Enda McLaughlin, was killed by a car in Germany as he fled across a road on Monday after stabbing three people.

The 27 year old Carndonagh man, who had mental health issues and a string of previous convictions, moved to Holland recently after being released from Castlerea Prison where he was serving a two year sentence for assault.

However his family have been told that it will cost thousands of euro to fly his remains home to be buried in his native Carndonagh.

The family said they simply do not have the money but do not want Enda cremated.

His heartbroken father Patrick said they are now hopeful that the Irish Government will step in and help fly his son’s remains home.

“We were told it would cost a lot of money and we simply do not have it.

“But the one thing I do not want is for Enda to be cremated. I want to be able to bury my son in Carndonagh graveyard and to be able to visit his grave.

“I am not a hugely religious man but I need to be able to visit home and feel that he is close to us. That is all we want,” he said.

The family are being helped by local Fianna Fail TD Charlie McConalogue who is also from Carndonagh.

Mr McLaughlin said he hopes to have his son’s remains home next week from Germany and to give him a proper burial.

“Charlie McConalogue and our solicitor have been very helpful and I am hopeful we can have Enda’s remains home next week so we can bury him,” he said.

Mr McLaughlin, from the townland of Glentogher, two miles outside Carndonagh, said he has been touched by people’s kindness to his family.

“I have been very touched by the number of people who contacted us to say they knew End and not one of those who phoned us had a bad word about him.

“Yes, he had his troubles but deep down, he was a good lad who was let down by the health system.

“He had mental health issues and he just didn’t get the help he needed from an early age,” he added.

COLEMAN SIGNS ‘SWEET’ FIVE YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH THE TOFFEES

Coleman 1Seamus Coleman has signed a lucrative five-year contract extension at Everton.

Coleman enjoyed a stunning season for the Merseyside club last year.

His outstanding and consistent performances earned Coleman a place on the PFA team of the year.

Sky Sports analysts Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville said Coleman was the best right-back in the Premier League last season.

Coleman was also awarded with the Everton fans player-of-the-year award and was given the same accolade by his colleagues.

Speculation had linked Coleman with summer moves away from Goodison Park.

Arsenal and Manchester United had expressed interest in Coleman, but Everton boss Roberto Martinez insisted Coleman would be going nowhere, and said he would be rewarded with a new contract.

It is believed that Coleman will earn up to £40,000 per-week as part of the bumper contract.

Coleman has also become a key player for the Irish international side and has been touted as a future Irish captain.

Coleman has captained the Irish senior side once, in a fixture against Wales last season.

MINISTER RING ANNOUNCES €200K FOR MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAMS

$

DMRTA special one-off grant of €200,000 for Mountain Rescue Ireland to purchase new vehicles and equipment has been announced by Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar & Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring.

The Ministers made the announcement in Dáil Éireann and went on to meet with officials from Mountain Rescue Ireland in Government Buildings.

“Mountain rescue teams play a hugely important role in supporting trekkers and mountaineers. Hill walking and adventure sports are getting more popular by the year, and play an increasingly important role in tourism.

“The various mountain rescue teams work closely with the Irish Coast Guard and the Gardaí on rescue operations. My Department has stabilised current funding for mountain rescue since the general election, providing €363,000 for day to day operations since then. But having met Mountain Rescue Ireland earlier this year, and discussed ongoing issues with equipment and vehicles, we also decided to provide a special once-off sports capital allocation of €200,000. This grant will be used for new vehicles and equipment with the precise details to be arranged between my officials and Mountain Rescue Ireland.”

Minister Ring added: “As a West of Ireland Minister I am very familiar with the excellent work done by mountain rescue teams. I want to pay tribute to the heroism of these brave men and women who go out in all conditions, throughout the year. We have some of the harshest weather in the West of Ireland, and we feel the full force of the Atlantic storms. I’m delighted that we could make this special allocation and I look forward to building on this close relationship with Mountain Rescue Ireland.”

Separately, Minister Varadkar said he plans to hold discussions with Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald about improving current oversight arrangements. Under Ireland’s Framework for Emergency Management, mountain rescue teams fall under the remit of the Department of Justice & Equality and are coordinated and tasked by the Gardaí. However, the Department of Transport administers the grant scheme, while the Coast Guard chairs the National Coordinating Committee for Mountain & Cave Rescue.

Minister Varadkar said: “We need greater clarity concerning which Department is responsible for funding and supporting mountain rescue teams. I intend to discuss this matter with my colleague Minister Fitzgerald and provide a better arrangement for mountain rescue.”

DONEGAL FAMILY GETS EXTRA RESOURCE HOURS FOR THEIR CHILD IN HIGH COURT BATTLE

A Donegal family is one of two who have taken a High Court challenge over resource hours for their children who have special needs.gavel1

The two families, whose children are Down Syndrome, have been successful in getting more than four extra hours for their children each week.

The extra hours were granted by President of the High Court, Justice Nicholas Kearns.

Speaking after the case, Sinn Fein’s Pearse Doherty said he was very happy for both families.

“I am delighted that the parents have been successful in the High Court challenge and that the maximum resource hours have been allocated to the children at the centre of this case.

“Today’s outcome is a vindication of the long campaign that the parents have fought to ensure that their children receive the appropriate resource hour allocation. I commend them on their tireless campaign and on their victory today.

“It is also an indictment of the Government’s approach to this issue and I look forward to the day when parents of children with Down Syndrome or other conditions no longer have to battle with the state in order to ensure that their children’s needs are recognised and appropriate supports put in place.”

GAA BALLThe Division Three clash between league leaders Aodh Ruadh and Milford has been brought forward to Friday evening at 7.30pm.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday evening, but both clubs have agreed to switch the fixture to this evening.

That game will be preceded by the reserves at 6pm.

Aodh Ruadh under 12s hosted Ardara in our fourth league game in Father Tierney Park on Tuesday evening.

In our first game we got off to a good start with Harry Howarth hitting the onion bag early on, three points followed from Mark McGlynn with all the lads playing well.

Senan Rooney struck over two great 45s and a point from play before Cian Rooney stepped up and hit the back of the net.

In the second half though Ardara came back strong hitting two goals and a point without reply.

The lads rallied with Mark McGlynn hitting a goal and Cian Rooney, Harry Howarth and Senan Rooney hitting a point a piece.

The game finished 3-8 to 2-6 in a hard fought battle. In goals Bridín Maguire was in total charge with Kyle Murray and Matt Gillespie in very good form in the full back line.

Eugene Doherty marshaled the half back line and Philip Cassidy worked tirelessly in midfield.

Up front Calum Ayres and Daire Gallagher played very well linking up with their midfield and other forwards.

In our second game we started with a strong line out, Shane Whelan back from injury played a great game in goals.

In the full back line David Doherty and Adam Hoey were very solid.

In the half back line Nathan Owens-Kelly, Daire Warren and Conal Bradshaw were excellent closing down all attacks.

In midfield Kyle McCaffrey and Shane Duffy dominated play, linking up with their forwards.

Up front Frankie McGinley took a great goal and was unlucky not to get a second, Mitch McLaughlin hit a fine goal too while Jake Foley and Diarmaid Dolan put in a great shift taking some good scores also.

There was further good news for the under 12s with Kernan’s Spar coming on board as jersey sponsor for the team.

Pictured at the official presentation of the jerseys to the club are under 12 team manager Martin McGlynn and David O’Donnell who is an under 12 mentor and manager of Kernan’s Spar Ballyshannon.

A tiny two-teacher Donegal school has won its battle for survival after launching its own bus service.

Trentagh National School, just ten minutes outside Letterkenny, was threatened with the loss of one of its teachers because it did not have enough pupils.

The school, which has a proud history of education, was warned by the Department of Education that it faced sanctions if numbers fell.

In line with Department policy, the school was told that it must have a minimum of 19 pupils but feared they might have just fallen short of that number.

So the school’s Board of Management and principal Ms Norma Summers decided to hire a bus in order to attract pupils from the surrounding areas.

And now the plan has paid off after the school attracted enough numbers to cover two teachers for next year’s school year which starts in September.

Principal Ms Summers told Donegal Daily that the gamble has paid off.

“We are so delighted to be able to reveal that we have achieved our numbers for September

“Not only that but we have had quite a few enquiries from new families who will be sending their children in the next few years,” she said.

Cllr Ciaran Brogan, who has also campaigned to keep the school open, said he was delighted by the news.

“Trentagh National School has a wonderful history of education and they have two hugely dedicated teachers supported by a very strong Board of Manageemnt.

“I am delighted that common sense has prevailed and I hope the school continues to flourish for many years,” he said.

Local businesswoman Karen McGlinchey told the Shaun Doherty Show on Highland Radio that a local businessman found the girl at the bus station after she had fled the house.

FORMER FINN HARPS STAR SET TO BECOME A WILD ROVER

Former Harps star James Doherty is set for a move back to the USL.

Former Harps star James Doherty is set for a move back to the USL.

Former Finn Harps star James Doherty is reportedly mulling over offers from both Swilly Rovers and Letterkenny Rovers as he looks to get back playing following his departure from Finn Park.

Doherty ended a eight-year association with the Ballybofey club when he departed last month.

Doherty decided to leave Harps because he was unable to commit to the demands required to play LOI football.

Doherty played 116 times for the club and made his debut against the now defunct Kilkenny City in 2006.

He had a brief spell with Irish League side Newry Town in 2008.

Newly-promoted Institute FC and Dungannon Swifts have expressed an interest in acquiring the signature of Doherty, but it is believed the Kilmacrennan native is keen to secure a move to the USL in order to also be able to play Gaelic with Termon.

Both Swilly Rovers and Letterkenny Rovers have made their interest known to Doherty and are keen to get the former Harps man to sign for them.

Letterkenny Rovers have a whole host of former Harps players in their ranks and are favourites to land his signature, but Swilly manager Jason Gibson will be hoping he can convince Doherty otherwise.

Joe McHugh TD

The School Building Unit from the Department of Education and Skills confirmed that St Joseph’s National School, Rathdonnell has been successful in its funding application for Additional Accommodation for an additional classroom.

And under the Emergency Works Scheme, SN Naomh Colmcille was successful in their funding request for Health and Safety requirements.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Deputy McHugh highlighted “the hard work that schools do on a daily basis in order to maintain a high standard and the best learning environment for students and I welcome today’s announcement that St Joseph’s National School has been successful in their application.

“I also welcome confirmation that SN Naomh Colmcille were successful under the Emergency Works Scheme. This funding will allow key health and safety work to be carried out at the school and with the Department receiving so many similar requests, with a limited budget available, I commend the schools on all their hard work.”

“Last week, the Department of Education and Skills confirmed that Cashel National School, Fanad, has been successful in their application for much needed funding to repair the building’s roof through the Emergency Works Scheme.

“While these successful applications for funding are a welcomed result, there are still many challenges facing schools in Donegal, especially small schools. There was very positive news last week that both Gartan and Glenmaquin National School were successful in their appeal to retain a teacher but many others are facing similar situations and I will continue to work with principals, board of management’s and teachers in highlighting at a Government level the impact that losing a teacher can have, not just on the school and the students but on communities as well.”

Are you fed up wearing Dentures? Have unsightly gaps in your smile? Then restore your smile with Dental Implants at Ready Steady Smiles.

Ready Steady Smiles is a progressive dental practice offering Dental Implant therapy in Donegal.

Our Implant team are highly experienced and includes one of the UK’s leading implant surgeons; Dr Richard Brookshaw.

Dr Brookshaw is arguably one of the best surgeons in this field.

Firmly fixed and integrated into healthy gum and bone, dental implants are the modern solution for replacing missing teeth; improving appearance and oral health.

The implants are painlessly placed in the gum where the natural tooth root would have been, providing a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth.

Unlike other traditional options like dental bridges, the adjacent teeth are not affected.

Timing is everything….

Once a tooth is lost, the sooner an implant is placed the better.

When a tooth is lost the surrounding bone begins to diminish.

Therefore timing is important.

Early intervention is best in order to achieve the best possible outcome.

Dental Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or even a full arch.

Talk to us today to arrange a consultation to determine your suitability for implant treatment.

All treatment, from initial consultation through to completion is carried out in our state of the art surgeries in Donegal.

Treatment is straight forward and highly successful and offers predictable results.

We offer conscious sedation for nervous patients.

Talk, eat & smile with confidence.

Call 1890 265 365 / 074 97 21508 / 074 91 90029 to book a consultation.

Or email info@readysteadysmiles.com

Dr. Joseph Bonner has been the principal dentist at the practice since he took it over in 1995.

Since then the practice has grown significantly into a first class treatment facility.

BurglarsCOMMUNITY ALERT: At least two gangs of travelling burglars are operating again in Co Donegal after daylight raids today.

A woman had her home ransacked by thieves in Ballyarr, 2kms from Ramelton, shortly after 9am while she was in the town.

A neighbour raised the alarm after spotting one of the thieves exiting the house via a window. Money and a number of personal items were taken.

The incident in Ballyarr is a few hundreds metres from woods where a teenage girl was punched by a hooded man three weeks ago.

A car registration and make was taken and passed to Gardaí.

Around an hour later two homes in Castlefinn were targeted.

Again they were broken into and items of jewellery and money was taken.

Gardaí are once again appealing to home and business owners to step up security around their properties.

HARPS WORK HARD TO GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Perfect conditions at Finn Park resulted in a perfect scoreline for Finn Harps as they beat Waterford to snatch a much-needed 1-0 win.

Harps striker Ruairi Keating scored the all important goal for Harps. Pic by Gary Foy.

Harps striker Ruairi Keating scored the all important goal for Harps. Pic by Gary Foy.

Harps were always on top in this game which saw a troubled Waterford side threaten only on a rare occasion in each half.

The teams went in scoreless at half-time but the combination of Kevin McHugh, Ruairi Keating supported by Mickey Funston always looked threatening.

It was Keating who snatched the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute when he raced through to slot past the visiting goalkeeper Burns.

McHugh and sub Sean McCarron should have added to the Harps tally.

Ollie Horgan will be happy with the three points against a disjointed Waterford team who lacks ideas in the last third of the pitch.
