McGuinness makes just one change for starting line-up against Tyrone

Donegal manager Jim McGuinness has made just one change to his starting line-up for Sunday’s crunch Ulster Championship semi-final clash with Tyrone.

Captain Patrick McBrearty returns in place of Aaron Doherty to an otherwise unchanged starting fifteen.

The Kilcar man was due to the start last Saturday’s game against Derry but was benched only to come on in the second half to give Donegal a mental boost as they cruised to victory at Celtic Park.

McGuinness is hoping a fully-fit McBrearty can strengthen his side even more as they face Brian Dooher’s side with a throw-in time of 2pm for the game.

The following is the line-up:

Popular Letterkenny teachers close their books after 57 years of service

Two hugely popular Letterkenny-based teachers have closed their schoolbooks for the final time after a combined 57 years of service.

Between them John McClean and Bernard Doherty have seen some major changes down through the years at Errigal College and indeed other schools.

Both have watched as hundreds (if not thousands!) of pupils passed through their science and wood technology departments at the school at Windyhall.

And with those years of service came many stories of various kinds.

Many of these stories were recounted when colleagues, former colleagues, friends and family gathered at the Radisson Blu in Letterkenny recently to say farewell to the pair.

Bernard, known for his years of teaching Woodwork, Graphics, and PLCs, officially retired on January 7, 2024, culminating 34 years of exemplary service. The majority of his tenure was spent at Errigal College having joined Donegal ETB in 1994. Doherty’s contributions extended beyond the classroom, actively engaging in initiatives such as the Student Council, First Aid programmes, TUI involvement, and promoting outdoor pursuits for students. As he embarks on retirement, he eagerly anticipates quality time with his wife, Frances, and their children Catherine and Cathal, with plans for memorable skiing trips ahead.

John will be renowned for his teaching of Science, Chemistry, and PLCs, and marked his official retirement on August 24, 2023, after 23 years at Errigal College, commencing his journey with the school in 1998. Mr. McClean’s impact resonated throughout the school, notably through his leadership as Head of the Science department, his involvement in the State Examinations, and his integral role in celebrating the achievements of Leaving Cert students annually. As he enters this new chapter, John looks forward to exploring Europe and beyond with his wife, Caroline, and their children Jessica, Roben, and David, in their beloved campervan.

Also in attendance at the retirement function was Donegal ETB Chief Executive, Ms. Anne McHugh, and Board of Management Representative, Ms. Joanne Donaghey.

Fifty-five groups in Cloughaneely came together last Friday evening for the ‘Cloughaneely Community Awards’ celebrating the achievements and dedication of people who work for the betterment of their community.

The event, held at Óstán Loch Altan in Gortahork, was an opportunity for the groups from across the cultural, social, charitable and sporting worlds to connect, share ideas, and enjoy an evening out.

The event had a sparkling start with a champagne reception sponsored by Óstán Loch Altan.

Edel Ní Chuireáin, former RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta manager, opened the event with an inspirational message in Irish, emphasising the importance of protecting and promoting the Irish language (“an teanga Gaeilge a chothú agus a chaomhnú”). The event,  while inclusive to all, also gave pride of place to the Irish language.

Over 250 people attended the event, representing the vast network of volunteers who contribute to the well-being of people of all ages in Cloughaneely.

Eamonn Bonner from the Donegal Volunteer Centre highlighted the importance of such gatherings, where “sitting around a table ideas happen.”

The event was made possible by the support of several individuals and organizations, including Cllr John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh, Cllr Michael Mc Clafferty, Donegal County Council, John Curran and Eamonn Bonner from the Donegal Volunteer Service, Gearóid Ó Smoláin from Údarás na Gaeltachta, and Energia.

Photos and information from the evening will be compiled into an exhibition to share the community’s work with a wider audience. The organizers also expressed their gratitude to Óstán Loch Altan, photographer Moses Alcorn, Aoibhe and Emer from Maureen Byrne’s Dancing School, and PCC students Darren and Niamh for their musical contributions. Appreciation was also extended to local sponsors who donated raffle prizes, details of which can be found on the Cloughaneely Community Awards Facebook page.

Donegal Councillor says special incentives needed to stop Gardai retiring early

$

A Donegal County Councillor has asked the Joint Policing Committee to write to the Minister for Justice requesting special incentives be offered to Gardai who are considering retiring early.

Under the current scheme, Gardai who joined the force before 1995 and has 30 years service can retire from the age of 50 with a Garda pension and can also take up a new job.

But County Councillor Michael McBride believes Minister Helen McEntee should come up with incentives to entice more mature Gardai to remain within their roles for at least another five years.

He said it will be almost impossible to build up numbers within the force if so many members are retiring when they reach this age with so much to still offer.

“I cannot understand why there are not special incentives to ask people who are retiring to serve for another five years because many will not be even 60.

“They could fulfil many roles including liaison officers.

“We are currently losing all that experience and all that know how. Even if this is our last act as a Joint Policing Committee I think we should write to the Minister and ask her to consider putting a special package in place for these members.”

Garda Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan agreed that there is a huge loss of knowledge with the retirement of experienced Gardai but referred to the 1995 retirement agreement within the force.

Chairperson of the JPC, Councillor Gerry McGonagle agreed that the committee should write to the Minister putting the request to her office.

Harps’ dip in form continues as they lose to Cork

Finn Harps’ recent woes continued after some costly moments led to two goals for Tim Clancy’s Cork City at Finn Park.

After a scoreless first-half in which Harps had the better of the opportunities, Sean Murray found the net with an hour gone.

The game was put beyond Harps when 16-year-old Jaden Umeh, who has been linked with Portuguese Giants Benfica, took advantage of a mishap at the back to add to their tally and open up a sizeable gap at the top of the first division.

Finn Harps remain in third position as of 8pm, but by 10pm, that could change due to results elsewhere in the league.

With Turner’s Cross currently out of commission, although it’s expected to be back in order in the very near future, this fixture was reversed to Finn Park.

Continued issues with the floodlights in Ballybofey meant the game was penned in for an earlier kick-off.

Action from the Finn Harps v Cork City clash at Finn Harp.. (North West Newspix)

Harps’ treatment room has been busy of late and the latest injuries resulted in a few forced changes for Darren Murphy as he brought in Ryan Rainey and Shane McMonagle while Sean O’Donnell was given his first start of the campaign.

Keen to get back to winning ways after back-to-back away defeats, Harps had the better of the early exchanges.

Patrick Ferry fashioned the first opportunity for himself as he found the space to get a shot away but he came face-to-face with Bradley Wade while the rebound from Sean O’Donnell was tipped over the bar by the netminder.

With just under 20 minutes gone, Ferry was in the thick of the action again and missed a gilt-edged chance to put the hosts in the lead.

O’Donnell’s persistence after a cross from Rainey kept the attack alive for Harps and the set-up was on a plate for Ferry but he blazed over from six yards and his reaction said it all.

Luke O’Brien had an effort which glided over the bar after half an hour as Harps were able to hold off any major threat from Cork City.

Cian Bargary created one opportunity for a shot which fizzed narrowly wide after quarter of an hour but their best opening was the last action of the first-half. Joshua Fitzpatrick whipped a ball in from the left and with it only half cleared, Sean Murray had a pop which was deflected inches wide of the Harps goal.

The second-half didn’t start with the same gusto as the first and it took until the hour for the first effort, one which resulted in the opening goal.

Greg Bolger floated in a corner from the left and with time and space, Sean Murray headed home into the top left corner.

Cork City had a chance to double their advantage just two minutes later but Bargary’s strike was straight at Heimer.

Edogun flashed an effort narrowly wide with just 20 minutes to go and not long after, Cork punished Harps.

Noe Baba’s hesitation on the ball in the defensive third proved costly as Umeh nicked in and made no mistake from the edge of the box for his second goal of the campaign.

The game petered out towards the latter stages and the only chance for Harps fell to Tony McNamee, who fired narrowly over from a free kick.

Donegal Gardai seize more than €1M of drugs since start of year

Gardai in Donegal have seized more than €1million of drugs since the start of the year.

The statistic was revealed by Garda Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan in a presentation to the Joint Policing Committee.

The overall figure includes two recent finds of €125,000 of cannabis in the Milford District and also more than €600,000 of cannabis in a growhouse in Donegal Town in February.

It also includes numerous other smaller amounts of various drugs including cocaine, heroin and MDMA following undercover Garda operations at various locations across the county.

The escalation in drugs finds coincides with the re-establishment of the local Garda Drugs unit in the county.

Chief Superintendent Sheridan said the finds “shows the benefit of having the drugs unit working on the ground.”

A number of people are currently before the courts in connection with a. number of these finds.

Chairperson of the Joint Policing Committee, Councillor Gerry McMonagle echoed these sentiments.

He said “Drugs has to be a huge priority for us and these finds show the amount of drugs both across the country and country.

“These are significant finds since the drugs unit was put back together again locally.”

Members of the Joint Policing Committee commended Gardai on their continuing fight against the scourge of drugs in the county at yesterday’s meeting.

Film fundraiser in Milford to support medical aid in Palestine

A night of film, discussion and solidarity will take place in Milford in May to shine a light on the conflict in Palestine.

Milford & District Resource Centre, in partnership with the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (Donegal Branch), is hosting a screening of ‘Freedom to Run’ on Friday, 3rd May at 7.30pm in the Gallowglass Community Centre.

The documentary, filmed in 2018, examines the everyday experience of apartheid by Palestinians in the West Bank.

‘Freedom to Run’ documents an exchange project between two groups of runners – one Scottish, one Palestinian – who participate in the Palestine and Edinburgh marathons. The marathon becomes a framing device to learn about the Israeli occupation, as you can’t run more than 10km in the West Bank without hitting checkpoints, roadblocks, or other obstacles.

“Since October, the devastation in Gaza has once again drawn the world’s eyes to Palestine for the wrong reasons” said Declan Meehan, manager of MDRC.

“I think most people feel helpless in the face of such destruction and loss of life, so we wanted to do something to provide an outlet for solidarity and action. We wanted to build awareness of the Palestinian experience under occupation, while also raising much-needed funds for the critical work MAP carry out in Gaza, the West Bank and with Palestinian refugees. We hope that many people will join us for a night of film, discussion and solidarity on the 3rd of May.”

All money raised will go to the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). MAP provides immediate medical aid to Palestinians in need at times of crisis, while also developing local capacity and skills to ensure the long-term development of the Palestinian healthcare system.

There will be a flavour of Palestine on the night with light refreshments from the region served before the film. The screening will be followed by a music session in the Travellers Inn.

Tickets are €15 per person and can be purchased at: https://www.klubfunder.com/Clubs/Milford_and_District_Resource_Centre/TicketSales

Woman in court in connection with €70,000 Letterkenny drugs sting

A young woman, the mother of a five-month old baby, has appeared in court to plead guilty to her part in a €70,000 drugs cargo found in her car in Letterkenny.

Tanya Van Coller was before Letterkenny Circuit Court.

The 34-year-old, with an address at Rough Park, Ramelton, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the commission of an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Van Coller spoke only to plead guilty during the short hearing before Judge John Aylmer at Letterkenny courthouse.

Van Coller pleaded guilty to allowing someone to travel in her car who was in possession of a controlled drug.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) accepted a plea to the count while a nolle prosequi – a decision not to proceed with the prosecution – was issued in respect of other charges.

A barrister for Van Coller told the court that his client has been on bail since August 2022 when she was released from a period of detention.

The barrister asked that the matter be adjourned until October and sought a probation and welfare report.

The barrister said that Van Coller had indicated early that she was willing to plead to this charge. He said his client had a young child, a five-month-old.

Judge Aylmer granted the preparation of a probation and welfare report and Van Coller was remanded on bail on the same terms.

During the same sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court, a co-accused, Amin Rhamahi, with an address at Hatfield Road, London, was jailed for three years with the balance of the sentence suspended from Wednesday last, April 24, for the possession of a controlled drug, namely cocaine, with the intention to sell or supply to others.

On August 26, 2022, during a garda operation, detectives stopped a vehicle in which the pair were travelling at Listillion, Letterkenny.

The vehicle was searched and a quantity of €70,308 worth of cocaine was located.

Saoirse McHugh has become the latest candidate to throw their hat into the EU election ring in the Midlands North-West constituency.

The former Green Party candidate in the 2019 EU elections has returned to politics after a four-year absence.

The Mayo politician and environmental activist left the Green Party in 2020, after the party decided to join the current Fine Gael and Fianna Fail coalition Government.

In a statement announcing her independent election campaign this week, Ms McHugh said:

“I believe that we can have a better Europe, one which stands against the slaughter of civilians instead of supporting it, where issues like housing, inequality, and collapse of the natural world can be resolved instead of being dragged into culture war nonsense.”

A Donegal band has got back together after 30 years to produce a new anthem supporting Donegal’s footballers – and the return of Jim McGuinness.

Celtic rock band Cajun Paddy have produced the new tune after three decades apart, with the comeback of Jim McGuinness a huge motivating factor in getting the show back on the road again.

Their new song, titled The King is Back, is a rhythmic rock anthem, with plenty of Irish traditional influence.

The brilliant music video, produced by award-winning Donegal studio Re-Act Productions, has already received a great response across social media.

Any music video celebrating Donegal and Jim McGuinness that also has a guy playing an electric guitar on top of a tractor will be highly recommended in Donegal Daily‘s books.

Suspect identified following attacks on historic Donegal graveyards

Gardaí have said they have identified a suspect in at least one of the cases after two historic Donegal graveyards were vandalised last weekend.

The first incident occurred at the ancient Raymochy Abbey site near Manorcunningham some time between 6pm on Friday and noon on Saturday.

Vandals damaged a number of headstones as well as a sign (main pic) erected by the local Raymochy Historical Society.

Meanwhile, two headstones were smashed in the graveyard at St Eunan’s Cathedral, Raphoe, sometime between 6.15 pm on Thursday and 9:30 am on Friday.

Donegal county councillor Donal Coyle condemned the attacks as “an awful scandal on consecrated ground.”

He was speaking at the Joint Policing Committee meeting held at County House in Lifford yesterday.

“I am particularly annoyed at what was done in Raymochy Graveyard as a lot of bother had gone into getting funding and the work done and then the information board was totally destroyed.

“It’s an awful shame. Graveyards are sacred places,” he said.

He said he wanted to know what was being done as part of the investigation into the attacks.

Garda Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan confirmed that both are still under investigation and there is a suspect for at least one of the incidents.

“They are under investigation. There is a suspect and we have engaged with locals. The person is vulnerable to a point but it will be investigated,” she confirmed.
