A new health and wellbeing programme designed especially for farmers is being rolled out in Buncrana and Carndonagh this week.

A number of spaces remain on FIT4FARMLIFE, a free initiative, beginning this Tuesday in Buncrana and on Thursday in Carndonagh.

FIT4FARMLIFE is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine, but managed locally by Inishowen Development Partnership. The programme includes weekly workshops and information events focusing on issues blighting the farming community.

In Inishowen it will be split into two groups of farmers coming from South Inishowen and North Inishowen and will cover a series of topics including Farm Safety, Healthy Eating, Mental health talks, Health checks and Fitness sessions.

As part of the programme, the farmers will gather and enjoy a complimentary hot meal together.

IDP’s Farm Family Officer Joe Sweeney says this is an important part of the FIT4FARMLIFE programme as it will be an opportunity for farmers to talk to each other and listen to each other.

“The FIT4FARMLIFE programme addresses a lot of the issues that are facing farmers,” says Joe.

“Getting people together and breaking bread is so important for social inclusion and ultimately for their mental health.”

As part of the programme, IDP are teaming up with the local Sláintecare Healthy Communities team to introduce healthy eating habits and cooking tips.

Patricia Lee, IDP Team Lead for the Health and Wellbeing Team, says they have run similar programmes before with their Community Nutrition Officer Niamh Britton and they have proved very popular with famers.

She said they are looking forward to the opportunity to working with the farmers – many of whom IDP have built a close relationship with through Farm Family Officer Joe Sweeney over the past two decades.

“There is no doubt that these are challenging and difficult times for many farmers throughout Inishowen,” says Patricia.

“By offering FIT4FARMLIFE, IDP will provide farmers with the opportunity to address the many challenges they face, whilst ensuring first and foremost that they mind their mental health and their physical health and that they continue to be fit safe and well.”

Joe Sweeney and Patricia with new Fit4FARMLIFE recruits Gerard McGlinchey and James Breslin

The programme will conclude with a large Health & Wellbeing Event in Ballyliffin Lodge Hotel on Wednesday October 30th where both the North and South Inishowen groups will come together with their farm families, as supporters of participants and to hear the rural farming voice on what’s needed next.

This will be a chance to look back on what they learned, plan for the next phase with renewed and strengthened relationships.

The South Inishowen group will take place in the Lake of Shadows in Buncrana on Tuesday 15th and 22nd October, with the North Inishowen group meeting in Simpsons Bar, Carndonagh on Thursday 17th and 24th October. Places are available however they are limited, so if you are a farmer and want to get involved call Joe on: 086 6052022.

A man is to stand trial after allegedly conning a Donegal travel agency out of over €4,600 for stays in exclusive hotels.

Alan James McDaid appeared at Letterkenny District Court after being charged with duping Letterkenny-based Liberty Travel over four different bookings.

The independent travel agency claims it was left out of pocket after debit and credit cards belonging to two individuals were dishonestly used to pay for accommodation in Santorini, Majorca and London.

The transactions were later subject to chargeback which left Liberty Travel, at Riverside Retail Park, Letterkenny, at loss of €4,637.

The transaction included €1,254 for four nights at a five-star hotel in Santorini, Greece and €693 for one night at a five-star hotel in London.

Other charges were for a €1,556 four-night stay at a hotel in Majorca and a three-night visit to another hotel in Majorca valued at €1,134.

The charges, which relate to four separate dates in July and August 2017, are contrary to section 7 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.

The 48-year-old, with a listed address in Alcudia, Majorca, Spain, was brought before Letterkenny District Court.

McDaid had previously been released on bail.

Garda Sergeant Gerard Dalton told Letterkenny District Court today that the Director of Public Prosecutions had recommended the accused go forward for trial at the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court.

The court begins its current court sitting on October 29th next.

McDaid’s solicitor, Mr Donough Cleary requested one counsel for his client for the trial.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham applied the alibi warning and adjourned the case to the Circuit Court sittings.

A serving member of the Irish Defence Forces has been ordered to make a €250 donation to charity after being threatening and abusive to Gardai.

The case of Darragh White was called at Letterkenny District Court today.

The 31-year-old soldier is charged with two offences while on a night out in Letterkenny earlier this year.

He is charged with threatening and abusive behaviour and also being intoxicated in a public place.

The court was told that White, of Loughanure, Annagry, was not in court as he was attending a course in preparation of a tour of duty to Lebanon.

Garda Sergeant Gerard Dalton gave details of the incidents which took place at Lower Main Street in Letterkenny in the early hours of March 10th last.

The court was told that gardai had encountered White at 3.05am and spoke to him as he was very drunk and disorientated.

They encountered him again later that night and he had vomit on his clothing and they spoke to him again.

However, he became aggressive and told Gardai to ‘f*** off’ when approached.

He was arrested and taken to Letterkenny Garda Station and charged.

His solicitor, Mr Michael Gillespie, told the court that his client was a member of the Irish Defence Forces and could not be in court as he was undertaking a course in preparation of a tour of duty in Lebanon.

He added that his client had no previous convictions.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham ordered White to pay a donation of €250 to the Little Blue Heroes charity and adjourned the case until December 9th for a receipt of the payment.

Sarah Jessica Parker makes incredible donation to Donegal fashion fundraiser

Sarah Jessica Parker stunned organisers of a Donegal Town fundraiser by donating not one, but three pairs of designer shoes!

The actress is giving a stylish boost to the ‘Say Yes To My Dress’ event, which takes place in The Abbey Hotel in Donegal Town on Saturday 30th November.

The Sex and the City icon has sent three pairs of her SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker heels to be auctioned off on the night.

The kind-hearted gesture has added great excitement to the event, which is tipped to be one of the county’s fashion highlights of the year.

Irish fashionistas Miriam O’Callaghan, Amy Huberman, Sonya Lennon and Jennifer Wrynne have generously donated pre-loved dresses to the glamorous showcase. Dresses will be available to purchase at amazing prices.

Jeanette Kelly, one of the organisers, said that Sarah Jessica Parker took great interest in the cause when she heard about it through a local connection.

“It’s just amazing. She (Sarah Jessica) said she would be so humbled that she could help,” Jeanette said.

“The shoes are so beautiful. We thought there was going to be two pairs of shoes but she sent a third pair we didn’t expect. The boxes and the dust bags have all been signed.”

Stay tuned to Say Yes To My Dress on social media where the shoes will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The three pairs are expected to generate great interest among the ladies of the locality – and hopefully raise great sums for three deserving local causes. The 2015 edition of the event raised an amazing €22,000.

Proceeds from this year’s ‘Say Yes To My Dress’ will fund Sensory Room Equipment at St Francis National School, the refurbishment of Hospice Rooms in Donegal Community Hospital and support the vital work of Solace Cancer Support Centre, Donegal Town.

The auction will also feature signed Republic of Ireland memorabilia from Seamus Coleman, a helicopter ride for five people over Donegal and a fine art painting by Sinéad Gavigan, plus much more.

Organisers Jeanette Kelly, Anne Boyle, and Phyl Gallagher are busy with the preparations for this stylish affair which is already being so well supported by the local community, particularly Lisa Colgan from Get That Trend.

It’s set to be the ultimate pre-Christmas night out and the perfect opportunity to grab a showstopping dress or the ultimate gift.

The distinguished Mr Noel Cunningham is the MC for the night and celebrity stylist Mandy Maher will be compering the fashion show. Expect plenty of fashion advice and a wonderful show of inclusivity.

Guests can look forward to Prosecco on arrival to kick off the festivities, a live performance from the incredible Irish Tenors, and spot prizes such as luxury hotel stays, beauty hampers, and more.

It’s not the first time that Sarah Jessica Parker has supported causes both in Donegal and nationally. In 2011, the Killybegs Women’s Group was thrilled with the arrival of a ‘Le 69’ Paco Rabanne handbag for a local raffle. This summer, SJP supported the youth LGBTQ+ community with a donation of her branded shoes to SuperValu’s Wear with Pride campaign.

Donegal holds a special place in SJP’s heart, as she and her husband Matthew Broderick have a holiday home in Kilcar. The New Yorkers regularly escape city life to retreat to Donegal where they are treated as locals.

So, if you are seeking the perfect dress for an occasion, or want to lock down a girls’ night out before the busy festive season, say YES to ‘Say Yes To My Dress’! Tickets are €27 and available to book now on https://www.eventbrite.com/e/yes-to-the-dress-tickets-1021647454037

PLEASE NOTE – CASH ONLY. There will be no credit / debit card facilities at the venue.

Finn Harps’ chance of promotion play-off frozen out at cold Finn Park

Finn Harps’ First Division campaign will end on Friday against Treaty United after their playoff hopes were shattered at a cold Finn Park this evening.

Finn Harps 1 – 3 Wexford FC

(Report by Stuart Connolly wit pics by Joe Boland)

Only a win was good enough to take the fight to the final day, and Wexford FC, who played over 50 minutes with ten men, boosted their own standing in the league after a victory at Finn Park.

Jamie Watson’s first half strike was quickly cancelled out by a goal from Cian O’Malley, and Wexford were swiftly reduced to ten men after that equaliser.

Darragh Levingston turned the game on its head moments later, and a Cian Curtis spot kick in the final stages brought the game to a disappointing end for the home side.

Darren Murphy made just the one change to his team that drew with Bray Wanderers, and it was an enforced alternation as Conor Tourish was called upon to replace the suspended Noe Baba.

Wexford FC, who confirmed their playoff spot last Friday night, had nine different players in the starting eleven, as only Darragh Levingston and James Crawford retained their places after the victory over Kerry FC.

Finn Harps enjoyed their fair share of the possession in the attacking half, but their only chance of note in the opening quarter of an hour deflected wide after it left the boot of Sean Patton.

Wexford FC’s fortunes in the final third told a similar story, as Mark Hanratty had their only opportunity, one from long range, which flew over the bar.

The next shot from distance came in the 25th minute as Harps broke the deadlock in style.

From 25 yards out, Jamie Watson had limited options but let fly, and his shot arrowed into the bottom left corner beyond the grasp of Alex Moody.

In a five-minute span that started in the 38th minute, the game was completely flipped.

Wexford FC found their equaliser to kick off the crazy few minutes as a quickly taken free kick was whipped across goal by James Crawford, and it rolled invitingly for Cian O’Malley to blast into the bottom left corner.

Less than one minute later, Wexford were reduced to ten men. Success Edogun made an attempt to run down the wing but was hauled down by Crawford, who was shown a second yellow card for his exploits.

Fast forward another two minutes, and Wexford FC took the lead. Reece Webb floated a ball in from the right, and the half clearance allowed Darragh Levingston to take a touch on the edge of the box before a cool finish into the corner, with Cooney rooted to the spot.

Harps began the second half on the front foot, and they had two decent chances to level the game. Patrick Ferry fired the first effort off a yellow shirt, while the second goalbound header from Patton was destined for the back of the net until Moody strongly punched it away.

It was attack against defence as the second half ticked away, and the chances kept popping up for Harps as Edogun flashed an effort narrowly wide with 65 minutes gone.

Harps’ issue with leaving their intentions on all-out attack was the threat of a counter, and with just shy of ten minutes to go, they took a big hit.

Mark Imiren pushed Wexford up the field, and after the ball rolled into his path in the box, he was brought down by Watson as he got a shot off, and a spot kick was the result. Cian Curtis stepped up and calmly slotted it right down the middle to close the curtains on Finn Harps’ season.

Finn Harps: Oisin Cooney; Jamie Watson, Conor Tourish(Bruce Strachan 81), Matthew Makinson, Luke O’Brien; Max Hutchison(Gavin McAteer ht), Ryan Rainey(David Cawley ht), Tony McNamee(Max Johnston 71), Patrick Ferry; Success Edogun, Sean Patton(Gavin Gilmore 71).

Wexford FC: Alex Moody; Reece Webb, Benjamin Lynch, Cian O’Malley, James Crawford; Darragh Levingston(Luka Lovic 71), Conor Crowley(Kian Corbally 71), Mark Hanratty(Sean McHale 60), Adam Lennon(Mark Imiren 80); Kaylem Harnett(Robbie O’Toole 80), Cian Curtis.

The Red Hugh O’Donnell Association from Donegal and the O’Neill Country Historical Society (Dúiche Neill) from Tyrone have organised a very special reunion which will commence at 1pm on Lifford bridge.

Cathaoirleach of Donegal, Clr. Niamh Kennedy and the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane Cllr Lilian Seenoi Barr will be in attendance along with other cross border representatives.

Chairman of the Red Hugh O’Donnell Association, Mr. Eddie Crawford, extends a warm welcome to interested groups, societies, national schools, sports clubs and especially the young people of the area, both local and cross border.

Organ Donor families and grateful transplant recipients from Donegal joined a special service of remembrance and thanksgiving in Dublin at the weekend.

An estimated 1,600 people from across Ireland and beyond converged in the Church of the Holy Child, Whitehall on Saturday for the Irish Kidney Association 39th Annual Service.

Éilis Carlin, from Cloghan, Donegal, brought a picture of her son Tony who was 25 when he passed away in 2019.

She said, “the decision to donate his organs, saving four lives, was an easy one, as we knew we were following his wishes”.

Seamy McDermott, from Ballybofey told Virgin Media TV News that he received a kidney from his deceased donor twenty-two and a half years ago.

Seamy said, “Every morning I wake up and say a wee prayer to my donor. I wouldn’t be here today but for my donor”.

This unique service was an important occasion for people of all beliefs to remember deceased loved ones who have in their death given the gift of life to others. It’s an opportunity for grateful transplant recipients, their families and the wider organ donation and transplant community including Organ Donation Transplant Ireland, organ donor coordinators and transplant coordinators, and other healthcare professionalsto give thanks and pay tribute to organ donors for their precious gifts of life.

Following the Service, organ donor families viewed the name of their deceased donor loved one inscribed in the Book of Remembrance, a roll of honour for organ donors.

Paddy Diver questions election strategy of 100% Redress

Defective blocks campaigner Paddy Diver has spoken out with scepticism over the 100% Redress Party’s general election bid.

The party today announced that Charles Ward will go forward to seek election to the Dáil.

But independent campaigner Diver says the decision doesn’t have the backing of all campaigners.

Diver said he has major concerns that the election bid will split votes away from Sinn Féin, who he is openly backing to deliver an end-to-end scheme.

“I’m in the middle of the redress scheme and I personally know how much someone shouting from the sidelines will not benefit somebody that can actually deliver something,” Diver said.

“As long-term seasoned campaigners, we want to hear it out from 100% Redress, what was the benefit of this because at the minute, we are sceptical of the end to end goal to help families get out of this nightmare and get on with their lives.

“Would it not be more beneficial to be vigorously campaigning against Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, who have let this county down for years, and reach out to the other affected counties, and try and help Sinn Féin get into government and deliver end-to-end?”

He added: “We see this has the potential to split the votes and undo a lot of work by campaigners.”

“Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will be laughing at this, they know the people affected the most by this will be Thomas Pringle and Padraig MacLochainn.”

Diver said his statement is ‘nothing personal’ against Charles Ward.

Ward ran in the Lifford-Stranorlar MD in June, gaining 985 overall votes.

“I don’t want to be going against Charles Ward on his first day of running for a TD position,” Diver said.

“But I am very sceptic and worried about the benefits of this, what harm it’s going to do to the goal of end-to-end.”

Diver said the self-build route requires too much money upfront, and contractors, with rising prices, are not a viable option either.

“End-to-end is the goal,” he said. “I am in the middle of this and can see that.

“If we have one chance to make a difference, that is to put the shoulder to the wheel and help Sinn Féin deliver end-to-end, I don’t know why anyone would stand in the way of that.”

Cassidys given eight week extension by High Court to supply discovery documents

The Donegal company at the centre of the defective blocks scandal has told the High Court it will cost €100,000 for it to comply with discovery requirements.

A class action being taken on behalf of around 2,000 homeowners affected by defective concrete has been further stalled at the High Court.

A case on behalf of Defective Blocks Ireland CLG by Coleman Legal was heard at the Commercial High Court in Dublin yestrday.

Mr Justice Denis McDonald granted an application on behalf of Cassidy Brothers Concrete Products Ltd for an extension of time to comply with discovery. Two deadlines had already been missed in the matter, but Cassidy Brothers Concrete Products Ltd were given an eight-week extension by Mr Justice McDonald.

The company sought an extension of eight weeks to comply.

The company is required to hand over hundreds of thousands of documents related to the case. The company’s solicitor, Mr Eamonn Dillon, has told the court of how Cassidy Brothers Concrete Products Ltd had encountered difficulty given the voluminous documentation required.

However the High Court has been told that the firm has accessed the required documentation, but must now upload the vast reams to a digital format.

The High Court has been told that Cassidy Brothers Concrete Products Ltd have been quoted €100,000 by a specialist company to carry out this process. This would, Mr Dillon said, take a lot of time and money.

The other defendants in the case are Donegal County Council and the National Standards Authority of Ireland.

Fish producers call to ban Norway from Irish waters

Fish producers have issued a call to the European Commission to ban Norway from fishing in Irish waters.

The Killybegs-based Irish Fish Producers Organisation claims Norway’s overfishing practices are the main cause of a *scientifically recommended mackerel quota cut of 22% next year, which will hit Ireland hardest.

The IFPO say Ireland’s small fishing fleet stands to lose over €10 million in 2025 from the mackerel cut, because we have the largest share of the EU western mackerel quotas. “This is a hammer blow for Ireland as we already lost 26 % of our mackerel allowance to the UK in the Brexit deal,” says IFPO chief executive, Aodh O Donnell.

The IFPO say this is the third year in a row of quota cuts which threaten the viability of Ireland’s mackerel fishing fleet and the onshore fish processing sector.

“Every European country has a responsibility to fish sustainably to protect fish stocks,” says Aodh O Donnell, chief executive of the IFPO. “The EU and Irish fishers have managed the shared mackerel stocks sustainably. But non-EU member, Norway, has been setting unilateral quotas and overfishing.”

The IFPO shared this example: the EU signed a deal permitting Norway to fish almost 200,000 Metric Tonnes (MT) of blue whiting in Ireland’s EU fishing waters this year. In comparison, Ireland is permitted to catch less than 60,000 MT of blue whiting in our own waters. Norway’s deal is worth about €50m while Ireland’s quota is worth just €15m, and Ireland got almost nothing out of this deal, says the IFPO.

The IFPO say it’s time to ban Norway and other non-EU States from fishing in Irish waters unless there is a reciprocal exchange in fish quotas for us. “Norway only appreciates their adversary if they adopt a tough position, so it’s time the EU stepped up for Ireland.”

“The IFPO wants a renegotiation of the Norway-EU blue whiting deal, in a way which benefits Ireland proportionately, as similar deals do for our sister EU states. Otherwise, non-EU access must be blocked and we must make this an election issue for our coastal communities.

“We have a new EU Parliament and Commission and change is needed now. The Irish Government must demand parity of treatment for Ireland’s fishing industry on this issue at EU level.”
