Donegal 4-27 v 0-15 Monaghan

By Charlie Collins

This was a must win game for Donegal in terms of a top two finish in the Nicky Rackard Cup round robin of fixtures.

Mickey McCann’s team had won their opening two games against Armagh and Mayo while opponents Monaghan had suffered two big defeats against Mayo and Roscommon.

With away fixtures against Roscommon and Louth to come Donegal could not afford any slip-ups here. Donegal dominated this game from the start, an early Liam McKinney set the tone after Stephen Gillespie and Niall McArthur had exchanged early points.

Donegal then hit four in a row, two frees from Gerry Gilmore and Sean McVeigh and Josh McGee Cronolly from play. Declan Hughes added Monaghan’s second from long distance, Ruairi Campbell replied, McArthur converted another free but McGee Cronolly and Gilmore points had Donegal ahead by 1-08 to 0-03 after twenty minutes.

Niall McArthur added his third and fourth points but in between McGee Cronolly and Declan Coulter both scored from play. Two more Gerry Gilmore frees made it 1-12 to 0-05, McArthur and Conor Gernon replied but after McArthur had added his fifth, Gilmore and Liam McKinney added two more Donegal points to send them to the half-time break 1-14 to 0-07 points ahead and well in control.

Donegal started the second-half as they did the first with an early goal, Oisín Grant grabbing Sean McVeigh’s long ball and blasting to the net. A string of points followed, two each from Gilmore and Coulter and one each.

McArthur converted a free frees for Monaghan but the one way traffic continued with Gavin Browne, Coulter, McVeigh, Gilmore, McKinney, Conor O Grady and goals from Coulter and Gilmore as they ran out winners by 4-27 to 0-15 to make it three wins from three.

Next up for Donegal is a tough trip to Roscommon in two weeks time. In today’s other game Mayo had a big win over Louth, Roscommon and Armagh play tomorrow.

‘There is always a fear cancer will revisit your door’ – Daniel’s powerful connection to Relay for Life

When Daniel O’Donnell first became a patron of Relay For Life Donegal, he had no personal reason to get involved, other than to support the Irish Cancer Society.

The following year, everything changed when his wife Majella was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“You really don’t know what’s around the corner,” Daniel tells Donegal Daily.

“It’s an amazing thing to be involved in,” he says of Relay for Life, now 12 years in Donegal.

“At the start, I was there with maybe no understanding other than being aware of people having cancer. Then the next year it was our story,” he reflects.

“I know what it’s like for somebody going through cancer. I know what Majella goes through even now. There is always that fear the cancer will come back. That’s a reality for everybody who has had cancer, I’m sure, that fear it will come back or revisit your door again.”

Majella O’Donnell, the Global Hero of Hope for Relay For Life Donegal, will join Daniel as a joint patron of this year’s event, which returns to the ATU Letterkenny campus on the 25th and 26th of May.

Majella’s incredible support of the Irish Cancer Society goes back to 2013 when she famously had her head shaved live on the Late Late Show, raising a staggering €550,000 almost overnight.

“Majella knows it from all sides, she knows the importance of this event,” Daniel adds.

The 24-hour Relay in Letterkenny will see Daniel performing a full concert for free on the main stage on Sunday the 26th May 2024 from 1.30pm to 3pm. There are no tickets and all are welcome to visit the ATU Letterkenny Campus and share in the solidarity, support and fundraising.

Daniel is inviting everyone to show their support in numbers.

“Your presence is important to give a boost to those who need it. And those that can give, will give a donation, it’s all going to a wonderful cause, it’s helping people now and in the future. Without research, there are so many people who wouldn’t be alive today. With research, there will be a lot of people in the future who will survive,” he said.

Relay for Life Donegal has raised a staggering €1,675,000 for the Irish Cancer Society since it began in 2011.

There are so many reasons to relay, whether in memory of a person who has passed on, to honour a survivor who has undergone treatment, or to raise funds to make cancer care and services better for those in the future.

The Luminaria ceremony is one of the most poignant highlights of the night, when thousands of candles light the track representing names of loved ones lost, those who have survived or are still fighting the disease.

Daniel says there great hope to be gained from the gathering: “There are so many people that have survived cancer that may not be thinking about going but it’s very important too for those that are going through cancer to meet people that have survived years and years, that is a wonderful positive situation and gives great hope to people.

“There is a sadness obviously remembering loved ones who are no longer with us in the Luminaria, it’s very emotional for many, you cannot but be moved by it but for the most part, it’s a very uplifting experience to be there and see how many people have been on the journey and are with us.”

In the first year, Daniel teamed up with Mark Roberts to write the inspirational song, ‘I’ll See This Journey Through’, which is echoed by the Survivors Choir each year.

Relay for Life is the biggest cancer fundraising initiative across the world. It sees communities across the globe coming together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with those facing cancer. Relay For Life is a celebration of solidarity and helps to raise awareness of the services provided by the Irish Cancer Society locally and nationally.

To provide these services requires significant funding and as only approximately 5% of the Irish Cancer Society’s Annual Funding comes from Government Funds, it depends on events such as Relay For Life Donegal to help raise the monies needed.

“We just don’t know when something will happen when we’ll have to reach out for the services, that this what this is all about,” Daniel said.

“I think it’s so important for that day to have a huge amount of people there to stand with the others that are going through a difficult time.”

Relay For Life Chairman Seamus Devine has thanked Daniel for offering to do the concert at Relay, saying: “Every year, Daniel and Majella amaze us by their energy and enthusiasm for Relay and this year’s gesture by Daniel and his band to perform (free of charge) at Relay is incredible. Daniel’s huge support base will be thrilled at the opportunity to see him perform at Relay and we look forward to welcoming them to the event. Hopefully they will be there throughout the weekend itself to experience what Relay For Life Donegal has to offer”.

Obviously not everyone will be able to be present on the day, but donations can be made online through the following link https://www.relayforlife.ie/event/donegal/donate

Judge strikes out drugs charge after man prescribed cannabis by doctor

A Donegal Judge spared a conviction for the possession of drugs after a man outlined to court how he was prescribed cannabis by a doctor in London.

Emmet Rudd was before Judge Ciaran Liddy (pictured above) Ballyshannon District Court charged with the unlawful possession of cannabis.

After reviewing documentation provided by Mr Rudd and hearing the defendant give evidence, Judge Ciaran Liddy struck out the charge.

Garda Paul White gave evidence of stopping a grey Toyota Yaris with three males on board at 10.40am on April 11, 2023 at Sminver, Ballyshannon.

There was a strong smell of cannabis in the vehicle and gardai located a blue jacket in which there were two white containers, each bearing Mr Rudd’s name. Cannabis to the value of approximately €30 was in each container.

Mr Rudd was cautioned told gardai that the containers were holding medicinal cannabis. He said they were obtained from a doctor and that they were from his own use.

Mr Frank Murphy, solicitor for Rudd, handed in a letter to the court which listed Mr Rudd’s medical condition and which showed that he was to take .3 of a gram of the product each day.

The product was sourced from Intego, a London-based ‘cannabis specialist clinic’, who say they provide ‘private medical cannabis treatment by expert clinicians’. The company confirmed, in a letter shown to the court, that Mr Rudd is under their direct care.

Mr Murphy said his client, a 22-year-old of Argyle Street, Derry, was not attempting to conceal the cannabis and he had a letter ‘as a valid prescription’.

“He has done everything right where he lives,” Mr Murphy said. “There is a scheme that if he lived in the Republic of Ireland he would be covered for medicinal cannabis.”

“It was the most legal form of illegality,” Mr Murphy said. “He done everything to the letter of the law. He thought that he was covered to travel outside his jurisdiction and he took all the relevant advices.

“He done everything in his ability to travel lawfully with a controlled substance. This was a valid, legal service that he was availing of.”

Garda Inspector Seamus McGonagle told the court that he was ‘not sure’ about the letter which was provided in court and there was a dispute between Mr Rudd and the gardai on whether or not he had shown the officers the document when initially stopped.

Mr Murphy said that a scheme is in place in Ireland, which enabled some people to carry cannabis if it was for medicinal purposes, but the product had to be under prescription in this State.

The Medical Cannabis Access Programme was signed into legislation in 2019 on a pilot basis for five years.

The Medical Cannabis Access Programme make it possible for a medical consultant to prescribe a cannabis-based treatment for a patient under his or her care for the following medical conditions, where the patient has failed to respond to standard treatments: Spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis; intractable nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy; and severe, refractory (treatment-resistant) epilepsy.

Mr Rudd took to the witness box and said his own doctor put him in touch with the company, who he has an online check-up with every three months.

He said the medicinal cannabis is posted directly to his house in Derry ‘and comes in a proper prescription bag’.

Mr Rudd told Judge Liddy that he suffers from bad anxiety and depression and this is a favoured form of treatment ‘so I don’t have to take tablets’.

He told the Judge that he has travelled to France and England ‘and had no bother in airports’.

“At all times, I thought that I was above board.” Mr Rudd said.

Judge Ciaran Liddy said he found the facts proven and struck the matter out.

Buncrana Hearts are once again Ulster Junior Cup champions after defeating Letterkenny Rovers on penalties.

The Inishowen side completed a three-peat of Ulster Junior Cup titles in the most dramatic of ways.

They had to come from behind in this contest however, with Letterkenny Rovers taking the lead with a penalty of their own early in the first half – Lee McMonagle giving Letterkenny the lead.

Jamie McDaid found an equaliser for Buncrana just before half time as Jamie McDaid levelled things up.

Buncrana took the lead with 15 minutes to go, with a penalty box melee following a Kieran McDaid corner resulting in a goal.

That lead wouldn’t last though, as Letterkenny’s Lee McMonagle rose to the occasion to grab his second of the game with moments to spare to send both sides to penalties.

After a dramatic shootout, Buncrana ran out 7-6 winners and deserving three-in-a-row winners of the cup.

A Donegal-based parish priest originally from Tyrone has told his parishoners to pray for Donegal ahead of their Ulster Championship matchup this afternoon.

Killygordon Parish Priest Fr Patsy Atkinson jokingly gave the message to parishoners this morning at St Patrick’s Church, Crossroads.

Concluding his closing remarks during the 10am mass, Fr Atkinson reminded his parishoners where his true colours lay.

“As you may know, Tyrone are playing Donegal today at Celtic Park, Derry, this afternoon,” Fr Atkinson told the congregation.

“So as a Tyrone man, the only advice I can give to any of you Donegal folk is – if you’re prepared to take it on board – keep Donegal in your prayers. Donegal will need a lot of prayer this afternoon.”

Come throw-in this afternoon, we here at Donegal Daily can confirm rosary beads will be in-hand for fans from both counties throughout the match.

Revealed: Just TWO part-time counsellors addressing Donegal’s gambling crisis

Just two part-time counsellors are trying to address the spiralling problem of gambling addictions across Donegal.

Details of the uphill battle were given at a special presentation to members of Donegal’s Joint Policing Committee this week.

Gambling Support Counsellor for the Finn Valley area, Gertrude Houton, outlined the reality for those facing a gambling addiction in the county.

Ms Houton revealed how a total of 2,591 therapeutic sessions were given to people suffering from gambling issues across the county last year.

She also outlined that gambling comes in many forms from online betting to bookies to scratch cards and visiting casinos.

And the issue across Donegal and the rest of Ireland is growing.

Ms Houton revealed that the problem now is estimated to be TEN times larger than it was when last studied in 2019 with 130,000 adults now presenting with a gambling problem.

Ms Houton said one of the real problems was still convincing people to come forward and admit they have an issue with gambling.

She said “There is a lot of talk about gambling issues but it is still very hard for people to come forward. People are still embarrassed to admit they have a problem. The gambler might not be ready to come forward,” she said.

And with the modern day reality of people not even having to get out of the bed in the morning to place a bet, Ms Houton said those facing gambling addictions are surrounded by their problem on a daily basis.

She gave one example of a young Donegal man who literally bet many thousands of euro on Donegal beating Monaghan in a GAA game and lost the bet.

She said “He did lose the bet that day but he said to us later that he was glad he lost the bet because he would not have been with us discussing his problems and getting help if he had won the bet.”

Ms Houton answered a number of queries from members of the Joint policing Committee surrounding the issue of gambling including advertising, issues around social media and the issue of gambling being hereditary.

Councillor Donal Coyle said that in his opinion the Government was simply not doing enough to face up to the issue.

Councillor Michael McBride said he was thankful for small advances such as a ban on betting on Under 16 and minor GAA games.

Garda Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan said that Gardai see the impact of gambling addiction in the community regularly.

However, she indicated that she would like Ms Houton to come and speak with her officers in the future.

Chairperson of the JPC, Councillor Gerry McMonagle said that it was obvious there is a serious problem with gambling in Donegal and it was also obvious that there are not enough resources to cope with it.

“More support is needed. I know the pressure they are under and we must support them in any way we can,” he said.

Donegal’s two gambling support counsellors are based in the Twins Towns and also Pettigo but cater for people with gambling issues from across the entire county.

A Gambling Support Counsellor can be reached by emailing gamblingsupport@dpfss.ie or by telephoning 0749131245.

Donegal through to Ulster final after nail-biting extra time win over Tyrone

Donegal 0-18 v 0-16 Tyrone

Donegal are through to the Ulster Championship final after a nail-biting extra time win over Tyrone.

The first half was sloppy from Donegal, as Tyrone were able to convert a number of frees. Meanwhile Donegal were wasteful in the first half, giving the Red Hand county a 3 point advantage at half-time, 0-08 to 0-05.

Donegal were able to level the tie ten minutes into the second half at 0-09 apiece, but a quick scoring salvo from Tyrone quickly restored their three point advantage.

A nail-biting finish was in store, as Donegal closed the margin to one point.

Deep into the three minutes of injury time, Donegal’s Brendan McCole capitalised from a goalmouth scramble in the Tyrone penalty area to send over a point that would take the game to extra time.

The game remained a back-and-forth affair in extra time, again Donegal had several costly wides from good opportunities as things came down to the wire with just one point between the sides.

A huge score in injury time at the end of extra time from Patrick McBrearty sealed a hard-faught win, and a date with destiny against Armagh next week in the final.

Match Report: Donegal squeeze past Tyrone to grab Ulster Final spot

Donegal 0-18 v 0-16 Tyrone

By Charlie Collins at Celtic Park

It was a quick return to Celtic Park for Donegal following last week’s impressive victory over Derry, but they had little time to dwell on that performance as they faced another challenging derby encounter against Tyrone for a final place against Armagh in the Ulster Senior Championship.

Team captain Patrick McBrearty was considered fully recovered from injury and was included in the starting line-up in place of Aaron Doherty, but Shaun Patton had not recovered from the injury he sustained against Derry so Gavin Mulreany took over the important goalkeeping role.

Tyrone’s injury list meant a number of first choice players remained unavailable including the experienced Peter Harte who was badly missed in their one point extra-time victory over Cavan last weekend. They were also boosted by the inclusion of Conn Kilpatrick, Cathal McShane, and Michael O Neill.

The manner of both teams victories last week meant Donegal went into this one as favorites but very mindful that a week is a long time in sport and to take anything for granted would be a serious mistake.

Tyrone dominated the early possession but Niall O Donnell put Donegal ahead after six minutes, however two frees in quick from Darren McCurry and Darragh Canavan had Tyrone in front after eight minutes. Oisín Gallen’s free had Donegal level but another McCurry free put Tyrone in front again, but not for long as Daire O Baoill kicked an excellent point to level it up again at 0-03 apiece.

Donegal’s Ciarán Thompson lines up a shot at goal during Sunday’s semi final. Photo Evan Logan

Sean O Donnell and Ciaran Daly scored two super points from play and Tyrone were two ahead, but not for long as Oisín Gallen’s long range free and a super Ciaran Thompson point from play brought them level again at 0-05 apiece. Play continued to flow from end to end but Tyrone were now taking their chances and Donegal were struggling to convert.

Tyrone then kicked ahead with three points in a row from Darragh Canavan, a Niall Morgan free and a Cathal McShane score, reward at that stage for their better retention and finishing. Donegal had a number of chances after this but failed to convert and at half-time Tyrone deservingly led by 0-08 to 0-05.

Donegal’s Oisín Gallen looks for a way to goal during Sunday’s semi final. Photo Evan Logan

The lead was quickly back to just one as Jason McGee kicked two excellent points from play, Niall Morgan converted another long range free before Niall O Donnell scored from play again to make it a one point game, 0-09 to 0-08.

Daire O Baoill brought Donegal level with a fine score from play but Morgan kicked his third from a free and Ciaran Daly and Darragh Canavan took advantage of poor kick-outs to push the lead out to three again.

But not for long as Peadar Mogan and Caolan McGonagle both kicked super points from play and Oisín Gallen’s free after Shane O Donnell had done well brought them level again, 0-12 apiece.

Michael McKiernan put Tyrone ahead again, Ciaran Thompson’s free levelled it up but Darragh Canavan’s mark edged Tyrone ahead again as time ran out. Donegal had a great chance when Peadar Mogan burst through and attempted to play a one-two with Jason McGee but the return pass slipped through Mogan’s hand as a goal looked certain and Donegal’s chances also gone.

But they forced a long kick-out from Niall Morgan and came again looking for a score. Ryan McHugh’s shot from the left dropped short, Mark Curran contested the ball which dropped to Aaron Doherty, his effort for a goal was blocked but was grabbed by Brendan McCole who blasted it over the bar for the equalizer, 0-14 apiece and we were heading for extra-time.

Donegal’s Patrick McBrearty breaks for goal during Sunday’s semi final. Photo Evan Logan

Jeaic MacCeallbhui and Patrick McBrearty for Donegal and Mattie Donnelly and Michael McKernan exchanged points to leave it 0-16 apiece in this titanic struggle. Just before half-time in extra-time Shane O Donnell punched over a point and Donegal led by 0-17 to 0-16 at the interval.

Patrick McBrearty got the only score of the second-half of extra-time as Donegal won it 0-18 to 0-16 to send them into a Ulster Final against Armagh in two weeks time.

The Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter is getting ready to hold its 2024 Annual General Meeting this month.

The AGM is open to the local community, as well as local stakeholders to shape the future of the Cathedral Quarter’s development into the future.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter organisation, with the AGM giving the local community a chance to contribute to the future of the area.

“We are thrilled to invite all members of the community to join us for our AGM,” said a Cathedreal Quarter spokesperson.

“This event is not only an opportunity to celebrate our decade of accomplishments but also a chance to engage in meaningful dialogue about the future direction of our beloved quarter. Together, we can continue to build a thriving, inclusive community that showcases the rich culture and heritage of Letterkenny.”

“Year on year the project goes from strength and we are seeking people with expertise in events, public relations, fundraising and webpage design in particular but encourage anyone with an interest to come along.”

“We host an annual programme of events including St Brigid’s Day Crossmaking, Street Feast, Heritage Week, Culture Night, our Literary Festival and the Letterkenny Carol Trail. To celebrate our tenth anniversary, we have hosted an Easter Craft Fair and we will be facilitating an Argentinean Tango Dance Demonstration and Workshop with Buenos Aires natives Elizabeth Cordone and Matias Rivas.”

“If you feel would like to contribute to this dynamic innovative project, come along to our AGM in Dillons Hotel on Monday, 13th May at 8pm. Play your part in this exciting chapter of Letterkenny. All are welcome.”

The Arranmore RNLI was tasked with rescuing a sailor from a yacht this weekend.

They responded to a call for assistance at 2:41am early this Sunday morning, as a yacht with one person onboard had suffered a loss of power 18 miles west of Arranmore Island.

The call was stood down for a time when power briefly returned to the yacht, but Arranmore RNLI volunteers were once again called upon at 7:43am when the boat had failed to make progress.

On reaching the casualty the lifeboat crew established a tow and proceeded to tow the yacht to safe moorings at Arranmore, where acting lifeboat mechanic Reamon O’Donnell offered to examine the engine. On examination Reamon identified and fixed the problem and provided the yacht with fuel. Crew on board the lifeboat were, Coxswain Jimmy Early, mechanic Reamon O’Donnell, Sean Gallagher, Jamie Neeson, Sharon O’Donnell, Finbar Gallagher and John Boyle.

The lifeboat returned to anchor at 1.45pm having refuelled at Burtonport following a six hour call out. The yachtsman decided to stay at anchor at Arranmore to rest overnight.

This is the second call for the Arranmore RNLI’s all weather lifeboat in five days, as on Tuesday evening, the 23rd of April, the volunteer crew assisted in a medical evacuation from Arranmore to a waiting ambulance at Burtonport.

Coxswain Jimmy Early said: “We are always happy to give assistance where needed. The yachtsman was really grateful for all the help in towing him to safety and repairing his engine, we have a really dedicated crew here on Arranmore and they are always prepared to go above and beyond the call of duty. We are, at present, recruiting crew members for the lifeboat and invite anybody interested in joining to come to the station for a look and a chat.”

No Barriers Foundation in Letterkenny is inviting people to apply for the new Healthy Strong Together Programme, a free 10-week rehabilitation and physical activity programme designed specifically for people with a neurological condition

Twenty-five people with a confirmed neurological diagnosis, such as spinal injury, stroke, brain injury, MS or other neurological condition, can partake in the unique programme free of charge.

Designed by Donegal’s No Barriers Foundation, and supported by Rethink Ireland, this programme will take participants on a 10 week journey towards feeling healthier and stronger. It starts with an initial assessment to find out first-hand what you want and need and how you feel about your current circumstances.

Together with the highly skilled team, based at No Barriers at Mountain Top Letterkenny, you will set collaborative health goals and discuss how to proactively move towards achieving those goals throughout the programme. The programme empowers people to feel confident and strong in their health journey and take part in physical activity in the community.

At present in Donegal, those with varying levels of disability cannot achieve their full rehabilitation potential in the community. This results in increased social marginalisation as well as physical and mental comorbidities increasing readmission rates.

Johnny Loughrey Founder & CEO of No Barriers commented:”Many individuals with disabilities are not aware of how much they can actually do to stay fit, strong and healthy. Our programme provides people with the everyday knowledge and skills they need to continue exercising beyond the programme. Wherever your starting point is, we will meet you there and work with you to remove barriers to your health goals.”

“We are very thankful to Rethink Ireland and Minister Anne Rabbitte for their support and belief in the Foundation and Programme.”

No Barriers have secured the funding to run this programme via Rethink Ireland and the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth

This unique and innovative 10 week programme provides specialist neurological care, together with specialised exercise and physical activity services in an inclusive gym environment. It allows those that are discharged from acute care within the HSE following the likes of a spinal injury, stroke, brain injury, MS or any other neurological condition to continue to rehabilitate in a socially inclusive community environment.

What does the programme include?

The programme will include a mixture of:
• Physiotherapy
• Occupational Therapy
• Exercise therapy (individual and small group)
• Indoor and outdoor physical activities
• Mindfulness classes
• Modified Yoga classes
• Modified Pilates classes
• Peer support groups
• Educational sessions

Following our initial assessment, we will then plan out your 10 week programme. The program will be 3 sessions per week and include a mixture of the above mentioned elements.

We provide a social outlet and hope to those who often feel isolated and socially marginalised. Your rehabilitation is about building confidence and self-esteem as much as regaining physical strength and mobility.

How do I qualify for the programme?

You need to:

  1. Have a confirmed Neurological Diagnosis (Examples are Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Brain Injury, MS, Parkinson’s Disease.)
  2. Have previously been in contact with the HSE regarding the diagnosis

If you meet these two criteria, a phone consultation is conducted to determine your suitability for the programme.

Do I need to be referred?

You can but it’s not essential. Individuals can be referred or self-refer by contacting us directly.

How do I get in touch?

You can call 0838855056 or email us at hello@nobarriers.ie

When does it start?

The programme will begin in the coming weeks and it will be running until September.
