‘MY SON WAS A GOOD AND DECENT YOUNG MAN WHO NEVER GOT HELP’– DAD OF McLAUGHLIN

enda mclaughlinTHE father of a Co Donegal man knocked down and killed in Germany after stabbing three people claimed today that his son had been let down by the health system here.

Enda McLaughlin, who was 27 and from Carndonagh,

McLaughlin hailed a cab in Holland and asked to be driven over the border to Germany, where he stabbed the taxi driver in the city of Aachen.

Shortly afterwards, he stabbed another man, before hailing a taxi and asking to be taken to Cologne.

The taxi driver managed to get the man to leave his taxi, which he did on a lay-by, where he stabbed an Estonian truck driver before running onto the motorway, where he was hit by a car and a lorry and killed.

Pat McLaughlin said today: “The mental health system here let him down. Enda was a good and decent young man but he needed help and never really got it.”

The dead man had been working in Germany and was said to be more settled.

But it’s thought he may have begun drinking again before “snapping”.

He had walked free in April from Letterkenny Circuit Court after being found not guilty by a jury for an alleged attack on a woman in Falcarragh.

He had a string of previous convictions including one where he attacked circus workers during a show in Carndonagh in May 2007. He was jailed for 18 months.

His mother Elizabeth, who left him when he was three, died in a fire at her home in December 2010.

Lorcan O’Connor received his award from Patrick McCarney, Customer Relationship Manager, Electric Ireland after his star performance in his team’s win over Antrim in the Electric Ireland Ulster Minor Football Championship.

Donegal minor star Lorcan O’Connor will be hoping he can repeat the stunning performance he produced against Antrim on Sunday in the Ulster decider next month.

O’Connor was in blistering form and was awarded the man-of-the-match award as he and his Donegal team mates blasted past the Antrim challenge and booked their place in the Ulster MFC.

Donegal haven’t contested an Ulster final since 2006, a team which featured current Donegal stars Michael Murphy and Martin McElhinney.

Declan Bonner will be hoping his young charges can take back the Ulster minor crown to Donegal for the first time since 2006.

Donegal have delivered impressive performances over Derry and Antrim en route to the Ulster MFC decider and will be fancied to capture the title.

The Donegal senior side will be attempting to recapture the Ulster title they relinquished last year to Monaghan and Donegal supporters will be dreaming of a ‘dream double’ in Clones on July 20th.

IT WON’T ‘YURT’ YOU TO VISIT DONEGAL’S NEWEST TOURIST DESTINATION

Sean Coll and Helen Haworth who have developed Portsalon Luxury Camping on a beautiful location in Portsalon overlooking Ballymastocker Bay.

Tucked away on a hillside overlooking the spectacular Ballymastocker Bay, Donegal’s newest tourist destination – Portsalon Luxury Camping – is home to the county’s first yurt site and it all came about thanks to a chance meeting at a music festival in England that led to love!

Yurts are wooden framed, canvas-covered structures that originate in Mongolia, but the owners of Portsalon Luxury camping Helen Haworth and Sean Coll, found themselves living in one on their own site in Portsalon a few years ago, and from there the idea of developing the tourist attraction grew.

Helen was brought up in Shrewsbury in England before moving to Leeds but after meeting Sean at a music festival and experiencing the long-distance relationship thing for a while – (because Sean was living in Portsalon), she had to make a choice.Yurt Interior2

“We visited each other every weekend we could manage for a while and quickly decided we would like to be together.

“I loved inner city Leeds with its colourful and crazy characters and the constant buzz of activity but I had been there a long time and along with the vibrancy of the inner city came all of the dark side too.

“I was tiring of it and craving a more peaceful existence.

“Sean was also the main carer for his mother who lives in Portsalon, so when we had to choose between Leeds and Donegal, there was only going to be one winner,” said Helen.

Sean had inherited a site once owned by his granddad that had passed through the family in Portsalon and although he had lived there for a while, he had moved away for a number of years and spent time working in Stoke and London before his return.Yurt Interior1

The house on the site had been left to the elements for a number of years, but when Helen decided to come to live in Donegal they began to think about renovations.

“We initially stayed in a rented property in Letterkenny but wanted to be as close to the site as possible when the work was being done.

However, Sean didn’t want to live in a caravan during the renovation as he had done this as a 10-year old-boy when he arrived in Portsalon from Glasgow.

“I had seen yurts years ago at an environmental centre in Yorkshire and loved them and we had also seen them at festivals.

“So, we decided on a yurt, bought a build your own yurt book on Amazon and went about building our own to stay in during the renovation.Kitchen Lounge

Specialist local carpenter Andrew Gibbons helped Sean and Helen with the wooden frame and Helen sewed the canvas on a small sewing machine to make the first yurt on their fabulous site.

And, it was while living there during the house renovations, that the couple first had ideas about renting it out to make some money after they had finished the renovation.

Those plans soon took on a whole new life.

To sound out the idea at the start, Helen attended a Big Step event hosted by Donegal County Enterprise Board, moved on to a Start your Own Business Course and then took a place on Donegal’s first Discovery Zone programme where she really tested the idea to the limits.

“It was tough and challenging – particularly as throughout the course we were living in a yurt with no electric – no broadband – and no water!

However Donegal County Enterprise Board were amazingly supportive and allowed use of their offices etc.

Discovery Zone left me with a good robust business plan and the presentations mid and end definitely put forward our idea to some important contacts.

The plan to maybe rent out one yurt also became a much bigger and much more viable enterprise than it ever had been.

Among the contacts made at those Discovery Zone presentations were staff members from Donegal Local Development Company.

The project was then funded by DLDC Ltd under the Rural Development (LEADER) Programme 2007-2013 and with that assistance and grant aid – and a lot of perseverance from Helen and Sean – Portsalon Luxury Camping became a reality and already guests have been flocking to the site.

“We’ve had all sorts of setbacks along the way but we just kept going and stuck at it and we now have five luxurious Yurts (four of them constructed by LPM Bohemia) on a breath-taking site.

In keeping with the natural beauty of the surroundings, guests can enjoy fresh salad and herbs in season from the garden and fresh eggs from the hens on the site, but of course there are luxurious amenities as well including brand new toilet and shower facilities, a beautiful new kitchen/lounge for guests and even free wi-fi.

Some of the first guests have hailed from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Canada, Germany, Dublin and Inishowen and the site has received terrific reviews on Tripadvisor.

“People are very interested and they are keen to see something different and unusual doing well in the area.

“To let everyone know what the place is like we are holding an open day on Saturday 28th June from 2pm-5pm so people can call and have a look around some of the Yurts and the site, Sean said.

He added that more information about the site can also be found on their website www.portsalonluxurycamping.com or by finding them on Facebook and Twitter.

Arranmore Lifeboat: Called out todayThe crew of the RNLI Arranmore Lifeboat were called out today at 3.30pm to assist a fisherman involved in an accident on board a 12 meter fishing boat from Greencastle. The accident happened 12 miles N.W off Tory island.

The Coast Guards at Malin Head also alerted the Coast Guard helicopter from Sligo to assist in the evacuation of the injured fisherman who is in his mid 40′s.

Coxswain of the Arranmore Lifeboat, Anton Kavanagh said that the transfer of the casualty went smoothly as the weather was good and the lifeboat had no problems manoeuvring alongside the fishing boat.

The casualty was transferred from his boat to the care of the lifeboat crew and taken to Burtonport where he was transferred to Letterkenny Hospital by ambulance.

This is the 4th time in 5 days that the lifeboat has been called out to render assistance. Two of the calls were medical evacuations from Arranmore who were transferred to Letterkenny Hospital by ambulance.

At the weekend the lifeboat was called to search for a missing swimmer off Portnoo, fortunately the swimmer was located by the Coast Guard helicopter and the lifeboat returned to Arranmore.

JOBS FEARS AS FUEL REMOVED FROM TROUBLED SERVICE STATION

photo 4FEARS are growing for the future of jobs at a troubled Co Donegal garage after thousands of litres of fuel were removed from tanks there tonight.

Two large tankers moved into the Lagg Service Station in Milford and removed 24,000 litres of petrol and diesel.

Local people fear it’s precursor to the closure of the business which was one of several businesses owned by members of the Blaney family placed into administration last month.

Two bars in Letterkenny – The Central and The Brewery – have since been sold on.

Staff at the petrol station and shop were too afraid to speak to Donegal Daily.

But friends say 12 members of staff are “living on their nerves” with worry.

“They all have families and mortgages and another is planning a wedding,” said one friend.

“They’d been told their jobs are safe but tonight it doesn’t feel like that.

“Why else would all the fuel be removed? It’s not looking good at all and the loss of 12 jobs in Milford is the equivalent of 150 jobs in Letterkenny. It’s bad for the town.”

The forecourt, open to midnight every night, is the only one in the town.

The heartbroken father of Enda McLaughlin has revealed how he always thought his son would die in tragic circumstances.

Devastated Patrick McLaughlin choked back tears as he revealed how he will never be able to cope with the loss of his youngest child.

Enda, 27, from Carndonagh in Co Donegal, died after being struck by a car in Germany.

It followed reports of a frenzied attack in which Enda allegedly stabbed three people.

Patrick revealed how he always had a “gut feeling” that his son would die before him.

“If I am to be honest I’ll say that deep down that I always thought Enda would die like this.

“I just never thought he would die in a foreign country where I cannot see him and I cannot hold him. That’s the worst part of all this.

“If this had happened in Cork then I could have went down straight away and been with him.

“I know what everyone is saying but I just need my son home. At the end of the day he is my son, my youngest child and he will always be that to me,” he said.

Speaking at his small cottage two miles outside Carndonagh in the townland of Glentogher, the heartbroken father of five revealed how he only spoke to his son a week ago when he telephoned him from Holland.

“I honestly thought he had left Ireland behind and that he was going to make something of his life.

“Of course he had plenty of troubles here but when he went abroad, I thought he was going to settle down.

“He called me about a week ago and we talked about this and that including the World Cup and who he thought was going to win it. He was in good form.

“He had phoned me at the start of May, the day after he arrived in Holland and said he was okay and that he was settling down,” revealed Patrick.

Patrick said his son was never really given a fair go at an ordinary life after his mother Elizabeth walked out on him and the family from an early age.

“He was never close to his mother because she left us early on.

“I tried the best I could to put clothes on his back and food on the table but it was difficult.

“But he was always up against it. From his early teens he began to get in trouble.

“But the system let him down. He had mental health problems like his mother and he needed help but he didn’t get it.

“We are just ordinary people and Enda fell in with the wrong company,” he said.

Patrick said his son was very talented and was a fine singer.

“He always wanted to be a singer. He was a great singer and blessed with a great voice. I could have listened to him all night.

“Raglan Road was his favourite song and he did a terrific version of it. What I would give to hear him sing it again,” he said.

Patrick said that Enda’s older siblings Daniel, Jonathan, Ellen and Catherine Bernadette are struggling to cope with their brother’s passing and the manner in which he died.

“The first I heard of what happened was when the Guards called to the house.

“We were just told that Enda had been killed a traffic accident but now all this stuff about knifings has come out. It is very hard for a father to hear.

“I spoke to the Gardai and they told me there was no evidence that Enda was involved in any of these things.

“My other children are devastated too but they also felt that something might one day happen to Enda. It’s just so hard to take all this in,” he added.

Patrick said that all he wanted now was to see his son brought home and buried in Carndonagh where he could visit him.

“At this stage I’m not sure how we will get Enda home. I just need to get him home.

“I need to be able to see him and to hold him and to place him in a coffin and to be able to visit his grave.

“I suppose that’s what any father wants if they are unfortunate enough to lose a child,” added Patrick.

Enda’s sister Catherine said the family felt let down by the system.

“Enda needed psychiatric care, not prison. Every time he came out of prison he was worse than before,” she said.

“He never grew up. He was like a child. Enda was diagnosed with bipolar disorder; he had mental issues and that was never properly addressed. He was sick.”

A group of students and lecturers from the Department of Nursing and Health Studies, including seven volunteers from Co Donegal, are currently volunteering in Missionvale Community Project.

This is in a very poor township in Port Elizabeth, South Africa which is home to 130,000 people.

The project was founded by Sister Ethel Normoyle, a native of County Clare, in 1988 who has worked tirelessly to establish a nutrition unit as well a health clinic, a community garden, a primary school and a crèche.

Since arriving the students have been shocked by the contrast in lifestyles and the inequalities that exist side by side.

Some of the food produce brought by the volunteers.

Some of the food produce brought by the volunteers.

So far the students have worked in the nutrition unit and on Monday food supplies were given to 950 people to feed their family for a week.

This unit is vital for sustaining a good level of health as many people have conditions such as TB, HIV and Aids. Breakfast is also provided for the children of the area to help with concentration at school because many do not get a breakfast at home.

The Missionvale Care Centre was yesterday visited by four members of the South African Springbok rugby team who were greeted with great excitement.

Siya Kolisi one of the players who grew up in a township around the corner from Missionvale addressed the children.

“If you can dream it you can do it, but you should always work hard to achieve your dreams.”

This was important for the children to hear that anything is possible no matter where you come from.

The team consists of lecturers Mary Dunnion and Kevin O`Brien; students Aoife Kilcullen, Natasha Bell, Geraldine Langan, Fiona Sweeney, Melissa McGrath, Aoife Ní Raighailligh, Maria Woods, Aoibhinn McMahon and Carol Mc Elhinney.

The group had to fundraise for this volunteering project and would like thank the communities in Donegal, Leitrim and Monaghan for their generosity.

The seven volunteers from Donegal include Aoife Kilcullen, Geraldine Langan, Natasha Bell, Carol Mc Elhinney, Fiona Sweeney and Mary Dunnion.

BEEF REGULATOR NEEDED TO ENSURE FAIRNESS FOR DONEGAL FARMERS – McCONALOGUE

Fianna Fáil TD for Donegal North East Charlie McConalogue is calling for the establishment of a Beef Regulator to deal with the ongoing beef crisis.

Charlie McConalogue

Charlie McConalogue

He claims the current situation is jeopardising the livelihoods of some 100,000 farms across the country, with almost 5,500 beef farmers in Donegal alone.

Speaking in the Dáil last night in support of a Fianna Fáil motion to establish a Beef Regulator Deputy McConalogue said beef farmers in Donegal have become increasingly squeezed over the past year.

This has come about with the collapse in bull beef prices, stringent labeling requirements and changes to age and weight specifications by processors, he claimed.

“In the past six months beef prices have plummeted by as much as 20% and are now well below an economically viable standard.

“The fall in Irish beef prices comes at a time when retail prices in the UK are rising, leading to questions about retailers margins here. Many farm organisations claim the larger multiples are increasing their margins at the expense of the producer, and threatening the industry’s future.

“Farmers in Donegal are already struggling on low incomes. A Teagasc income survey revealed that the average beef producer earned €9,469 in 2013 compared to the overall farming average of €25,000. For many, this crisis could spell the end of their business.”

He said the Fianna Fáil has been calling for a beef regulator in a bid to create a fairer system for farmers and retailers.

“A regulator for the market would increase transparency and create a more level playing field for farmers and retailers instead of allowing large supermarket chains and processors dominate the market. However, any regulator would need to be given proper powers and resources to oversee the industry and make direct recommendations to the Government.

“We need to see decisive action from Minister Coveney instead of the lacklustre detached approach which has been forthcoming. He seems more interested in moving to a new portfolio rather than addressing the crisis that is under his nose”.

GSOC REMOVED LEITRIM OFFICER FROM DONEGAL MURDER PROBE – GARDAÍ

The late Seamus Doherty.

The late Seamus Doherty.

THE Garda Ombudsman removed a senior Garda from an internal probe in Donegal Gardai, the force said in a statement tonight.

The high-ranking officer from Co Leitrim had been appointed to carry out an internal investigation into the handling of the death of well-known Churchill man Seamus Doherty.

Mr Doherty, 67, was found dead in the bathroom of his home on June 17th, 2012 after a violent struggle.

However the father-of-four’s death was not declared a murder until almost three days later.

Although people have been quizzed about his death, nobody has yet been charged with his murder.

Mr Doherty’s death was raised in the Dail last week by Sinn Fein Justice spokesman Padraig MacLochlainn.

The Doherty family has continually expressed serious concerns about the Garda investigation into the death.

Now Deputy MacLochlainn has put down a Dail question on the matter.

Minister Frances Fitzgerald has said Gardai will co-operate with the GSOC investigation.

Deputy MacLochlainn says the Co Donegal family deserve answers and a proper investigation.

“The victim’s family are seeking justice for their late father, a murder victim, after all justice delayed is justice denied. This family have now waited over one year and 7 months for a GSOC investigation, with no end in sight”.

Deputy MacLochlainn’s question asks the Minister for Justice and Equality if she is aware of the lack of cooperation by the Management level of the Donegal division of An Garda Síochána with a Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (“GSOC”) investigation relating to the murder of Mr Doherty.

The victim’s family made complaints at a local level to An Garda Síochána and additionally lodged a complaint to GSOC on the 5th November 2012, regarding aspects of the case and their treatment by An Garda Síochána.

The GSOC investigation was initially investigated in accordance with Section 94(5) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005, that is a supervised investigation.

However GSOC changed the investigation to an investigation in accordance with Section 95 of the Act.

Deputy MacLochalinn said “It must be highlighted, that the investigation was changed as a result of the lack of cooperation of the management of the Donegal division of An Garda Síochána, which was confirmed in writing to the victim’s family in July 2013.”

In a letter to the family GSOC said they had asked the Leitrim officer to discontinue his investigation – not as a result of his “commendable” work – but because of an alleged lack of cooperation in Donegal

Tonight a Garda spokesman said: “A senior officer from Leitrim did not resign from the investigation into how Garda handled the investigation into the death of the individual.

“As per procedures laid out in the Garda Siochana Act 2005, GSOC decided that they should investigate the complaint into the Garda investigation. As such, GSOC took over the case and, therefore, the senior officer from An Garda Siochana was no longer required to investigate this matter. This complaint and a second complaint on the matter remain under investigation by GSOC.”

IS THIS THE END OF DONEGAL PROTESTS? JUST ONE MUM, 3 CHILDREN TAKE ON MINISTER

JUST four people turned out this evening to protest at the presence of natural resources minister Pat Rabbitte on a visit to Donegal – and three of them were children.

Just Corina McCallig and her children Nikita (10), six-year-old Ethan and little daughter Emily, who is three, bothered to protest outside the Radisson Hotel in Letterkenny.

The minister was in the town the mark the ending of work on a new high-powered electricity line finishing at a switching station in Glenties.

Protest groups – and farmers – had opposed the 110 kilovolt line, claiming it had ruined the countryside.

However Eirgrid and the Minister have insisted Donegal needs stable power supply to help attract jobs and investment to the county.

Ms McCallig had somehow gotten her hands on an election poster belonging to Fine Gael councillor Terence Slowey – and turned it into a protest poster against Irish Water.

“I’m still here,” she said when asked why so few people were continuing to protest against water and property taxes.

“I won’t stop protesting. This government has sold us all down the river. They’ve taxed our homes, sold off our water and sold off our gas and oil and natural resources.”

She then turned on the Minister when he arrived, heckling him. She told him: “You’ve sold all our natural resources Minister. My children will have to leave this country because of you.”

Minister Rabbitte, who is expected to be axed from the Cabinet in the upcoming reshuffle, said he was doing what was in the interests of the country.

But why so few protests now in Donegal?

“I’m here with my children,” said the mother of three.

“I won’t stop speaking up for our children.”

There was a significant Garda presence in the area, but no real protest to police. Just one Garda stood alongside the mother and her children.

A5 ROAD PROJECT MUST BE KEPT HIGH ON POLITICAL AGENDA HEARS OIREACHTAS COMMITTEE

The Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement has this afternoon heard calls to keep the delivery of the A5 road project high on the political agenda on both sides of the border.

Deputy Joe McHugh

Deputy Joe McHugh

Representatives from local authorities on both sides of the border in the Northwest, who comprise the A5 Working Group, were before the Committee to call for a further push to deliver the A5 road upgrade.

The project includes 86 km of dual carriageway from Aughnacloy in Co Tyrone to Newbuildings outside Derry City.

Committee Chairman Joe McHugh says: “We thank local representatives for making the compelling case for delivery of the A5 road upgrade. There is no doubt that the longstanding dearth of modern transport infrastructure to the Northwest is seriously hindering development, and the relatively high unemployment and poverty rates can be directly attributable to this lack of connectivity.

“Committee Members also pointed to how delivery of the project underpins so many other areas of North/South cooperation, such as in areas of education and health. With the successful launch of the Wild Atlantic Way tourist route this year, the tourism potential of the road upgrade was also highlighted.”

He added that the Committee fully takes on board the local representatives’ call for the issue to be kept to the top of the political agenda.

“A number of Members pointed to the imperative for tight timelines to avoid any further slippages on the delivery of this critical piece of infrastructure. The Irish Government have committed £50 million to the project and the Committee agreed to ensure the concerns raised this afternoon will be outlined to Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar TD. On 10 July, the Committee will visit the Secretariat of the North South Ministerial Council in Armagh and we intend to raise delivery of the project in our discussions with officials at those meetings.”

Separately, the Committee met with representatives from the Centre for Cross Border Studies to consider developments in North/South cooperation.

The Centre is an independent university-based research and development centre which commissions, encourages and publishes research on cross-Border co-operation in all fields of society and the economy.

Deputy McHugh continues: “The Committee heard a comprehensive report on the current levels of cross border cooperation from Centre for Cross Border Studies and where the potential exists to further strengthen cooperation.

“A number of positive developments in the area were instanced in the area of education, such with the numbers of Donegal students attending the Northwest College in Derry. However, Committee Members are acutely aware that overall numbers of students from Northern Ireland studying south of the border remain very low and that more needed to be done to incentivise cross-border study.”
