Popular Inishowen man appointed Garda Inspector in Glenties

A Garda Sergeant from Clonmany has been promoted to the rank of Inspector and will be based in Glenties.

Newly-appointed Inspector Sean McDaid will replace the outgoing Inspector Rosaleen Logue from this week in the Glenties Garda District.

The Inishowen native has been a Sergeant based at Buncrana Garda Station most recently and has acted as the court presenter at sittings of the local District Court.

At last week’s sitting of Buncrana District Court, tributes were paid to Inspector McDaid. Inspector Paul Gallagher told the court of the promotion and said he wished to convey his own congratulations and that of the force.

Buncrana-based solicitor Ciaran Mac Lochlainn said Inspector McDaid was a very experienced officer with whom he had built a solid working relationship.

Before being transferred to Buncrana, where he was stationed for eight years, Inspector McDaid previously worked in Dublin and Ballyshannon.

“Glenties’ gain is Buncrana’s loss,” Mr Mac Lochlainn said. “He has a great insight into the backgrounds of the young people who are before the courts and he is able to deal with matters in a very fair and open manner.

“He is big into the GAA and has been involved in refereeing too. He is well respected in his position and he will be a loss to Buncrana, no doubt.

“Hopefully he will make his way back to Inishowen.”

A motorbike enthusiast, Inspector McDaid was previously a member of the Traffic Corps.

Inspector McDaid said he was looking forward to the new role, if not the daily Clonmany-Meenaroy journey.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham also paid tribute and wished Inspector McDaid well in his new role.

Sergeant Emmet Brady will be the court presenter at Buncrana District Court while the Buncrana Garda District is also set to have a new inspector.

Inspector Johnny Sweeney has been newly promoted and will fill the void left by Inspector McDaid. Inspector Sweeney, a former Buncrana-based sergeant, was previously a Detective Sergeant in the Letterkenny Garda District.

Donegal man crept into woman’s bed at family gathering and sexually assaulted her

A man who crept into a woman’s bed and sexually assaulted her during a family gathering in Co Donegal has received a suspended jail sentence and ordered to pay his victim €5,000.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, appeared at Letterkenny District Court.

He faced one charge of sexually assaulting a woman at a location in Donegal in February 2020.

Garda Sergeant Gerard Dalton outlined the details of the incident.

The court was told that the victim and the accused man had both been at a family gathering at a house in Donegal.

The woman had gone upstairs to a bedroom with her young child but the child did not settle and was taken to another room by a relative.

The woman slept on in the bedroom alone.

However, some time later a man came into the room and got into the bed beside her while she slept.

He began grinding himself against her and kissing at her neck and attempting to pull the woman towards him.

Both were fully clothed during the incident, the court was told.

The woman told Gardai that she noticed someone was behind her in the bed and could feel him grinding into her with his crotch touching her backside.

She initially froze but then told the person to get out but when she got no response she shouted at the person to “get the f*** out.”

The person got up and walked out but did not speak and the woman said she recognised the man as he left the bedroom.

The victim said she lay in the bed and was upset and eventually went downstairs, called her partner and left the house with her baby.

The woman said she found bruising on the top of her back and also had a ‘hickey’ at the side of her neck.

Gardai were informed of the incident, the scene was preserved while statements and fingerprints were also taken.

The victim attended the Sexual Assault and Trauma Unit where photos and swabs were taken from her.

The woman also attended counselling sessions but that had to be discontinued because of the arrival of the Covid pandemic.

The accused man was arrested under the Criminal Law Act and taken to Letterkenny Garda Station where he was questioned and samples of his DNA were taken.

He was interviewed twice but said he had consumed a large quantity of alcohol and could not remember anything later in the evening.

He was shown a printout of a Facebook page on which he tried to message the victim but the man said again that he had no recollection of the events but said he could not believe that he had carried this out.

Details of swabs taken by the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit were sent to Forensic Science Ireland and were examined by Dr Charlotte Murphy, a forensic scientist.

Dr Murphy said she examined the victim’s dress and carried out DNA profiling of the dress and that sample matched the DNA of the accused.

She also examined DNA from the woman’s shoulder and it was a mix of DNA from a male and a female and that both the accused person’s DNA and the victim’s DNA were present in the profile.

Dr Murphy added that the evidence was very strong to support that the accused kissed the victim’s neck and shoulder rather that he did not.

Solicitor for the accused man, Mr Rory O’Brien, said his client has expressed deep remorse for what he had done and is acutely aware of the distress he has caused to the woman as well as the physical and emotional impact it has had on the woman.

He said the incident occurred under a significant amount of alcohol and that he was “devastated” to allow himself to get into such a state of inebriation.

Mr O’Brien added that that incident was completely out of character for his client and that his family did not recognise the person who had carried out such an incident.

The accused man, who wept during the hearing, was supported in court by his sister.

His solicitor added that this was an “aberration” for his client’s normal actions and that he now holds himself in deep shame, embarrassment and remorse.

However, Mr O’Brien pointed to the Probation and Welfare Report carried out on his client which he said was very favourable.

He added that the report underscores his client’s remorse, the steps he is taking to address his alcohol dependency by attending AA meetings daily and also the fact that he pleaded guilty and is also deemed as being at a low risk of reoffending.

Mr O’Brien added “The darkness that has followed him fro this case is ever present and he is trying his best to remedy the situation as best he can.”

He added that there is a significant fall-out within the family as a result of the incident.

The accused man’s solicitor pleaded with the court to take all these factors into account before sentencing adding “This is a very sad and troubling case but he has presented as a very different individual.”

Judge Eiteain Cunningham said this was indeed a very serious charge and that she had considered both the Probation Report and the Victim Impact Statement.

She noted the Probation Report is positive after the accused engaged fully with the Probation Services and had at all times displayed remorse towards his victim.

He had also been assessed and deemed of being of a low risk of reoffending and had no previous convictions of this nature apart from minor traffic offences.

The Judge said that in the circumstances she was going to impose a ten month prison sentence but suspend that sentence for 18 months on condition of the accused entering into a Section 99 to follow the terms of the conditions imposed by the Probation Services.

She also ordered the man to pay his victim the sum of €5,000 which was to be paid within the next 12 months.

Everything adds up as maths teacher Paddy retires after 34 years at Deele College

It was a bittersweet day for the Deele College community in Raphoe on Friday afternoon last, as they said farewell to well-known and hugely popular maths teacher, Mr Paddy Flood.

A true Dublin, Paddy has been an integral member of the teaching staff in Deele College for 34 years and he has left quite an impression during his tenure in the school.

A renowned mathematics teacher, Paddy was always on hand to help students in any way he could.

During his retirement function, it was noted how he was always the first to arrive in the school and always the last to leave.

He taught Applied Maths before school started and he often stayed behind to help his Leaving Cert classes with Higher Level exams. He did all of this in a voluntary capacity and will be remembered by all his students for his willingness to help them achieve their potential.

Mr Flood began his career in his native Dublin but the love of a Donegal woman was enough to take him north to Donegal, where he became such a valued member of not only Deele College, but the St Eunan’s GAA Club and indeed Donegal Hurling.

Staff members were keen to express their thanks to Paddy for all his help as a TUI Union Rep, where he helped young teachers beginning their teaching careers and to anyone who needed his expert knowledge over the the years.

Principal, Mr Joe Boyle paid tribute to Mr Flood, telling the assembled gathering that there were many evenings when he locked the door after six and the alarm would go off, which meant that it could only be Mr Flood still explaining an equation to his 6th years.

He said that his dedication and diligence would never be forgotten by the many cohorts he had taken through to Leaving Cert.

Deputy Principal, Ms Carmel Mulligan said that Mr Flood’s reputation as a Maths teacher was second to none.

He was known throughout the county and indeed nationally for his work in the subject. She also noted that Paddy was not fond of paper work, plans or schemes of work but that he could enter any classroom and deliver an exceptional lesson.

She said that when she thought of Paddy, she always thought of the old saying, “a truly great teacher is hard to find, difficult to part with and impossible to forget.” She added that it was a line that was simply made for Paddy.

The staff at Deele College would like to wish him all the best in his retirement.

And while the staff won’t miss the smell of burnt toast in the afternoon, his presence will be missed throughout the school!

Darragh Kelly inspires Crana karate kids in MMA masterclass

Local karate kids were treated to a mixed martial arts masterclass when MMA professional Darragh Kelly was welcomed to Crana Karate Club.

‘The Moville Mauler’ joined Sensei Seamus Gillespie and his young guns, coaching them through some of the moves that have helped propel his already impressive career with Bellator MMA.

As his professional pedigree in the sport continues to blossom, the 26 year-old star took the time to work with both the junior and senior Saturday classes held at Buncrana Youth Club.

Fresh from his impressive points win over undefeated Ukrainian Dmytrii Hrytsenko in the OVO Wembley Arena in London in September, Kelly was only too happy to help inspire the Inishowen youngsters.

When asked by one young karateka if he ever feels nervous when facing an opponent, Kelly had some words of wisdom for the kids.

“You are going to be nervous regardless. I still get nervous going into a fight. Being nervous is a good thing. You can look at it in two ways: you can see it as a bad thing or interpret it as being excited to compete.

“Always try to take a positive out of it, if you feel nervous in any situation make sure to tell yourself you are excited and go out to do your best.”

Crana Karate Club instructor Seamus Gillespie said the club members were delighted to host the MMA star.

“Darragh is an impressive professional and a great person. It was incredible to watch him coach our kids at Crana Karate Club. It’s not every week, you get the chance to train with a martial arts star and it really inspired us all.

“We hope to welcome Darragh back again at some stage in the future and wish him many successes in his professional career.”

Kelly is looking forward to fighting on familiar home soil once again next February, having defeated Hrytsenko in what was his first professional event outside the country last month.

His next opponent and venue have yet to be announced, but he will be seeking to extend his winning record of 7-0 as a professional and 16-0 as a mixed martial artist.

The Moville man has two fights left on his four-fight deal with Bellator MMA and two more wins will see him professionally ranked. And he knows that being ranked will pave the way to a title shot should he accumulate a couple of further wins on the bounce.

But for now, only the next fight is on his mind.

“At this stage, I’ll be keeping my training consistent, and keep making improvements to ensure I’m in peak condition for February.”

Donegal student honoured with prestigious Naughton Scholarship

Daria Kolomiychuk, a former student of Errigal College in Letterkenny, has made history as the only recipient from County Donegal to be awarded the prestigious Naughton Foundation Scholarship this year.

The scholarship, worth €24,000, was presented at a ceremony on Saturday October 12th in Trinity College, Dublin, by founding patrons Dr. Martin Naughton and his wife Carmel, joined by An Taoiseach Simon Harris.

The award recognises academic and innovative excellence in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Pictured above (L-R): Mr. Danny McFadden (Principal of Errigal College), Mr. Martin Naughton, Mrs. Carmel Naughton, Ms. Daria Kolomiychuk (Class of 2024), Mr. Simon Harris (Taoiseach)

Daria, who moved to Ireland from Ukraine just a few years ago, has accepted a place at University College Dublin, where she is pursuing a degree in Biomedical Health & Life Sciences.

Her remarkable achievement places her among 37 of Ireland’s top students, all of whom were awarded third-level scholarships to support their studies in STEM disciplines.

Errigal College’s Principal, Mr. Danny McFadden, expressed his immense pride in Daria’s success.

He said “Daria’s accomplishment is a testament not only to her dedication and hard work but also to the supportive and innovative learning environment that Errigal College strives to provide.

“We are committed to excellence in education and to encouraging our students to pursue careers in STEM fields. This award highlights the impact of our continued efforts to promote STEM subjects and opportunities for all.”

The Naughton Foundation Scholarship is a significant investment in the future of Irish students, with over €6 million awarded to more than 450 exceptional scholars since its establishment in 2008.

Each scholarship is worth €6,000 per academic year for the duration of a student’s undergraduate degree. One student from each participating county is guaranteed to receive the scholarship, with some counties seeing more than one recipient.

In addition, Daria’s former school, Errigal College, received a prize of €1,000 to enhance its science facilities in recognition of the school’s role in fostering academic excellence.

Daria’s scholarship success highlights Errigal College’s ongoing commitment to fostering a passion for STEM subjects among its students. The school continues to encourage young women to pursue studies and careers in traditionally male-dominated fields like engineering and technology, contributing to a more diverse and inclusive future workforce in Ireland.

As Daria embarks on her next chapter at UCD, her journey emphasises the vital role Errigal College plays in providing a strong educational foundation and fostering a commitment to academic excellence. Her success showcases the opportunities that arise when students are nurtured in an environment dedicated to supporting them to achieve their educational potential.

Health Minister confirms funding for Donegal cancer charities

Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, has announced funding is on the way to two vital charities for cancer patients in Donegal – Cancer Care West Donegal, and Donegal Cancer Flights & Services.

The services are members of the Alliance of Community Cancer Support and Servics, which has been allocated €5.5 million in Budget 2025.

The allocation comes amid serious concerns that the passenger cap at Dublin Airport could affect the regional service at Carrickfinn Airport.

The Donegal – Dublin flights are used by 430 cancer patients who are supported by the Donegal Cancer Flights & Services charity.

Raising patients’ concerns in the Dáil last week, Deputy Pearse Doherty from Sinn Féin said the passenger cap should not apply to a public service obligation service that is relied on for health travel and tourism.

Deputy Doherty pointed out that airline operating the service has been told it has to reduce its passenger numbers by 5%.

“The chairperson of the airline has said that this brings the viability of the service into question,” Deputy Doherty told Tanáiste Micheál Martin, who replied: “That has to stop. We need regional connectivity. The north west particularly suffers from a lack of connectivity by rail and by road, because of the A5 debate. We have to keep the air links to the north west open. If I had my way, I would prefer Derry to also have an air connection. This is something that can and needs to be sorted.”

Donegal Cancer Flights & Services issued a statement on Monday to assure passengers that there are no changes as of now: “There’s a lot of talk in the media regarding flights to Dublin which could possibly affect DCFS. Please rest assured that we are working in conjunction with political representatives to ensure that this will not happen. For now there are no flight distributions, we will keep you updated on our progress.”

On the funding allocation, Minister Donnelly said: “Centres like Cancer Care West Donegal and Donegal Cancer Flights & Services provide vital services for cancer patients in communities throughout Ireland, both adults and children. They do tremendous work to ensure that national survivorship programmes are available all across Ireland. This government places great value on the dedication of the staff and volunteers who make these centres possible.

“I was pleased as Minister for Health to allocate once-off state funding to our community support service for the first time in 2024. This year’s allocation of €5.5 million represents an increase in this funding in 2025 and it will become permanent, annual funding.”

Exhibition of Donegal people who worked in Scotland gathers momentum

The Culture Division of Donegal County Council in partnership with the Mellon Centre for Migration Studies is preparing a major exhibition on the historical context, working conditions and types of employment that Donegal men and women found in Scotland between 1940 and 1990.

This could include those who worked in seasonal work for parts of the year or those who settled in Scotland or those who returned to Donegal in later years.  The exhibition will be launched in the Donegal County Museum, Letterkenny, County Donegal in spring 2025 .

“There has been a good response so far following the call-out for photographs and memories of Donegal men and women at work in Scotland between 1940 and 1990” explained Joseph Gallagher, County Donegal Heritage Officer.

He added “We want to hear from Donegal people who worked in Scotland especially those who have a story to tell, photographs to share or documents and small objects to lend that could form part of this exhibition.

“The project will focus on a variety of industries and workplaces in Scotland from 1940 to 1990 including farms, buses, railways, building sites, engineering projects (such as tunnels, bridges, dams or hydro-electric schemes), shipbuilding, domestic service, hotels, shops, biscuit or chocolate factories, health service, religious life and teaching.”

With funding secured from The Heritage Council and the Creative Ireland programme as part of the implementation of the new County Donegal Heritage Plan, staff from Donegal County Council and the Mellon Centre for Migration Studies hosted three very successful drop-in events in Glasgow and Edinburgh in early October to provide more information on the forthcoming exhibition, to scan photographs of Donegal people at work in Scotland and to record Donegal people’s memories of their working lives in Scotland.

“The drop-in events were held in the Scottish Football Museum, Hampden Park, Glasgow; Glasgow City Chambers; and the Irish Consulate in Edinburgh” continued Mr. Gallagher.  “We’re grateful to the Irish Consulate, Glasgow City Chambers and the Donegal Scottish Diaspora Group for facilitating the visit.  Former Celtic and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper and current Donegal Diaspora Ambassador Packie Bonner attended all the events.  Over 170 people attended the events and we scanned about 190 images of photographs and documents, and recorded 30 memories from Donegal people who worked in Scotland.”

Commenting on the Donegal Emigrant Working Lives in Scotland events in Glasgow and the preparation of the exhibition, Bailie Annette Christie of Glasgow City Council said “The turnout for this heritage event demonstrates the appetite for Glaswegians to engage with heritage wherever they hail from.  Supporting the Donegal project is particularly important as the contribution of ordinary people from the Irish community who built Glasgow has often been overlooked or considered too ordinary to be recorded.

“It compliments the award from our 850 festival fund for an Irish Roots project by the Govanhill Baths Community Trust.  The visit is an important milestone in the run-up to celebrating our 850th birthday next year.  The visit follows on closely from discussions with Dublin and Belfast about links between our cities and the Donegal team visit further enhances these bonds.  I’m looking forward to the exhibition coming to Glasgow in the future.”

If you would like to contribute photographs, memories, documents or other material to the exhibition, please contact the County Donegal Heritage Office, Donegal County Council on (074) 916 3824 or by e-mail at donegalscotland@donegalcoco.ie
