Here are all of the results and match reports from this week’s Donegal League games.

Wednesday 17th April 2024
Temple Domestic Appliances Division One
Gweedore United 2 v 1 Letterkenny Rovers
Gweedore United welcomed Letterkenny Rovers to the Gaeltacht for their final home game of the season. The game was played on a sunny but chilly spring evening which saw the home team inflict the first league defeat of the season on the current League Champions. The visitors arrived with a good spring in their step following confirmation of their league title at the weekend. In the first half there was very little between the teams. The visitors got a break in the 11th minute when Lee Mc Monagle found himself through one on one with the home keeper and the experienced Mc Monagle finished well to make it 1-0. United grew into the game and saw good chances fall to Ciaran Mc Fadden, Steven “Doyle” Mc Fadden and Darren ferry. In the 48th minute Rovers almost doubled their lead when Rory Gallagher crossed from the left- hand side and forced a good save from Oran Craig who tipped over his crossbar. In the 55th minute the game was level, great play down the right- hand side from United’s Ciaran Mc Fadden who placed an inviting cross into the Letterkenny box which was well controlled by Darren Ferry who used great skill and managed to score from close range despite a cluster of defenders in front of him. The Gweedore men had a couple of chances in a few minutes shortly after to take the lead. An excellent move down the right-hand side in the 57th minute from Ciaran Mc Fadden again picked out Steen Doyle Mc Fadden who thought that he had scored after beating the keeper however Rovers’ Nathan Bonner was in the right place at the right time to ensure the game remained level. Another cross from United’s Ciaran Mc Fadden was headed just wide by Darren Ferry as Gweedore took further charge of the game. In the 79th minute the home side took a deserved lead when Ronan O’ Donnell won a 50-50 ball and played Darren Ferry through with a great pass and Ferry dinked it over the advancing Rovers’ keeper. Both teams pressed for more goals but were unable to add to the score line. An impressive performance by United’s Darren Ferry who produced a man of the match performance. Referee: Con Mc Laughlin

Lagan Harps 0 v 3 Donegal Town
Donegal Town took the three points after a strong performance at Letterkenny Community Centre. The game was even early on but two quick goals from Declan Duignan midway through the first half turned the game in their favour. Lagan battled away in the second half but Donegal always looked the more dangerous. Conur Crossan went close for Lagan when he shot just over. Donegal got the insurance goal with another quick counter in the second half and the ever-dangerous Ronan Mc Hugh finished well. Oisin Harkin was unlucky for Lagan with a brilliant effort that struck the crossbar but Donegal ran out deserving winners.

Glencar Inn Saturday Division One
Glencar Celtic 2 v 1 Keadue Rovers Reserves
In a tight game it was Glencar who got off the mark first when some great work down the right hand side saw Joe Baker get on the end of a great cross from Peter Doherty to put Glencar 1-0 up. That didn’t last long as within 60 seconds Keadue broke up the park and equalised with a well worked goal. In the second half Glencar were the stronger team and came close when a Russell Forde header was excellently saved by the keeper. Forde did get his goal straight after when he got on the end of another cross and the keeper couldn’t do anything about this one. Keadue put the pressure on to get the equaliser and thought they did in the final moments only for a great block on the line from Barney Mc Menamin. The game ended 2-1

Saturday 20th 2024
Glencar Inn Saturday Division One
Glencar Celtic 1 v 1 Arranmore United
Tough game in the heat down at the Aura and Arranmore got off to the better start when they caught Glencar on the counter attack and slotted home to make it 1-0. Glencar and equalised in the second half through Pajo Rafferty. They had a few chances to get the winner then but just couldn’t put the ball in the net, full time 1-1.

Cappry Rovers Reserves 0 v 1 Donegal Town Reserves
Cappry welcomed Donegal Town to the Finn Valley Centre on Saturday for the final league game of the season. The stakes were high as Donegal Town needed the points to stay out of the relegation zone. Cappry had the better of the opening exchanges, Aaron Kelly coming closest with an effort from distance.
Donegal Town took the lead at the midway point when the ball was cut back to the edge of the box and smashed home into the corner of the net. Donegal Town had several big chances in the second half to extend their lead as Cappry netminder Dylan Doherty made several excellent saves. It was an exciting finish as Cappry rallied for an equaliser and thought they had it when Jack Marley slotted home a Matthew Wootton knockdown, however the decision from the referee was offside and Donegal Town hung on for all three points.

Old Orchard Saturday Division Two
Milford United Reserves 0 v 0 Drumbar United
(No Report Submitted)

Sunday 21st April 2024
Temple Domestic Appliances Division One
Bonagee United 5 v 0 Letterbarrow Celtic
The home side were one up after fifteen seconds when Sean Hume played the ball down the line to Aaron Wasson who set up Dean Larkin who hammered home ten yards. It was goal number two one minute later when Michael Funston’s strike from thirty yards was well saved by the keeper but the ball rebounded to Arron Wasson who headed home from six yards. Wasson saw his strike from the edge of the box on twelve minutes saved by the visitor’s keeper. The visitors first real chance of the game came on fifteen minutes when Christy Mc Laughlin shot over from the edge of the box. The third goal came on thirty minutes when Jordan Armstrong crossed into the box and Taylor Russell tapped into the net from six yards. The visitors had several key players missing but the eleven on the day did not lie down and were always a threat on the break. The home side squandered several easy chances in the first half. The fourth goal came on forty-three minutes when an Aaron Wasson cross into the box was headed home by Shaun Hume at the back post. The final goal came on fifty minutes when the ball fell to Dean Larkin on the penalty spot and he hammered home. Bonagee made several changes midway through the second half and Peadar Shallows in the visitor’s goal made a number of great saves from Fintan Hassan, Ricky Guntrip and Ultan Mc Monagle. Kevin Mc Bride was unlucky to see his header hit the post and go wide for a goal kick from a Letterbarrow corner on seventy minutes. Team efforts from both sides. Referee: Con Mc Laughlin.

Cappry Rovers 0 v 1 Letterkenny Rovers
Letterkenny had a chance early on to score but Lee Mc Monagle failed to convert from close range. Cappry went close a few minutes later when Kyle Ruttledge had an effort from distance go wide. Cappry defended well throughout the first half and almost took the lead on the stroke of halftime but Peter Sweeney’s effort was saved. Letterkenny took the lead early in the second half when Dean Mc Carry scored from close range after his initial header was well saved by Brendan Gallen. Cappry, to their credit, kept going but couldn’t find a leveller. Two Team Performances.

Donegal Town 5 v 0 Convoy Arsenal
Donegal welcomed Convoy to the Hospital Field for the last game of the season. Goals by Eoghan O’ Neill, Ciaran Monaghan, Eoin Slevin and a brace from Ronan McHugh gave Donegal all three points against a young and gallant convoy side. Referee: George Clinton

Glenea United 1 v 2 Gweedore United
The final game of the season was played in perfect conditions and Glenea took the lead on 25 minutes when Shane Coll finished from the edge of the box. Gweedore got an equaliser with 20 minutes to go which brought the pace of the game up a level with both teams pushing for a winner. Gweedore took the lead with five minutes to go leaving Glenea chasing an equaliser but the visitors held on for all three points. Good performances from both teams on the day. Referee: Mick Lagan

Major awareness campaign for dog owners launched

A major awareness campaign for dog owners has been launched by Government today.

The campaign entitled – ‘It’s not your dog’s fault, it’s yours’ – is aimed at increasing awareness of the harm that out of control dogs can do to people and to livestock.

Monday 22th April 2024; Heather Humphreys, Minister for Social Protection and Minister for Rural and Community Development, with John Twomey, Chair of the Dog Control Stakeholder Group, mark the start of a major advertising campaign on ‘responsible dog ownership’, Picture credit: Damien Eagers / Julien Behal Photography NO REPRO FEE

Launching the campaign, Minister Heather Humphreys said: “Being a dog owner is a privilege, but it comes with a lot of responsibilities.”

“We have seen far too many devastating attacks by dogs on people, especially young children, in recent times.

“I know the majority of dog owners are responsible and do the right thing. But we can all be guilty of thinking our dog wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

“No matter how harmless a dog might seem they can be capable of causing a lot of damage. Ultimately, as the campaign says: it’s not your dog’s fault, it’s yours.”

“Dog owners must make sure their dog is under control at all times, not running wild endangering people, livestock or other dogs.”

“I want this campaign to make people think twice about letting their dog loose and uncontrolled.”

Donegal-based Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue T.D welcomed the campaign, sharing his hope that it will encourage wider conversations on dog owner responsibilities:

“I really welcome this campaign. I know how traumatic dog attacks can be to people, especially children. I am also acutely aware of the devastation done to livestock by marauding dogs, causing terrible suffering to the animals and both emotional and financial distress to farming families.”

“I believe it is essential we have conversations about responsible dog ownership and illustrating the dangers of marauding dogs, protecting people and animals from dog attacks.”

“Dogs are a great addition to a home and a family, but owners must provide for their welfare and wellbeing, taking their responsibilities seriously. Dog owners should ensure their dog has regular visits to the vet, good nutritious food and water, exercise and mental stimulation.”

“I would like to encourage the many excellent charities working in the area of animal welfare, supported by my Department through the Animal Welfare Grants Programme, to leverage this campaign to share their own messages on responsible dog ownership.”

This campaign follows closely from a series of related initiatives;

· Increases in on-the-spot fines up to €300

· Additional €2 million to support dog pounds

· The establishment of the Dog Control Stakeholder Group.

The Stakeholder Group was established by Minister Humphreys in March of this year and is independently chaired by retired Deputy Garda Commissioner Mr John Twomey.

The Group includes a broad range of sectoral interests and experts and been tasked with reviewing existing policy in relation to dog control and breeding establishments.

Welcoming the campaign John Twomey said:

“The campaign being launched today is an important step and just the beginning of a number of measures we need to introduce to reduce attacks by uncontrolled dogs.

“The Independent Stakeholder Group that I chair has an ambitious work plan and I would like to thank them for their willingness to engage so fully with this important issue.

“I look forward to working with them to bring further recommendations to the Government in due course.”

A Mountcharles man found in possession of a quantity of cocaine during a popular music festival has been spared a conviction.

John Murray was found with €150 worth of cocaine during the Rory Gallagher Festival in Ballyshannon.

Inspector Angela Cummins told Ballyshannon District Court that a substance found during a search of Murray was confirmed to be cocaine.

Murray, a 31-year-old with an address at Drumgorman, Mountcharles, was before the court.

His solicitor, Mr Tom MacSharry, said Murray understood that this is a very serious matter.

“He was at a festival and experimenting with these very dangerous substances, which are a scourge,” Mr MacSharry said.

The court heard that Murray is engaged to be married and currently works in Scotland in the fishing industry.

“There was never a situation where there wouldn’t be a plea,” Mr MacSharry said, adding that his client had brought €500 in cash to court which he said could be used as a charitable donation.

Mr MacSharry said Murray fully co-operated with gardai and has no previous convictions.

Judge Liddy approved the €500 donation to Little Blue Heroes. Finding the facts proven in the case, Judge Liddy struck out the matter.

Adrian makes waves of change raising over €70,000 for motor neurone disease

It was ‘mission accomplished’ for the intrepid teams who took on the Summit 2 Sea for MND challenge last weekend.

For the Moville man who inspired it all, it was an emotional and triumphant feat beyond the wildest dreams.

Adrian Harkin, a keen kayaker and swimmer originally from Derry who ran Inish Adventures, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in August of 2022. As the disease quickly robbed him of his love of watersports, he turned his attention to raising funds and awareness of MND.

But a plan formed in his mind, and thankfully Adrian’s friends are as daring as he is to turn that vision into a reality.

On Saturday, volunteers completed a 3,172 kilometres relay circumnavigation of Irelands’ coastline, coupled with hikes to the highest points in each of the country’s 32 counties.

The climax arrived in Moville, where Adrian was back on the water for a momentous homecoming cheered on by family and friends.

This groundbreaking feat resonated across Ireland, with online donations surpassing €70,000 and counting.

Reflecting on the day, Adrian and the Summit 2 Sea team shared a heartfelt statement to everyone who took part.

“Your dedication, enthusiasm, and unwavering support have truly made this event a success beyond measure,” they said.

Photo: Summit 2 Sea for MND Facebook

“Whether you donated, paddled, or walked, volunteered, shared our posts, or simply cheered us on from afar, your contributions have made a difference in the fight against Motor Neurone Disease.

“Your support has helped Adrian and the team raise awareness for MND.

“As we reflect on the incredible moments shared during the Summit 2 Sea for MND, let us carry forward the spirit of camaraderie, compassion, and resilience. Together, we are making waves of change and leaving a lasting legacy in the fight against MND.

“Thanks is not enough. Everyone who touched the Summit 2 Sea for MND campaign has made Adrian’s 4 little words “I’ve got a plan” a reality we will be forever grateful.

“With deepest appreciation, Adrian and the Summit 2 Sea for MND Organisation Team.”

Jackie Crossan Premier Division Promotion /Relegation Play Off

Glengad United 0

Culdaff FC 0

AET   Culdaff win 5-4 in sudden death penalty shootout

Glengad Unites fifteen year stay in the premier division was ended on Saturday evening in Maginn Park wen they fell to a penalty shootout defeat to neighbours Culdaff who are now promoted. As expected in a local derby the first half was a very tight affair with few chances and the game dominated by both defences. Culdaff had the first sight of goal on 8 minutes after a short corner played to  Aiden Cunningham saw his cross headed back by Ryan Greene for Michael Coyle but under pressure his header was claimed by Michael McLaughlin. The only other threat came at the other end in the 27th minute when Terence Doherty collected a throw in on the right inside the area and hooked the ball over his head which Patrick McLaughlin punched clear under pressure.Culdaff started the second half well and Euan McFeely had an effort from the right hand side of the area off target. On 55 minutes Keith Norris won a race for possession on the left and his driven cross found McFeely whose effort was blocked before Glengad scrambled the ball away. Glengad responded with Matthew Mooneys corner flashing across goal to Seamus Doherty whose first time effort was blocked by a defender. Substitute Stephen Doherty then found space to unleash a thirty yards effort which flashed over the bar . On 76 minutes Glengad had the best opportunity of the game after Terence Doherty broke past the last defender and advanced towards the area but his effort was superbly saved by McLaughlin. Culdaff replied and substitute Brendan Mclaughlin’s cross cum shot glanced off the face of the bar before the same player spurned a gilt edged opportunity from point blank range. After good interplay the ball was fed to another substitute Noel McLaughlin on the right and his low cross fell to brother Brendan who inexplicably fired wide from four yards. Glengad dominated the first period of extra time with Terence Doherty seeing a shot from the edge of the area saved before having another effort flash just wide. Substitute Oran Doherty then had an effort gathered at the second attempt before Stephen Doherty raced through the middle but McLaughlin advanced to smother at the edge of the area. Culdaff started the second period well with a Brendan Mclaughlin free and a snapshot from Coyle parried away on both occasions  by McLaughlin. Glengad spurned the final chance and another good one after a superb reverse pass from Stephen Doherty sent Terence Doherty clear but Mclaughlin blocked with his legs. The final few minutes were interrupted by the sprinkler system but the match ended and the shootout ensued. It was three each after the reglation five and then both sides missed. Both then scored before Mclaughlin saved and substitute Matthew McGoldrick fired home to send Culdaff back to the premier division and consign Glengad to the first division.

Ulster Junior Shield  Final

Cockhill clinch Shield title in Ballyare.

Cockhill Youths 2

Keadue Rovers Res 0

Cockhill Celtic Youth claimed the Ulster Junior Shield earlier this evening after a two nil victory over Keadue Rovers Reserves (Donegal League) at Diamond Park, Ballyare. The Inishowen side settled the better in the opening exchanges and Cockhill’s Captain Ryan Downey had a header just over the bar on six minutes from a Mason McDaid delivery. Keadue grew more into the match as the first half progressed and bossed the majority of the possession but had little or no reward only a few long range efforts from Daire Gallagher and Aiden McHugh. Keadue had their first real effort of note on 28 minutes when they were  awarded  a free twenty five yards from goal but Cockhills keeper Darragh O’Donnell saved the effort from Daire Gallagher. Cockhills Darragh McDermott then missed a great opportunity to put the Inishowen side ahead but somehow he managed to put the ball over the bar from close range after a great delivery into the box from Liam Bradley as the sides went in scoreless at the break.  The second period started with Keadue in control and things got better for the Donegal League side when Cockhill were reduced to ten men on 50 minutes after Liam Bradley got a second yellow for a challenge on Dan Kerr. Cockhill responded to the setback in fantastic fashion by going ahead with their very next attack. Five  minutes later Cockhills Christy Duffy played a pass to Conor Allen on the left and he beat his man on the outside and got to the byline before delivering a great pass across goal for Paul Mullan to arrive and side foot to the net past keeper Denis Kpstkykin from six yards much to the delight of the Cockhill following. The  Inishowen side increased their lead just past the hour mark after  Darragh McDermott picked up on a loose clearance by Ethan McCaff twenty five  yards from goal and shot right footed to the net past keeper Kpstkykin outstretched left hand – a great strike from McDermott. Keadue made a few changes to get themselves back in the game but anything thrown at the Cockhill defence was dealt with comfortably. The one chance that did fall came to  Daire Gallagher on 72 minutes but the impressive Ryan Downey was there with a goal saving tackle inside the six yard box injuring himself in doing so but was able to continue after treatment. Keadue kept probing but Cockhill almost caught them on the counter when the lively Paul Mullan picked up the ball on the right inside his own half and went on a run down the right wing before beating two opponents as he headed into the box and his final shot brought a great save from keeper Kpstkykin in what would have been a goal worthy of winning any football match. As Keadue pushed to get back into the game Cockhill could have added a third on 83 minutes but Connor McDaid failed to put the finishes touches on a wonderful pass from his brother Ryan. The final action of note was when Cockhills Darragh O’Donnell produced an excellent save with his legs from Aaron McCafferty deep into stoppage time to deny Keadue what would have been a consolation at that stage.

Jackie Crossan Premier Division

Cockhill clinch league title

Greencastle FC 0

Cockhill Celtic 2

Needing a point to clinch the league title Cockhill began well with a Lee McColgan free saved by Caolan McGrory.  Garbhan Friel then broke on the right and crossed  for Brendan McLaughlin but he was denied by a superb Ruari O’Donnell tackle. They took the lead on 12 minutes after Peter Doherty at the back post headed a deep free kick back out to McColgan who hammered low past McGrory from sixteen yards. Greencastle responded and O’Donnell crept in at the back post but fired over the bar.  Kyle Harkin then crossed for Nigel McMonagle who failed to direct his header on target before Harkin had a free gathered by Harry Doherty in the Cockhill goal. The visitors had the final chance of the half after McLaughlin broke into the area on the left but fired into the side netting. A scrappy second half saw Luke Rudden head the first chance wide for the visitors when well placed. Greencastle hit back with Nigel McMonagle breaking on the right and shooting just past the left hand post. The home side then had a spell with Seamus McLaughlin advancing on the left and his dangerous cross was scrambled clear. Their best chance came midway through the half when McMonagle got in behind the visitors defence but under pressure his half volley was well saved by Doherty.  Cockhill sealed the victory and the league title when a Corey McBride free from the right dropped under the  croccbar giving McGrory no chance. In the later stages Cockhill had a Peter Doherty shot saved and both Rudden and Friel blazed over as they saw the game out.

Buncrana Hearts 4

Illies Celtic 3

Illies took the lead in the 6th minute after Paul Doherty rose unchallenged to head home from a corner past Taylor Clarke.  From another corner Dominic Coyle saw another header saved by Clarke.  The home side replied with Aaron McDaid firing wide from Matthew Brownes cross before Shaunie Bradley cut inside a defender but saw his effort saved by the legs of Michael Owen Doherty. The Hearts were unlucky on 25 minutes from a Conor Doherty corner when Kevin O’Loughlins header crashed off the bar.  But Illies were causing problems especially in the flanks and Shaun McCallion broke on the right and crossed for Coyle to control and fire low past Clarke from nine yards.  They then made it three nil in the 36th minute after McCallion beat three men  and was upended in the area leaving Adrian Donaghey-Doherty to send Clarke the wrong way from the spot. Buncrana got a lifeline on the stroke of half time when a Calvin Gallagher Crossfield pass found McDaid who advanced along the byeline and squeezed the ball home from a tight angle. The home side upped the tempo after the restart and dominated . They got another goal back in the 49th minute when  a Kieran McDaid cross cum shot deceived Doherty and crept in at the post. Six minutes later they got back on terms after Kieran McDaids cross found Zach McFadden who v superbly guided a volley from seven yards past Doherty. And the turn around was compledt when they took the lead in the65th minute after Kieran McDaids cross was met with a superb glancing header from Aaron McDaid. The home side had two further late chances with Aaron McDaid firing into the side netting before Bart Wesolowski ran onto a through ball but Doherty advanced to smother.

Strand Hotel First Division

Redcastle United 3

Rashenny FC 2

The home side began well with Stephen Grant crossing for Josh McConnellogue but he fired over the bar from the edge of the area. But on five minutes McConnellogue fired the home side ahead collecting an Eamon Donnelly pass  before drilling low past Sean Friel. But Rashenny grew into the game with Jon Grant seeing an effort from close range saved by Michale McCole . Then from a Redcastle corner David McLaughlin broke the length of the field and forced McCole in to another save from the edge of the area. On 40 minutes McLaughlin cut in from the left and found Cormac Dillon but he fired just past the right hand post. Against the run of play in the 44th minutes the home side doubled their lead when Donnelly collected a ball into midfield and released Grant to slot low past Friel. Redcastle had the first opportunity of the second half also when Lee Barr fed Grant whose cross picked out Darragh McConway but he fired just wide. But Rashenny responded and in the 55th minute got a goal back after a superb run and cross from Doherty picked out McLaughlin who headed to the top corner. Redcastle again stretched their lead on 75 minutes when Mark Farren collected a ball on the edge of the area and cut inside to shoot past Friel from fifteen yards.  But the visitors rallied  and on 82 minutes made it three two after Ryan Dohertys cross found John McLaughlin to head past McCole. Redcastle had a late chance then with Shaun Curran finding Farren but he shot narrowly wide.

Sea Rovers 4

Cockhill Colts 1

Played in glorious sunshine at Gortnamullin Rovers knew only a victory would guarantee them a potential play off for the league title. The home side got off to the  perfect start when a long kick from Rovers keeper Mark Mc Laughlin fell to Andrew Gallagher who finished perfectly to put the home side ahead. In a good evenly matched game with the greater of goal scoring opportunities falling to Rovers, a great strike by Daniel Gallagher forced Cockhill keeper Declan Caldwell into making a fine save. Rovers kept up the pressure and were rewarded when Andrew Gallagher beat a defender and shot low past the keeper Caldwell to leave them two goals to the good at the interval. The home side began the second half well and a good touch by Daniel Gallagher rounded one defender and a great strike from outside the box put the ball out of the reach of the keeper   to fire Sea Rovers three goal ahead. Cockhill responded and won a corner which fell kindly  to Jude O donnell who tapped in from close range to reduce the deficit. Cockhill pressed but a well claimed ball by Mark Mc Laughlin whose long ball again fell to Andrew Gallagher who took a fine touch and lobbed the keeper  to complete his hat trick. St Eunans National School Raphoe has been granted a Special Classroom for pupils with additional needs.

The classroom will benefit students in the new academic year.

Donegal Fine Gael TD Joe McHugh has welcomed the development for the children who will use the additional facility, for their families and for the entire school community.

He said: “I met with Principal Anita Keeve, along with Fr. Kelly and members of the Board of Management and Parents Association in Raphoe a number of months ago, and this application for a Special Classroom was discussed as the school’s major priority.

“The school team have been working hard on this, putting measures in place to facilitate children with additional needs. Their main aim has been that children with additional needs could attend St. Eunan’s, in their own area, and then naturally progress to Secondary School in their own town, and I am delighted that this can now be a reality.

“I wish to acknowledge the Special Educational Needs Organiser (SENO) and the NCSE, for working with the team at St. Eunan’s, and for supporting them in ensuring they secured this vital facility at the school in Raphoe.

“I wish to commend the hard work and commitment to this project at St. Eunan’s by Principal Anita Keeve, her school team and the Board of Management, for their ongoing dedication to ensuring this application was successfully granted.”

Donegal diabetes crisis to be raised with Health Minister

Calls for an emergency plan for diabetes care in Donegal are to be raised with Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly after serious concerns for patient safety were raised in the Dáil.

A lack of consultants, three-year waiting lists and the deterioration of services has led Donegal campaigners to demand urgent resources in the north west.

We have a profound crisis in that there should be three endocrinologists in Letterkenny University Hospital but there is nobody there,” Sinn Féin Deputy Padraig Mac Lochlainn told the Dáil.

“People who get the job walk away because the level of support and resources are just not there.”

Deputy Mac Lochlainn was highlighting a letter to the Taoiseach by Donegal Branch of Diabetes Ireland Chairperson Paul Gillespie, which said that commitments made by Mr Simon Harris in 2016 and 2017 to improve diabetes care have not been honoured.

The current situation in Letterkenny University Hospital in 2024 is even worse than it was 7 years ago, Gillespie warns.

According to Gillespie, ‘There are currently NO Consultant Endocrinologists (3 vacant posts), which have led to recall waiting lists now over 36 months in some cases, whereas the HSE guideline is that people with Type 1 diabetes should be seen by an endocrinologist every 6 months.

“There are NO Advanced Nurse Practitioners in Adult Diabetes (2 posts never approved by HSE), which led to inability to provide structured diabetes education and access to insulin pump therapy, there are NO Podiatrists (2 Vacant posts), NO Paediatric Endocrinologist (never put in place by Saolta despite more than 160 children living with Type 1 Diabetes across Donegal), NO Psychologists, NO Shared Centre of Excellence for Children between LUH & Sligo University Hospital, despite the initial plans to share a centre due to the geographical isolation of LUH, and large population in Donegal.

“And there is still NO access to adult insulin pump start therapy due to severe shortage in Endocrinologists for over 10 years now and no adult ANP role.

The letter continues: “This serious under resourcing will lead to poor patient outcomes, increased hospital admissions and huge increase in a number of people suffering with the many side effects of chronic or frequent hypo- and hyperglycaemia, due to lack of support from multidisciplinary diabetes team, and frequent (bi-annual) and regular appointments.”

Deputy Mac Lochlainn is calling for an urgent meeting to be convened by the Minister for Health, Deputy Stephen Donnelly, “with all the senior people”, and that LUH be upgraded to model 4 hospital status.

Speaking on behalf of government Tánaiste Micheál Martin said that the HSE should be engaged with in the first instance: “We can write to the Taoiseach of the day but it will go back down the chain,” Minister Martin said.

“The Minister for Health has to deal with it, as does the HSE within the broader programme on diabetes generally. There has been substantial increased investment in LUH over the past number of years with increases in staff and so on. I will talk to the Minister for Health and make him aware of the fact that the issue has been raised.”

Doherty demands action as fuel prices head for €2 per litre

Sinn Fein’s Pearse Doherty has called on the Minister for Finance to cancel his government’s plans for further tax hikes on petrol and diesel this year.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Finance was speaking as the price of petrol and diesel rose sharply this month, with fears prices could reach €2 per litre.

Retailers along the Donegal border have also expressed concerns that motorists could go North to fill their tanks if prices continue to rise.

“The AA announced that petrol and diesel prices rose sharply this month, with fears the cost of fuel could soon rise to €2 per litre,” Deputy Doherty said.

“At the beginning of April, the government hiked the price of fuel for households and plans to do the same again in August and October.

“If the government presses ahead with these tax hikes, Irish households will face among the highest fuel prices in Europe. Petrol prices will have risen by at least 10 cent per litre, with diesel prices set to rise by at least 8 cents per litre.”

He also expressed concerns for retailers along the border.

“As the gap between fuel prices North and South continue to widen, the very viability of businesses and petrol stations in border counties will be under threat, with petrol set to be 20 cent per litre and diesel set to be 7 cent per litre more expensive in the South compared to the North,” he explained.

“It is time for the government to heed Sinn Féin’s call and scrap their planned tax hikes on petrol and diesel this year.”

Man who couldn’t remember taking car is banned

A Ballyshannon man who could not remember taking another person’s car while he was drunk has been given a suspended sentence.

Gerard McWeeney was also given a six-year driving ban for what his solicitor called ‘a moment of madness’.

The 51-year-old McWeeney, of West Rock, Ballyshannon, was before Ballyshannon District Court in connection with the case.

McWeeney was disqualified from driving when he took a vehicle from Market Street, Ballyshannon. Gardai received a report and launched an investigation.

Officers located the car a short distance away. McWeeney was identified as the driver and he made a voluntary caution memo to gardai.

The court heard that the offence was committed while McWeeney was serving a six-year disqualification. McWeeney told gardai he could not remember the incident, but identified himself on CCTV.

Mr Frank Murphy, solicitor for McWeeney, said his client was ‘in the midst of addiction’ when the incident occurred.

McWeeney has not drank in the last 14 months, his solicitor said.

“He was suffering from an addiction and taking pain medication,” Mr Murphy said. “He saw the vehicle with the keys in it and drove it a short distance down the road. The vehicle was recovered.

“It was a moment of madness. He is seeking help. He is sober for 14 months now and is in part-time employment. He is making amends and not making the same mistakes as during this aberration.”

Judge Ciaran Liddy said an aggravating factor was the disqualification that McWeeney was under at the time.

McWeeney was given a six-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years by Judge Liddy on condition that the accused does not drive a mechanically propelled vehicle during that time.

Judge Liddy handed McWeeney a six-year ban from driving.

On a separate charge of having no insurance, McWeeney was given a two-year disqualification, which is to run concurrently to the other ban.

Busy week ahead for Donegal GAA at all grades

The hectic schedule continues for Donegal GAA at all levels with four teams in championship action in the week ahead.

By Charlie Collins

The Under 20’s gets things underway on Wednesday night when they host Derry in the Ulster Championship semi-final at MacCumhaill Park with a 7:30pm throw-in. Shaun Paul Barrett’s men won all three games to top Group A while Derry finished Runners-up behind Tyrone in Group B and then beat Cavan in a Quarter-Final playoff. They will provide Donegal with their toughest test yet for a place in the Ulster Final against either Tyrone or Monaghan.

On Saturday next, Donegal’s unbeaten Minor team will be hoping to make it three wins from three when they travel to Pairc Elser in Newry to meet Down. It’s a 12noon start for Barry Ward’s charges who impressed in their opening two games against a Down team which has lost both their games so far.

Also on Saturday, the Donegal Senior Hurlers host Monaghan at O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny, in Round Three of the Nicky Rackard Cup. After good wins over both Armagh and Mayo, Mickey McCann’s men will also be hoping to make it three from three to maintain a strong position in the quest for another final appearance. With away matches against Roscommon and Louth to come, a win on Saturday is a must.

Then on Sunday it’s back to Celtic Park with a 2 pm start for Jim McGuinness and his high-flying squad to face old rivals Tyrone in the Ulster Senior Championship semi-final.

It’s a super fast turnaround for both teams after their victories over Derry and Cavan last weekend. Donegal will have an extra day to recover and prepare, while having been taken to extra-time by Cavan, Tyrone will have a day less to get themselves ready for this challenge. Another sellout attendance can expect for what should be a cracking encounter for a place in the final against either Armagh or Down.

So, a busy week for the Donegal footballers and hurling with the stakes high and the rewards great for the winners in all grades.

There is shock and sadness in Derry and Donegal following the death of a man in a hillwalking incident on Saturday afternoon.

He has been named locally as Brian Campbell from Derry, aged in his 50s.

A beautiful day in the sunshine turned to heartache when Brian suffered a tragic fall while walking with another man at the Poisoned Glen (Cró Nimhe) near Dunlewey.

Following a recovery operation, he was taken from the mountain and brought to the mortuary at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH).

The second man, also aged in his late 50s, suffered injuries and was airlifted from the scene to LUH.

His injuries have been described as non-life threatening.

“You were a true gentleman and you will be sorely missed,” said one tribute to Brian this morning.
