In each case it was a single question that decided matters.

So, as the tension grew, the crowd grew quieter for the final between Michael and Brian’s teams, facing each other for the title of “Quiz team of the Year”.

The match was very close throughout and the lead changed hands a number of times before Brian’s team of Ann Condon, Ronnatt O’Reilly and Rory O’Carroll proved to be the superior and gained bragging rights [for the summer at least).

In most matches this year, it has been the “putting” that was decisive, but this was not the case on the final night where it really was down to exceptional, positive answering.

Of course, there were also moments of merriment to break the tension. Will Anthony ever live down his incorrect reflex answer as to “who invented the steam engine?”

And what about that tense moment in the final when Michael answered a question correctly only to realize that it was the turn of Brian’s team to do so!!!!.

In fairness, they had indicated they knew the answer themselves-mar yea!!!!!!!

So what makes up a successful, winning team? That they have to be able to pool their knowledge, the winners showing it was having a knowledge of cannon law.

Take another bow Ann, medical knowledge that was Rory and Ronnatt plus knowing the geography of South America.

The final ingredient was a team captain who was able to keep his team focused and disciplined as well as taking on the putting role and thus sparing the rest of the team this onerous task.

Club Captain, Tom McDonagh in presenting the winners and runners with their prizes was lavish in his praise of Hugh McClafferty for his unstinting efforts to research all the questions and answers, a mammoth task involving hundreds of questions. He also thanked all who had taken part and the crowd who turned up each night.

Browns on the Green, the club’s bar and restaurant franchisee, have fulfilled their promise of maintaining the social ambiance of the club by welcoming back the successful Donal Casey & Friends for St. Patrick’s Week-end Celebrations on Sunday 16th March, commencing at 9pm. Everyone, members and non-members, are very welcome.

buildingNYCBREAKING NEWS: AT least 11 people have been injured after an explosion in a building in New York today.

The New York City Fire Department responded to reports of a large building explosion and collapse in East Harlem, CNN reports.

It is unclear if there are any people are trapped in the rubble. The FDNY said the building is located around Park Avenue between 114th and 117th streets, which is north of Central Park.

Residents reported hearing a large explosion in an apartment building around 9 a.m.

“The whole building shook,” a worker at a nearby travel store told The New York Post. “I think people must be injured. I see a lot of smoke.”

Smoke from the fire could be seen in midtown. The residential building was above a piano store. Video footage shows fire crews fighting the fire.

“I heard a big explosion, Boom!…I made sure my coworker was OK,” one witness told Fox News.

The fire appears to be limited to the one building, but debris could be seen from blocks away. Some of those injured may have been hit by falling debris, reports said.

The incident comes just days before St Patrick’s Weekend when hundreds of people from Donegal are due in the city.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear at this stage.

HSE DENIES CLAIMS IT REFUSED STAFF MASS ON ASH WEDNESDAY

The HSE has denied claims that management at Letterkenny General Hospital refused a request from staff to celebrate mass on Ash Wednesday.

Letterkenny Hospital

Letterkenny Hospital

However it has emerged that the times allocated for the Mass in the conference room at the hospital were not found to be suitable.

Instead of receiving ashes at mass, the Chaplaincy team distributed them throughout the hospital.

Setanta Communications Ltd Dublin, speaking on behalf of the HSE  said: “Management at Letterkenny General Hospital wish to confirm they did not reject any request for the celebration of mass on Ash Wednesday made either by the Chaplaincy Team or by any individual member or members of staff.”

The PR Company was responding to the Tirconail Tribune who received complaints from members at the hospital who claimed their request for the Celebration of Mass on Ash Wednesday was rejected by hospital management.

The newspaper tried to confirm what exactly is the HSE policy on the celebration of Mass within the hospital since the complaints also related to alleged religious discrimination against Catholics being a new practice within the Letterkenny General Hospital.

The reply on behalf of the HSE said: “This year there was no chapel available as it presently out of commission due to the flood. The Chaplaincy Team contacted Hospital Management to enquire about availability of the Conference Room to celebrate mass as had occurred at Christmas. This room is used for clinical multi-disciplinary team case conferences with other hospitals (e.g. video link with Galway).

“The Conference Room was offered to the Chaplaincy Team but times were unsuitable. Ashes were distributed to staff and patients throughout the hospital by the Chaplaincy Team.

“Ash Wednesday Mass will continue to be celebrated each year at the hospital as has been the tradition, when the chapel is operational again following the flood.

“Two new chapels have been designed in a partnership between Hospital Management, the Chaplaincy Team and the Hospital Design Team. Building works are scheduled to commence shortly. One chapel has been designed for Catholic worship and the other for other Christian denominations.

“This reflects Letterkenny General Hospital’s ongoing commitment to respecting the religious traditions of staff, patients and their families.”

The one and only Mullaghduff Band.

The one and only Mullaghduff Band.

The proud and historic tradition of the fife and drum in the Rosses makes its way to New York City this week with the visit by the Old Mullaghduff Band to the St Patrick’s Day Parade.

Mullaghduff Band, founded in 1881 were officially invited to attend the World famous parade last year and the 12 months preparation will culminate with their appearance and march down 5th avenue next Monday at noon.

A group of more than 60 will depart the lovely West Donegal townland on Saturday morning and later that night they will be special guests at the Donegal Association Dinner Dance in Queens NYC.mullaghdubh logo

The Donegal Association of New York itself even goes further back than that of the Mullaghduff Band having marched in the St Patrick’s day parade in 1860…21 years before the formation of the band in Mullaghduff.

That shared history forms a great part of the weekend in New York and the band have attracted the attention of TG4 who are recording the run-up to the trip as well as the band’s participation on the day. A National US TV channel are likewise linking up on the day to capture Mullaghduff band’s attendance in New York.

Pauline Bonner Sweeney who is the Trip President and a member of the hard working committee captured the mood of the touring group.

“We are honoured to be representing Mullaghduff and Donegal at the St Patrick’s day parade as well as at the Donegal Association Dinner Dance.

“We are very aware of the History shared by our band, the Parade and the Association in New York and everyone is really looking forward to the trip. We have many friends and family from all over Donegal either living in the States or travelling out and who have been in touch. It will be a special time for us all”.

Well-known East Donegal businessman and farmer, Bert Galbraith, who is standing for election in the Stranorlar Electoral area, says he wants to see the area transformed after years of neglect.

The beef and sheep farmer who also runs his own successful construction business, told the huge crowd who attended his campaign launch on Friday night that he had given it careful consideration before he decided to allow his name to go forward as a Fine Gael candidate.

The large attendance who turned up for the St. Johnston man’s launch in Maggie’s Tavern, heard him say that he believes many people are desperate for a change in the representation they have at council level.

For Bert Galbraith’s wife Ita O’Sullivan a number one vote for Bert would be the icing on the cake!

For Bert Galbraith’s wife Ita O’Sullivan a number one vote for Bert would be the icing on the cake!

“Over the last number of years I have heard people say time and again that we need an alternative to the representatives in the council chamber – and now is their chance to make that change. I am asking people to vote for me, so that working together, we can work to transform this region.”

The local election candidate suggested that the Stranorlar electoral area is one of huge potential, but he maintained, it has been badly overlooked in terms of bringing that to fruition.

“The part of Donegal where I live was decimated by unemployment when the textiles industry closed down. Places like Raphoe and Convoy, Lifford and St. Johnston have never really recovered from that. Farmers have been hit time and again by regulations and red-tape and then to make matters worse there has been a collapse in the prices for bull beef and potatoes since Christmas leaving farmers suffering severe losses.

“The people of this area know that if they want anybody at national level to listen, they need strong voices at local level to speak up for them.”

It is for those reasons that the local farmer and businessman decided he would let his name go forward at the local elections and – with both Minister Dinny McGinley and Deputy Joe McHugh in attendance at his launch as well as candidates Martin Harley and Jimmy Kavanagh – Mr. Galbraith said he believes he can be the strong local voice the people of the area have been craving.

“I am a hard-worker and not only am I aware of the issues facing the people of the area, I am also a man who knows how to get things done – how to deliver results – and I honestly believe that is what the people of this area have been looking for.”

The father of two says he wants his children to grow up in a region that reaches its enormous potential, and he said he said that’s a vision shared by many people in the area.

“I want my children, and everyone else’s children, to have even better opportunities for learning. I want all our people of working age to be able to find work in good jobs or build and grow their own businesses. I want to see our beautiful natural environment and heritage protected. I want everyone to feel safe and secure from crime. I want to see better health services for everyone.

“I want to our farmers to see just returns for their hard work and produce and to see their quality local produce, like for instance, quality Donegal beef marketed to a wider audience under a single brand. This is my vision and I know many people share it.”

“My focus is on the development of jobs, agriculture, infrastructure and community and it is because I know I would work tirelessly for the people of the Stranorlar Electoral Area that I have put myself forward as a Fine Gael candidate,” he concluded.

Adapted games such as New Age Curling encourage participation, fun, fair-play, social interaction & enjoyment.

For the first time in this county’s history, five Curling clubs through Killygordan Wednesday Club, Raphoe Monday Club, Stranorlar Friday Club, Lifford Friday Club & Letterkenny Active Retirement will compete in this new initiative.

League winners will be crowned after the last round of games, scheduled to take place on Monday 26th May. The teams are mixed with both men & women playing.

To avoid any disputes, each club nominated two members to join a group of trained adjudicators that will act as neutral umpires at each game.

Curling is a sport which is played worldwide on an ice rink. Many people will be familiar with it from watching the Winter Olympics recently on TV.

New Age curling is a version of the official sport adapted by Go for Life, the national sports programme for older adults. Importantly, the game can be played by both able-bodied and disabled people of all ages alike.

How to play

Curling can be played on a flat wooden surface, approximately the size of a Badminton court (44feet). To play the game, you will need 8 Kurling stones (4 for each team), and a target mat. The objective of the game is to get your stones closer to the centre of the target than your opponent. The team with the stone nearest the centre target after all 8 stones have been rolled, wins 1 point for that game, with 5 games played in total.

The league will run every Monday evening, with the exception of a few games being played on Monday or Wednesday afternoon.

If you are interested in setting up a curling club, or are already part of an established club but would like to take part in a structured league, contact the Donegal Sports Partnership Offices on 074-9116078 .
