We Don’t Want This: Campaign tackles viral videos of youth violence in Donegal

Four attention-grabbing videos have been launched today highlighting the devastating impact of violence between youths being recorded and posted online.

The ‘We Don’t Want This’ campaign aims to tackle growing concerns in Donegal over fighting footage spreading across social media.

The campaign shows that the violence, whether it’s outside schools or elsewhere, has far-reaching consequences for many people, including the victim of violence, the aggressor, the parents and the by-stander who records the incident.

Funded by Tusla, the four thought-provoking videos feature local actors in storylines guided by young representatives working with a subgroup of the Donegal North Central Child and Family Support Network.

The subgroup collaborated with Tusla, Foróige Youth Diversion Project, Donegal Youth Service, Local Youth and Family Service, Donegal Domestic Violence Service, An Garda Síochána, Loreto Community School, Milford, and The Donegal Youth Council to address the issue with a focus on early intervention.

Re-Act Productions, based in Donegal, came on board to produce the final set of videos.

The videos premiered today at a launch event in Century Cinemas Letterkenny. They can be viewed on the Parenting Platform on YouTube to help promote awareness and share the message that “We Don’t Want This” peer-on-peer violence behaviour to continue.

Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan officially launched the videos at the event and commented “This is a great initiative created by young people to highlight the impact of peer-on-peer violence. I have no doubt the messaging from these videos will help to reduce the number of incidents of peer-on-peer violence in our communities.

“It is important that the message is shared far and wide in the county to raise awareness among young people, guardians and professionals who will support those most impacted.

“An Garda Síochána are available to advise and support anyone affected by these types of incidents.”

Garda juvenile liaison officer Patrick McGlynn said: “We have noticed young people are leaving school in the afternoon and they are being set upon by other youths. There could be somebody recording the incident or assault and then the recording would be shared online. When we go to speak to the young person involved, they are embarrassed and intimated by what happened, and a lot of the time they don’t want to pursue the matter with a formal complaint and they don’t want to go back to school. We decided as a committee we weren’t going to stand idly by.”

Garda McGlynn said he hoped the videos would be a talking point, giving an insight to people of what happens behind the scenes of such incidents, and encourage people to come forward and prevent peer violence.

Also speaking at the event, Martin Keeney, Prevention Partnership and Family Support (PPFS) Senior Manager, Tusla said “The launch of these videos is an important example of what can be achieved when organisations come together to look at targeted ways to tackle problems in our communities.

“Sharing recordings on social media of violent acts against young people is a serious issue which can cause huge damage to the lives of the young people involved and their families. These videos aim to promote awareness and highlight the dangers involved, which is an important part of how we tackle this issue. I hope this message can reach as large an audience as possible.”

Dorothea Allen, Chair of the subgroup behind the project, said: “We want to stand up and say that we don’t want young people worried about being assaulted on the street or on the way home from school. We don’t want young people feeling that a fight is the only way to settle an argument. We don’t want parents being worried about young people leaving the house afraid if someone will attack them. We don’t want any of that for our young people, for our communities or for our county.”

This Donegal North Central Child and Family Support Network project has been funded under Donegal Tusla and Donegal CYPSC.

Donegal search for Arlene Arkinson’s remains ends without success

Searches in the Glenfin area last week for the remains of Arlene Arkinson have ended without success.

Gardaí cordoned off several areas of the remote Ballybobaneen Forest in Glenfin last Monday morning, September 9, when a specialist garda search team and diggers moved in. However, the search ended on Saturday without the discovery of any remains.

The latest operation comes shortly after the 30th anniversary of the disappearance of the 15-year-old from Castlederg, County Tyrone, in August 1994 after a night out in Bundoran.

A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office confirmed to Donegal Daily that “there are no searches ongoing at this time”, but declined to comment further.

Arlene’s sister, Kathleen Akinson, said the family was devastated at the outcome of the latest development, but commended Gardaí for their efforts.

In July 2021, an inquest found Arlene Arkinson was murdered by convicted child killer and rapist Robert Howard, who died in 2015.

Howard had previously been charged with her murder in 2002, but acquitted in 2005.

Numerous searches, including some in vast swathes of bogland and forestry near the Donegal border, have been carried out over the years in search of Arlene’s remains.

One of the last searches was conducted by Gardai in May of this year in the Castlefin area, however, nothing was found.

Speaking ahead of a 30th anniversary vigil last month, Kathleen Arkinson said her sister deserved “to be found and get a decent burial.”

Heartbroken Kathleen said she believed deep in her heart that “some day Arlene will be found”.

She said she had mixed emotions ahead of the memorial in her sister’s memory.

“One day I’m alright, the next I’m not – I just can’t believe it’s been 30 years,” she said.

“I’m thinking about Arlene and that night – I know she suffered, but I just wish I could’ve taken the pain.”

“[Robert] Howard killed Arlene, but he also killed a part of us as well,” she added.

An inquest in 2021 found Robert Howard, who died in 2015, murdered Arlene Arkinson

Howard was the last person seen with Arlene Arkinson before her disappearance.

More than a third of recommendations downgraded in defective blocks scheme

More than a third of all engineer’s recommendations for remediating homes in the defective concrete block scheme have been downgraded, it has been revealed.

The revelation came to light at today’s Defective Concrete Blocks Scheme Committee meeting, following a question from Cllr. Declan Meehan.

A Housing Agency representative on the committee outlined that, of 315 remediation options granted, 123 were changed from the original recommendations made by homeowners’ engineers.

Of those, 111 were lowered from Option 1 (full demolition) to Options 2-4 or a combination of these. This represents 35% of all applications to the scheme, now administered by the Housing Agency.

“We have known anecdotally that this is a huge problem and one which is causing a lot of distress to homeowners attempting to access the scheme” Cllr. Meehan said.

“The report from the Housing Agency today shows the scale of this problem with one-third of all applications being downgraded.

“In light of these statistics and the leaked Attorney General’s advice previously, the question begs to be asked if this is a systemic attempt to frustrate true and full redress even within the constraints of the so-called enhanced scheme?

“Families and individuals affected by these downgrades are left in an impossible situation, especially given that the appeals process does not permit any new evidence for consideration.

As a result of this homeowners only have the difficult choice of either proceeding with the downgraded remediation option or holding out for something better under a potentially new or improved scheme.

“This yet again highlights how flawed this redress scheme is, and how it – and this government – are failing homeowners.”

Gardaí investigating filmed attack on east Donegal teenager

An investigation has been launched after a teenager was attacked by a group of young males in Ballybofey at the weekend.

The frightening incident took place on Chestnut Road, behind Finn Park, on Friday evening in broad daylight.

The victim, who is believed to be a non-Irish national, was attacked by a group of male teenagers who are understood to be local.

Worryingly, the incident was filmed by one of the group and circulated widely on WhatsApp and other messaging platforms.

The video clearly shows a boy on the ground in the middle of the road with at least three males on top of him and punching him. He later gets to his feet and attempts to fight back. A number of motorists stopped and could be heard telling the attackers that the guards had been called.

A spokesman for the Garda Press Office confirmed to Donegal Daily the matter was being investigated.

“Gardaí in Co. Donegal are investigating a report of an assault which took place in the Ballybofey area on Friday, 13th September,” he said.

It is understood that the young man did not receive any significant injuries, however, he was badly shaken as a result of the incident.

The confirmation of the garda investigation comes just hours after the launch of ‘We Don’t Want This’ : a campaign that aims to tackle viral videos of youth violence in Donegal.

Councillor demands action on new Twin Towns link road

Main pic: The location at Navenny, where the proposed new relief road could start.

A local councillor has called for an update on plans for a new multi-million euro inner relief road in Ballybofey.

Cllr Patrick McGowan made the call at today’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD) in relation to the proposed Western Link Road.

Donegal Daily revealed in 2021 that a consultancy firm had been appointed to progress the route between Navenny Bridge and Donegal Road. However, Cllr McGowan said he has ‘heard nothing’ since 2022.

The road is not part of the planned Twin Towns Bypass.

If it goes ahead, however, the relief road will connect Navenny Bridge, near Finn Park, to the Donegal Road. As a result, traffic will be able to avoid the Navenny and Glenfin street bottlenecks, before taking the new link road to the bypass.

Late last year, Donegal County Council agreed to purchase the late Dr Frank Mulrine’s house, which sits on one acre, on Donegal Street as part of their plans.

“We have heard nothing since 2022 – between €150,000 and €200 has been allocated for studies, but we’ve seen no reports,” Cllr McGowan said today.

“That Navenny road is ridiculous – anytime there’s a flood the road is closed.”

Senior Roads Engineer with the council, Clare McGeever, told Cllr McGowan that land acquisitions in relation to the proposed route have yet to be completed. As a result, there was no update.

However, Cllr McGowan said the new link road had been discussed ‘years’ before the purchase of Dr Mulrine’s property.

Again, Ms McGeever told Cllr McGowan that the council couldn’t discuss route options until the purchase was complete.

Man convicted of theft from TK Maxx in Letterkenny

A man who stole €285 worth of items from a Letterkenny shop has been convicted in court.

Mohammad Gaouaoui appeared before Letterkenny District Court.

Gaouaoui was charged with the theft from TK Maxx at Letterkenny Retail Park on December 28, 2023.

A 38-year-old of Hazel Hotel, Monasterevin, Kildare, was charged that he did steal a jacket, a holdall and a mineral drink to the value of €285 the property of TK Maxx. The charge is contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.

Speaking with the assistance of an interpreter, Gaouaoui elected to have the matter dealt with in the District Court and tendered a guilty plea.

Mr Frank Dorrian, solicitor for Gaouaoui, said his cdlient is a 38-year-old from Algeria who has been in Ireland since 2018. He said there is ‘quite a language barrier’ and these incidents came as a result of being intoxicated which ‘clouded the judgement’ of his client.

Mr Dorrian said Gaouaoui, who is currently unemployed, is legally in Ireland and has a residency permit, which he is ‘anxious to guard’.

“This type of behaviour is incompatible with the status enhancement that he is seeking,” Mr Dorrian said.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham convicted Gaouaoui and fined him €150, giving five months to pay.

Gaouaoui was also convicted of possessing cannabis on another date.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that Gardai received a call on January 19, 2024 from a male who told them that a man was smoking cannabis on a bus from Belfast to Letterkenny. When searched by officers, Gaouaoui was found with €5 worth of cannabis.

“His cognitive skills are not that intact,” Mr Dorrian said. “Smoking dope on a bus from Belfast . . . it was guaranteed to end badly.”

For this offence, Gaouaoui was convicted and fined €100 with six months to pay.

Dylan Thomas’ poteen-fuelled Donegal sejourn retold in compelling comedy drama

$

0

A new drama from Shaun Byrne that centres on Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’s stay in Donegal in the summer of 1935 is due to premiere next week with some well-known faces.

One Night at Glenlough is a dark moving comedy written by Shaun Byrne and directed by Charlie Bonner imagining the last night of Thomas’ stay in rural Donegal.

Known for famous lyrical works like Fern Hill, Do not go gentle into that good night and Under Milkwood, Thomas has over the years garnered a reputation as a free living, slightly tortured, bohemian writer. His stay in Glenlough did little to dispel that myth making.

The play is a boozy night of soul searching and piss taking for the poet. Accompanying him is local postman Liam who has his own demons to contend with. Much poteen and liberties are taken as stories, poems and songs are shared.

One Night at Glenlough will open at the Balor Theatre in Ballybofey before transferring to the Abbey Arts Centre in Ballyshannon and Halla Mhuire, Glencolmcille where Thomas spent the summer recuperating from his hectic London lifestyle while composing new work.

One Night at Glenlough by Shaun Byrne, directed by Charlie Bonner

Returning to his hometown to appear on the Balor stage for the first time is Frankie McCafferty, star of stage and screens both big and small. Frankie is one of Donegal’s most successful and best-known actors.

His thirty-year career on stage and screen has seen him work with almost every major Irish theatre company including The Abbey Theatre (The Plough and The Stars), the Gaiety Theatre (The Lonesome West) and Decadent Theatre (The Seafarer, The Weir). His many roles at The Lyric Theatre, Belfast, where he now lives, include Waiting for Godot, The Playboy of the Western World and Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, for which he received an Irish Times Theatre Award.

His Film and TV roles include Philomena, Angela’s Ashes, In the Name of the Father, Far and Away, Ballykissangel, Vikings, Ripper Street, Derry Girls and, most recently, Blue Lights.

Frankie expressed his delight at being involved in the project. “Of course I’m thrilled to be finally treading the boards here and to be involved in such a unique local production makes it even sweeter. I’ve known the director, Charlie Bonner for some time so I’m glad to be working with him. I’m really looking forward to going to Glencolmcille, I think the reaction there will be fantastic as really it’s their story. I filmed Murder in Eden, a TV mini series, there a few years back and have fond memories of the place,” he said.

Joining Frankie on stage will be Aidan Moriarty who is no stranger to these parts either.

Donegal audiences will have seen him recently in The Abbey Theatre / Lyric Theatre, Belfast co-production of Brian Friel’s Translations at An Grianan, as well as appearing in An Grianán Theatre’s own recent production of Friel’s The Enemy Within, part of the recent Colmcille 1500 celebrations. Aidan too has already trod the boards with many of the major players in the Irish theatre scene.

He spoke about the complexity and difficulties in playing ‘real’ parts, as opposed to totally fictional ones especially in a live venue context: ‘I suppose you have a duty of care to the actual character that goes beyond the obvious vocal and physical mannerisms. Thomas had an unusual upbringing in Swansea. His father, a teacher, was a fluent Welsh speaker as was his mother but both refused to let either of their two children speak it. Instead Dylan ended up after elocution lessons with what we call an RP accent but drifts back sometimes into his native brogue when tensions rise. I guess the voice, deep and sonorous, was just another one of his many masks or cloaks.’

Director, Charlie Bonner, is a well-known actor and director from Ballybofey.

Charlie’s recent film work includes The Woman in The Wall (BBC 1), Obituary (Hulu/RTÉ) and the much praised film documentary, Brian Friel: Shy Man, Showman

For last year’s Bluestacks Festival, Charlie directed the hugely successful civil war play, Drumboe written by Kieran Kelly, which sold out its four-night run at the Balor Arts Centre.

Charlie said he was drawn to the script because of the honesty of the writing and the madness of the set up. “Here you have two lads, half skulled out of their heads on poteen just basically taking a hand at each other for the first half. It’s mad stuff. Dylan is caught between a rock and a hard place: become the man he wants to be or the man people expect him to be. It’s decision time for him and he can’t hide out here forever. Some of the stuff he comes out with, it’s either pure genius or pure mental. God he had no time for Ardara either whatever they did to him or him to them and he doesn’t hold back. I’m worried what my mother Rosemary, an Ardara woman to the bone, will say to me afterwards. But people should come along, it’s very moving and a great night’s crack.”

Making up the quartet is writer Shaun Byrne, no stranger to the Balor or Abbey Centre stages.

Shaun’s recent work has enjoyed tremendous success on the festival circuit, reaching the RTÉ All Ireland Drama Festival in Athlone for the past three years.

Earlier this year, Ballyshannon Drama Society won their way to Athlone with his play Margaret, on the life and times of Margaret Thatcher, with Best Actress Award-winning Rachel O’ Connor in the title role.

His previous plays, the Bloody Sunday-themed An Incident with Dave Cotter and the family drama, Darkness Echoing, were festival successes for the Butt Drama Circle.

This then would seem to be a departure for  Shaun in his writing but he disagrees. “I’ve written about real characters before, most recently Margaret Thatcher so there’s a familiarity there. I think the trick is to do your research but not be a slave to it. Thomas’s work just went out of copyright this year so he is topical with new editions of his work and screen adaptations planned. I just think the very idea of this artist living like a hermit on the coast of Donegal before breaking out and returning to the drink and the honesty and dark comedy that it provides had so much potential. Although it is Liam the Postman who’s the dark horse in the whole set up.”

Apple’s €13 billion could tackle Donegal’s biggest issues – Pringle

Donegal’s Independent TD Thomas Pringle says the €13 billion Apple tax bill could have transformed public service and Donegal’s most pressing problems.

Deputy Pringle is calling on the government to make crucial choices to “support the people in Budget 2025”.

Deputy Pringle said: “It is a disgrace that the Government had been fighting the €13 billion Apple tax bill, when it should have been fighting for the people.

“That money could have transformed public service. It could have gone to a host of pressing issues that would directly benefit the public, including 100% redress for people affected by defective blocks, healthcare, education and housing.”

On the Future Ireland Fund, Pringle said: “The State has already salted away about €100 billion that should also be used to address these issues as well.

“It’s not that we don’t have the money anymore. As we have seen over and over, there is no political will. This has been a clear reminder of who this Government is really fighting for.

“We never see multinational executives march in our streets to get what they want from Government. Yet time and time again we have seen families, people from all our communities having to take to the streets to have their voices heard.

“We have also seen in the past that while domestic businesses regularly pay the full percentage of corporation tax, many multinationals do not. Corporate giants must stop exploiting tax loopholes and give back to the societies they profit from. And we need a government that will make sure that happens.

“In Budget 2024 we saw missed opportunities and a number of once-off payments that do nothing to support struggling people and families in the long term. The people deserve better in Budget 2025.

“We have the money. What we need is the political will,” he said.

A Letterkenny man has been convicted of stealing €180 worth of groceries from Lidl.

Thomas Ward, a 33-year-old of The Gardens, Ballymacool, appeared at Letterkenny District Court over two thefts from Lidl in Letterkenny.

On March 12, 2024, Ward was charged with stealing groceries worth €80. He was also charged with stealing groceries to the value of €100 from Lidl on September 16, 2023.

The charges are contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.

Ward tendered a guilty plea in respect of each incident.

Sergeant Jim Collins said the accused passed all points of payment without paying for the items, none of which were recovered.

Ward has a total of 13 previous convictions, the court heard, including one theft matter from 2012, while the others were for road traffic and public order offences.

Solicitor for Ward, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said his client was accompanied to court by his wife.

Mr Gallagher said alcohol was involved on one occasion and on the other his client had spent money on alcohol which was supposed to go towards groceries.

“He is deeply remorseful and apologetic,” Mr Gallagher said. He said his client, who he described as ‘a man dealing with demons, made full admissions to gardai and has a very supportive family.

Jude Éiteáin Cunningham convicted Ward on one of the charges and fined him €200, allowing five months to pay. The other charge was marked as taken into account.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMS) programme are expected to spend up to two semesters on the Mountbellew farm, where they will engage with local veterinary practices. Meanwhile, other teaching and clinical facilities will be based at the Donegal campus.

John McNulty, Fine Gael candidate for Donegal, has welcomed the announcement, stating, “This new programme is a fantastic development for our region.

“I recently met with members of Donegal IFA, and a shortage of support for veterinary practices was a real concern discussed.

“This programme will provide valuable educational opportunities, support local veterinary practices, and shows a real commitment to creating pathways for future professionals in Donegal,” concluded McNulty.
