Donegal are trailing Cavan by three points at half-time in what has been a hugely frustrating half for Maxi Curran’s side at the Athletic Grounds, Armagh.

Cavan have done an excellent job in containing the threat of Donegal U21 star Paddy McBrearty in the opening half of tonight's Ulster U21 final at the Athletic Grounds, Armagh.

Cavan have done an excellent job in containing the threat of Donegal U21 star Paddy McBrearty in the opening half of tonight’s Ulster U21 final at the Athletic Grounds, Armagh.

Both teams have set-up very defensively and subsequently both defences are stifling the forwards on both sides.

The goal by Joe Dillon midway through the first-half could prove to be a crucial score in this cagey, tight and ultra defensive affair.

Dillon finished superbly following a mistake in the Donegal defence, he rounded his man and buried it to the back of the net.

Cavan’s other two scores gave from frees from the boot of Kevin Bouchier.

Donegal’s opening point came from a free by Paddy McBrearty and the only point from play came from Willie Gillespie.

Cavan have dominated possession in the opening half, but have been wasteful and have kicked six wides.

Donegal will need a big second-half if their to prevent Cavan from winning their fourth successive Ulster U21 title.

There was heartbreak for Donegal tonight as they were defeated in dramatic circumstances to Cavan in tonight’s Ulster U21 final at the Athletic Grounds, Armagh.

Maxi Curran's Donegal U21 side were defeated in dramatic circumstances in tonight's Ulster Final against Cavan.

Maxi Curran’s Donegal U21 side were defeated in dramatic circumstances in tonight’s Ulster Final against Cavan.

Donegal were absolutely outstanding in the second-half and took the game to Cavan who were going for their fourth successive Ulster championship at this grade.

When Eoin McHugh put Donegal ahead with a fabulous effort with just two minutes of normal time to play Donegal looked on course to capture the Ulster U21 championship for the first time since 2010.

However, Cavan who looked down and out scored a fantastic goal through Liam Buchanan which absolutely stunned Donegal players, management and supporters.

Cavan then added another score quickly after to extinguish any hopes Donegal had of making a comeback.

They added two late points in injury-time,  and the final score of Cavan 2-6 Donegal 0-08 wasn’t a fair reflection on the game.

Cavan were the better side in the first-half and led by three points at the interval.

A goal by Joe Dillion and three points from Kevin Bouchier (all from frees) gave Cavan a 1-03 to 0-03 lead at the break.

Paddy McBrearty converted two frees and an excellent effort from Willie Gillespie kept Donegal in touch.

Cavan headed for the dressing room ruing missed chances, they kicked six wides in the opening half.

In the second-half Donegal were a different animal and completely dominated the game with Hugh McFadden and Ciaran Thompson getting a grip of things in the middle of the field.

Ryan and Eoin McHugh were outstanding while Paddy McBrearty grew into the match and was influential in the second-half despite being double marked for the entire match.

McBrearty levelled the game and then Ryan and Eoin McHugh scored successive points to put Donegal within touching distance of winning the Ulster title.

Cavan had only scored one point in the second-half, but with just ninety seconds of normal time left to play Liam Buchanan blasted to the back of the net to stun Donegal.

It was a cruel finish to a game Donegal didn’t deserve to lose.

Donegal were absolutely outstanding and to be denied in the circumstances they were was devastating.

Cavan have now won four Ulster U21 titles in a row, a great achievement for them.

Maxi Curran and his management staff and all the Donegal U21 panel can hold their heads up high, they were outstanding throughout this campaign and didn’t deserve to lose this match tonight.

They all did Donegal proud, a number of players on display tonight showed they’re capable of making the step-up from U21 level to Senior inter-county football for Donegal.

JURY GIVES UNANIMOUS ‘OPEN VERDICT’ ON DEATH OF YOUNG MOTHER

The jury in the inquest of the death of the late Mrs Margaret Morahan have returned a unanimous ‘open verdict’ decision following two days of evidence.

Coroner John Canon

Coroner John Canon

Mrs Morahan 45, of Glasagh, Derrybeg, took her own life on the 9th of January 2013.

The court heard how Mrs Morahan was left devastated following her suspension from her job as a nurse at Aras nursing home, Gaoth Dobhair in March 2012 for alleged misconduct.

Following a subsequent appeal she was relieved of her duties and given her P45 in December 2012.

On the 8th of January 2013 the court heard how her husband John Morahan who was in Ashbourne, Co.Meath working for Largo Foods, received an alarming text message from his wife.

In the text his wife had attached an e-mail in which she was going to send to her former employers at Aras, in the attachment Mrs Morahan indicated she was going to self-harm.

Mr Morahan clearly distressed and extremely worried by the content of the text made plans to return home immediately and went to Dublin Airport to get a flight back to Donegal.

On his arrival back to Donegal he immediately sought the medical help of Dr Anthony Delap.

Mr Morahan went to Dr Delap’s practice and asked him to section his wife as she was at risk to herself, he showed Dr Delap the text and attachment e-mail his wife had sent.

Dr Delap reassured Mr Morahan he had done the right thing in returning home and told him to go home to his wife and bring her in to see him.

If she resisited coming in, Dr Delap told Mr Morahan to ring the surgery.

Mrs Morahan refused to come in so Mr Morahan rang Dr Delap’s surgery and left a message with his secretary.

He never got any response from Dr Delap, he then proceeded to try and reach him again by ringing the surgery several times and then the emergency number several times but to no avail.

Dr Delap had also taken Mr Morahan’s number and he had hoped that Dr Delap would try to reach him.

Dr Delap never made any contact with Mr Morahan after their consultation at the surgery.

Later that evening Mr and Mrs Morahan went to bed, John Morahan held his wife’s hand and he fell asleep.

After a short while he awoke to find that his wife had gone from the bed, he searched the house for her and saw that the back door was open.

He knew she had gone to his father’s house which was unoccupied at the time.

There he found the body of his late wife who had tragically taken her own life.

Damien Tansey

Prior to her death the inquest heard how Mrs Morahan was on a significant amount of medication with one particular drug Cymbalta coming under scrutiny.

Dr Delap had prescribed Mrs Morahan with a six month subscription for Cymbalta which can be used to treat major depressive disorder and general anxiety.

The drug can also be used to treat those that suffer from Fibromyalgia or chronic low back pain which Mrs Morahan also suffered from.

Dr Delap insisted that Mrs Morahan was on the drug due to chronic back pain.

In his evidence Delap said: “Mrs Morahan visited the practice twice in 2012, and she saw me once in November 2012, we spoke about her work situation which at that stage was unresolved but she never disclosed any details that she was suffering from depression.

“The first time I’d heard she was dismissed from her position was when her husband John visited me on January the 8th.”

Soliticor Damien Tansey, representing the family of Mrs Morahan raised several issues with Dr Delap’s handling of the situation.

Damien Tansey said, “You’re aware she’s having trouble in her job and you know she’s had a history of depression, would you not consider her situation as a trigger for depression and anxiety.

“You then proceeded to double her dosage of Cymbalta, a drug which manufacturers of the product state clearly that any patient on the drug be monitored regularly something you can’t do if you’re prescribing six month prescriptions.”

A text the late Mrs Morahan sent a friend on January the 3rd 2013, was read out in court.

It read: “Doctor doubled my dosage of anti-depressants, struggling to drag my carcass out of bed in this weather, I think I’ve misplaced my Mojo.”

Coroner John Cannon in his address to the jury said” “It appears to me that the turning point in the life of Mrs Morahan was on the 22nd of December 2012 when she received her P45 from her employer and when she recieved her last wage on the 28th of December.

“She had reached a point of no return, from the e-mails she sent prior to her death it was clear her life had disintegrated.

“She had felt hopelessness and was worried she’d never gain employment in her profession again following her dismissal.

“She was worried at how they would make mortgage repayments and she saw no way out.

“In his evidence John Morahan spoke of how he saw huge changes in his beloved wife Margaret and how she had began to drink more and rarely left the house.

“That Christmas was a quiet one for the family and Margaret only left on a few occasions to attend Mass and once to go for a walk.”

Coroner Cannon said that as Mrs Morahan was a qualified nurse she would have been more qualified than most with the benefits and negatives associated with taking a drug like Cymbalta.

Coroner Cannon said: “Considering she was a nurse she was well aware of the benefits and potential negatives associated with taking a drug like Cymbalta.”

He added: “The dosage of 30 that was then doubled to 60 seems mild to me and she had been on the medication for two years prior to her death.”

Coroner Cannon then appeared to criticise Mr Morahan for not contacting NowDoc after his attempts to reach Dr Delap had failed.

He said: “I can’t understand why Mr Morahan only decided to speak to Dr Delap when he felt his wife was at such risk and asked for her to be sectioned.

“I can’t comprehend why he didn’t contact NowDoc when all his attempts to reach Dr Delap had failed.

“Unfortunately the role of the local GP has changed, a time when they were always available doesn’t exist anymore due to the demands placed upon them.”

The coroner then directed the options available to the jury before they made their deliberations on the case.

He ruled out the option of death by medical misadventure on the grounds that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to back that theory up.

Damien Tansey in his address to the jury before the inquest was adjourned last week, called for the jury to return a verdict of death by misadventure.

Tansey said: “Mr Morahan came to Dr Delap for help, he asked his wife to be sectioned, if he had received an appropriate response we wouldn’t be here today.

“What more could John Morahan have done on that day, he couldn’t do anymore.

“In my respectful opinion the verdict should be death by misadventure, that is the proper verdict when somebody is exposed to risk and suffers as a consequence of that risk.”

Kevin Dunne solicitor for Dr Delap had called for the jury to return a verdict of death by suicide.

He said: “Mrs Morahan visited Dr Delap two months before her death but never disclosed details of her depression.

“I’d ask you to accept Dr Delap’s evidence that she was on Cymbalta for two years due to chronic back pain.

“I’d ask you to accept the testimony given by the pathologist, the post mortem found no drugs in Mrs Morahan’s system and the verdict should be returned as suicide.”

The ten person jury returned a unanimous ‘open verdict’ decision.

There was no rider – or recommendations – made in addition to the verdict given by the jury.

Coroner Cannon concluded by saying: “I wish to express sincere sympathies to Mr Morahan and his children for their devastating loss.

“The inquest has been the re-telling of an extremely difficult and very sad time in your life.

“In Mr Morahan’s evidence he told how Mags was a very good person that would do anything to help someone and that she was very active in the community.

“She was a great mother to our children and was the life and soul of the family.”

Those sentiments were reiterated by Damien Tansey who also thanked the jury for their diligence throughout what was a difficult inquest.

Mr Tansey said: “I want to thank the jury for their efforts during this case and want to thank them for the responsibility they showed throughout the case, medical matters are complex and the terminology used is difficult but I want to thank them for being so diligent.

“Hopefully this verdict will now give closure to the family as they attempt to fill a gap which undoubtedly arises in a family when you lose a loved one.

“Hopefully they can begin to put their lives back together after their tragic loss of someone that was so important to them and someone they loved so much.”

The denim sale is expected to bring large crowds to Evolve for great bargains.

The experts at Evolve Menswear have shared a few tips on choosing jeans during this Easter Denim Sale, particularly the fit which is one of the most important factors when investing in a new pair of jeans.

With denim continuing to play a major role within the modern gent’s wardrobe, even the smallest tweak to your current collection can help instantly bring your look up to date. Trying a new wash, fit or even a different brand can add a new dimension to your personal style and ensure your wardrobe doesn’t become stale.

The Fit:

Low-rise, straight-cut, skinny – these are just some of the styles that you’ll be able to choose from when shopping for a good pair of jeans. The trick is to figure out which cut suits your body type the best. For example if you’re quite tall, you’ll want to stay away from skinny jeans as they will elongate your frame. Similarly, a low-rise pair of jeans on a shorter person just won’t look good. If you’re a bit overwhelmed, opt for a no-nonsense straight cut, which is a look that almost anyone can pull off. Also make sure that when you’re trying on your jeans that the back and crotch areas aren’t too tight. Sit down in the dressing room or in the store and check if the jeans are cutting into your waist or are too tight in certain areas.

The fit determines how they feel. How they feel determines how you look. And how you look is what good jeans are all about. Choose the fit accordingly.

ETO2 ETO2

Slim Fit

Slim…not skinny! Slim-fit jeans should slightly hug the thighs, knees, and calves while loosening up around your ankles. The presence of fabric against your calf might take getting used to, but how they look — crisp, sharp, clean — makes it worth it.

Straight-Leg Fit

A little more forgiving than the slim fit, the straight-leg fit is cut more or less the same all the way down, meaning the jeans feel close in the thighs but looser in the knees and calves. To help ease that closeness in the thighs, look for denim with a touch of stretch.

Classic Fit

Cut loose throughout, these jeans are for guys who want their thighs to breathe. Only hitch: A loose fit below the knee can result in some flare (or, worst case, a bell-bottom effect). Opt for a length with about an inch-and-a-half break (which will minimize the bunching of any extra cloth), and if that doesn’t do the trick, feel free to roll up the cuffs a bit.

Relaxed Fit

The roomiest of all the options, blessed with a fuller leg and seat. For them to look their best, the jeans should sit snugly at or just below your natural waist, found right above your hips

The Colour

Blue may be a classic colour for jeans, but in the past few years there has been an explosion of colour when it comes to denim. You can find almost any colour under the rainbow, so there’s no excuse for you not to try on something other than blue. Try out black, grey or even maroon for a very different look. A pair of dark denim is a wardrobe essential, as it can be worn to the office with a smart shirt and shoes or worn casually with a tee and jacket.

The Wash

And we are not talking about taking care of how you wash your jeans, but to the wash that’s sometimes applied to jeans or the fabric during the manufacturing process. Different washes produce denim of different shades and textures. Avoid jeans that have been faded out too much as they tend to attract a bit too much attention. Also stay clear from jeans that have excessive fading on the thigh or crotch areas. Choose a pair that’s been lightly treated and one that also suits your complexion a bit better.

ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR THE DONEGAL BAY CYCLING CLUB SPORTIVE EVENT

$

timthumb.phpBy Paul McGroary: It’s all system go this week for the Donegal Bay Cycling Club as they host the second edition of the Donegal Bay Spring Sportive Leisure event this Sunday April 13th.

The first running of the event last year proved to a great success, with more than 200 cyclists turning up to participate, and the feedback received was very positive. The hope this year is to build on the success of the first edition and turn the event into one of the best leisure events in the country.

The formula is once again similar to last year with three routes to choose from 50/100/150k.

There are small alterations to the route’s from last year with the circuit’s of the Donegal By-pass now excluded.

The 50k route now includes a new loop around Ballintra-Laghey whilst the 100/150k route’s has a few new changes, with a section along the coast at Mountcharles, a new loop around Glenties/Maas/Clooney and a new route home via the Ardaghey road from Ardara to Inver. The food stop on the longer routes has also moved to the top of the hill in Ardara just so the cyclists are not faced with a hill straight after the refuelling!!!

The scenery on each route is some of the best Donegal has to offer with magnificent coastal scenery and plenty of boglands in the wilds of Donegal. Indeed the scenery on offer proved to be one of the big draws for people attending the event last year, and one of the long-term aim’s would be to turn the event into a major sporting/tourist event that would draw people to Donegal Town and the surrounding areas.

With the option of three distances to choose from, the Sportive accommodates a wide selection of cyclists. From those who are just getting into the sport to those who are looking for a real tough challenge.

Many sportives don’t really cater to the newer cyclist but the club feel this is an important part of getting more people out on their bicycles. As such the 50km distance is perfect for the newer cyclist. You don’t need a huge amount of training and only a few weeks or so of preparation would probably see the average joe non cyclist capable of completing the 50km route.

The other big plus is the Sportive is not a race but more of a fun day out. Yes, there will always be a few who are hammering along but really the idea is that you cycle at whatever pace you feel comfortable. There are no prizes on offer and the reward is just getting out on your bike, enjoying the countryside and the satisfaction you gain from finishing the event.

Registration for the Sportive is from 8:30am to 9:30 am at the Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town with the cycle starting at 10:00 from The Diamond. Helmet’s are compulsory for participation.

There will be a food stop on each route as well as hot food at the finish for those cyclist’s who participate in the 100/150km routes.

Further information can be found on the club website Donegalbaycyclingclub.com or the Donegal Bay CC Spring Sportive facebook page.

Route Previews:

50km Route: The 50km route leaves the Diamond in Donegal Town and heads out the N15 toward Ballyshannon continuing south as far as the village of Ballintra, then it turns left onto the old main road heading north again back towards Laghey. Anyone who has competed in the Donegal Bay Club League will be familiar with this section as it used as the road race circuit. From Laghey the course crosses the Seven arches bridge and heads out on the quiet backroads towards Barnesmore taking in some lovely scenery with a refreshments stop at the old school Barnesmore before hitting the main Donegal-Ballybofey road just before Barnesmore Gap. Across the main road and it’s back on to the back-roads as the route heads west again dropping down past the shore of Lough Eske and continuing on mostly flat roads until it comes out on the N56 west of Donegal Town. The route then turns east back toward Donegal Town passing through the town and finishing at the Abbey Vocational with refreshments a

nd a hot shower awaiting those with weary legs

100km Route: Starting at the Diamond, the 100km heads west on the N56 before turning off the main road just before the village of Mountcharles were it drops down to the shore road, past the pier and back up to the Doorin line before rejoining the N56 at Inver. Continuing west through Dunkineely and Bruckless, the route changes direction just before Killybegs at the five points junction, taking a right and heading back toward Ardara where there will be a refreshments stop. Now refueled, the route continues on through Glenties and heads toward Dungloe but cuts off at Maas to do a loop past Kildoney and Portnoo before re-entering Ardara, its down the hill and then left, climbing out of Ardara on the road back to Inver through a landscape of bog and heather. Once back on the N56, its east again toward Donegal Town and finishing at the Abbey Vocational School for the re-energising.

150km: The first part of the long route is the same as the 100km as far as the five points junction but rather than turning off, the long route continues west through the fishing town of Killybegs, out past Fintra and just after the Blue Haven Hotel leaves the main road to take the beautiful scenic Coast road into the village of Kilcar and then onto Carrick. The scenery starts to get more stark now but remains enchanting and beautiful as we head further west before dropping down into the village of Glencolumbkille where we cannot go much further west, instead the route turns east and takes the quiet back road back toward Ardara. Its down the famous Glengesh pass which will come as a relief to many and it’s no time at all to the refreshments stop in Ardara. The remaining part of the route mirrors the 100km all the way back to the finish in Donegal Town

Laura says the men who helped them save her three children “rescued my world.”

A MOTHER of three young children trapped inside a car after a crash has appealed for help in tracing the men who rescued them.

Laura Faulkner, from Ballyclare in Co Antrim, found herself trapped with her husband and three young children, at the side of the road near Ballybofey.

The car flipped upside down during the road traffic accident and the five members of the Faulkner family couldn’t get out.

But three mystery Donegal men raced to their aid and managed to get them out of the vehicle to safety.

Mum Laura told Donegal Daily they were terrified.

But for the actions her mystery rescuers, she believes anything could have happened.

She told us: “We were driving last Sunday morning near Ballybofey when our car came off the road and we ended upside down in a ditch.

“A group of lads were in the car behind us and came down immediately to help and got my kids out.

“I have no idea who these lads were but I would love to find them and tell them how much I appreciate them jumping straight in to help.

“We were unable to get out and I was terrified.

“I would be delighted if Donegal Daily readers could help trace these young men. I just want them to know when they pulled my 3 month old, 18 month old and 4 year old out the car that they rescued my world.

“I cannot thank them enough.”

* IF you helped the Faulkner family or know who did, please email us at info@donegaldaily.com so we can pass on your details to Laura.

Paul Hannigan, in addressing the assembled group of students, referred to the many demands of the education system in third level colleges such as LYIT and hoped that the Clubs and Societies programme, which had started many years ago in the institute, would continue to grow in the manner that it has done to date.

This could not have happened without the support of the people behind the scenes, namely the Finance Committee and Registration Committee, Fiona Kelly SU Administrator and Paddy Gallagher, Sports Officer all of whom he congratulated for their efforts.

Deele College in Raphoe is the new standard bearer in the world of ‘technology in education’ with the launch of their new interactive school app.

The secondary school is the first school in the county to launch their own app, which is now available on the android and apple stores.

It is envisioned that this app will provide a stronger link between parents and the school, with various features, which will allow parents to send notes on absenteeism, see homework assignments and monitor students’ progress.

The school has made huge strides on the technology front in recent years with the introduction of an ICT team, who have earmarked various projects to enhance the technology in the school.

Dean Reynolds, Amy Brolly, Danny McFadden, Gavin Meehan and Neil Meehan

Dean Reynolds, Amy Brolly, Danny McFadden, Gavin Meehan and Neil Meehan

Along with the app, the school is preparing to launch their wireless internet service in the school in the coming months, which will allow teachers to use the latest technologies, such as IPads in the classroom.

The app itself, which was launched last week, will allow students to access daily timetables on their phones and tablets, as well as exam timetables and study guides. It is hoped that students will be able to access all homework assignments via the app from the beginning of September and that students will also be able to submit homework via the app.

Deele College Principal Mr. PJ McGowan says this app is the latest initiative in the developing world of IT in schools and as an aid to teaching and learning.

Dean Reynolds, Amy Brolly, Gavin Meehan, and Neil Meehan

Dean Reynolds, Amy Brolly, Gavin Meehan, and Neil Meehan

“As a tool for communication it will greatly improve links between parents and the school and the chief benefactors are the students. We are very grateful to Reynolds of Raphoe for their generous sponsorship towards the development of the app.

“We are also appreciative of the team of people within the school led by Mr Danny McFadden who had the foresight and willingness to follow an idea and develop the app”

With technology evolving at such a rapid pace, Deputy Principal of the school, Mr Danny McFadden says that it is imperative that Deele College embraces the new educational tools available through the latest technology.

“Students today are immersed in technology and we want to use this to show students that learning can be interactive and fun. The launch of this app is an important step for the school but it is also just the beginning, as we strive to improve our ICT infrastructure to meet the demands of 21st century education.

“Parents play such a vital part in a student’s education and we want to foster greater links

between the school and parents. Parents will be able to see what is going on in the school via our monthly newsletter and also keep track of the work undertaken by students. It provides a new way to interact with parents, as they can receive notes via the app about important events in the school, such as parents’ evenings and prize giving. Teachers can upload assignments and receive them via the app, which is a huge step forward in terms of teacher/student interaction.”

The app, which has been generously sponsored by local company, Reynolds of Raphoe has already been a huge hit among students and parents and the school management would encourage everyone connected to the school to download the app to their phone or tablet.

While many others will follow suit in the coming months and years, it is great to see a Donegal school leading the way.

A report on whether a man charged with dangerous driving causing the death of eight people is fit to plead is to be compiled.

Shaun Kelly

Shaun Kelly

A suitable expert has been found to assess Shaun Kelly, 24, who is charged with the offences outside Clonmany, Co Donegal in 2010.

Mr Kelly, of Ballymagann, Buncrana, was the driver of the car in which seven of his friends died and the driver of a coming in the opposite direction was also killed.

Earlier this week Judge Keenan Johnson had told the State he urgently needed to have an expert assigned to Mr Kelly to see if he was fit to plead.

At Letterkenny Circuit Court today State prosecutor Patricia McLaughlin today told Judge Johnson that she had found an expert Dr Mark Mulrooney, a Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

The court heard that Dr Mulrooney will examine Mr Kelly on April 26th and make his report after that.

The defence are also having reports compiled on Mr Kelly.

Kelly appeared in court as did several family members of those killed in the crash on July 11th, 2010.

Judge Keenan Johnson said he was very anxious to have the matter dealt with.

“It should be expedited as it is dragging on for far too long,” he said.

The case has ben adjourned on several occasions and both Judge John O’Hagan, the residing judge and Judge Johnson have expressed their disappointment the case has not be dealt with.

The state prosecutor Ms McLaughlin asked to be furnished with the report on Mr Kelly a week before the fitness to plead appearance.

Judge Johnson said he will liaise with Judge O’Hagan to finalise a date for the fitness to plead appearance.

The men who died in the crash on July 11th, 2010 were Hugh Friel (66), Urris, Clonmany, Eamon McDaid (22)of Ballymagan, Buncrana; Mark McLaughlin, (21) of Ballinahone, Fahan; Paul Doherty (19), of Ardagh, Ballyliffin; Ciaran Sweeney (19), of Ballyliffin; PJ McLaughlin (21), of Rockstown, Burnfoot; James McEleney (23), of Meenaduff, Clonmany and Damien McLaughlin (21), of Umricam, Buncrana.

Kilmacrennan NS made history today as they captured the Ulster indoor GAA title for the first time in the schools history.

The girls stormed to the title by overcoming Derry and Down in the group stages.

They were paired with the Armagh champions at the semi final stage.

They won this in style to set up a rematch with the Derry champions who they had beaten in the group stages.

The final saw the Donegal girls get off to a flying start with three early goals.

This paved the way for success and saw them lift the title for the first time.

This Ulster title adds to the quiz title won only last week at Ulster level.

So they’re as good academically as they’re on the pitch.

Congratulations on a wonderful double!

ELECTION 2014: GERARD HOPING TO GET ‘PICKETT’ IN LOCAL ELECTIONS

Burtonport man Gerard Pickett will consult with his family before deciding whether or not to run as an independent candidate in the Glenties Electoral Area in the forthcoming elections next month.

Burtonport artist Gerard Pickett is considering running as an independent candidate in next month's local elections.

Burtonport artist Gerard Pickett is considering running as an independent candidate in next month’s local elections.

Public support has swelled for Pickett since he announced his intention to run, a sizeable crowd turned out in O’Donnell’s Bar, Burtonport on Monday night to show their support for Pickett.

Those that assembled at the public meeting have urged Pickett to run, and have assured him that he’ll have their full support.

Pickett, encouraged by the turn-out, says he is now seriously considering the option of running as an independent candidate, but said he would seek further consultation with his family before making a decision.

Support for Pickett gained momentum when he publicly spoke out about some of the issues he would address at local level with the Council if he were elected.

Pickett has serious concerns over the impending legislation set to be introduced regarding foreshore licenses.

Pickett told the meeting. “If this legislation is introduced it could be the final hammer blow to a fishing village that has suffered more than most.

“The legislation would mean that any local fisherman that wants to fish off the rocks by gathering winkles and cockles would need a license to do so.

“The requirement of a license, which would no doubt be costly, would be detrimental to the local economy.

“The thought that the Government would impose such legislation really is another kick in the teeth for small local fishermen that are already struggling as it is.

“Enough is enough, the people of this community have suffered enough as it is already and we need to stand together and say stop.

Pickett also told the crowd he would urge the County Council to hand over the BIM Ice-Plant back to the local fishermen of Burtonport.

“I’d ask the Council to hand over the BIM Ice-Plant back to the fishermen of this area.

“It’s scandalous that when local fishermen land their catch in Burtonport there is nowhere for them to sort and distribute their catch.

“The plant is lying idle it should be given back to local fishermen.

Pickett also said he would lobby for the re-introduction of spending on bog roads around the area, saying you’d need a helicopter to get access to some of the bogs.

“I’d ask them to re-introduce spending on bog roads, locals use the bog as a renewable energy source through the winter, but the availability to access these bogs are worsening, in some cases you’d need a helicopter just to get in to some of the bogs.

Pickett ended his address by thanking those that came out in support of him and said he would make a decision on whether or not he would run early next week.

Cllr Gary Doherty has warned the public to be aware of telephone scammers claiming to be from Microsoft.

Cllr Doherty has warned the public to be aware of telephone scammers who are pretending to be from Microsoft.

The scammers are calling landlines and asking householders that they have an issue with their Windows PCs.

Cllr Doherty said “I myself have received a number of these calls in the last week and the latest incident was just this afternoon, Thursday.

“What these scammers are doing is calling the landline claiming to be from Microsoft.

“They are telling people that they have detected a virus on their computer’s hard drive and they need to fix the issue.

“They will ask that you perform a number of tasks on your PC while you are talking to them on the phone.

“This is to allow them remote access to your pc so they would have access to all your personal information.

“They will sound like genuine Microsoft employees, but believe me they most certainly are not.”

Cllr Doherty added, “In this age of internet banking and online shopping these scammers are taking advantage of the wealth of personal information including credit card details and bank details that is stored on laptops and PCs.

“These guys rang my house numerous times attempting tonight get access to my PC but my wife refused.

“I then spoke to them today and asked if they thought I was stupid.

“Their reply was to tell me to “f*** off”.

Doherty concluded by saying, “I would warn people that Microsoft do not call anyone to fix viruses remotely.

“If you receive a call from a person with an accent from the Indian sub-continent pertaining to be from Microsoft my advice is to hang up immediately.

Large potholes have appeared on Letterkenny dual carriageway says local councillor.

A Donegal councillor says urgent action is needed on Letterkenny’s dual carriageway to prevent a serious accident taking place.

Letterkenny Town Councillor Gerry Mc Monagle claims recent winters have caused large potholes to develop on the road.

The Sinn Fein councillor says he has received reports of several near misses by motorists swerving to avoid the potholes and has witnessed other incidents himself.

Cllr Gerry McMonagle

Cllr Gerry McMonagle

He is now calling on Donegal County Council to examine the road and carry out the necessary repairs before it is too late.

“This is one of busiest roads in the county and its importance to commerce and accessibility in and out of Letterkenny cannot be over estimated.

“With so many vehicles using this road it is important that it is maintained to a high standard. Continued depreciation of this road could lead to road traffic accidents due to the poor state of the road surface.

“Driving along the carriageway I have witnessed in recent days motorist swerving to miss potholes on the carriageway this is a dangerous action and I would call on motorist to drive safely at all times,” he said.

He said the council also have an duty to keep the roads safe and fit for purpose.

“I am therefore calling on Donegal County Council Roads Section to immediately put in place a scheme to repair the road before a serious accident happens.”

Former Keadue Rovers boss John Francis Doogan has been appointed the new Finn Harps reserves manager.

Hegarty stepped down from the role citing personal and work commitments as the main reasons for his departure.

Doogan has a wealth of experience in both coaching and managing.

He has manged both the Keadue Rovers and Gweedore Celtic senior sides.

Doogan has a UEFA B license and is regarded by many as one of the best coaches in the county.

Doogan has expressed his delight at being given the opportunity to work with the Finn Harps reserve side.

He told the club’s official website,  ”I am delighted to be offered the opportunity to come to Finn Harps and I am really looking forward to the challenge.

“I hope to build on the good work Sam has done and like every coach I would like to also put my own stamp on the project.

“Ollie and James are only interested in players that are dedicated to the right preparation and total commitment, so that will be something I will be emphasising to the players from the start.

“Everyone knows there is a lot of promising young players throughout the County so I will be striving to create an environment where these lads continue to develop their game.
