John Chambers is conducting the draw for the Mixed Foursomes on Friday Evening at 7.30pm in the clubhouse.

Everyone has been waiting to see who they are paired against since the notice went up on the notice board.

It was great to see so many interested in playing in this competition. Make sure to come along and witness the draw on Friday night.

Remember there are free bites and everyone is welcome. Bring your friends or family along.

It is six nations weekend again and all the matches will be live in the clubhouse on Saturday. Let’s hope Ireland can do the business in Paris. We will be all down on Saturday to cheer them on.

There will also be a chef in place from this weekend. So if you are dining out this weekend, why not try the golf club for something to eat.

Also we have live music with Johnny Mc Fall on Saturday night from 9pm. It promises to be a great day and night.

So enjoy the atmosphere on Saturday and bring your friends along to enjoy the match and food.

There are presentations on this Sunday Evening 6pm at the clubhouse.

Our Captain Gerald will be presenting the winners of the Challenge Cup, Spring Cup and the AIB bowl.

It would be great if there was a good attendance for the prize giving.

Competitions this week:

Wednesday 12th March: Open Single’s Stableford (Soup & Sandwiches)

Saturday 15th March: Gents 4BBB/ Ladies Donegal Shield Qualifier

Sunday 16th March: Gents Monthly Medal Stableford Competition

Monday 17th of March: Open 3bbb Stableford (any Combination)

Don’t forget there is prizes for nines and a prize for over 19 handicap in all singles competitions at the club.

We are into a new month in the Four Person Team event. Make sure to give it a go as everyone will want to qualify for the final and we are running out of months.

It is an ideal time to play in this competition as the course has dried out well and is in great condition.

Remember you can play any day of the week in this competition.

From the 1st of February all balls landing on the fairway will have to be lift, clean and drop in the semi-rough until further notice.

This is to ensure the fairways are in excellent conditions for the summer months.

I can also confirm that there is a free lift and drop if your ball lands in the rough and is plugged. This rule is in place for the month of March.

The Gaeltacht team were away to Portnoo on the 8th of March and got 1 ½ points. It was extremely windy on the day making it very tough.

We need two good results in our final two matches. The club would like to thank Portnoo Golf Club for their hospitality on the day.

The next match is at home to Gweedore on the 22nd of March and Gerald or Andy will be in touch with all the players during the week.

Let’s hope we can get a result from these match as the league is finely balanced at the moment.

Juvenile notes;

It was extremely tight in the Cadet section last Saturday with Michael Dolan just edging out Max Roarty on the second tie hole, shot of the day went to Andy Ward for his tee shot to the 18th.

In the main section Edward O Reilly saw off a stiff challenge from Conor Cheevers.

COPE CONFIRMS AGREEMENT ON MACKEREL

Pat the Cope Gallagher MEP has confirmed that an agreement was reached yesterday evening in London concerning the sharing of mackerel in the North East Atlantic.

Pat the Cope Gallagher.

Pat the Cope Gallagher.

Mackerel is Ireland’s most valuable fishery worth over €125 million to the sector and is extremely important to Killybegs, Ireland’s largest fishing port.

Pat the Cope stated from the European Parliament in Strasbourg this morning that an agreement was signed between the European Union, Norway and the Faroe Islands concerning the sharing of mackerel in the North East Atlantic.

“The agreement will be in place for five years. However, Iceland is not a party to the agreement having withdrawn from the talks.”

“From an Irish perspective, the agreement is good news in the short term. Ireland’s mackerel quota will increase from 57,000 tonnes in 2013 to 105,000 tonnes for 2014. This represents a 60% increase on the provisional quota issued at the start of the year.”

“In the long term, it is worrying that the Faroe Islands have received a share of 12.6% as a result of the agreement. This share is totally unjustified and must not result in long term losses for the Irish sector. EU Commissioner Damanaki must take full responsibility as her handling of the entire situation has been disappointing to say the least.”

“Iceland has once again refused to co-operate fully with the other Coastal States. As such, I firmly believe that trade sanctions now must come back onto the table. I was responsible for steering through the European Parliament in late 2012, a new trade instrument designed to tackle this type of situation and it is now an imperative that the European Commission act swiftly and impose sanctions on Iceland.”

Donegal will be hoping to bounce back with a victory to keep them on course for promotion after stuttering at the weekend against Meath.

It’s the first time they have won the Markey Cup since 1985.

This stunning provincial victory comes on the back of PCC Falcarragh capturing the U16 Ulster Bank Arthur’s cup title last week.

WOMAN RESCUED AFTER BREAKING HER ANKLE AT ARDS FOREST PARK

A woman had to be airlifted to hospital yesterday after breaking her ankle while out walking at Ards Forest Park.Rescue helicopter

Donegal Mountain Rescue coordinated the rescue with excellent support and cooperation from the Mulroy Bay Coastguard Unit, a HSE ambulance crew and the Coastguard helicopter crew 118 based at Strandhill in Sligo.

Two handlers from our SARDA dog unit also attended the scene.

Speaking to Donegal Daily, a spokesman for the Donegal Mountain Recue said they picked up the distress call at 12:40pm and dispatched a hasty crew to the area.

“However the Coastguard Unit, who happened to have a boat unit on exercise in the area, dropped off a crew member on Binnagorm beach and he was first to locate and stabilise the casualty on a headland beyond the locally famous Iron Man.

“He remained with her until the DMRT and ambulance crews arrived. The casualty was a 62 year old female from Co Kerry who was holidaying in the area with her husband. She unfortunately slipped on a treacherous section of track and suffered a broken ankle.”

The woman was in a state of some shock and considerable pain when the rescue crews from the various agencies arrived but stable.

Because of the distance she was from the nearest access point, some 2km, a decision was made to call the rescue helicopter.

According to DMRT spokesman Joseph Brennan she was “rescued in a classic exercise of a highline extraction to the helicopter in perfect weather conditions at 14:45.”

She was transported to Letterkenny General Hospital where she was was kept overnight and is undergoing surgery today .

BEING ATTACKED IS THE NUMBER ONE FEAR FOR OLD PEOPLE IN DONEGAL, SURVEY SHOWS

Living in fear of being attacked as well as financial and health worries top the list of concerns for older people across Donegal, a local survey has shown.

A personal alarm is recommended for elderly people across Donegal.

A personal alarm is recommended for elderly people across Donegal.

The research was carried out by the local Good Morning Service which provides a daily phone call service to hundreds of elderly people across the county.

Recent attacks on the elderly are a major concern of those interviewed by the group which has centres in Buncrana, Donegal Town, Falcarragh, Letterkenny, Lifford, and Burtonport.

The Good Morning Service co-ordinator, Frances Browne, said they are trying to reassure the elderly people of Donegal that help is at hand.

“Our team of volunteers provide a supportive, friendly voice that reassures our clients that, thankfully, these robberies and break ins are not widespread. We let them know there are measures they can take to make their homes as safe as possible.

“We will be sending our Spring Newsletter to our clients in the next few weeks, and it will provide helpful information (from An Gardai) about carrying out a security check on your home.

“In Donegal, there are many excellent community groups who provide personal alarms to people over the age of 65. We work with them daily, on behalf of our clients, to ensure they each have a personal alarm,” she said.

The service supports over 400 older people in the county, with over 120 volunteers making more than 900 calls to them per week.

The calls are made at an agreed time and can be daily or once a week, depending on the preferences of the client. The service also advocates for older people and refers clients to health services and any other organisation that may be of help in relation to each individual’s concerns.

In Inishowen, the service also provides the Friendly Face Befriending scheme that matches a volunteer with an individual who feels isolated or vulnerable, alongside the Care & Repair service offering older people help with home maintenance; light repair work; shopping; transport and social services.

The three issues of most concern to those surveyed include:

• Personal safety worries, particularly fears in relation to burglaries, break ins and attacks on older people around the county. Some older people say they can’t sleep at night with worry about the attacks. The Good Morning Service works to ensure older people have a panic alarm and helps resolve any telephone problems.

• Personal health difficulties, in which the Good Morning Service regularly supports older people in contacting or travelling to appropriate health professionals, as well as regularly talking with older people who are lonely or isolated.

• Financial concerns, such as the difficulty of making ends meet on a pension; the high cost of prescriptions; and the challenge of staying warm when fuel is now so expensive.

The calls are made at an agreed time and can be daily or once a week, depending on the preferences of the client. The service also advocates for older people and refers clients to health services and any other organisation that may be of help in relation to each individual’s concerns.

If you are over the age of 60, and facing any of these issues, remember you are not alone. You can contact the Good Morning Service for support:

• The Good Morning Service’s phone call with a volunteer offers a chat, advice, referral to supports, or a chance to talk about any concerns you might have.

• The Service is free and available to anyone over the age of 60 living in County Donegal.

• To register for the service, contact the Buncrana office on 074-9321598‪‪074-9321598‬‬.

Would you like to support older people in Donegal?

• Contact 074-9321598‪‪074-9321598‬‬ if you are interested in volunteering.

• You can also help by making time to talk, and listen to, any older person who might be feeling lonely, isolated, or needing support. Just a smile and the offer of a chat can make a big difference in the life of someone who is living alone.

SWILLY Rovers have been severely punished after a small number of their followers allegedly directed racist abuse at a teenage boy.Swilly Rovers

The Ramelton club is to appeal the results of a hearing into the incident.

The disciplinary action comes following alleged monkey chants and other slurs aimed at a 14 year old Cameroon-born player Thierry Baba during a cup game played on March 1st.

The Ramelton club have been fined €1,000 and banned from hosting SFAI cup games after an investigation found some fans did take part in racist chants.

An SFAI committee reviewed referee Joe McHugh’s report on the game at a disciplinary hearing in Dublin’s Red Cow Inn.

Both Swilly Rovers FC and Castlebar Celtic FC were represented at the hearing.

Following that review the SFAI committee has made the following decision:

The Committee concluded that racist chanting by Swilly Rovers supporters did take place.

With immediate effect Swilly Rovers FC is prohibited from playing any further games in the SFAI Cups at their home ground for the remainder of this season.

All further SFAI Cup games where Swilly Rovers would have had home advantage this season will be played at a neutral venue of the SFAI’s choosing.

Swilly Rovers FC is fined the sum of €1,000 payable to the SFAI as per its rules on fines payment.

Swilly Rovers FC is severely warned as to its future conduct.

The Committee recommends that the FAI’s inter-cultural department sets up the appropriate educational course with Swilly Rovers FC as soon as possible.”

Swilly Rovers, who have consistently denied the incident, say they will appeal the decision.

Ciaran Coll is also a major doubt, he sat out training on Tuesday and Thursday night and now is in a race against time to get fit for Sunday’s crucial clash.

Sean McCarron is also struggling but with the game not until Sunday afternoon it is hoped he will have enough time to recover.

Damien McNulty missed the League cup clash with Cockhill Celtic but he is expected to make a return this weekend.

Inishowen Sinn Féin Councillor, Jack Murray, has said that he has been inundated with calls from elderly residents asking for street lights to be installed outside their homes in order to provide some protection from burglars.

Cllr Murray has said cut to public lighting a 'cruel' cut in council budget.

Cllr Murray has said removal of public lighting fund a ‘cruel’ cut in council budget.

He said many are shocked to hear that all money to provide street lighting was abolished in recent budgets.

Cllr Murray said;  “The removal of the street lighting fund that was adopted in recent council budgets was an unreported cut that will have serious consequences for vulnerable citizens in rural areas.

“At the last Inishowen electoral area meeting, I enquired if there was any other way to access funding to provide lighting for elderly residents who are concerned about the recent crime wave.

“It was confirmed that this could only be done through the council’s public lighting fund and this had been abolished.

“This is yet further evidence of the impact that the council budget, which was rammed through by Fine Gael, Labour and the independents, will have on the people of this county.

“I am now calling on government party representatives, and their supporters in the independent grouping, to ask their ministers to release funding for public street lighting.

“They are responsible for passing this unfair budget.

“They must now work to undo some of the damage the have done.

It was a stunning start to the month for Donegal Sports Star Award winner Letterkenny athlete Mark English who, running with UCD, set a new indoor 800m record at the AAI Open Games in Athlone in a time of 1.46.82. Just four days later English produced another world class performance to win the 800m B race in the Stockholm International Grand Prix with a superb time of 1.47:69. And Mark rounded off a marvelous week by being named the Irish Independent Sports Star of the Week.

And Boyce also won a bronze medal at the National Indoor Athletics Championships in Athlone in the middle of the month. At the same championships Letterkenny AC’s Danny Mooney won a silver medal.

And it was a 1-16 to 0-12 victory over Galway in Salthill with McFadden grabbing the game’s only goal.

Tierney Park Ray Durack’s men had got their league campaign off to a winning start seeing of Fermanagh on a score of 2-19 to 1-13.

There was a stunning 26 medal haul for the Samurai Uladh Club at the All-Ireland Judo Championships in Kilkenny. 16-year-old Muff girl Samantha Weir won three golds’ in the U-18, U-20 and Senior Women’s 76kg categories. There was also gold for Sarah Jane Porter who was celebrating her 12th birthday as she claimed the 33kg title. Michael McCay took gold in the 64kg U-18 category.

On the seond Sunday in February the reigning 2013 Donegal Sports Star Motorsport Award winners Declan Boyle and Brian Boyle finished first in the Galway International rally in the opening round of the Irish Tarmac Championship to record their first ever international rally success. It was a great day for Donegal as Garry Jennings and Rory Kennedy, also in a Subaru, finished second while the Ford Focus of Frosses man Donagh Kelly claimed third place. Another crew from the county Declan Gallagher and Ryan Moore were the Galway National Rally winners. And there was a third title for Donegal competitors when Paul Creamer and Danny McCloskey took victory in the Galway Junior Rally.

In the middle of the month Dungloe pool player Shaun Sharkey was in top form for the Irish team at the European Pool Championships in Malta helping his country to record impressive wins over Belgium, Northern Ireland and Morocco on the first day of the competition. Sharkey also featured as the Irish team defeated France.

Despite scoring a try for her country Larissa Muldoon ended up on a losing Irish team in a Six Nations clash with England at Twickenham.
