TCS celebrated for diversity and inclusion

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Letterkenny has been awarded the ‘Investors in Diversity’ Silver accreditation by the Irish Centre for Diversity.

Supported by the employer representative body, Ibec, Investors in Diversity is Ireland’s premier Diversity and Inclusion accreditation mark.

TCS is among the largest employers in the North-West region of Ireland, where TCS operates its Global Delivery Centre, based in Letterkenny.

Commenting on the award Leeanne Patterson, Head of Human Resources, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Letterkenny Global Delivery Centre said “Investors in Diversity Silver accreditation affirms that we have prioritised embedding Diversity & Inclusion into our company culture in the TCS Global Delivery Centre. As part of the process to gain this accreditation, we had to complete a rollout of an Equity Diversity and Inclusion survey for all employees.

“We look forward to building on the work that has been done to date and strive to receive Gold accreditation from the Irish Centre for Diversity.”

The TCS Global Delivery Centre in Letterkenny was first awarded Bronze accreditation in February 2023. The programme both recognises existing efforts and supports the journey of continuous improvement by providing a structured framework to transform workplace practices and culture.

This newly awarded silver accreditation affirms that TCS has been benchmarked against other bodies and has both embedded Inclusive practices across the operation as well as developed and fostered a sense of fairness and belonging among colleagues.

Building on the requirements of Bronze, the ‘Silver Investors in Diversity EDI Mark’ liberates the voice of the people within the organisation. The second step in the Investors in Diversity EDI Mark is about listening to what employees have to say and understanding how people are experiencing the culture within your organisation. In this part of the process, organisations measure the sense of fairness and belonging from the employees’ perspective.

Diversity and inclusivity are at the heart of the TCS culture. According to TCS Global Delivery Centre’s latest Gender Pay Gap Report, 36% of the Irish workforce are women which is significantly above the 19% IT Industry standard in the EU*. The overall gender pay gap across all employees in the TCS Letterkenny Global Delivery Centre is 6%, which is very positive in comparison to the national average of 9.6%**.

Caroline Cummins, Managing Director at Irish Centre for Diversity said, “We have enjoyed working with the team in TCS to support them on their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion journey. We are delighted to award TCS the Investors in Diversity Silver accreditation.”

Daire Ó Baoill has been nominated for the GAA.ie Player of the Week following his exceptional display in Celtic Park against Derry at the weekend.

The Gaoth Dobhair man chipped in (literally) with a pair of spectacular goals after catching Derry keeper Odhran Lynch off his line to bring his tally of 2-01.

Surprisingly, he was Donegal’s only nomination.

You can vote for Ó Baoill on the official GAA Instagram page.

A car was seized and a number of fines were issued this morning at multi-agency checkpoints in Inishowen.

Gardaí from Buncrana Roads Policing Unit were assisted by Revenue and Social Welfare Enforcement Officers in Muff and St. Johnston.

A number of fines were issued for non display of ‘N’ plates and for seatbelt offences.

A learner driver, who was unaccompanied on their journey, had their car seized under the Clancy Amendment.

“It is against the law for you to drive unaccompanied on a learner permit,” a garda spokesperson explained.

“Under the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system in Ireland, a learner permit holder must be accompanied at all times by someone who has held a full, valid driving licence in the same category for a minimum of two years.”

Over 4,300 LUH cancellations last year ‘not acceptable’ – SF

There were more than 4,300 cancellations at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) last year, according to Sinn Fein.

Referring to the figures, Donegal deputies Pádraig MacLochlainn and Pearse Doherty said the government’s lack of a plan for overcrowding was impacting directly on waiting lists.

“This government is failing to tackle hospital overcrowding which is leading to record levels of cancellations at Letterkenny University Hospital,” Deputy MacLochlainn said.

“There were 4,311 hospital appointments cancelled in 2023, up significantly from the previous year. It is a worrying increase.”

Over the last 13 years, he added, successive governments have made the health service worse.

“They have decimated local health services and created a crisis in our hospitals. They don’t have a plan for hospital overcrowding, and this is forcing hospitals to rely on cancellations. This is shifting the problem from overcrowded EDs onto lengthy waiting lists. This solution is not sustainable.”

Deputy Doherty claimed Sinn Fein has a plan for the health service to improve access, tackle hospital overcrowding, and reduce lengthy waiting lists.

“Sinn Féin would deliver 3,000 hospital and community beds to tackle overcrowding and inefficiency, end the recruitment embargo and train more health care professionals to safely staff the health service,” he said.

DD Pet Corner: Safely introducing a new baby to pets

Donegal Daily’s Pet Column is brought to you by veterinary nurse Michelle Kelly in association with Gary’s Pet World, Letterkenny Retail Park.

For all your pet food, health, accessories and toy needs, call instore or visit www.petworld.ie. Free shipping on orders over €29

We spend a lot of time preparing for a new baby in the home, but our pets don’t usually realise what is happening until the new baby moves in. Their life changes overnight and it can be a bit of a shock to the system.

Pets like routine and feel confident when they know what to expect. A new baby in the house can make them feel uncertain, they may get less attention and may be left alone longer than they are used to or not allowed into certain rooms now when they had been before.

How to start preparing your pets:

The earlier you prepare them the better, they’ll have a chance to adjust to the changes and will start to get used to the new routine. Go slowly and keep rewarding your pet as they learn, and you practice, to get things right at every stage.

Once the baby arrives you will thank yourself for taking the time to help your pets adjust, teaching them useful skills to help them settle.

  • Set up toys and equipment Toys, cots, prams, playpens, highchairs. Give your pets plenty of time to see them, hear any sounds they make and investigate. Build positive associations by rewarding them when you introduce something new.
  • Get them used to a new routine if your pet is no longer going to be allowed into certain rooms, they should be taught not to enter a while before the baby arrives. Set up baby gates if there are stairs etc.
  • Teach them to settle If your dog tends to bark at the doorbell or jumps on people when they come into the house, they need to stop doing this as much as possible. You are going to have lots of visitors in the first few months especially so having a crate set up or getting them used to being put outside or into another room is very useful for everyone’s safety. There are loads of videos online on how to teach these appropriately, so the dog doesn’t get stressed, or it might be a good idea to seek help from a dog trainer. Plenty of treats required.
  • Start practicing walking your dog alongside the pram – If your dog does not walk nicely on a lead, it can make walking with a pram quite difficult. It might be a good idea to get help from a dog trainer to help you train a loose lead walk with your dog and then start incorporating the pram into it once they are easier to walk. The dog needs to get used to the pram too! Plenty of treats will be needed here too.

Safety first

Always supervise dogs and babies. Even the most placid and gentle dog can become stressed and unpredictable. Make sure to give them your undivided attention when they are both in the same room.

If your baby is on the floor playing, it might be a good idea to place your dog in their crate or in another room. If you can, teach your dog a place command. This means having a bed in the room and placing them there with plenty of treats and when they get off it put them straight back on and give more treats. Teaching this command before the baby arrives can be useful.

The introduction

Ideally, keep the introduction minimal. Don’t make the baby interesting because this is where issues can arise.

If someone can, take the dog on a big walk to kill some energy before bringing them in to see the baby. If the dog is going to be very excited to see the owner, bring them in to them first without the baby and do not let them jump up, especially if they had an operation.

Hold the baby in your arms. Keep the dog on a short lead and have some treats available nearby. Let the dog sniff the baby’s clothes and only let this interaction last a few minutes.

Place the baby in its bed and give the dog some attention and some treats. Keep all interactions minimal and allow the dog to investigate the bed where the baby is but do not allow them to jump up at it.

It can be a very exciting time but try to include your furry friends in the planning, so they are prepared. There are plenty of resources online and there are loads of dog trainers who are more than happy to help with getting pets used to all the changes that come with bringing a baby home.

Michelle Kelly qualified with a BSc Honours in Veterinary Nursing from LYIT. She works full-time in a clinic in Derry. She is the proud owner of a labrador named Nala, who goes everywhere with her, even to work.

As a dog owner in the North West, Michelle says she sees a lot of misunderstanding around owning a pet. With her first hand experience in a veterinary practice, she wants to give up-to-date facts and information to pet owners and to be a person people can turn to for help and advice, especially in the local area of Donegal.

Arranmore teen to bring fishing rights campaign to European Parliament

Fourteen-year-old fisherwoman Muireann Kavanagh is set to bring her plea for fair fishing rights to the European Parliament this week.

Muireann, a native of Arranmore Island, is fighting for an end to the zero catch scenario for pollack and fair play for small-scale fishing communities.

Muireann has grown up fishing pollack with her father and uncles in a boat built by her late grandfather. Her family’s fishing heritage goes back generations, but it has come under threat this year when a zero catch scenario was recommended to rebuild pollack stocks.

Muireann’s own experience of being denied fishing rights in her local community has inspired her passionate fight, which began with a handwritten letter to Marine Minister Charlie McConalogue. She will now be brought to the very heart of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday during a visit hosted by Sinn Féin MEP Chris MacManus.

The Midlands Northwest MEP said he is committed to delivering the change that Muireann and the wider fishing community desperately need to see delivered.

MacManus and Kavanagh will take part in a series of engagements with a number of high-ranking MEPs who work on Regional Development and Fisheries, where she will make her case directly to senior EU figures and continue her fight for justice.

Families visiting Donegal have a new website to consult to find accessible and inclusive experiences for people with disabilities.

‘Access Donegal’ is part of the newly launched website by the Special Needs Parents Network in Donegal.

The webpage details fully accessible holiday homes, beach wheelchairs, and pioneering experiences for people with additional needs.

Caring Capall in Falcarragh, for example, provides equine therapy for children and adults with physical, emotional and cognitive difficulties. In south Donegal, the award-winning Liquid Therapy provides inclusive and adaptive surf therapy programmes.

“Families of those who have disabilities have to do extra research on accessibility and inclusivity even just for a day trip, so we really wanted to create a resource where it would make that process much easier and more straightforward,” said Josephine Corkery, a member of the Special Needs Parent Network in Donegal.

“Also there are many families who find it very difficult to travel or holiday abroad so we wanted to highlight Donegal as an accessible location where they can have the holiday of a lifetime.”

The new snpndonegal.com website also provides information and resources to individuals with a disability in Donegal and their family members. Helpful insights on benefits and entitlements, education and schools are shared on the site, which was created by parents/guardians for parents/guardians. The network began through social media last year in response to a lack of access to services from understaffed Children’s Disability Network Teams.

Josephine adds further recommendations will be added to ‘Access Donegal as the page grows: “There are organisations out there doing absolutely fantastic work on accessibility & inclusivity and we want to highlight these – we are more than happy to feature any organisation that offers accessible accommodation, places to visit and or experiences for children and adults with a disability on our website – contact snpndonegal@gmail.com and we will be in touch.”

More chances to earn local rewards as you enjoy Donegal parks and walks!

Donegal County Council has extended the Civic Dollars Pilot Project for two more years to encourage people to enjoy the great outdoors.

Participants who download the Civic Dollars mobile phone app (on Google Play or the App Store) can earn online credits by spending time in local outdoor resources that have been identified countywide.

Credits can then be redeemed in exchange for local and countywide rewards provided by the local business community e.g., a discounted coffee or discounted entry into a local attraction OR donate them to a locally identified community group who can exchange them for rewards.

The app measures time spent in a designated ‘Earn Zone’ and does not record steps or distance to ensure the project is inclusive of participants with mobility or health issues. The technology used is non-invasive and privacy-friendly, by only using GPS data and allowing users to opt in once they enter an ‘earn zone’. Data is anonymised, and a user’s session will end automatically once they walk out of the ‘earn zone’ geo-fence.

Speaking from the Shore Front Walk, Killybegs – a newly added ‘Earn Zone’ – Chair of Donegal Local Community Development Committee, Cllr. Niamh Kennedy said, “A measure of the success and popularity of the Civic Dollars project is in its growth from an initial five sites identified as ‘earn zones’ at our pilot launch in 2023 to over eighty sites across the County – including playgrounds, beaches, parks, trails, forest walks and the Shore Front walk along the Donegal and Shore Roads here in Killybegs”. Cllr. Kennedy added the Civic Dollars project aims to provide people with an incentive and support to improve their mental health, increase their physical activity levels, and encourage engagement with local community groups and support for the local business community.

Mr. Paddy Doherty, Senior Executive Officer, Community Development, Donegal County Council said ‘Communities enhance our sense of belonging, of spirit and of pride – all of which are vital elements of a healthy community. Donegal County Council working in partnership with our Local Community Development Committee is committed to promoting the health and wellbeing of the people and communities of Donegal through the delivery of projects funded under the Healthy Ireland Round 4 Programme.”

Identified ‘Earn Zones’ in the Civic Dollars project across Donegal include –

Rescue services were in action yesterday after a person injured their ankle at Sliabh Liag cliffs.

Donegal Mountain Rescue Team and Killybegs Coast Guard were both tasked to the call-out yesterday at 5.25pm. The casualty was located at a height of approximately 510 meters on the Pilgrim’s Path.

Due to the worsening condition of the injured hiker, the decision was made to request assistance from Rescue 118, the Irish Coast Guard helicopter.

Upon arrival at the scene, Rescue 118 personnel provided medical aid to the casualty before safely lifting them from the clifftop and transferring them to a hospital for further treatment.

A crew from the National Ambulance Service (NAS) was also present throughout the rescue operation.

A tiny one-room cottage on the west Donegal coast has just gone on the market with an asking price of almost €80,000.

Situated on a 1.04 acre plot near Dungloe, the stone dwelling has a floor area of just 30 square metres (323 sq ft) and is in need of complete restoration. It has been uninhabited for a number of years. The remains of a second cottage are also part of the sale.

The interior of the cottage needs a bit of TLC. Pic: Campbell’s Auctioneers.

Located in the townland of Marameelan, on the banks of Traighenna Bay, it is just a few minutes drive from Dungloe town, according to Campbells Auctioneers.

“Boasting unrestricted views over Traighenna Bay towards Lettermacaward and beyond, the property is ideally located for a modern dwelling, subject to planning permission,” the auctioneer said.

Derry native Brian Campbell will be remembered at a funeral service this Thursday, following his tragic passing after a fall while hiking in Donegal.

Brian and another man were climbing the Poisoned Glen on Saturday afternoon when the tragic events unfolded.

Brian, aged in his 50s, suffered fatal injuries in a fall which has been described as a “catastrophic accident” by rescue services. The second man, also aged in his 50s, was airlifted to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Mr. Campbell is survived by his devoted wife Donna and their loving children, Caomhán and Nicole.

His wake is commencing on Tuesday 23rd April from 11:00am to 10:00pm and on Wednesday from 11:00am to 10:00pm.

The funeral service will take place on Thursday, April 25th, at St. Mary’s Church, Creggan.

The procession will leave Mr Campbell’s home at 42 Woodbrook West at 10:20 am for the 11:00 am service. Interment afterwards in the City Cemetery.

Donegal Mountain Rescue volunteers have shared their condolences following the tragic incident.

The team outlined the details of the call-out, which involved a difficult and technical extraction with the support of Rescue 118.

A spokesperson said: “On Saturday 20th April 2024, DMRT (Donegal Mountain Rescue Team) were tasked at 13:24 hours by AGS Galway to Poison Glenn and were put on full stand-by. Once more information was obtained, it was established that there had been a catastrophic accident involving two climbers, one of which had not survived.

“Rescue 118 was tasked to the scene as the DMRT hasty team made their way to the rendezvous point. As members of the team approached the casualty’s location, Rescue 118 was already on scene and, after a difficult and technical extraction, airlifted the second casualty to Letterkenny Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“The team’s rope technicians proceeded to set up two complex rope systems in order to recover the remaining casualty. They manoeuvred the stretcher back to the RV point where AGS and NAS were waiting.

“The team was stood down at 22:59 hours.

“Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased.

“We wish to express our sincerest thanks to everyone involved in this difficult and hugely technical incident, including Rescue 118, An Garda Síochána and National Ambulance Service (NAS).”

Mind Games: Dooher says Donegal are “favourites by a country mile”

$

And so the mind games begin.

Jim McGuinness and Brian Dooher know each other well after decades of crossing paths both on and off the field.

Now the respective Donegal and Tyrone bosses come head-to-head in next Sunday’s Ulster Championship semi-final.

The game will mean a quick return to Celtic Park in Derry for Donegal fans with the game throwing in at 2pm.

The Tyrone vet has been quick to downplay his side’s chances after they limped across the line against Cavan after extra time at Kingspan Breffni Park last Sunday.

In fact, Dooher claims Donegal, after their gutsy display against Derry, are “favourites by a country mile” to win Sunday’s game.

Dooher said “There’s no words could do it justice, how good they were.

“It was as good a performance as I have seen. They just dismantled Derry basically who were twice two in a row Ulster champions, League champions.

“That’s what they did, and in some style. They have phenomenal pace, phenomenal work rate. It was a great match to watch actually.

“To be fair to Derry, give them credit too, but Donegal’s goals were real exhibition stuff.

“Jim was here – I’m not sure he’ll go away too worried. Let’s be honest about it.

“It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that performance is nowhere near what we need for Donegal. We go in and Donegal will be big favourites by a country mile.

“You know what? We’re still there and we’ll go and give a good account of ourselves. Getting bodies recovered will be the big focus.”

Dooher has been a critic of the heavy schedule faced by county players with this week a real pressure point for Tyrone and Donegal.

“There’s some wiser men than me sorting (it) out,” he said

“I’ve said it all year – the player welfare is not there. The players are the last thing they consider at this time.

“What they’re expecting of players who have to get up and do a day’s work tomorrow. Next week it’s crazy but that’s the way it is. I’m not the man putting my body on the line out there, it’s those young boys who are giving everything as they have done all year.

“They need a wee bit of respect in the middle of all this. That’s something that’s sadly lacking at the minute.

“They are learning and they won the (Cavan) game for us. That’s the long and the short of it.

“They made the difference and got us over the line and we look forward to them doing it more often.
“We are in the Ulster semi-final.

“The performance wasn’t what it should have been or what we expected but the ultimate objective was to be there. Time will tell how much the extra time will take out of us.”

Time and perhaps another McGuinness tactical plan will tell on Sunday afternoon next.

Woman admits stealing €280 of clothes from Letterkenny shops

A woman has pleaded guilty to stealing almost over €280 worth of clothes from shops in Letterkenny.

Martina Cassidy appeared before Letterkenny District Court, where she pleaded guilty to three incidents of theft from River Island and H&M.

A probation report has been sought for the 56-year-old, of Inch View, Hazelbank, Derry.

Sergeant Jim Collins outlined the charges against Cassidy.

At 5pm on May 20, 2023, Cassidy entered River Island at Letterkenny Retail Park and stole €60 worth of clothes, including trousers and a top. The incident was captured on CCTV, Cassidy was arrested and she made full admissions.

The court heard that the items were not returned.

On September 19, 2023, Cassidy again entered River Island and after taking nine items into the changing rooms she exited carrying six items. Cassidy left the store with three items, valued at €173 which she had placed into a bag and these were not recovered.

On October 8, 2023, Cassidy stole two pairs of green pyjamas, worth a combined €50, from H&M, also at Letterkenny Retail Park.

Cassidy, who has no previous convictions, spoke only to plead guilty to the charges.

Mr Frank Dorrian, solicitor for Cassidy, said his client is a 56-year-old mother-of-two who was working as a carer for her mother and sister.

Mr Dorrian told the court that Cassidy spent some time in residential care as a result of emotional trauma following the death of her mum earlier in 2023.

“She assures me that there are no previous and she has no pattern of this,” Mr Dorrian said.

“She didn’t do this for profit. It was irrational and she assures me to assure the court that there will be no further offence.”

Mr Dorrian said this had been a ‘very salutary experience’ for client. “She has been very frightened,” he said, “and that brings with it a certain penalty.”

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham said that the best opportunity she could afford Cassidy was to direct the preparation of a probation and welfare report. The matter was adjourned until September.
