This year’s camp is at Loreto Convent from July 14 to 18 for girls aged between 11 and 13.

The Michaela Foundation Girls’ Summer Camp is based on 5 core values; Faith, Fashion, Fun, Irish and Wellbeing.

Jam packed with fun activities, here is a little taster of what Campettes will doing— having parties and “ Rocking the Boat” in Faith, unleashing their creativity and individuality making jewellery and customising bags in Fashion, dancing in Fun, learning their favourite pop songs as gaelige in Irish, zumba dancing and drama in wellbeing! One Campette said, “Awesome, extraordinary. The best thing I’ve ever done!”

Parents noticed the impact too, one parent posted on Facebook “Enrol your young girl – she will love it! Last year my daughter emerged much more mature and thoughtful.”

Not to mention the benefits leaders’ obtain from participation, “I benefitted greatly from the camp. I gained friends for life and skills that I can use time and time again.”

John McAreavey from Michaela Foundation told Donegal Daily: “We are delighted to be able to spread the camp to 12 venues this summer, including Donegal.

“Several camps were full within 12 hours of registration opening this year, which I think shows just how much the Campettes enjoyed it and how much parents valued it last year.

“We have a great team of volunteers at our Donegal camp in Letterkenny. They having been putting in lots of hard work to ensure each Campette will have a fun, enriching and memorable week! I would encourage people to sign up soon, as places are going fast.”

GAA NEWS: RED HUGHS BEATEN BY NAOMH COLMCILLE

Senior Menred hughs

Division Three Reserve

The cross lads were the better side in the first half but were very wasteful in front of goal kicking eight wides before the break. They went in 06 to 0-3 up but there should have been more daylight between the sides.

The home team scored the first point of the second half to go four up but that was to be their final score of the match. The men from Newton powered to victory scoring 2-5 unanswered. The final score was Red Hughs 0-7 Naomh Colmcille 2-8

Division Three Senior

This was one of the most anticipated encounters of the weekend with Naomh Colmcille the visitors to the Cross looking to get one over on their ex-manager Stephen Friel.

The visitors scored the first point of the game after only 30 seconds on the clock when their midfield man struck from distance. They struck again five minutes later to go two up. The Reds got to grips with the visitors and scored two points of their own to level the game up with two frees from Damien Brown. The visitors were strong in the middle of the park and were winning the lions share of possession they went one up again in the thirteenth minute when their centre half forward kicked over another long distance effort before Brown equalised with another free. It was a close hard battle with hard tackles flying in from the visitors who used their physicality to their advantage. The Newton men scored one more before Brown struck another two before the break to leave the Reds one up at half time. The Half Time score Red Hughs 0-5 Naomg Colmcille 0-4

The visitors started the second half as they did the first scoring a point in the first few seconds. The Reds then sparked to life and upped the tempo moving the ball a lot faster than they had in the first half and the visitors struggled to get possession. A sweeping move from the back line seen the ball tapped over the bar from the young Johnny Carlin to finish off a great move. From the kick out the Naomh Colmcille side scored another point to tie the match up once again. Two minutes later in an almost carbon copy move of Carlin’s point, this time seen Calvin Bradley rattling the net with a well taken goal. The Reds were a goal up but failed to put the visitors away and they rallied with three unanswered points to again put them level. It was a rip roaring contest with both sides going for it. With the game now in the last minute and both sides frantically looking for the winning point Red Hughs broke up the pitch with speed Cathal Doherty delivered a fine pass inside to Bradley who rounded the defender a goal chance was on but he took the sensible option to tap it over to put them one up with the game now in injury time. From the resulting kick out the visitors got the break in the middle of the park and went on the attack. Their number eight tried his luck from distance to try and level proceedings again but it was drifting wide before their corner back somehow got his fist to the ball catching everyone unaware and Reds keeper Luke Kelly was unable to stop it from ending up in the net. Time was up and the ref called a halt to the game from the kick out. It was a victory that Naomh Colmcille wanted badly and celebrated like they had just won the championship but that was just measure of what it meant to them.

The final score was Red Hughs 1-9 Noamh Colmcille 1-10

Buncrana GAA Notes for Week Ending Sunday 15th June 2014Buncrana gaa logo

Senior Football

It was a disappointing end to the Seniors long trip to Naomh Brid on Friday night. The home side were strong in the first half, going in 6 points up at half-time. Buncrana came out for the second half determined to make a game of it and in a period of domination they managed to reduce the home sides lead to 2 points. Unfortunately for Buncrana, Naomh Brid were then awarded a penalty which the keeper initially saved only for the home side to get the deflected ball into the net for the goal that finally killed off Buncrana’s gallant fight-back. Final score was Naomh Bríd 1-10 Buncrana 0-9.

BUNCRANA EDGE OUT EUNANS IN HUMDINGER U14 CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Buncrana 5-04 St. Eunan’s 4-02

The spectators in Convoy’s Centre of Excellence for the county ‘A’ hurling final were treated to fine weather, fine drama and to great commitment from all thirty plus players.

Buncrana won it in the final minute with a goal from Cathal Óg Wilson. It could so easily have gone the other way.

Not thirty seconds earlier a strike from Eunan’s excellent Shane O’Donnell had goal written all over it but for high heroics from the Buncrana keeper, Óisín Kelly. The final minute reflected drama from the throw in by Senior Referee Hugo Wallace from Burt.

Buncrana got the scoreboard ticking with a point from Aaron Craig. Shane O’Donnell got his first of three goals and followed with a couple of points.

Aaron Craig on twenty minutes hit the Eunans net. Niall O’Doherty followed with a point for the Scarvey boys. When Letterkenny’s Ethan Doherty rattled the Buncrana goal Eunans had taken control. The Buncrana mums and dads looked worried. Their sons had swept all before them up till this point. They were League and County Féile champs and favourites to complete the treble.

The O’Donnell Park manager, Gordon Randles’ boys were fighting tooth and claw and led by a goal with halftime beckoning. Matty Mulholland a touch of class from Inis Eoghain then nets and equalizes . The end of the first half – All square.

Early after the restart Eunans miss from the penalty spot. Buncrana get another three pointer through Cathal Óg. Eunans step up to the mark: Shane O’Donnell’s two strikes score to the value of six points. The Letterkenny lads lead by a goal. Buncrana mammies are more worried. Niall O’Doherty points a free. The difference is two points. Jason McLaughlin’s fine goal leaves Buncrana a point to the good. Eunans attack : wide, wide, save. And again attack, attack, spectacular save. Ryan Hegarty points for Buncrana .

The last sixty seconds will live long in the spectators’ memories. Both squads shone. Managers Cathal Wilson and Gordon Randles and their coaching teams have very fine players for the future. Both teams were praised by the Donegal County Minor Board for a terrific game of sporting hurling.

U14 Football

The boys did brilliantly and have now qualified for the Div 1 Championship final. This is a great achievement for a really talented and dedicated bunch of lads. They overcame their close neighbours Muff in an exciting and tense affair which lived up to all the pre-match expectations. A highly billed game lived up to the name with high scoring and great commitment shown by both teams. Although Buncrana started well they found themselves 3 points down at half time. After a half time chat the boys came out in the second half and scored 3 unanswered goals. This laid a platform for the rest of the half with Muff now chasing the game. Although Buncrana went on to win by a good margin it didn’t feel like that on the line as both teams gave their all right up to the final whistle. Both teams deserve great praise for their commitment and fair play. Next up is McCools in the final with the date to be confirmed. Hopefully Buncrana can get some of their wounded players back fit and ready for the final, we’re sure none of the players will want to lose out on that after all their hard work to get the team there.

Under 14 Girls Football

The girls lost narrowly to Ballyshannon last week by 2 points. The management knew that the trip would take its toll on performance, especially in a school week, and tried to rearrange the date to a Friday or weekend to facilitate our young primary school players but unfortunately this was not possible.

As expected, our performance in the first half was not up to our usual high standards and we were second to the ball and failed to tackle and break down the Bundoran attacks. However, thanks to the goalkeeping of Leah Gallinagh and with Shannon Hegarty taking some fine scores, we finished the first half trailing by only one point.

At the break some tactical switches and substitutions were made and the Buncrana girls finally blew away the cobwebs and started to dominate for most of this half. It was clear from the team’s performance that despite their youthfulness they were the better team and they took the game to Bundoran. The girls competed for every ball and played and moved the ball much better as a team. Bundoran’s defence, especially the half back line, was the defining factor in this game as they absorbed the pressure and minimised our scoring chances. The final score was Bundoran 5-4 Buncrana 5–2 in what was a very exciting game right up to the final whistle. The girls can be proud of their performance and will have learned a lot from this game, especially the younger girls.

Well done to:

Leah Gallinaigh, Rachel Gillespie, Niamh Grant, Lucy Herron, Ciara Doherty, Orlaith Mc Cracken, Chloe Frazer, Sophie Doherty (captain) Caoimhe Doherty, Courtney Clare, Nicole Donaghey, Mia McCusker, Catherine Mc Gonigle, Shannon Hegarty, Derbhla Gleeson, Aoife McGill, Rachel McLaughlin, Beth Doherty, Caitlin Gillespie , Briana Doherty

U8s

Our U8s held a home Blitz on Saturday welcoming Robert Emmets, St Eunans and Glenswilly.

A total of 11 teams played great football showing very good skill and determination at this early age. It was a pleasure to watch from the sideline. Thanks to all our young referees who did a great job. Thanks to the Players, Coaches and Parents who helped make this a successful day.

A new Twitter page, Donegal Mór Hurling, has been launched to compliment Donegal Óg Hurling which is enjoying an increasing number of contributions and visits.

The aim is to spread news of senior hurling events, results and fixtures within the broader GAA and hurling community. Information, hopefully, will come from club or board secretaries. Suggestions are welcome.

Cardiac Screening

Following the completion of a two year research programme in which nearly 300 GAA players were examined in an attempt to assess the effectiveness of various screening methods, the GAA’s Medical, Scientific & Welfare Committee updated its position paper on cardiac screening.

The GAA now advise that the most effective way to identify risk is for players over the age of 14 to undergo cardiac screening on one occasion. It is also advised that this process be repeated before the age of 25. Players should consult their team or family doctor if they wish to get screened and screening should consist of completion of the GAA’s Cardiac Screening Questionnaire, a Physical Examination and an ECG.

As part of its commitment in this context and to aid diagnosis, the GAA in conjunction with the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) have implemented a programme whereby any doctors carrying out a cardiac screening programme for a GAA player will be able to send that ECG to the cardiac department in the Mater under Dr. Joseph Galvin to have a sports cardiology opinion on the ECG.

In order to avail of this service, GP’s should contact Ruairí Harvey, the GAA’s Player Welfare Administrator in Croke Park (ruairi.harvey@gaa.ie or 01 865 8685).

We would recommend that any interested players, parents or guardians download the Cardiac Screening Questionnaire, or alternatively there will be some copies available in the clubhouse. http://www.gaa.ie/medical-and-player-welfare/cardiac-screening/

A Letterkenny man kicked in the front door of his ex-girlfriend’s house and then spat in her face after thinking she had another man in her bed.

Letterkenny court.

Letterkenny court.

Shane Cullen, 23, called to the home of Aishling Kirwin at Glendale Manor at 3.30am on October 9th last year.

He had been out drinking and was extremely intoxicated.

Cullen, of 17 Glendale Manor, had earlier passed Ms Kirwin’s house and spotted her ex-boyfriend’s car outside.

He arrived at the house and demanded to be allowed in.

He kicked the door in and climbed the stairs and confronted Ms Kirwin asking who was in her bed with her.

She denied there was anybody in the bed but he then spat in her face.

Solicitor for Cullen, Kieran Dillon, said there was a large amount of alcohol consumed by the accused and he was deeply sorry for what had happened.

“He is very sorry for what happened but there was a large amount of alcohol consumed and the situation he had seen earlier had been festering with him,” said Mr Dillon.

He said the couple were back in a relationship and now had a child together.

There was a total of €1,124 worth of damage caused and Cullen had €400 in court to pay as part of that compensation.

“They have weathered the storm and are together and focusing on the future,” added Mr Dillon.

Judge Paul Kelly adjourned the case for a probation report until September.

GUILTY: FORMER DONEGAL COUNCILLOR ‘RECKLESSLY’ BREACHED ETHICS WITH DOUBLE EXPENSES CLAIM

$

35x45mm1-233x300A DONEGAL politician who lost his seat in the council elections has been censured today for making double expenses claims.

The Standards in Public Office Commission (SIPO) has today published its investigation report about alleged contraventions of the Ethical Framework for the Local Government Service (Part 15 of the Local Government Act 2001) and the Ethics in Public Office Acts 1995 and 2001 by former Councillor Pádraig Doherty, Donegal County Council.

The report follows an investigation hearing held on 12 May 2014.

The Standards Commission found that Mr Doherty contravened sections 168 and 169(3) of the Local Government Act 2001, acted in disregard of provisions of the Code of Conduct for Councillors and did a ‘specified act’ within the meaning of the Standards in Public Office Act 2001 by claiming travelling expenses from Údarás na Gaeltachta in respect of his attendance at the Association of County and City Councils’ Annual Conference 2007 at The Park Hotel, Dungarvan, County Waterford on 8, 9 and 10 March 2007 and later also claiming travelling and subsistence expenses in respect of attendance at the same Conference from Donegal County Council.

The Standards Commission also found that Mr Doherty contravened sections 168 and 169(3) of the Local Government Act 2001, acted in disregard of provisions of the Code of Conduct for Councillors and did a ‘specified act’ within the meaning of the Standards in Public Office Act 2001 by claiming travelling expenses from Donegal County Council in respect of his attendance at the Irish Central Border Area Network Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk, County Louth on 20 November 2008 and later also claiming travelling and subsistence expenses in respect of attendance at a meeting of Údarás na Gaeltachta in Furbo, County Galway on 21 November 2008.

The Commission found that Mr Doherty was not entitled to make separate claims for his journeys from home to Dundalk and then from home to Furbo and that he should have made a claim to Donegal County Council for his journey from home to Dundalk and then made a claim to Údarás na Gaeltachta for journeys from Dundalk to Furbo and from Furbo to his home.

The Standards Commission also found that Mr Doherty contravened sections 168 and 169(3) of the Local Government Act 2001, acted in disregard of provisions of the Code of Conduct for Councillors and did a ‘specified act’ within the meaning of the Standards in Public Office Act 2001 by claiming an overnight subsistence allowance from Údarás na Gaeltachta in respect of his attendance at meeting of Údarás na Gaeltachta in Furbo, County Galway on 21 November 2008 when he had not availed of accommodation to justify the claim.

The Standards Commission found that each of the contraventions was committed recklessly and was, in all the circumstances, a serious matter. The Commission also found that Mr Doherty did not act in good faith in relation to each of the contraventions.

The Commission has sent its report to Mr Doherty, to Mr Seamus Neely, Chief Executive, Donegal County Manager and Councillor John Campbell, Mayor, Donegal County Council (whose predecessors made the complaint to the Standards Commission) and also to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform and to the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government.

In his letter to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, the Commission Chairperson, Mr Daniel O’Keeffe, informed him that the Commission is concerned at the scope for abuse by persons making such claims to more than one public body and has requested that he give consideration to putting in place arrangements across the public service for cooperation by public bodies in ensuring that only the appropriate amounts within the relevant regulations are paid in response to claims by persons to more than one body in respect of the same period.

photo1SATURDAY week, June 28, sees seven Donegal Bikers head on fund raising expedition from Malin Head to Mizen Head, in Aid of Dungloe native Sr Mary Sweeney’s School for the Hearing Impaired in Makeni, Sierra Leone.

Sr Mary’s neighbour Declan Quinn along with a number of other Donegal Bikers took up the initiative after many long years of hearing of the selfless work Sr Mary carriers out in caring for the children of Sierra Leone.

Declan told Donegal Daily: “On Saturday next a number of bikers from across Donegal are beginning the journey from Malin Head to Mizen Head on a Motor-Cycle fund raising trip to raise funds for Sr Mary’s School in Africa.

“Over many years we in the Rosses have heard of the selfless work sister Mary carries out and we are extremely proud to call her one of our own.

“I have met with people who have visited the area and the stories are truly inspiring. Sr Mary has 220 hearing impaired children attend her school, she is aiming to make the school self sufficient in growing their own food on a farm within school grounds, we hope that the fund-raising effort of this motorcycle tour will go some way to help on her endeavours. All funds raised will go directly to Sr Mary, and every penny will be spent in helping the children in her care.”

Donation cards are available in most shops locally, or people can donate directly to the school-fund through the details below

Members of Carndonagh Boxing Club.

A well-known boxing club may now be unable to move into its new clubhouse after vandals caused up to €3,000 of damage.

Windows were smashed and doors kicked in during the attack at Carndonagh Boxing Club on Sunday night last.

The premises, at Barrack Hill, has been a labour of love for workers at the club with a total of €150,000 already spent on the building.

John Lynch, a committee member of Carndonagh ABC, told Donegal Daily that they are disgusted by the attack.1363038614

“We have rented a premises for the past 30 years at Chapel Street and this was our dream building.

“All the money was raised through fundraising and now these vandals come along and attack the building for no reason other than thuggery.

“We are very annoyed and we don’t know when we will be able to move into the premises now,” he said.

The club, which has up to 60 members, boasts a number of All-Ireland champions.

John added “The aim of the club has always been to give kids some direction in their lives.

“Now other kids have come along and done this. It’s just so frustrating and we don’t have the money to carry out these repairs at the moment.”

POACHING CRACKDOWN: JUDGE ORDERS DESTRUCTION OF 143 ILLEGAL FISHING NETS AND 11 BOATS

fishing netsA JUDGE has ordered the destruction of a series of items used by Donegal poachers.

Judge Paul Kelly made the order after an application by the cross-Border Loughs Agency.

Conservation officer John McCartney said the haul amounted to items seized on the Donegal side of the Border in 2013.

The Loughs Agency has to apply to the court for destruction orders on items which it seizes in the line of duty.

The application before Letterkenny District Court was for 143 illegal nets, 11 boats, 3 fishing rods, 3 eel traps, 4 fixed blade knives and other assorted items.

All of these items were seized by Fishery Officers in Donegal in cases where people were illegally fishing made off leaving them behind, Mr McCartney told Judge Paul Kelly.

“In the case of nets, given the low salmon numbers particularly in the River Finn, fishery officers will seize a net to prevent fish getting trapped rather than wait for the poachers to return to collect it,” he said.

“This was of particular concern last year when we had a period of low water and high temperature conditions.”
