Donegal minister, Charlie McConalogue, visited Lurgybrack NS in Letterkenny where he shared his experiences of his recent trip to Africa.

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine spoke to fourth, fifth, and sixth-class pupils about his own time at school, and about his career as a politician.

Minister McConalogue recalled his week-long visit to Sudan in March and explained that he used the opportunity to see how the funding provided by his department is supporting communities on the ground.

He told the pupils that much of the population relies on agriculture to feed their families and for their income.

During his trip, he announced that €30 million would be allocated to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to respond to the mounting humanitarian needs in the Horn of Africa.

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, pictured with school principal, Annraoi Chivers.

The region is facing a prolonged period of extreme need because of drought, conflict, and the ongoing impacts of climate change.

His talk to the local pupils fitted in with Lurgybrack NS’s green school theme – global citizenship and energy. The subject looks at energy use in a global setting and at the UN’s global goals to end poverty and protect the planet.

Green Schools Ireland recently launched ‘Global Goals Week’ which involved schools from Ireland, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and Dubai meeting online to allow students to share their opinions on the importance of the global goals.

Speaking after his visit to the Letterkenny primary school, Minister McConalogue said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the interaction with the pupils. They asked plenty of relevant and interesting questions and showed a great level of knowledge in the areas of food, agriculture and sustainability.”

Special schools in Donegal to benefit from increased teaching hours

Two special schools in Letterkenny have been allocated extra post-primary teaching hours for the new school year in September.

St. Bernadette’s and Little Angels are included in the €11 million fund for support for special schools announced in Budget 2024.

The fund provides for 100 teaching posts across 88 special schools with post-primary aged students.

Over 50% of the students in special schools nationwide are aged 13 years and over.

The additional post-primary teaching posts will facilitate special schools to deliver a greater range of national curriculum subjects at junior and senior cycle, providing access to programmes that are age and stage-appropriate, and that build on individual strengths and promote progression and transition.

The additional posts have been converted into a bank of post-primary teaching hours (co-operation hours) and will be allocated to schools on a pro-rata basis, in accordance with the number of students aged 13 and over in the school.

Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion, Hildegarde Naughton T.D., said: “Budget 2024 makes the biggest-ever commitment, in real, financial and percentage terms, to students with special educational needs and their families. The detail of the targeted measures for special schools announced today is designed to help support the 9,000 students in special schools to thrive at school and realise the full extent of their potential.

“I want to acknowledge in particular the support of Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI) and each of the Education and Training Board (ETB)s nationwide who, together with the National Council for Special Education (NCSE), have partnered with my Department to support the delivery of the additional post-primary posts to special schools.”

Minister Naughton added: “The provision of these additional post-primary teaching posts will also assist special schools in being ready to offer the new Senior Cycle Level 1 and Level 2 modules which are currently in development as part of Senior Cycle redevelopment. These new posts and curriculum pathways at Senior Cycle will also support students in our special schools to transition to available further education and training opportunities and employment opportunities after school.”

Calls mount for toilet facilities at Errigal

Hikers at Errigal deserve better facilities than ‘spending a penny stone age style’ – that’s the view of local election candidate Mick Harkin.

The Aontú candidate for Glenties has called for investment into a permanent toilet structure near the foot of Errigal mountain.

Pre-pandemic, it was estimated there were over 15,000 visitors to Errigal per year. A growing interest in outdoor activities and the new €630,000 path has boosted visitor numbers further.

But no public conveniences at the site leaves many visitors in a predicament when nature calls.

Harkin said: “Down through the decades, tens of thousands of hikers have climbed Donegal’s highest mountain. Yet here we are in the 21st century in Donegal and still expect the massive volume of tourists to endure dire toilet facilities on par with what the first Stone Age settlers experienced.”

He said that a long term strategic plan should be made to maximise the tourist potential of Errigal rather than portable toilets.

“It would be far better to invest in a permanent centre similar to the one at Fanad Lighthouse, incorporating a small tourism shop with tearoom, toilets and possibly basic first aid provision for hill walkers,” he said.

Mr Harkin added: “Also any building must be constructed with local materials to blend into the natural topography, alleviating any environmental concerns and have little impact on the scenery of which Donegal is renowned.”

He added that the enhanced facilities would entice even more visitors from Glenveagh National Park to see the iconic peak.

“Let’s think big,” Harkin said. “Errigal attracts visitors all year round who feed the local economy. They deserve more fitting facilities and Donegal deserves this type of investment. I will continue to press Donegal County Council to improve the distinct lack of toilet amenities and parking spaces at the foot of Errigal.”

A statement from Donegal County Council it is working on a plan to improve the visitor experience in Dunlewey and there are no temporary solutions currently planned.

A spokesperson said: “Donegal County Council working with the local community and other stakeholders are due to shortly commence a Masterplan for Dunlewey and its wider area in relation to the overall visitor experience and its relationship with the local community. The masterplan will also assess the existing visitor management arrangements and make recommendations in relation to the visitor management facilities required to accommodate increasing visitor numbers.

“There are no interim measures proposed at this time, however the matter will be kept under review.”

Donegal allocated €2.8 million for Local Improvement Scheme (LIS)

Donegal has been allocated almost €2.8 million for repairs and improvement works on private rural roads and laneways under the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS).

The scheme, which is administered locally by Donegal County Council, is to receive €2,588,444 as well as further €200,000 for islands.

The allocation of funds is for works to be carried out across 2024 and 2025 on roads not normally maintained by the local authorities.

Minister Heather Humphreys said she is amending the LIS criteria so that only one herd number will be required for a valid LIS application.

Minister Humphreys said she is delighted to announce record funding of €40 million for the LIS nationwide.

“LIS is a critical source of funding for small non-public roads not normally maintained by local authorities,” she explained.

“It’s a fantastic scheme under which the homeowners and farmers who use the lane make a small local contribution and the government provides the balance of funding to ensure that people can access their homes and farms on good quality surfaces.”

Minister Humphreys continued:

“I am also amending the LIS criteria so that only one herd number will be required for a valid LIS application. Up to now, two herd numbers were required to be using the lane. I am making this change in response to feedback I have received from local representatives and it will ensure that more families can now qualify for the scheme.

“I am also aware that Local Authorities need to carry out LIS works when weather conditions are favorable. In recognition of this and in order to help local authorities better plan their work programmes, I am providing greater flexibility so that Local Authorities can use their allocation throughout 2024 and 2025.”

Gardaí are appealing for information after two historic graveyards were vandalised at the weekend.

The first incident occurred at the ancient Raymochy Abbey site near Manorcunningham some time between 6pm on Friday and noon on Saturday.

Vandals damaged a number of headstones as well as a sign (main pic) erected by the local Raymochy Historical Society. Garda Niall Maguire said the ‘beautiful, ancient’ graveyard is maintained by the local community who dedicated a lot of their time to its upkeep.

Meanwhile, two headstones were smashed in the graveyard at St Eunan’s Cathedral, Raphoe, sometime between 6.15 pm on Thursday and 9:30 am on Friday.

It was the second attack on the same graveyard this year.

However, Gda Maguire believes the Ramochy and Raphoe incidents are not connected.

“We appeal to anybody who can assist in any way with this investigation to do so by contacting Gardaí in Letterkenny on 074-9167100 or The Garda Confidential Line may also be contacted on 1800 666 111,” he said.

Early kick-off for Harps v Cork as floodlights issue unresolved

Finn Harps have confirmed that Friday’s clash with Cork City FC will kick-off at the earlier time of 6pm due to the ongoing floodlight issues at Finn Park.

“Work is ongoing to resolve the issue as soon as possible for the weeks ahead,” a club spokesperson said.

Earlier this month, the home game against UCD was also brought forward due to the same issue.

“There have been several issues with floodlights at Finn Park in recent years and the club has not been in a position to access the grant for an LED system, but continue to pursue this avenue,” a spokesperson said at the time.

“The club ordered and paid for components before the season, but were informed late on that the order could not be fulfilled. Further efforts to source the needed components saw a delivery today, but the wrong type was sent to us meaning the test this evening failed.”

The spokesperson added that it continues to be a huge challenge to ensure the facilities at Finn Park meet licensing criteria and they are very grateful to their volunteers and local tradespeople for their ongoing efforts.

They added “This regrettable situation is further evidence that the move to a new stadium is vital for the survival of the club.”

Boy who burned arm on campsite heater in France awarded €10,000

A young Co Donegal boy who burned his arm while holidaying with his family in France has been awarded €10,000.

The boy, now aged 7, was almost 2 at the time of the incident.

The child and his parents appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court where the court heard an offer had been made to the boy’s family.

The court heard the boy was staying at a Eurocamp cabin with his family in Brittany on June 17th, 2018.

The boy was running around the cabin when he rubbed his arm off a gas heater and suffered a burn.

The family returned from holiday and attended their local GP, Dr Jarlath Duffy.

Dr Duffy treated the wound and prescribed cream for the burn.

The court was told that the boy returned to Dr Duffy a year later for an update and an examination of the burn showed a faint discolouration of the scarred area.

However, the examination also showed the child had a full grip using his left hand, had a full range of elbow extension and there were no psychological issues.

Barrister for the young boy and his family, Mr Peter Nolan, told Judge John Aylmer that there were no specific monetary guidelines for compensation in the case of burns.

Mr Nolan said there was a concern that liability could be apportioned to the parents as contributory negligence had been alleged by the other side.

“Rather than risk any order, it would be wise to accept the offer,” Mr Nolan said.

Judge Aylmer said it was fortunate that the recovery of the boy has been ‘excellent’ and recommended the acceptance of €10,000.

However, he said he and his client were happy with the offer saying there was no residual scarring.

Judge Aylmer said he was happy to recommend the offer which included circuit court costs.

Mica Action Group says critical research is being ignored

The Mica Action Group said it is ‘inexcusable’ that the Housing Minister and the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) have not acted on scientific research into the defective concrete issue in Donegal.

Campaigners have today called for remediation recommendations to be reviewed to allow for the replacement of foundations.

They are also urging the authorities to acknowledge the primary cause of the defective concrete as internal sulphate attack, rather than the IS 465’s hypothesis for concrete decay in Donegal being mica freeze/thaw.

The most recent findings come from research commissioned by the GSI into the issue of defective concrete in Ireland.

MAG says the research results are undeniable.

The group has today written to both Darragh O’Brien Minister for Housing and Geraldine Larkin CEO of the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) to ask if they are deliberately withholding critical information.

MAG recently obtained a statement as a result of a freedom of information request showing that the Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) sent a statement to the NSAI in the 4th quarter of 2023, concerning research results which they regarded of as “sufficient importance to identify in advance of final receipt of outcomes”.

According to MAG, the contents of the statement reveal that all research partners agree that their scientific research evidence the primary cause of the defective concrete issue in Donegal as internal sulphate attack as a result of excessive pyrrhotite in the concrete aggregate. It goes on to state the pattern of building damage within Donegal properties are consistent with test results from properties in Mayo and are characteristic of blocks affected by internal sulphate attack (ISA).

The statement also details that “pyrrhotite has been consistently identified within the strip foundations examined from affected buildings” and that “liberated pyrrhotite identified within the strip foundations shows early evidence of oxidation…. indicating incipient ISA. This is considerably less advanced than in the rising wall but does pose a long term risk.”

Chair of MAG Lisa Hone states, “We sought information about the status of the on-going research via FOIs as we are increasingly exasperated and concerned about seeing homeowners in Donegal pushed towards inappropriate remediation recommendations, particularly partial remediations, based on the now discredited IS465 as opposed to the latest science. Remediation decisions have to be science led to ensure that homes will not fail again and that this issue is eliminated from every aspect of homeowners’ lives.”

Ms Hone adds: “The research partners are all clearly saying homes in Donegal are cracking and crumbling for exactly the same reason as in Mayo, internal sulphate attack not because of freeze/thaw. And despite Government expert opinion saying otherwise, the research has revealed that there is a risk to poured concrete foundations – not to act on such clear information with immediate effect is negligent and reckless.”

Sarah Jessica Parker has revealed another classical connection to Ireland through her love for RTÉ radio.

The ‘Sex and The City’ actress was tuning into the serene sounds of RTE Lyric fm yesterday when she decided to recommend it to the world.

Posting a screenshot of Lyric Through the Night on Instagram, she wrote: “Nice. I try to remember. Cause it’s always so lovely. #rteradio”.

A post shared by SJP (@sarahjessicaparker)

And just like that… her Irish followers were over the moon.

“Best radio station EVER,” replied influencer James Kavanagh.

Many more fans took to her Instagram to make their own radio recommendations for Marty in the Morning and John Creedon.

No doubt the musical discovery was made during one of SJP’s trips to Donegal, where she and her husband Matthew Broderick have a holiday home in coastal Kilcar.

Over the years, SJP has revealed a fondness for many other Irish products, including crisps, Guinness from the local pubs and Kerrygold butter.

Last week, during the ‘Ruthie’s Table 4’ podcast for foodies, she said she uses the classic Irish butter on her spuds which turns her food into “heaven”.

“So, I use Kerrygold butter and just a touch of olive oil so the butter doesn’t burn. There’s so much unsalted butter in London, it’s kind of hard to find the salted.

“You can taste all the fat, you can smell the fat. Put them in the pan with olive oil and salt and pepper and ah – heaven.

“We are crazy about potatoes and butter,” she added.

Donegal will be cheering on two hopefuls in the Glór Tíre country music final tonight as Chelsea Evans and Jason McCahill compete for the opportunity of a lifetime.

The final will be broadcast live on TG4 at 9.30pm and will see five finalists vying for the coveted title.

Chelsea from Dunfanaghy has described her Glór Tíre journey as “surreal” and “overwhelming”, but also “the best experience and hopefully it’s not over yet”.

The young singer, who only turned 20 last month, but who already has an album and two EPs to her name, has impressed with her performances of songs by Lisa McHugh and Brett Young among others.

Jason from Ramelton has been singing in hotels and pubs since the age of 15, so to get the chance to perform and experience the show has been a dream come true.

Jason won the public vote to earn his place in the final and is excited to “go for the big one” this week.

Being mentored for Glór Tíre by rising Irish Country star, Claudia Buckley, along with strong solo performances of John Denver’s ‘Thank God I’m A Country Boy’ and Randy Travis’s ‘Three Wooden Crosses’, revealed a lively and engaging performer, with a strong and natural country voice. For the Grand Final, Jason promises to “go out with a bang no matter what”.

Eddie Rowley, Jó Ní Chéide agus Caitriona Ní Shuilleabháin are the judges seat for the Season 20 Grand Final. TR Dallas will also be treating viewers to a song.
