UNDER 14 HURLING

The lads were away to St Eunans in their first league game of the year.

They found it very difficult to settle into this game and St Eunans took full advantage, leading by 10 points at half time.

It was a different team that took to the field in the second half, dominating the rest of the game.

Mac Cumhaills will rue two missed goal chances towards the end of the game and were beaten by 2 points.

Management were delighted with the second half performance and look forward to the boys producing more of the same.

CAMOGIE

The girls traveled to Burt on Friday, hoping to keep their unbeaten run going. The first half was an extremely tough affair, with neither side giving way.

Mac Cumhaills held a slender two point advantage at the break.

The second half started well for our girls, when Caoimhe Moss found the net, but this was cancelled out shortly afterwards when Burt scored a goal.

Mac Cumhaills found it hard going and Burt eventually drew level.

A point late on for Mac Cumhaills was the difference between these teams as the final score was Sean Mac Cumhaills 1-04 Burt 1-03.

Scorers for Mac Cumhaills were Laura Brown 0-02, Chloe Kennedy 0-01, Caoimhe Moss 1-00 and Amy Campbell 0-01.

GOLF NEWS: MCCORMACK COMES OUT ON TOP AT ROSAPENNA

Rosapenna’s Eddie McCormack claimed the 10th edition of the McGinley Motors sponsored Rosapenna Senior Scratch Cup after the third round was abandoned due to high winds at the spectacular Donegal Golf Resort along Sheephaven Bay.  GOLF LOGO

Ten years after this weeks Master’s favourite Rory McIlroy beat the reigning British Amateur champion Brian McElhinney over 36 holes on the Sandy Hills links, the annual Rosapenna Senior Scratch Cup was to be contested over 54 holes with 36 holes on Saturday and a further 18 holes on Sunday morning.

After the first day’s play — Sandy Hills Links in the morning followed by the Old Tom Morris Links in the afternoon — McCormack lead by three strokes on two under par (71-70) from Rory Leonard of Banbridge (73-71) on one over par.

County Sligo’s Steffan O’Hara was a shot further back on two over (72-73) followed by Balbriggan’s Robbie Cannon (76-70) and Connor O’Rourke of Rathsallagh (73-73) on three over par while Portmarnock’s up and coming star Conor Purcell was four over.

Sadly, the weather did not co-operate on Sunday morning as the field tackled the Sandy Hills Links and with high winds causing golf balls to oscillate, the round had to be abandoned and the event was awarded on the 36 hole scores with gross prizes for the top six players with McCormack triumphing for the first time in an event he has supported staunchly over the years.

The best first round prize went to Dan Carlin (Balmoral) with a one over par 73 and the second round prize went to Matthew McClean (Balmoral) with a two under par 69. The nett winner was Marc Nolan (Delgany) with 144 nett bot and the nett runner up was Jamie Foley (Letterkenny) with 144 nett.

In the McGinley Motors sponsored Junior Scratch Cup also over 36 holes on Saturday the 5th it was Rosapenna member Martin McDermott who claimed the trophy by just one stroke on 152 (+9) with rounds of 74 (+3) over the Old Tom Morris Links and 78 (+6) over the Sandy Hills Links.

The runner up was Pascal Cullen (Portsalon) with a 153 (+10) total returning rounds of 76 & 77.

Third place was Niall Carroll (Athlone) on 158 with Letterkenny’s young Jack Patton fourth on 159. The best first round was Liam Walsh (Castlerea) with 75 (+4) and the best second round was Joe Coyle (Portsalon) with 78 (+6).

The nett section was won by Louis Boyce of Rosapenna with 148 nett bot and the nett runner up was Pat Boyce also from Rosapenna with 148 nett.

Many thanks to the main sponsor Noel McGinley of McGinley Motors, Letterkenny and to the Rosapenna Captain Mr Bernard O’Neill for their support & assistance over the weekend.

With over 100 participants in both competitions it was the largest field to date with golfers from as far away as Cork G.C travelling to compete.

GOLF NEWS: KEVIN KIELY WINS HIS ‘MEAL’ AT BARNHILL

Congratulations to all competitors who turned out in their “blue” colours in support of the local Letterkenny Branch in highlighting Autism Awareness day.  GOLF LOGO

Following a run of five consecutive pars from 4th -8th hole [inclusive] and returning an outward nine score of 20pts, Vivian Doherty [11] must have thought that he had blown his chances of his first win of the season when he registered two back-to-back double bogeys at 9th and 10th.

Despite that set-back, and with the rain getting heavier by the minute, Vivian showed that he was nobody’s fool and recorded another fine run of pars from 14th-18th for an overall winning score of 40pts.

Relegated to second place on BOT was the “back to form” Dessie Ferry [9]. Harbouring a niggling shoulder injury and recording an uncharacteristic double bogey at 4th, Dessie then “scorched” the index one 6th hole with a birdie followed by another birdie at par five 11th., only to lose out on top spot with a double bogey at 18th.

Friday Meal Deal

Friday 4th hosted the first Friday Open “Meal Deal” Stroke competition of the year and proved most successful with up to forty competitors taking part, and a large number availing of the €10 meal deal [optional].

Taking top spot on the podium and proving his determination to reduce his handicap this season to six, the club’s foremost Ulster Cup and Jimmy Bruin panelist Kevin Kiely [9], followed his birdie at par three 5th, which left him level par after six holes, with a disappointing double bogey at 9th, but cementing his win with further birdies at 14th and 18th to return a gross 76 [nett 67] four shots over par, and confirm a unique “double” of having won the first competition of the season also.

Proving that “stroke-play” golf is not a hindrance to competitors at Barnhill, there was a three-way BOT for second place between Kenny Harkin [13], Greg Sullivan [17] and Conor Mc Gettigan [13], with the latter coming out on top with a score of 82 gross, [nett 69].

Sat. 5th Open once again saw a cat. 4. handicapper leading the field and Colin Morrow [22], despite three double bogeys on the card, produced 22pts each nine to secure his first win of the season with 44pts.

In runner-up spot, and who must be considered one of the most improved golfers in Donegal over the past two years, was Clive Davison [12] who, having started with a bogey at first but followed with a run of ten pars over the next ten holes culminating in an incredible 27pts and an outward nine of 23pts [one over gross 37], will rue that double bogey at 15th , the only blemish on a great day for the cat.2 member.

Another member who has not been out of the top six placings this season so far is Mark Cohen, now playing off 18, a reduction of four shots.

Sunday 6th confined competition, played in dry but blustery weather, was won by the club’s house convenor Enda Mannion [12] who has been knocking on the winners’ door now for some time.

With the help of three early birdies at 2nd, 4th and 5th, followed by a disappointing double bogey at 6th, Enda recorded 22pts on front nine.

Despite a heart-stopping “blank” at the par five 11th, Enda’s tenacity and greenside “touch” brought him 20pts on inward nine and an overall winning score of 42pts.

In the Sunday afternoon Junior 9-hole competition, Cian Harkin came out on top on a BOT over Ronan Daly, both players returning 17pts each.

It was Cian’s magnificent birdie on 4th that made the difference.

Well done to all the Junior participants and same again next Sunday at 4.15pm.

Important Note:

One of the highlights of the early season, the club’s Voucher competition, has been re-scheduled to Sunday 11th May.

With “hollow-tinning” of the greens due to begin this week and next, the committee has respected the club’s members and considered it duly unsporting to proceed with such an esteem competition at this time.

OPEN FRIDAY’S

The club’s OPEN FRIDAY’s continue next week and following on from last week’s entry, players are advised to book a time early.

RETIRED FARMER FOUND NOT GUILTY OF SEXUALLY ABUSING HIS NEPHEW

A retired farmer has been found not guilty of sexually abusing his nephew in a holiday home in Downings.

Retired farmer Sam Cunningham was found not guilty of sexually assaulting his nephew.

Retired farmer Sam Cunningham was found not guilty of sexually assaulting his nephew.

Samuel Cunningham, 66, was accused of four counts of sexual assault against his then 14 year old nephew at a holiday home in Rosguill in 1993.

The alleged victim, Patrick Cunningham, now a 35 father-of-four, claimed he was assaulted when he went to do repairs with his uncle on the holiday home at Rosguill, Downings.

Patrick Cunningham says he was fondled and that his uncle performed oral sex on him at the farmhouse.

However Samuel Cunningham stressed “There is no way on this earth I would have done that to any young person. If I thought I had done that I would have taken myself out the back and shot myself.”

Today after 50 minutes of deliberation, a jury of eight men and four women found the accused not guilty on all four charges of alleged sexual assault.

When the verdict was read out, Patrick Cunningham’s family sobbed in the court.

The alleged victim, who waived his right to anonymity, had claimed the alleged sexual assaults were sparked when water was splashed on his trousers when they were fetching water from a well.

“He told me to take off my clothes because I would get a flu. He then made a makeshift bed on a sofa.

“He said there were only a few blankets in the house and told me to get in beside him,” he said.

Mr Cunningham then alleged the four assaults took place.

Sobbing in the witness box at Letterkenny Circuit Court, he said he counted flowers on some curtains to block out the pain.

Patrick Cunningham said he kept the alleged assaults to himself until a number of years later when he told his cousin Seamus.

He said he became introverted after the alleged assaults.

He also partially blamed the assaults for falling in with the wrong crowd and eventually being convicted of two armed robberies in Northern Ireland.

However he said he used his time in jail constrictively to study and became the first prisoner to get day leave to study for a diploma in Environmental Science at university.

However the accused, Sam Cunningham, denied that any such assaults ever took place between December 1st, 1993 and January 31st, 1994.

In fact, the retired farmer from Glenside Road, Dunmurray in Belfast, said he always spent the New Year period at his late wife Rose’s family home in Cavan.

He alleged that his own son Francis along with the alleged victim Patrick and his cousin Seamus had now formed a “team.

“This is the worst thing I have ever witnessed. The devastation to the family who have been turned upside down has ben unbelievable.

“The only thing I can think of is that the want to keep me away form my farm,” he said.

A niece of Mr Sam Cunningham, Mrs Doreen Robinson, said she does not believe the holiday home was even in the possession of the family claiming it had been sold in 1992

She also said she not believe the allegations against her uncle.

“I don’t believe it. A paedophile does it over and over again and doesn’t stop after just once,” she said.

GAA NEWS: AODH RUADH SUFFER HEAVY DEFEAT AWAY TO NAOMH COLUMBA

Aodh Ruadh GAA Notes

Football

The trip to Glencolumbkille brought mixed results for Aodh Ruadh last Saturday. Aodh Ruadh

The seniors were comprehensively beaten by a very highly motivated Naomh Columba outfit, 2-15 to 0-5 the final score. Cathal Maguire was on the scene and we have his pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org. The reserves fared rather better, romping to their second win of the season with a glut of goals at Páirc na nGael. It ended Naomh Columba 0-9 Aodh Ruadh 7-5. Again, we have Cathal Maguire’s pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Aodh Ruadh face Carndonagh in Father Tierney Park this Saturday. The reserve game throws in at 5.30pm and is followed by the seniors at 7pm.

Aodh Ruadh minors took a sizeable support down the road with them to Ardara on Sunday afternoon, and while they showed a number of flashes of brilliance, they came out on the wrong end of a 1-10 to 1-5 scoreline. Ballyshannon started well, hitting three points before Ardara made their first impact on the score board, with one effort from Shane McGrath an especially fine score. Ardara then fought their way back into the tie and, despite a cracking goal from the boot of Oisín Roper, they went in with the lead at the interval. The first half pattern was replicated in the second, with the Ernesiders getting off to a good start only for Ardara to get back on top with a five point cushion at the final whistle. Aodh Ruadh could take a number of positives from the game. The team held their shape well and played some excellent football, with some great kicking, movement and tackling. Defensively, Colm Kelly and Eddie Lynch engineered a number of turnovers, while Daniel Warnock was very sound in the backline. Kevin Warnock was in good form between the sticks too. Elsewhere, it was another energy-packed performance from Ryan McKenna while Oisín Rooney was introduced in the second half and dealt well with the rough and tumble that came his way. Next up for the minors is a trip to Donegal town to play Four Masters this Wednesday, 9th April. Throw in 6.30pm.

The under 14s have a undeserving, disappointing performance in the game against Saint Naul’s on Friday evening in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. They looked tired from the start, probably as a direct result of four games in eight days. The side never came near to playing to their capabilities. Saint Naul’s dominated from the start, leaving the Aodh Ruadh lads playing catch up for the duration of the match. Best for Aodh Ruadh on the night was captain Dylan Gallagher leading by example and Senan Rooney with his never-say-die attitude. If there was anything good to take out of this game it was the performance of substitutes Ciaran Hodgins, Donagh McGowan, Niall Monaghan, Mark Gettins and Joe Danagher all having great games when introduced. The final scoreline was Aodh Ruadh 0-8 Saint Naul’s 4-10. The next outing for the lads is away to Ardara on Wednesday night with the throw in at 6.30pm.

Under 12 training continues as usual this Saturday from 11am to 12 noon in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh and Wednesdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

The under 10s have a challenge game this Saturday at 11am in the Park against Erne Gaels. All players to be up to the park for 10.30am. Midweek training takes place on Tuesday night this week from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

Under 8 and under 6 training continues in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh this Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

Hurling

Well done to Donegal on claiming the NHL Division 3A final title, especially our five representatives on the panel, Paul Sheridan, Stephen Sheerin, Ciaran Kilgannon, Chris Kilgannon and Paul Hughes. The Ulster League clash with Sean Treacey’s was rescheduled for this Saturday at 1pm in Garvaghey. The team will be leaving park at 10.45am. The seniors weren’t inactive last weekend either, travelling to Mayo outfit Tooreen for a worthwhile and testing challenge. The homesters, reigning Mayo senior champions, won 1-18 to 1-7, but there were a lot of pleasing displays from the Ernesiders.

On Thursday last the under 14s played Four Masters in a challenge game in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. In a much improved performance from their previous game against St Eunan’s, they ran out easy winners. They are back in league action this Thursday as they make the trip to the traditional home of Donegal hurling to take on Burt.

The minors opened the defence of their league title with a trip to Killygordon last Thursday. On a very heavy pitch the lads took a while to get into their stride against a determined Setanta team, but the longer the game went on the more the Ballyshannon men took control and ran out convincing winners. This week they are in action against Burt in Father Tierney Park.

On Saturday the Donegal minors completed their division one Ulster Minor League campaign with a trip to Middletown to take on Armagh, an understrength Donegal team battled gamely for most of the match. They were only one point behind at half time, but an eight minute spell midway through the second half where they conceded three goals was to prove very costly. The final score line of 4-10 to 0-12 in favour of the Orchard men was not a true reflection of the game. Donegal performed well in division one this year and the focus is now on their clash with Derry in the Ulster Championship at the end of May. Eddie Lynch and Ciaran Rami started for Donegal, Oisín Roper and Dónal Sweeny came on during the second half, Brendan Gillespie was also on the match day squad, unable to take their place in the starting 15 due to injury were Eugene Drummond and Oisín Rooney.

The eighth annual Hurl-a-Thon took place in the Mercy Hall on Saturday and, just like all the previous ones, it was a great day of fun for all the family, as young and old played their part. The action started bang on 10am with the under 8s taking to the floor and for the next 12 hours the sliotar flew around the Mercy Hall, every ball was vigorously contested and all our teams battled hard throughout the day. There were great crowds in the hall all day adding to the excitement during the games. As is now the norm for this event one of the highlights of the day was the Mothers v Daughters game. For the second year in a row the mothers team comprising of experienced players Jean Sheerin, Tara Keenaghan, Eleanor Rooney, Bernie Kelly, Mary Anderson and debutants Sinead Ayres and Lorraine Ryan had a comfortable victory over the younger ladies team of Orlaith Gillespie, Meabh Rooney, Bronagh Kelly, Roisín Daly, Ciara Gillespie and Alannah Ryan. Later it was the turn of the older males to take to the floor as Pat Faherty led his team of Stephen Sheerin – on the eve of winning an NHL division three league medal with Donegal, Peter Horan, Chris Kelly and debutant Kieran Barron to a controversial victory due in no small part to their pressurising young referee Caelán Drummond throughout the game over Frankie Sheerin’s team of Alan Sweeney. Michael Ayres, Kevin Loughlin and John Rooney.

Well over 100 players took part on the day, and great credit goes to the brilliant mothers of our young hurlers who catered for everyone throughout the day. The ladies manned the kitchen and prepared beautiful food for all to enjoy during the day. Since the inception of this event we’ve had great support from the local community and again this year it was no different, special thanks to Kieran Barron for all the sweeties and goodies, we all gave up Lent for the day, William Doogan for all the drinks, Mary Matthews Shannon’s Corner for her sandwiches and generous donation, Eleanor McCosker of Centra for her beautiful soup and as always Kernan’s Spar for providing generous amounts of tea bags, milk and other goodies that ensured the tea flowed all day.

There are a lot of people to be thanked for making this day such a success, Aodh Ruadh Juvenile Hurling Committee, all the coaches present on the day who reffed the games, kept the teams picked ensuring that the action was non-stop. Thanks to all the mothers who brought food and helped out in the kitchen all day, thanks to Ronan Matthews and Tara Keenaghan for all their photography work, to Thomas Gallagher of the Donegal Democrat for covering this event and Daragh Cox of Ocean FM sport for promoting the Hurl-a-Thon. Tara’s pictures can be seen on aodhruadh.org, while Ronan Matthew’s gallery is up on the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page. Many thanks to Coláiste Cholmcille for use of the Mercy Hall and Michael Donagher for all his help on the day. Finally thanks to all our underage hurlers and their parents who showed up on Saturday, to all the lads who went out with their sponsor cards looking for money in these difficult times, thanks to all the people who sponsored them and for their continued support of our efforts promoting underage hurling in the club. Aside from the fundraising element of the Hurl-a-Thon there is no price that can be put on the enjoyment our young hurlers get annually from the Hurl-a-Thon and as we left the Mercy Hall on Saturday night after over 12 hours of hurling already the youngsters were asking when is the next Hurl-a-Thon on, Roll on 2015 for the ninth edition of this fun event.

Club Hoodies

There will be a distribution session for club hoodies this Wednesday from 7.45pm to 8.45pm in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh. If anyone isn’t able to make the sessions let me know and I will make alternative collection arrangements. This is also an opportunity for people who might have missed out on the first order to get a look at the real thing and see if they would fancy one. We already have a few requests in, so a second order is pencilled in for the end of April.

Park/Development Committee

Team Managers/sub-committees are reminded to put forward possible Tournament or Blitz dates as soon as possible to Peter Conlon to improve co-ordination of these events within the club and to ensure that adequate playing fields and changing rooms are available for each event.

A decision will be made over the next ten days about the re-seeding of the training field at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh which has suffered from heavy traffic during the flood-lit training sessions over recent months.

Any local businesses wishing to advertise on the Electronic Message Board for all of Aodh Ruadh’s home senior football games this season should make contact directly with Park/Development Committee Officers – Michael Daly, Conal Gallagher, David McLoone or Tom Daly.

Thanks to those who helped to prepare the grounds and who came along to work at last Saturday’s All-Ireland D Colleges Final between Our Lady’s, Belmullet and Saint Josephs High School, Crossmaglen. Belmullet proved to be the stronger team on the day but the young Crossmaglen side, who had held out for a draw previously, pushed them all the way. Cathal Maguire was on hand to capture some shots of the action, check them out on aodhruadh.org.

EU MUST INTENSIFY ITS EFFORTS AGAINST RISING CYBER-BULLYING – MEP GALLAGHER

MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher has said the European Union must intensify efforts to help combat cyber-bullying and to encourage safe internet use among children in Europe.

MEP Pat The Cope Gallagher

MEP Pat The Cope Gallagher

The Donegal politician said the results of a recent study into internet use by children is “deeply concerning.”

The European Commission sponsored study called “Net Children Go Mobile” was completed recently following two years of research in five EU countries: Ireland, the UK, Denmark, Italy and Romania.

The study specifically examined the use of the internet on mobile internet devices such as smartphones and tablets by children ranging from ages 9 to 16.

The principle findings of the “Net Children Go Mobile” Report are as follows:

· 31% of 11 to 16 year-olds have had exposure to negative user generated content (such as posts, comments, pictures or videos on social network sites).

· 30% of 11 to 16 year-olds have communicated online with someone they have not met face to face before.

· 29% of 11 to 16 year-olds have viewed sexual images off and online.

· 27% of children aged 9-16 report being bullied on- or offline. The number of children who reported any form of cyber-bullying on the internet or via mobile phones is 14%.

Mr Gallagher said the study highlights that cyber-bullying is a pervasive and growing problem among young people, and the numbers affected have been increasing as more children have access to internet-enabled mobile devices.

“Moreover, the exposure by young children to negative aspects of the internet including communicating with someone the child has not previously met in person has increased due to the more prevalent use of mobile internet devices.

“In order to combat this growing trend the European Union needs to take much greater action, to raise awareness and to decrease risks by funding educational programmes in each EU Member State aimed at preventing cyber-bullying and encouraging the safe use of the internet.”

“Limited funding is currently available under the European Commission supported Daphne III Programme, which aims to protect children from all forms of violence. However, the “Net Children Go Mobile” study adds further credence to the pressing need for a specialised EU wide programme focused on the fight against cyber-bullying.”

Students learn how to fix a puncture on their bikes!!

As part of their Green-School Travel programme Killian National School took part in two very exciting initiatives recently with their bikes!

The aim of Green-Schools Travel is to encourage students, parents and teachers to walk, cycle, scoot, Park ‘n’ Stride, use public transport or car pool instead of using the private car on the school run. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Green-Schools Travel Education Officer Lisa McDaniel ran a cycle maintenance workshop with pupils from 2nd to 6th class where Lisa demonstrated how to stay safe cycling using helmets and high visibility vests and showed the pupils how to adjust their helmets to ensure a correct fit.

As part of this interactive workshop she then demonstrated how to carry out an ‘M-Check’ to ensure that your bike is safe to ride. All pupils then got an opportunity to find and fix a puncture.

The following week on a very sunny 1st of April Mary Kelly from Pedal Right visited the school and pupils from 2nd to 6th class completed their Level 1 off road cycle training.

Pupils learnt how to position themselves correctly on the road as well as practising basic skills like braking, turning and signalling.

A fun day was had by all!

HEALTH Minister James Reilly has given the go-ahead for the appointment of a paediatric diabetes nurse for 140 patients here in Co Donegal.

The victory for campaigners came after a meeting  arranged in Dublin today between Joe McHugh TD and Dr Reilly and representatives of the local campaign group.

Local Fine Gael election candidate Grace Boyle however says the campaign should not end there – and wants a centre of excellence in the North West.

This could be linked to the NHS in Derry.

A Clinical Nurse Specialist for children with type 1 diabetes will be based in Letterkenny General Hospital.

Grace Boyle said that this is service is absolutely essential for the people of Donegal. She said that the next step is to progress the plan to create a Regional Centre of Excellence to enable pump therapy to be available for children in Donegal. At the moment, children in Donegal have to travel to Dublin for this therapy.

* We will have a special report on this story later today.

DONEGAL soccer star Seamus Coleman is among the guests at State banquet being hosted by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth this evening.

The Killybegs man is among hundreds of guests at a dinner in honour of President Michael D Higgins at Windsor Castle.

They include dozens of personalities and sports stars from Ireland who ply their trade in Britain – including Everton star Seamus.

Earlier today the Quen and Prince Philip welcomed the President and his wife, Sabina, to Windsor.

The presidential couple had lunch at Windsor Castle with the royal couple, before heading back into central London.

The President also inspected a guard of honour drawn from Grenadier Guards.

There was plenty of pomp and ceremony on display as the President arrived at Windsor Castle, with more than 800 soldiers, 275 horses and the band of the Irish Guards involved in the welcome for President Higgins and his wife.

A 21-gun salute also sounded as Britain’s Queen and Prince Philip greeted the President with Amhrán na bhFiann ringing out over Windsor Castle.

President Higgins later addressed parliament at Westminster about the growing friendship between the two islands.

NOONAN WASHING HIS HANDS AS BANKS FORCE PEOPLE FROM HOMES – TD

michael noonanSinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said Minister Michael Noonan is ‘washing his hands’ of the banks’ policy of legal actions against homeowners.

Deputy Doherty was speaking after challenging Minister Noonan in the Dáil today.

He said: “I am bitterly disappointed that Minister Noonan has expressed his satisfaction that the banks are meeting the Central Banks’ resolution targets. When I put it to him that the banks are only meeting those targets through wholesale legal actions he did not change his tune.

“Today in the Committee Ulster Bank defended its use of legal proceedings in over 4,000 cases which make up almost half of their proposals under the targets set by Minister Noonan and the Central Bank. They know they can get away with this because of Minister Noonan’s Pontius Pilate attitude. I expect the three other main banks will tell the same tale tomorrow and Thursday.

“The latest data from the banks shows that six years into this crisis the banks have only made a sustainable offer to one third of mortgage holders in distress when legal threats are excluded.

“Minister Noonan has stated on numerous occasions that he does not believe that legal letters constitute a sustainable solution. He has said he has communicated this assertion to the banks yet he is hiding behind the Central Bank who are accepting the banks’ figures including legal letters and removal of people from their home as sustainable solutions.

“It is not good enough the Minister to hide behind the Central Bank in the midst of a mortgage arrears crisis. Ministers should lead and not hide behind the Central Bank or civil servants.”

MAN TOLD HE DOES NOT HAVE TO DEMOLISH HIS HOME AFTER TEN YEAR LEGAL BATTLE

A Donegal man who was ordered to demolish his home because it was built in the wrong location has been told it does not have to be bulldozed.

Joe Lynch has been involved in an ongoing legal battle for the past ten years after a neighbour first objected to the house in St Johnson in 2003.

But the father-of-two, who has spent €72,000 on planning appeals and alterations to his house, was told that he does not have to tear the house down.

Letterkenny Circuit Court was told that the neighbour, who spends most of his time in Dundalk, Co Louth, has now stopped objecting to the house.

He claimed the house was built 30 metres west of where it was supposed to be built.

An Bord Pleanala overturned a decision by Donegal County Council granting retaining planning permission on the 3,600 square ft home at Carrickmore on the shores of Lough Foyle.

Mr Lynch had claimed that he moved the house’s position over fears that rising waters would flood his house if he built it at the original location.

At one stage Mr Lynch was ordered by the courts to take the roof off his house and lower the height of the house by 1.2 metres.

He was also ordered to completely demolish the house but a stay was put on that order.

After a series of appeals, the barrister for Donegal County Council, Declan McHugh, told the court that the matter was now resolved after the neighbour withdrew his objection.

Mr Lynch said he was delighted and relieved by the decision and that his “nightmare” of the past ten years had finally been resolved.

“All I can call it is a nightmare. My life and my family’s lives have been on hold for the past ten years.

“That person did not even live next door to us and yet he managed to put us through a pure hell.

“I am glad that he has seen sense but none of this needed to have happened.

“There were times when we could have simply walked away and moved to another area but we decided to fight this.

“We are just relieved that this is now all over and we just want to get back with living the rest of our lives in peace,” said Mr Lynch.

Mr Lynch appeared in court yesterday to find out if he would be held responsible for the cost of up to 30 court appearances.

His barrister Mr Peter Nolan said his client shuld not be held liable for all the costs of the marathon court case.

He said he had already spent €22,000 on planning and other fees and a further €50,000 on alterations to the house.

“He has paid for it four times over and his family has suffered. This would be an added nail on the crucifix of Mr Lynch. He has suffered enough and he has learned his lesson,” he said.

He added that the message will now go out that Donegal County Council will not tolerate breaches of planning permission.

However barrister for Donegal County Council, Declan McHugh, said the message could also go out that “if you play the system for fifteen years you will ultimately get what you want.”

Judge Keenan Johnson described Mr Lynch as a “foolish man” for moving his house from where it was supposed to be built.

However he said he did not want to grant costs against him which could be an “open cheque.”

He ordered Mr Lynch to pay €10,000 in costs and allowed him 24 months to pay the sum.

Donegal’s children with diabetes present their petition to Health Minister Dr. James Reilly at Dáil Éireann. In front: Rianna and Alyssa Kelly.

Special report by Rachel McLaughlin in Dublin

The Donegal Diabetes Parents Support Group’s campaign has come to a triumphant end. They have been promised a dedicated Paediatric Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist at Letterkenny General Hospital.

This follows a four year campaign for the service, which attends to the needs of children with Type 1 diabetes.

The campaign gathered speed in recent months when it was announced that the position of the previous CNS service at Letterkenny General Hospital would be changed. Parents feared that restructured integrated nurse service would concentrate of Type 2 care, and reduce the time available for their children.

They launched a widespread campaign and started a petition to highlight their demands.

Today at Dáil Éireann, a group of Donegal’s children with diabetes handed a petition of 20,000 signatures to Health Minister Dr. James Reilly’s private secretary outside Leinster House.

Donegal Diabetes Parents Support Group Chairperson Denise Gillespie explains why they were at Dáil Eireann today:

This afternoon, the Donegal Diabetes Parents Support Group and members of the Donegal branch of Diabetes Ireland met with Minister for Health Dr. James Reilly, a delegation from the Department of Health, senior HSE officials, and Deputies Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and Thomas Pringle to discuss their demands.

The group were delighted to hear Dr. James Reilly and CEO of North West Hospital Group Bill Maher announce that the dedicated CNS position was sanctioned and it will be filled within coming weeks.

The meeting also explored the potential of locating a Paediatric Diabetes Centre of Excellence in the North West. There are only 5 such centres nationally and all of those are located south of the Dublin- Limerick line.

Donegal Diabetes Ireland Parents Support Group Chairperson Denise Gillespie said, “We are absolutely delighted with Minister Reilly’s announcement for the appointment of the Paediatric Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialists in the coming weeks and look forward to further discussion with Mr Bill Maher on the development of paediatric diabetes services”.

As he was unable to be present in the Dáil today, DonegalDaily spoke with Fine Gael Deputy Joe McHugh yesterday. We asked him whether he could see funding being made available for a Paediatric Diabetes Centre of Excellence to be set up in Letterkenny, taking cutbacks to the HSE’s budget into account.

He said that the number of children with Type 1 Diabetes in Donegal and the combined expertise of the dedicated CNS and the integrated community nurse would signal towards Donegal being a prime location for such a centre.

Deputy McHugh also said that the measured and calm nature of the parent’s campaign was a critical factor to their success today. He felt that their requests today were “more than reasonable”.

Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty spoke to DonegalDaily about the financial sense that a dedicated Paediatric Diabetes Centre of Excellence would make. Ten per cent of the HSE’s budget is spent on care of diabetes. Deputy Doherty said that an insufficient amount of this money goes towards preventative and management measures for diabetes.

The campaign received strong support from all party-affiliated and independent Donegal TDs. We asked Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and Independent TD Thomas Pringle on the importance of this unified backing.

The Donegal Diabetes Ireland Parents Support Group thanked the people of Donegal, the TDs and the media for their massive support over the past few weeks during their petition campaign.
