State-of-the-art seaweed factory harvests success in Downings

The Seaweed Company Green Turtle has celebrated the official opening of its Downings facility, representing the exciting expansion of its Irish operations.

The largest seaweed farm in Ireland exists in the pristine waters of Mulroy Bay. The Downings processing plant has been built to cut, dry and package the freshly harvested produce.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue was on hand to cut the seaweed ribbon on Friday.

Minister McConalogue said the facility was an extremely positive step for the local community and the aquaculture sector as a whole.

The Donegal Minister commended the company owners Joost Wouters, Stefan Krann, and Lorraine Gallagher for their hard work and dedication to the seafood sector.

“Your investment in innovation and this facility reflects your passion and strong commitment to the industry, and indeed the local community here in Donegal. It is always a pleasure to support innovation in the seafood sector. Even more so, to support an enterprise such as the Seaweed Company Green Turtle which is seeking to realise the potential of seaweed as a cornerstone of sustainable aquaculture,” he said.

“Seaweed is a highly versatile product, yet its potential remains underdeveloped. Ireland, with its rich maritime heritage and vast coastline, is uniquely positioned to lead in seaweed production. We have the resources and, as showcased here today, the expertise and the passion to drive the industry forward. By leveraging those assets and talents Ireland has the potential to establish itself as a frontrunner in the European seaweed market,” Minister McConalogue added.

The Seaweed Company cultivates the edible seaweed Alaria as a food source. The tasty Alaria forms the main ingredient of the SeaMeat® product, a blend that is being used to create hybrid meat products, such as burgers with 25% less meat.

Minister McConalogue added: “The history of seaweed is very much intertwined with so many parts of our culture. That has become less so in recent recent years like so many other things. It was a big part of our heritage for a very good reason because it is a wonderful product. Like so many other aspects of our lives, we are rediscovering the wisdom of the people who came before us and bringing that back into our lives.

“And as we look towards ramping up the industry to scaled production, ongoing support will assist the sector in realising its full potential value by 2030. As Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, I remain committed to securing the maximum support for the sector,” he commented.

For 2000 years visitors from all over the world have been attracted to Sorrento, with its breathtaking sunsets, fragrances of orange and lemon orchards, landscapes of hills and valleys adorned with vineyards and olive groves.

Situated on Italy’s west coast, in the Campania region, it’s one of our most popular destinations and easily one of Europe’s most beautiful spots; Sorento is the perfect base for an Italy holiday, as it offers an opportunity for relaxation and to see some of the most famous Italian sights.

Check out our suggestions for things to do in Sorrento, as well as day trip ideas, and experience this stunning part of Italy.

1. Explore Sorrento Town

The old town of Sorrento is full of character, a labyrinth of atmospheric cobbled streets, filled with interesting shops, characterful bars, historic churches, pavement cafés and tiny alleyways. Some of the highlights of Sorrento town include the cloister of San Francesco, Sorrento Cathedral, the Correale Museum and the original fishing village of Marina Grande.

2. Take a Pompeii Tour

You could easily spend hours exploring the magnificent ancient Roman town of Pompeii. Learn how time was frozen in the year 79AD when the city was buried and largely preserved under ash after the eruption of the mighty Mount Vesuvius. This should definitely be on your travel list and we recommend having a guide show you this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site

3. Visit Capri

The enchanting island of Capri is renowned for its beauty and clear blue sea! The boat trip to Capri from Sorrento port takes approximately 25 minutes.  Wander through the charming Capri town, discover the Augustus Gardens, spend some time relaxing on the beach or cool off with a leisurely swim! During your free time and depending on the weather conditions, you could visit the famous Blue Grotto, a sea cave and one of Italy’s famous natural attractions. It’s only accessible by a rowing boat and it was used by Emperor Tiberius as his private swimming pool. Although visitors are banned from swimming in the cave for safety reasons, as soon as you enter you’ll be dazzled by the glow of the turquoise waters.

4. Experience The Amalfi Coast

Possibly one of the most scenic drives in Europe, the Amalfi Coast is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and pastel coloured villages, including Positano, perched over the turquoise Mediterranean Sea, Amalfi which houses a beautiful Medieval Cathedral and Ravello with its historic town centre.

5. Uncover Positano

Explore Positano, the Amalfi Coasts’ most photogenic town! Enjoy the beautiful colourful houses as they tumble down the cascading cliffs leading into the ocean. Top off your trip by taking in the enchanting views of Positano at sunset. With a cocktail in hand, it will be hard to draw your eyes away from the colourful skyline and glistening lights!

6. Discover Herculaneum

For history enthusiasts, if you have some free time during your stay in Sorrento, we suggest going to Herculaneum, an ancient Roman town which was also destroyed by Mount Vesuvius at the same time as Pompeii.

7. Hike Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius is one of the few active volcanoes left in Europe, its last eruption was in 1944. Although infamous for destroying Ancient Roman cities, it’s now a national park full of great hiking trails, where you can trek to its crater. For those feeling less energetic, you can get a shuttle bus to the top where you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the Bay of Naples and Pompeii.

8. See The Bay of Naples

From canary yellow to tropical turquoise, the Bay of Naples is a sight to behold with its array of colourful houses dotting the coastline! You can easily visit Naples by taking a ferry or train from Sorrento. The city of Naples itself is also a picture-perfect paradise with rows of quaint colourful shops, charming cafés and authentic restaurants waiting to be explored. Make sure to try a pizza as this classic Italian dish was invented in Naples!

9. Experience Sorrento cuisine

The Sorrento region boasts some of the best pizza in Italy. The Pizza Margherita, a hot flatbread topped with red tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and basil to represent the Italian flag is a must-taste! Pasta or risotto with fresh seafood are also popular and delicious. The Campania region produces excellent wines, including the fruity white Greco di Tufo and the lighter Fiano di Avellino, while red wine lovers will enjoy a glass of Taurasi. A chilled glass of Limoncello, made from juicy local lemons, is a great way to end a meal!

The Sorrento Peninsula is the perfect location for a touring holiday, with easy access to the spectacular Amalfi Drive, the charming town of Sorrento, the romantic island of Capri and the ancient ruins of Pompeii. Donegal children raised more than €9,400 for two charities as part of Early Childhood Ireland’s 20th National Pyjama Day fundraising event.

Nationwide, over 1,830 children and educators in 39 early years and school age care settings put on their cosiest pyjamas to raise vital funds in support of children across Ireland in November of last year.

A total of over €285,000 (€287,611.52) was donated to two child-centred projects. They are autism charity AsIAm’s ‘Child and Family Support Programme’, which provides group-based support and advocacy for autistic children and their families; and a new ‘Eco-Emotions’ project for Early Years and School Age Care educators in Donegal. Developed by Early Childhood Ireland in response to feedback from educators, the programme will support children’s emotional health and develop a sense of environmental responsibility.

Teresa Heeney, CEO of Early Childhood Ireland said: “Since its inception, National Pyjama Day activities have raised over €4.3 million for selected projects and charities. As we mark two decades of Pyjama Day magic, we’re delighted to see the ripple effect of kindness reaching children nationwide.”

A young boy who was attacked by a Jack Russell dog while out playing on his bike has been awarded €20,000 in damages.

The boy and his parents appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court in Co Donegal where the Junior Infant Ruling was heard by Judge John Aylmer.

The court was told that the boy was aged 8 at the time of the incident in June 2018.

He was out cycling with friends in the Burtonport area when the was set upon by the dog.

The boy suffered bite marks on his left arm and also scratches on his back.

The boy was treated by local Doctor Dara McEniff for soft tissue injuries but there was no serious scarring.

Barrister for the young boy, now aged 13, Mr Sean McGee, said the victim had suffered psychological issues as a result of the dog attack.

He became anxious and would not go outdoors as much as he he developed a fear of dogs which caused him to hyperventilate and also vomit on occasions.

His fear of dogs extended to include the family’s two pet dogs and he even missed going out trick or treating with his friends at Halloween for fear of coming across dogs on the street.

Although six sessions of counselling had been recommended for the boy, Mr McGee told the court that they had not been taken up.

He added that the boy’s father had taken it upon himself to get the boy “out and about” again.

Mr McGee added that having met with the boy’s parents again, he said the offer of €20,000 was a “fair enough assessment.”

Judge John Aylmer said the offer was reasonable in all the circumstances and told Mr McGee he was entitled to his costs.

The portrait of the former Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Donegal-born William Hay, was unveiled today in Parliament Buildings.

The DUP peer, also known as Lord Hay of Ballyore, was born near Milford.

He made headlines earlier this year when he won his 20 year battle to be granted a British passport.

He also is a prominent member of the Orange Order and Apprentice Boys of Derry.

Painted in oil on canvas by local artist, Stephen Johnston, the portrait of Lord Hay will join those of his predecessors, Eileen Bell and Lord Alderdice on public display in the Great Hall in Parliament Buildings. Today’s unveiling ceremony was performed by the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Edwin Poots MLA.

Mr Poots said he was delighted to unveil the official portrait of Lord Hay in Parliament Buildings.

“Lord Hay was the first Speaker to be elected by the Assembly itself and is the Assembly’s longest serving Speaker, in post from 2007 – 2014,” he said.

“During his tenure, he was passionate about opening up Parliament Buildings to the public and spearheaded a number of important initiatives to encourage local people to actively engage with their Assembly. It is therefore very fitting that his portrait will now go on public display in the Great Hall.”

Father-of-two who kicked man in head 18 times is jailed for two years

A young father-of-two who kicked a man 18 times in the head has been jailed for two years.

John ‘Nipper’ Sweeney appeared before Letterkenny Circuit Court in Co Donegal following the attack at Burnside Apartments on September 29th, 2022.

Horrific footage of the attack was broadcast in court as part of CCTV evidence which showed the accused, aged 29, repeatedly kicking his victim in the head.

The court was told that Sweeney stopped after somebody shouted “the shades (Gardai) are coming” before he returned and began kicking his victim again.

Detective Garda Declan O’Keefe gave evidence of the incident.

He told how Gardai encountered traffic at a standstill at Lower Main Street in Letterkenny while an incident took place at Burnside Apartments at 4.20pm.

A number of people were present and Gardai noticed a man trying to stand up who had cuts to his head.

Another man who they knew as John ‘Nipper’ Sweeney, who was drunk and unsteady on his feet with blood on his mouth and forehead was shouting at Gardai “Arrest me. He assaulted me.”

Detective O’Keefe told how video footage from what had happened had been uploaded and had gone viral on social media.

However, a vacuum had been created after the incident as no complaints had been made.

The CCTV footage showed Sweeney and another man fighting while others were also getting involved in the melee.

Sweeney was initially arrested on a public order charge and finally pleaded guilty to a Section 3 assault on the other man although he claimed it was in self defence.

He claimed the other man had started the row out of the blue.

The court was told that the other man is also before the courts but was not engaging with Gardai to provide a victim impact statement.

The court was told that Sweeney, a 29-year-old father-of-two, has 69 previous convictions but just one for assault.

The other convictions are for public order, theft, burglary, criminal damage, drugs, production of an article and road traffic.

Sweeney’s barrister, Mr Peter Nolan, said that when interviewed by Gardai, the accused claimed the other man attacked him first by biting him on the shoulder and punching him in the face.

Mr Nolan said that before this incident between 2016 and 2022, Sweeney had “kept his nose clean and his head down” and it was not until this “appalling event” he went into custody and did not apply for bail.

Sweeney addressed the court by reading out a prepared letter.

He apologised to the court and to the other man involved saying that at the time he had lost his partner and his kids and that his younger brother was in a coma.

He added that he felt he was assaulted first and had a right to defend himself but went too far.

“I was doing well and as happy as a man can be when I lost everything,” he said.

While in prison on remand, he awoke on January 26th, 2023 to find his cellmate and childhood friend dead and that this “opened my eyes that there is more to life.”

He said that for the past seventeen months he has had time to think about what he has done and he was asking the court to give him a chance saying he wanted to say sorry to everyone he has offended including the other man involved in the row.

He has not since his two children, aged 5 and 4, since he has gone into custody and admits that his attack could have caused the other man a much more severe injury.

The court was also told that he was impacted by the death of his father through suicide in 2016.

Judge John Aylmer asked the extent of the victim’s injuries and a picture of the man was handed into court which showed severe swelling to his head and face.

Mr Nolan said that it was clear from the CCTV footage that the other man involved in the row caused the original assault but that it does not excuse the level of violence used in retaliation.

He said a Probation report on his client said he now had insight into the matter and although he has numerous previous convictions, it was notable that only one was for assault.

On a personal level he began drinking at 13 and by 16 he was taking cannabis and cocaine and had also left school at 16 having completed his Junior Cert but has never held full-time employment.

He believed he had a right to defend himself until he got legal advice and he is now doing well in Castlerea Prison.

Mr Nolan added that it was undoubtedly a serious offence but asked Judge Aylmer to give whatever credit he could to his client.

Passing sentence Judge Aylmer said it was the court’s view that the incident was at the upper end of the scale saying the video footage told its own tale of the vicious nature of the attack.

“It is miraculous that no more injury was suffered,” Judge Aylmer said. “That is entirely fortuitous given the very violent nature of the kicking.”

He said that while it was clear the victim was the aggressor from the outset, Sweeney accepts that he used force that was greater than necessary and that before mitigation the attack merited a sentence of four years in prison.

In mitigation, he said Sweeney was cooperative and it was also relevant that while he had numerous previous convictions only one was for assault.

Judge Aylmer said he noted that the accused had not offended from 2016 until 2022 and was anxious to turn his life around before committing a dangerous driving incident and then getting involved in this incident.

He noted Sweeney was genuinely remorseful and was also anxious to get on with his rehabilitation and to eventually get employment.

He noted he had encountered some adversity in his life through the death of his father by suicide and also the death of his close schoolfriend in prison.

For these factors, Judge Aylmer said he was reducing the four years sentence to one of three years in prison.

And to give him encouragement for further rehabilitation as had been suggested by the Probation Service, Judge Aylmer said he proposed to suspend the final 12 months of the sentence on condition that he be of good behaviour, go under the supervision of the Probation Services and abstain from alcohol and drugs.

He also ordered that all credit be given to Sweeney for the time he has already served in prison.

Two major Greenways will be officially opened in Donegal this Friday.

The completion of the Lifford to Castlefinn Greenway and the Muff to Quigley’s Point Greenway are set to have a hugely positive impact on the economy of both areas, according to Donegal minister, Charlie McConalogue.

Speaking ahead of Friday’s official opening of the two local greenways by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine said both will provide huge benefits for the Donegal public.

He said “Transport Infrastructure Ireland has allocated significant funding in recent years for the provision of greenways in Donegal. It’s fantastic to see the Lifford to Castlefinn Greenway, which cost €3.6 million, and the Muff to Quigley’s Point Greenway, which cost €6 million, fully finished now.”

“There are massive benefits to having greenways and the standard of finish of both routes is second to none.

“The provision of more greenways in our county is the way to go and there is no doubt that the opening of these two multi-million euro projects will have a hugely positive impact on both localities.

“These greenways will provide a safe corridor for walkers and cyclists between neighbouring towns and villages.

“They are invaluable tourist attractions and will also serve to promote a healthier way of living.”

St. Eunan’s National School, Raphoe and Scoil Cholmcille National School, Newtowncunningham Safe Routes to School will also be officially opened by Minister Chambers on Friday.

“The projects in Raphoe and Newtowcunningham are initiatives I know the local people in the area were keen to have put in place. They will add greatly to the safety of roads users who travel to and from the schools on a daily basis.

“Great credit goes to the staff of Donegal County Council for their efforts on all four projects, and to the local public representatives, community groups and organisations who have lent their support,” Minister McConalogue said.

This week Fáilte Ireland will showcase Donegal’s world-class golf courses to a group of sports media professionals.

Titled ‘Swing into Scenic Bliss,’ this two-day event brings together a group of Irish golfing journalists to experience the unparalleled beauty, hospitality, and golfing excellence the county has to offer. It is being organised in partnership with Donegal Airport, Donegal Tourism and Emerald Airlines.

David Leonard, Wild Atlantic Way Programme Officer at Fáilte Ireland commented:

“This collaboration represents an exciting opportunity to showcase Donegal’s exceptional golf courses and hospitality to a distinguished group of sports journalists. We are thrilled to partner with Donegal Airport, Donegal Tourism, and Emerald Airlines to offer journalists a firsthand experience of the beauty and world-class amenities that await golf enthusiasts in Donegal together with its enhanced accessibility for travellers.”

Golf tourism, he added, is extremely valuable to the Irish economy and is estimated to be worth more than €300 million annually. Fáilte Ireland’s research shows a golf visitor typically spends three times more than the average leisure tourist with most of the spend going directly into local economies on non-golf expenditure such as accommodation, transport and food and beverage.

The media event will feature guided tours of Donegal’s premier golf courses at Cruit Island Golf Club, Narin & Portnoo Links, Rosapenna Golf Resort and Portsalon Golf Club.

Sarah Nolan, Head of Tourism at Donegal Tourism said:

“We are delighted to welcome these sports journalists to Donegal and provide them with an immersive experience that highlights the unique appeal of our region. From breathtaking coastal views to challenging courses designed by world-renowned architects, Donegal offers an unforgettable golfing experience for players of all levels.”

Pauline Sweeney, Marketing Manager, Donegal Airport said:

“I am excited to welcome this group to Donegal Airport before setting out to explore Donegal’s world-class golf courses and sharing their experiences with their readers. This initiative presents a fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on Donegal’s golfing treasures and inspire enthusiasts to discover the beauty of this remarkable region.”
