DONEGAL PUBLIC URGED TO HAVE THEIR SAY ON WIND ENERGY POLICIES

$

The Glenties Wind Farm Information Group has encouraged the Donegal public to have its say on the future of wind energy in the county.New windfarm

It comes following the launch of a public consultation process on the variation of the County Development Plan with regard to wind farming.

The proposals include the removal from ‘open to consideration’ of six sub basin districts for the Freshwater Pearl Mussel in the County, and a recommendation that, in the interests of residential amenity, a separation distance of ten times the tip height of permitted wind turbines in the County be exercised between turbines and residential dwellings, schools and other places of public gathering.

The group had advocated these proposals since the Straboy wind farm Oral Hearing found the Council in breach of the EU Habitats Directive 2009 with regard to the fresh water mussel and, significantly, pointed to the danger of peat slides on the site for many houses not afforded a reasonable set back distance.

However, GWiG dissociates itself from a third proposal which was tagged onto the Variation following their representations to Council. It proposes to limit the Zone of Visual Influence of Glenveagh National Park to just the area of the Visitor Centre and the Castle grounds and primary visitor walks.

The Group thanked the elected Councillors for their support in providing this opportunity for the public to have their say on these two important aspects of the County Development Plan and its provisions for the development of wind energy in the County.

The group expressed special thanks to Councillor John Campbell who moved these motions in November last on behalf of the group by way of an emergency motion, and councillors Marie Therese Gallagher and Seamus O’Domhnaill who have doggedly pursued this matter on the Group’s behalf.

“We feel it is important that recognition to the conservation values of these special areas of conservation for the Freshwater Pearl Mussel, an internationally protected species is fully reflected in the County Development Plan,” said Mr. Ernan O’Donnell, Chairman of GWiG.

“The image of the County has captured the imagination of visitors searching for the wild, remote, real, Ireland in an open unspoilt landscape that has given birth to, and sustained, our rich cultural heritage. The natural environment, and the quality of our waters that provide a suitable habitat for highly endangered species like the Freshwater Pearl mussel, are essential assets to the image of the County and must be conserved.”

Mr O’Donnell said that finally a balance is being struck regarding where it is appropriate to place turbines, and added that it is a common misperception to suggest that this will lead to the demise of wind farming in the County.

“We can look forward to a more controlled planning regime for turbines. Heretofore ecologically sensitive areas were being targeted and turbine distances from homes did not evolve with the massive increase in turbine size and megawatt output.

“Renewable energy projects, like large scale wind farms, must recognise the traditional rights of rural dwellers, their entitlement to the amenity and enjoyment of their properties, and the importance of providing this setback of ten times the tip height of turbines to protect that amenity, thus minimizing the impacts from noise and visual intrusion. A landowner sees a working landscape, a tourist sees a rich and beautiful landscape, a family the backdrop to their daily lives. In Donegal landscapes have cultural, historical and literary values.”

The consultation process opens today, April 9, and closes one month later.

GWiG is actively encouraging everyone living in the County, or from the county, or visitor to the county, to avail of this opportunity to comment on these variations. Details will be available on the Donegal website and in local County offices.

ELECTION 2014: COUNTY COUNCIL MUST TAKE LEAD ON CREATING JOBS – CUTLIFFE

Community Candidate in Letterkenny/Milford area, Peter Cutliffe has said that Donegal County Council needs to evaluate its role and services it provides to the public.

Peter Cutliffe

Peter Cutliffe

” I believe the Council now needs to be a leader in job-creation within the County & bring-together the mixture of job-creation agencies in a meaningful way” he said.

He said we are witnessing the gradual erosion of the Council role as we know it.

“For instance the transfer of water -services to Irish water & the outsourcing of driving-licence functions. Also, with motor tax & other services available on-line & planners not available to take phone calls, I believe the role of the County Council needs to re-assessed to make it more relevant to the needs of the people.

“I believe that there are opportunities, for example, for the Council to explore the potential to develop & expand the rural post-office network into business/enterprise centres and we need leaders to go out & pursue large job-opportunities, like Pramerica or United Health Care ,for our people. I do not see this happening at the moment,” Mr. Cutliffe concluded.

GUILTY! MAN CAUGHT RED-HANDED AFTER €36K RAID FINALLY ADMITS HE DID IT

BRIAN WARD donegaldailyA CRIMINAL caught red-handed by a quick-thinking traffic Garda with stolen items worth €36,000 has admitted: “I did it.”

Brian ‘Mouse’ Ward of 77 Ardkeen, Cavan, and 11A Ard Glass, Letterkenny had originally denied any wrongdoing, despite being caught in van – with all the items on board.

He was stopped as he drove out of Letterkenny at the Dry Arch Roundabout last September by Garda Traffic Corps officer Paul McGee.

Acting on a tip-off from drugs squad officer Derek Connaughton, Garda McGee pursued a blue Ford van – registration number 04 CN 6132 – as it entered the Letterkenny to Lifford dual carriageway.

Gda Magee said Mouse Ward and another man in the vehicle were known to him and he began to investigate the state of the vehicle which was towing a trailer.

Inside he found washing machines, Sky TV dishes and €36,000 worth of aluminium, the property of the ESB in Letterkenny.

Ward had already pleaded guilty to a range of driving offences connected to the incident and a previous incident in July.

Last September he was fined a total of €950 for a range of driving offences and failing to give Gardai a correct name. He was also banned from driving.

But Ward denied charges of handling stolen goods.

Guilty

However at this sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court Ward finally admitted the charges, entering a plea of guilty before Judge Keenan Johnson.

Ward, who is under a curfew and banned from associating with convicted criminals, is banned from entering Donegal except for court appearances.

He was released under the same conditions to allow a probation report to be prepared.

He will be sentenced for his role in the thefts on July 15.

ELECTION 2014: JOHN WATSON –“LET US MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER”

John Watson

John Watson officially launched his Fianna Fail election campaign last night, and the election launch proved to be a great success with a huge number of people gathering at the launch for Watson.

He was joined at the launch by Gary Clarke and Laurence Blake.

John was president of Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce in 2012 for two years and wanted to tackle the issues he has seen in the Donegal.  John Watson 1

He is a business man in Letterkenny, owner of Watson Home, Hire and Hardware.

Watson has been in business in Letterkenny for many years and has seen the changing environment in Donegal.

He is proud of the County and wanted to represent the people here.

Speaking at the launch of John Watson’s election campaign, Laurence Blake, former Councillor and Chairman of Letterkenny Town Council said he was delighted to endorse John’s candidature and campaign.

“I wish John every success with his campaign and I believe that Fianna Fail can take four seats in the forthcoming election.

He welcomed the selection of James Pat McDaid whom he described as an excellent choice and commiserated with Cllr Victor Fisher and his son David and wished them all well in the election.

Blake stressed that VOTE MANAGEMENT would be critical this time out as well as the usual hard work of knocking on doors.

Blake added, “I urge the Agents for the four candidates to sit down with the constituency Director of Elections for the Letterkenny Electoral Area and try and devise an electoral strategy for Vote Management.  John Watson 2

“This should concentrate initially on dividing areas between the four participants so as to maximise the First Preference vote.

He made it very clear that he did not want to hear any more talk about taking three seats and insisted that four seats are there for the taking.

“Four seats is there for the taking but we won’t get them unless a proper Vote Management Strategy has been implemented by the overall Director of Elections coupled with hard canvassing work.

Blake concluded his address by saying. “If on the 24th May at the count we have just managed three seats, I will consider that my work was not a success-even if John is elected.

Watson’s leadership role in the Chamber of Commerce and from being in business himself has made him aware of the tough times.

He has recognises the importance of the small business community.

Watson said he wants to work on helping theses small businesses.

He said, “Councils can’t create jobs but Councils can create an environment where businesses can grow thrive.

“I will make it a priority of mine to have our new council come up with ideas and schemes that will incentivise entrepreneurs to open new businesses in our town and surrounding villages.

“These schemes will have a twofold effect not only creating jobs but also the rejuvenation of areas that have been neglected for many years.

Watson also stated with the abolition of Letterkenny town council is going to be detrimental to Letterkenny’s progress and damaging to business and the wider community.

However being a business man he is adaptable to change and feels steps can be taken to counteract this move.

Watson wants to ensure that the infrastructure of the Letterkenny Electoral Area continues to improve.

The new link road in particular from Dry Arch to Ballyraine he felt must be prioritised to alleviate congestion in the town and try and make the road from the Dry Arch Roundabout to the Pole Star Roundabout safer.

He also mentioned issues such as the traffic lights at LYIT and that the decision to put traffic lights outside the LYIT must be reversed.

Some other issues were focused on children with special needs, under funding of the child psychology services and children with diabetes having limited access to a dedicated paediatric nurse.

Watson’s closing points were this election is crucial for the future Letterkenny Electoral Area.

Watson said, “I am confident that I am the strong voice this town needs to represent you for the next five years.

“We need strong people willing to make the tough decisions for this district.

“My primary focus will be on Letterkenny and the surrounding villages and towns.

“I really believe if we can build a strong, vibrant economy and community in Letterkenny all the other areas will be, ‘Let us make a difference together’.

Cancer survivor Majella O’Donnell has said she does not feels she deserves all the praise she gets in confronting her illness.

Majella's 'selfie'

Majella’s ‘selfie’

Majella had her hair shaved live on the Late Late Show last September after discovering she had breast cancer and was to undergo treatment.

She raised a staggering €600,000 for the Irish Cancer Society and has since undergone a double mastectomy operation.

But Majella insisted “I feel a little bit like I don’t deserve all the accolades I’m getting because for me, it was a simple thing to do.

“When people say ‘You’re brave’, or “you’re this or that”, I squirm a bit and think: “I’m not really, that’s just me.”

“If I’m bald and look ugly, I don’t really care what anybody thinks.”

Majella, wife of singer Daniel O’Donnell, was recently pictured taking part in the selfie craze which encouraged women to donate cash as they went without make-up.

But Majella revealed she had one up on some women as she posed for her own selfie.

“I have to admit that I’m not a big make-up person. Most of the time I don’t wear make-up. I usually wear it when I’m going out.

“I’m not one of those people who has to put it on first thing in the morning, I actually can’t be bothered with it,” she said.

Thomas PringleGP care in Donegal is in crisis, a meeting has heard, due to funding cuts by the Department of Health.

Speaking at a meeting with North West GPs in Donegal Town, Deputy Thomas Pringle paid tribute to the GPs for calling the meeting to outline the crisis in general practice across the country.

“The fact that funding for general practice has been cut by thirty-eight per cent since 2009 has put it into this crisis; we cannot continue to cut funding for services and expect them to deliver more,” said Deputy Pringle.

“Ninety-four per cent of contact with doctors in Ireland takes place in general practice and it needs immediate funding to continue patient safety and outcomes.

“The meeting sent a clear message that there will be no contract for under 6’s without negotiation with GPs and I am calling on the Minister for Primary Care Alex White to rebuild trust immediately with GPs and the Irish Medical Organisation,” stated Pringle.

McGUINNESS DEFENDS COST OF TRIP TO PORTUGAL FOR WARM-WEATHER TRAINING

Donegal manager Jim McGuinness has taken his players on a training camp to Portugal and has been defending the cost of the trip.

Jim McGuinness - Donegaldaily File

Jim McGuinness – Donegaldaily File

McGuinness said it will be a good warm up for their championship campaign and believes the benefits will outweigh the criticism of such trips.

He told the Irish Times: “One of the things about trips away is you get the chance to sit down and talk to players one-on-one.

“You’re also without the pressure of the lads going to work or going training or running home again. Everybody has their own little pressures at home as well, so to be out of that environment, and be nice and relaxed, is always good. And I suppose the bit of sun helps as well.

“It’s also good for us just to recharge the batteries after a hard enough league campaign, and just talk about football all the time. That can only be good for the whole group…”

It is not known the cost of the trip.

ELECTION 2014: CANVASSERS FACE APARTMENT BLOCK LOCKOUT – GALLIGAN

A large number of apartment dwellers in Letterkenny are not getting a chance to grill their local election candidates due to difficulties canvassing the complexes, according to election candidate Christy Galligan.

Election candidate Christy Galligan

Election candidate Christy Galligan

Gallligan sai d he is encountering many difficulties trying to canvass people in apartments and getting to speak to them face-to-face.

“This is far from ideal, and is denying people who live in apartments a chance to engage with the campaign.

“I’ve been unable to canvass apartments on the Lower Main Street, the Port Road, High Road, Neil T. Blaney Road and a number of other blocks in the town,” he revealed.

The former Garda Sergeant said he understood fully if people don’t want to engage with candidates.

“But there are always those who do, and who like to get a chance to quiz them on the doorstep.

“Buzzing an intercom in the hope that an apartment-dweller will answer and come down a few flights of stairs to talk to you is total pot-luck. I think we need a more innovative way of facilitating residents if they wish to engage a candidate, and to allow canvassers make their case to the electorate.

“I think local residents’ groups in the town need to find a solution to the problem, either by organising a local meeting at which candidates could attend, either within a complex or at a nearby location.

“Many people in these apartments might be of the negative equity generation and dealing with personal debt, so it is important that we get to engage with them, find out their issues, and discuss how it is that local public representatives can help them.

“People who live in apartments have just as much of a right to have a say in their local democracy and meet candidates as people in housing estates.”

Lovers of the cult musical movie – the Rocky Horror Picture Show – are in for a treat this week when the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny is transformed into a pop-up cinema showing the movie for one night only on Friday night!

The madcap movie – famous for the massive hit ‘The Timewarp’ – has a huge international cult following and audiences are usually well-prepared to get fully involved by dressing up as characters from the movie and joining in the fun.

“We’re certainly encouraging people to get into costume and join in the fun on the night. It will be an interactive cinema experience and it is not something that anybody ever forgets in a hurry,” said Lorraine Porter, captain of the Letterkenny Musical Society’s Relay for Life team who are hosting Friday night’s event.

She added: “We really wanted to do something musical and fun as one of our fundraisers and The Rocky Horror Picture Show certainly fits the bill. It is just one of those shows that lives long in the memory and we’re hoping that as well as dressing up people will also bring props like water pistols and newspapers, flashlights and rubber gloves!”

The LMS team captain however did stress that tickets for Friday night’s show (they cost €10 and it starts at 8pm) are strictly limited and she urged anyone interested to get in touch to book a ticket.

“The Regional Cultural Centre is going to be a superb venue for this but it does have a limited number of seats and while it’s possible that there will be tickets on sale on the night, I’d really urge people to make sure they get their tickets in advance to ensure they get in. And let’s face it, this is a one-off experience that you really don’t want to be missing!”

Some tickets are available at the Regional Cultural Centre or you can pre-book by sending an e.mail to lmsrockyhorror@gmail.com

Daniel became patron for the charity in June 2012 and joined hundreds of other volunteers on a 24 hour relay to celebrate the fight against cancer.

Daniel sat down with songwriter Marc Roberts to pen the song ‘I’ll See This Journey Through” especially for people battling cancer.

But just months after performing at the event, Daniel discovered that Majella had developed breast cancer.

Daniel revealed “It’s amazing I suppose how things come in life. I never imagined when I wrote the song ‘I’ll See This Journey Through” that it would be Majella’s journey and indeed my journey my journey so soon after we had it written,” he said.

Majella has raised the profile of cancer sufferers and also €600,000 for the Irish Cancer Society when she had her hair shaved on the Late Late Show.

Daniel and Majella are expected to appear at the 24 hour Relay for Life event which takes place in Letterkenny on May 31st.

A DONEGAL sheep farmer has agreed before the High Court not to interfere with the carrying out of electricity line upgrade works on his land.esb

The court heard the line is of vital importance in supplying electricity supply for the whole of Donegal.

The ESB and Eirgrid plc last week sought injunctions preventing Patrick Gallagher, Galdonagh, Manorcunningham, from interfering with or obstructing the work as well as orders requiring him to remove or remedy any obstructions which have been placed on the land at Listak.

Yesterday, Mr Gallagher undertook before Mr Justice Paul Gilligan to allow the ESB onto his lands and not to interfere with the work.

The court heard the works are needed on a 110kw power line and if not done could affect the entire electricity supply in Donegal.

The Irish Independent reports that Mr Gallagher, representing himself, said he had been in dispute with the ESB over compensation.

He said he was entitled such compensation from the ESB from work done on the lands in the 1990′s and also claimed there had been damage to his land during previous such works.

The court heard it had been agreed outstanding issues over compensation would go to arbitration.

The case was adjourned to June.
