The ESB is reminding people that swimming is not allowed in any of its reservoirs – including one in Co Donegal.esb-logo

In a statement, the electricity supplier said its reservoirs are deep and fast flowing with uneven ground making them extremely dangerous for swimming.

They include the reservoir in Assaroe in Ballyshannon.

The warning is being made as a result of the current spell of warm weather.

CHILDREN TO BE ISSUED WITH ID BANDS TO PREVENT REPEAT OF ROSSNOWLAGH SEARCH

10468065_745608252149679_6527712000044833077_nCOAST Guard staff and volunteers are to issue children with plastic ID bands in a bid to prevent the repeat of the chaos on Rossnowlagh beach last year.

A child went missing on the famous strand amid fears he was in the water during last July’s heat wave.

Thousands of people in their cars caused gridlock on the beach when they all tried to leave at the same time as the tide came in.

The Sligo 118 rescue helicopter and lifeboat crews were forced to scramble to the beach in an attempt to find the child who later turned up safe and well.

“With the beach weather hopefully sticking around for a while Irish Coast Guard units around the country have started distributing wristbands for children under the “Give us a hand” campaign,” said Dara O’Malley-Daly from Malin Head Coast Guard station.

“The wristbands which are disposable allow parents/ guardians to write their phone number on it and place on a child’s hand.

“If the child gets lost the phone number can be contacted and everyone reunited quickly, minimising the need for a large scale search and undue concern for parents. The wristbands are free and made of Tyvek material which is durable and waterproof.

“Coast Guard units around the country are distributing the wristbands at coastal/ inland waterway locations. They are also making them available for collection at lifeguard stations and public buildings like libraries.”

Gardai found a man sipping a can of beer after the car in which he was a passenger crashed after a high-speed chase.

Letterkenny court.

The car crashed into a telegraph pole after it has reached speeds in excess of 140kph outside Letterkenny.

Garda Sean McDaid told Letterkenny District Court he went to investigate reports of two men who were stealing diesel from cars at Ballymacool Woods.

When they went to investigate they came across Tommy Connors driving past them.

They followed him and when they activated their sirens and flashing lights he increased his speed in excess of 140kmh on narrow roads.

The car was going that fast that sparks were coming from it when it hit bumps on the road, the court heard.

“He took a number of corners blind and if anything was coming the other way there would have ben a head-on collision,” said Garda McDaid.

The Gardai eventually lost the Volkswagen Passat car they were pursuing but then noticed a telegraph pole in the middle of a road and the car crashed into a ditch.

“We ran up to the crashed car and the driver’s door was open. Danny Connors was in the passenger seat sipping a can of beer with both airbags deployed. We searched the area but couldn’t find Tommy Connors.

Tommy Connors, 31, of Canal Road, Letterkenny, denied being the driver of the car on March 2nd, last year.

He gave evidence that he had never driven in his life and that he was on disability benefit as he suffered from depression.

However Judge Paul Kelly said he was satisfied from the Garda evidence that Connors was driving the car.

Connors was charged with driving without insurance, dangerous driving, having no insurance and being involve din a hit and run at Kirkstown, Letterkenny.

Garda Inspector David Kelly revealed the accused had 23 previous convictions including one for the unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.

Judge Paul Kelly ordered a probation report on Tommy Connors and adjourned the case until September 15th.

Oisin at work at the Villa Rose…go along and support him and his family on Wednesday night

THE people of the Twin Towns and across Donegal have been helping to support Oisin Merritt and his family since Oisin’s tragic fall in Mallorca.

Now colleagues and friends at Villa Rose Hotel where Oisin works are coming together tomorrow evening (Wednesday) for a special fundraiser to help the Merritt family.

And they’d like as many of you as possible to turn up.

The Finn Harps reserve player is being treated in hospital since his fall in Santa Ponsa.

Oisin is pictured behind the bar whilst recently fundraising himself for RELAY FOR LIFE, a reflection of his kind hearted nature – let’s get together as a community and show our support for Oisin.

So here’s how you can help in this message from staff at the Villa Rose:

As you might know Oisin Merritt is a member of our bar staff here at the Villa Rose Hotel and as such we are holding a Soccer Quiz fundraiser to support him & his family to help with the costs being incurred at this difficult time.

We are holding it here in the Forge Bar at the Villa Rose Hotel tomorrow night (Wednesday).

We know that the event will be greatly supported by our tight knit team of staff and Oisin is so well known and well liked within the hotel but the more support the better. We’d be very grateful to Donegal Daily readers if they could spread the word and come along.

Details: Villa Rose Soccer Quiz this Wednesday Night in support of our good friend & co-worker Oisin Merritt & his family. All money raised will go directly to Oisin. Starting @9.30pm.

Entry €50 Per Team (teams of 4).

fog donegaldailyCOASTAL areas of Donegal – and many inland – experienced a ‘blue fog’ at the end of another stunning day in the county.

The cold air flow affected many areas in the north of the county, rolling inland from Lough Swilly and covering many towns and villages including Letterkenny at one stage before dusk.

The fog will linger overnight prompting a warning from Gardaí to motorists to take care – use fog lights if you are out and about.

DDTV: Gerry Collins, the former smoker who, along with his family, has led this year’s QUIT campaign has inspired thousands of Donegal people to stop smoking.

Gerry sadly passed away in March and as part of his and his family’s final contribution to the QUIT campaign, we are publishing a new short film called Gerry’s Story – a short film about family, loss and gratitude.

The film is a final summation of Gerry’s message for smokers and for everyone.

It includes many of the moments and messages that we’ve seen in his three TV ads, but allows for a more detailed and deeper picture of himself, his circle of friends and family life, the thoughts of his loved ones, how it was for all of them to be part of the campaign, and their shared experience of his smoking, his illness and his final months.

DDTV – DONEGAL’S BEO GETS NATIONWIDE SUPPORT FROM IMRO

Donegal’s homegrown music project BEO is growing from strength to strength.

The project, which sees students organise and promote their own rocks gigs, has been given a major thumbs up form the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO).

BEO met with IMRO CEO Keith Johnson at his offices in Dublin and the music industry boss says that the project now needs a nationa media presence.

“By the end of the meeting we had devised a plan to promote Comórtas BEO, led by Paddy Mc Kenna across the RTE network from talk-shows to breakfast shows and including an ambitious plan to feature on The Late Late,” revealed a spokesman for BEO.

IMRO are also going to fund this Media drive.

“This is very good news in all ways as it further cements the credibility of BEO publicly and allows us now to chase other commercial sponsors. If you feel you know of any company in a position to support please send them our way,” added the BEO spokesman.

On asking Keith what was it that brought BEO to IMRO’s attention he credited Aodh Mac Giolla Chearra and Shannon Bheir from Colaiste Ailigh for a very energetic and passionate presentation at HWCH in October 2013.

“This now brings our project to a new level a level where we will all need to work together to ensure we steer BEO in the right direction.”

DONEGAL FOOTBALLERS GET BEHIND ROAD SAFETY MESSAGE

Official-Launch-300x205-1WITH thousands of fans heading for Clones and Lisnaskea this Sunday to watch the minors, seniors and senior ladies play Ulster Championship semi-finals, Donegal’s players have helped launch a safer driving campaign.

The County Health & Wellbeing Committee of CLG Dhún na nGall and the Donegal Road Safety Working Group have launched a campaign to encourage all road users to change their behavior and make these changes part of their lives in the future, which will save lives and reduce serious injuries on our roads.

The message is simple – make smart choices about how you use the roads, never ever drink or drug drive, strictly keep to the speed limits and reduce your speed, make sure you and your passengers are wearing seatbelts before you set off on a journey, no matter how short and never use your mobile phone for any purpose while driving.

The campaign asks motorists and passengers to make a personal commitment to drive responsibly and a special appeal is being made to all Donegal supporters traveling to this Sunday’s Ulster semi-final in Clones against Antrim and any subsequent games to drive with care.

On the road as on the pitch you need to be alert. The campaign is fully backed by Donegal GAA and Donegal Road Safety Working Group with Donegal Senior Team Player, Ryan Mc Hugh as its Ambassador.

Footballers and management will be encouraging people to make their pledge to decide every time they sit in a vehicle before they turn the key, that they will make smart choices about how they use the roads. The hope is that everyone takes note and thinks road safety when using the roads.

This Road Safety campaign for the football season is being co-ordinated by Brian O’Donnell, Road Safety Officer, Donegal County Council and Sean Dunnion, County Chairman, Donegal GAA as part of their road safety education and casualty reduction strategy.

“This is another opportunity to remind football fans about their road safety responsibilities Fans should ensure the enjoyment of the game isn’t followed by tragedy on the roads,” said Brian O’Donnell.

“Individuals and organisations should follow their football team’s example and make a commitment to support this campaign and ask all their family members to adhere to the rules of the road at all times and lead by example. It is also important to factor in a rest break on your journey from Donegal to the game.”

Sean Dunnion, County Chairman said: “The new County Health & Wellbeing Committee formed earlier this year immediately identified that Road Safety should be a focus area for their plan for 2014 so we are delighted now to partner with the Donegal Road Safety Working Group in delivering a campaign for our members and supporters as they travel to venues across Ulster and indeed hopefully outside the province later in the season as they support the Donegal Minor and Senior football teams.”

Ryan Mc Hugh said: “It was a great honour for him to be selected as the Donegal GAA Road Safety Ambassador and looked forward to working with both the County Health & Wellbeing Committee and the Donegal Road Safety Working Group in promoting a safe driving culture for both young and older drivers.”

He also appealed to everybody, both drivers and passengers, to heed the many safe driving messages that will be delivered particularly over social media channels in the coming months.

Donegal’s minors taken on Antrim in Clones from 12.15pm this Sunday, with the senior game to follow at 2pm.

Donegal’s Ladies play Armagh at 5pm in Lisnaskea.

The Department of Education and Skills issued the update after the second meeting of the Primary Staffing Appeals Board in relation to the staffing levels of primary schools for the 2014/15 school year.

Deputy Joe McHugh said he welcomed the announcement.

“ The challenges facing small schools are an issue I have been raising continuously, calling for the Department to acknowledge that small schools in rural areas are facing different challenges from those in heavily populated areas and their unique positions need to be taken into consideration,” he said.

St Eunan’s Club players and members who organised a fun penalty kick competition at Letterkenny Shopping Centre of Sunday

ST Eunan’s GAA club news: The Senior footballers suffered another league defeat last Sunday away to Gaoth Dobhair. They have no game this week. The Reserve game was postponed and refixed for Friday, July 4th.

The Junior men had a narrow victory away to Glenfin last week and they are away this Saturday evening to Sean MacCumhaills, throw-in is at 7:30pm.

The Senior Hurlers have two midweek games in the Táin league in the next week, first up is the rescheduled game v Ballela that takes place this Wednesday (18th) in Garvaghey at 8pm. Next Wed. (25th) they make the short journey to play The Shamrocks.

Best of luck to all our players on the Donegal Senior and Minor teams that will attempt to reach the Ulster Final this Sunday in Clones v Antrim. On Sunday evening the Donegal Senior Ladies will also attempt to reach the Ulster Final when they take on Armagh in Lisnaskea at 5pm, Rose Boyle, Kaneshia McKinney and Lauren O’Connell represent us on that squad. You may be able to stop in on the way back from Clones to support the girls.

The National Hurling Féile is on this weekend in O’Donnell Park. 8 Teams from across Ireland will be playing in what will be a truly memorable event. Please come to the park on Saturday from 11am to support our boys, and to witness excellent hurling. The St Eunan’s Féile committee would like to thank everyone who have so generously supported the club in our preparations for the Féile this year. We could not do this without your help and financial support.

The Minor boy’s footballers begin their Championship campaign with an away game v Letterkenny Gaels next Wednesday evening (25th) in the new round robin format with a 7:30pm throw-in.

The U16 Boys footballers get back to league action after a break for the exams next Tuesday (24th). The A team travel to Gaoth Dobhair with the Development team having a bye week.

The U14 Boys footballers bowed out of this year’s championship last week after losing to MacCumhaills. Unfortunately that ends their season. This is something that will have to be looked at as these players are simply not getting enough football over a long enough period in the calendar year.

The U14 girl’s footballers will meet Termon in the Co. Div. 1 semi-final next Tuesday (24th) with neutral venue to be confirmed. Training on Thursday from 4.45pm to 6pm.

The U12 boy’s footballers make the short trip to Glenswilly on Monday evening (24th) for Go Games.

The U9 (born in 2005) Footballers make the short trip to Glenswilly this Saturday morning for Go Games (coaches are Cathal Doherty, Peter Curran, Declan O’Donnell and Bernard Doherty). Players are asked to be in Glenswilly for 10:45am SHARP for 11am start.

A Donegal woman was on cloud nine after her boyfriend proposed to her on a hot air balloon trip.hot_air_balloon

Romantic Troy Devaney made the most of the good weather to whisk Eloise Gillespie up in the air of Trim in Co Meath.

She thought it was simply a lovely birthday present as they took off.

But Eloise, 38, didn’t realise that classical guitarist Troy was planning to ask her to marry him.

When the couple were airborne Troy, 42, suddenly turned around to Eloise and proposed.

A stunned Eloise said yes to her long-term partner.

“I really had no clue. I initially thought he was going to bring me golfing,” she laughed.

Members of the Economic Security Subgroup of the Childrens Services Committee who commissioned report Profiling Challenges in the Education Sector in Donegal. L to R: Anne McAteer, HSE, Peter Walker HSE, Rosemary Lyons, Inishowen Development Partnership, Lorraine Thompson Donegal Youth Service, Genieveve Gavin DLDC, Liam Ward Donegal County Council, Mary McBride Donegal County Council and Loretta McNicholas Donegal County Council.

“Profiling Challenges to the Education Sector in Donegal in 2012” , a report produced by the Economic Security Sub-group of the Children’s Services Committee is being launched today by Mr. Paul Hannigan, President LYIT.

Following a series of budget reductions in the Education sector the Economic Security Sub-group commissioned research to establish their impact in Donegal.

This research was carried out by the Research and Policy Unit in Donegal County Council and funded by Councils Social Inclusion Unit.

The Report highlights that while the reductions have been applied in a uniform manner across the country their impact is more severe where high levels of deprivation previously existed and it is widely acknowledged that Donegal has, for many years, experienced some of the highest levels of deprivation and poverty in the state.

Speaking before the launch Mr. Liam Ward, Chair of the Economic Security Sub-group commented on the strong correlation between high levels of deprivation and education attainment.

“By creating further challenges to disadvantaged families in terms of access to educational opportunities and thus limiting careers choice, the potential for unemployment and poverty traps are increased and the social fabric that builds families is undermined. The implications of reducing resources needs to be recognised and addressed to prevent any further erosion of the skills and knowledge base within Donegal.”

Principals, students, parents and a range of professionals were consulted as part of this research and the findings highlight the importance of support services to school including the Education Welfare Officer and the Education Psychologist. Teaching staff value these highly and the report calls for additional funding for these services.

Students identified the critical role of Special Needs Assistants in the classroom as well as Learning Support and Resource teachers in supporting children and young people with additional needs.

Issues for parents include the cost of books and voluntary contributions and confusion around the School Transport Scheme.

The Donegal Children’s Services Committee comprises a range of organisations and agencies whose remit is to engage in joint planning and coordination of services for children and young people in the county. Its purpose is to secure better developmental outcomes for children and young people and two of the five outcomes set nationally are that children will be supported in active learning and that they will be economically secure. The recommendations from this research report will inform the Children and Young People’s Action Plan currently being developed by the Children’s Services Committee.

The Report can be accessed on line at:

*U12s*

The U12s played at home to Termon on Monday night and found it very tough against a very well drilled team. Next up is an away game to St Michaels next Monday.

*U8s*

Our Under 8′s travelled to Letterkenny Gaels on Saturday for a very enjoyable Blitz. We beat the host team easily in our 1st match with excellent displays from Dara Sheridan, Aaron Burns and Ryan McElhinney. In our 2nd match we won a very close encounter over Downings with Rory O’Brien, Dabhaid Lynch and Joseph Barrett excelling with some great long range scores. Our final match was agains…t a very strong Gweedore side and we lost narrowly after a very entertaining match. Best for CLG BnaG were Jason McAteer, Conor Coffey and Conor Houston. U14 Ladies Bundoran win Co Final Section D:

BUNDORAN 6-11

CONVOY 3-05

Last night, Bundoran Ladies brought back the first ever u14 Ladies Title to the town after a tough encounter against Convoy played in Donegal Town. The score line doesn’t reflect fairly to the competitive edge that Convoy added to the game.

Bundoran had a dream start when dual Captain Rhona McEniff powering home the first goal in the first minute. Convoy struggled to get out of their own half with all of the pressure imposed on them by the sea siders. As a result, Aoife Corbett had Bundoran’s second goal in the net soon after.

Convoy’s game plan seemed to be to kick the long ball into full forward Shauna Ward. This paid off midway in the first half when they scored their first point.

Now it was Bundoran backs that were under pressure with Convoy pulling back two goals. At half time Bundoran led 4-03 to 2-01.

Second half Bundoran’s Megan McEniff scored a point immediately. It was clear that Bundoran had raised the tempo with Convoy looking more tired in the scorching June sunshine.

Backs Yasmin McKee and Dual Captain Rachel McGee were getting forward more with Abi Barrett kicking frees and points for fun. Maria McLaughlan’s introduction added even more energy to the attack.

The final score line would make you believe that this game was never Bundoran’s to lose, but Convoy always looked dangerous and were guilty of missing numerous goal chances that if scored may have led to an exciting finale.

In the end the referee blew the final whistle and captains Rhona McEniff and Rachel McGee were presented the plaque and thanked Convoy, Referee, coaches etc.

On arrival back to Bundoran, the plaque was paraded thought the town by the winning team, proud parents and supporters.

Every player was superb on the night.
