Councillor Jack Murray is appealing to anyone travelling to Malaga today to get in touch with him.

Cllr Murray says a local woman is currently stranded in the Spanish resort as her passport is out of date.

“A local woman needs her passport brought over as she accidentally travelled on an out of date one and can’t board her flight home,” he said.

“Any help would be greatly appreciated.”

Former Inishowen hotel ‘no longer under consideration’ as IPAS centre

An Inishowen TD has said he has been informed that a former local hotel is ‘no longer under consideration’ for the accommodation of asylum seekers.

Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn said the pressed government officials over plans to convert the Strand Hotel, Ballyliffin, for use as an International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) Centre.

The hotel closed to the public in October, 2022, following the retirement of the previous owners.

The Sinn Fein TD said the owners have applied to Donegal County Council for a ‘planning exemption’ to use the building for temporary accommodation.

“I am aware of the application from the owners of the Strand Hotel, Ballyliffin to turn it into an IPAS Centre and I am totally opposed to it,” Deputy MacLochlainn said.

“We are coping with a deep defective block crisis and Donegal has shouldered more centres for Ukrainian refugees and asylum seekers than any other county.”

However, he said, the relevant government department told him the hotel was no longer being considered as an IPAS centre.

“A few weeks ago, I received the following response from the government officials who deal with IPAS centres,” he said.

The department confirmed it did receive an offer of accommodation in respect of the Strand Hotel, Ballyliffin, but the property “is no longer under consideration”.

Last Friday, Deputy MacLochlainn added, he contacted the department again for ‘absolute assurance’ that should this planning exemption be granted, the owners will not secure a contract.

“The community in Ballyliffin and Inishowen need to be heard. This cannot go ahead,” he concluded.

Over 1,200 took part in today’s hugely successful North West 10K in perfect weather conditions in Letterkenny.

Running since 1996, this year’s colourful run and walk was the 28th to be held and almost €1 million has been raised for 40 charities during that time.

This year’s chosen charities are Donegal Horizons CLG and Multiple Sclerosis Donegal Branch.

Finn Valley AC’s Sean McGinley was the first over the line in Letterkenny this morning.

He finished in 30:31, just six seconds ahead of Letterkenny AC’s Danny Mooney in a tight race.

The women’s race was won by LAC’s Nakita Burke.

Cause of Doagh Famine Village identified as fund reaches €31,000

Forensic investigators have identified the probable cause of the fire which caused huge damage to Doagh Famine village.

The popular Inishowen tourist attraction was badly damage din the blaze which began on Saturday last.

Now owner Pat Doherty says a small compressor may have been the root cause of the blaze.

Mr Doherty and his sister Majella started building the much-lived tourist attraction 30 years ago and it is visited by tens of thousands of people each year.

He told the Irish Times that “a small [air] compressor” behind one of the displays was most likely the fire’s source.

“The compressor, it pumped air to make one of the displays move. That machine just, there was either a loose wire or she just overheated, and with all the dry grass it took off and the fire spread quickly,” he said. A strong sea breeze accelerated the blaze, he added.

“We seen just a small fire. There was a motorbike group in from Cavan and they evacuated everybody. They tried to put it out but it was just too fast.”

Mr Doherty said there had been about 50 visitors at the attraction at the time but thankfully nobody one was injured.

There has been a huge outpouring of sympathy form the local community following the fire.

Man y fellow businesses across the Inishowen peninsula have also expressed their sympathy for Mr Doherty and the damage caused to his unique attraction.

A Go Fund Me account set up yesterday to help rebuild the damaged attraction has already raised more than €31,000.

Sunshine to continue across Donegal up until next Sunday at least

The high pressure is still in charge – that’s the message from Met Eireann.

The good news is that there promises to be sunshine across the county this week with just the very odd shower.

And even better is the news that the good weather is set to last until at least next Sunday.

Today will be dry and sunny across most areas today though possibly turning a little cloudier across northern and western areas later. Mild with top temperatures of 14 to 19 degrees in just light variable breezes.

Tonight will be dry, calm and generally clear. A chilly night however with lowest temperatures of 0 to 6 degrees.

Wednesday will bring a mix of sunshine and cloud with just the slight chance of a light shower. Another mild or warm day with top temperatures of 14 to 20 degrees, warmest further west, in just light northeasterly or variable breezes.

According to the national forecaster, there’s a chance of some light showers at times but overall plenty of dry weather and sunshine in store for the rest of the week.

And the forecast for the coming weekend is just as good with current indications suggesting there will be plenty of dry and sunny weather, though some patchy light rain is possible at times, particularly in western parts.

Ceoltóirí Canóla makes history as first Irish Barbershop quartet to qualify for USA contest!

Ceoltóirí Canóla, an all-female teen Barbershop quartet from Donegal, is set to represent Ireland on the International stage in Denver, Colorado this summer.

The award-winning quartet has qualified for the International Barbershop Harmony Society’s Convention.

They have made history by becoming the first Irish quartet to qualify for the prestigious Varsity Quartet Contest at this global event.

Their qualification for this competition is a monumental achievement for both the quartet and the Irish Barbershop community, as they prepare to compete against some of the world’s best young quartets.

“We’re beyond excited and incredibly honoured to represent Ireland on the international stage,” says Sadbh Breathnach, the lead singer of Ceoltóirí Canóla.

“Competing in Denver will be a dream come true, and we’re so grateful for the support we’ve received so far.”

Formed in late 2023, the quartet brings together four talented young secondary school students: Alice O’Connor (Soprano), Sadbh Breathnach (Lead), Katie Coyle (Baritone), and Síne Ó hAodha (Bass). Their musical journey began within Danu Young Women’s Choir, under the guidance of their choir director, Douglas Carnes, who helped nurture their shared passion for vocal harmony and teamwork.

In just a short time, Ceoltóirí Canóla has captured the attention of both judges and audiences alike, thanks to their powerful performances and unique approach to Barbershop harmony.

Ceoltóirí Canóla quickly made a name for themselves in the Barbershop community. In their debut at the Irish Association of Barbershop Singers (IABS) competition in 2023, they earned first place in the Youth Quartet category, marking their arrival on the national stage. But their biggest achievement came in 2024, when they were crowned IABS National Quartet Champions.

With their national title under their belts, Ceoltóirí Canóla has set their sights on Denver, but they need need help to get there. The costs associated with traveling to the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Convention are significant, and the quartet has launched a Go Fund Me campaign to raise funds for their trip.

The support of the community will help cover travel, accommodation, and competition expenses as they prepare to represent Donegal, and Ireland, on the global stage.

You can support Ceoltóirí Canóla and be part of their incredible journey by donating to their Go Fund Me campaign here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-ceoltoiri-canola-reach-denver-internationals

Pro-Palestine campaigners call for action on Occupied Territories Bill

The Inishowen branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign organised a demonstration in Carndonagh last Friday seeking action from Donegal Minister of State Charlie McConalogue to support the enactment of the Occupied Territories Bill.

Donegal IPSC marked “99 days of inaction” by protesting outside Minister McConalogue’s office with signs and symbolic demonstrations, including holding up red hands symbolising the hands of the government.

Campaigners want the government to immediately enact the Occupied Territories Bill to ban trade between Ireland and Israel’s settlements in the West Bank and to make urgent progress on the Arms Embargo Bill.

A letter written to Minister McConalogue by the Donegal IPSC urges him to use his position to encourage Fianna Fáil to uphold its pre-election commitment on the Occupied Territories Bill.

“The people of Donegal have stood in solidarity with the Palestinians and their right to seek justice and live in peace, free of occupation and apartheid,” campaigners said.

“Before the general election, the outgoing government committed to passing the Occupied Territories Bill (OTB) as a priority if re-elected. Now, to our dismay, it appears that there are attempts to delay and weaken, even undermine, the Bill.”

Campaigners held a minutes’ silence on Friday to mourn the loss of over 60,000 civilians in Gaza, the majority of which are women and children.

They said: “We banged empty pots and pans to  highlight the forced starvation policy that the people in Gaza suffer and are now dying from in increasing numbers since the total blockade by Israel of all aid, food, clean water, and medicine for 60 days ago now.”

“We urge everyone to hold our politicians accountable and demand urgent and effective action, honour the obligations under International Law. Pass the Occupied Territories Bill Now in full as a first step. We ended our letter to Minister McConalogue thus: ‘We are calling on you, Minister McConalogue to make our voice, that of your constituents, heard in the Dáil and express our utter outrage at the Government not holding Israel accountable.'”

Donegal’s longest-running bench warrant is out for 23 years

There are 1,426 outstanding bench warrants in Donegal, it has been revealed.

The longest running warrant in Donegal dates back to 31st July 2001, while there are 988 outstanding warrants older than 12 months.

Across the country there is a total of 49,449 outstanding warrants.

The longest in the country dates back to 1971 in North Central Dublin.

The stats were recently provided to Labour Party TD Alan Kelly.

Commenting on the figures, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said: “While the Garda Commissioner is, by law, responsible for the management and administration of Garda business, including the allocation of Garda resources in respect of identified operational demands, I am assured that An Garda Síochána execute warrants as expeditiously as possible, giving priority to the execution of warrants relating to serious crimes.

“The execution of warrants, including bench warrants, can be impeded by persons actively seeking to evade detection and where limited identification information might be available to support enforcement.

“This data also reflects an accumulation of old bench warrants and therefore may not be a reliable indicator of the number of ‘live’ warrants which are actually enforceable.”

Figures were collated based on PULSE data as of 27 April 2025 and are operational and may be liable to change.

Successful prostate cancer walk sends out important message

A charity walk from Mountcharles to Downings was hailed a huge success at the weekend as two men conquered 100km and raised vital awareness of prostate cancer.

Joe Coyle, Thomas Given and supporters finished the walk on Saturday in 27 hours and four minutes, raising over €12,000 for Cancer Care West along the way.

“A huge thank you to everybody for your support along the way, it’s been a long couple of days, we are delighted to get through it,” said Joe at the finish line.

The tough challenge carried a simple but important message – Hi lads, get your prostate checked.

Joe, a prostate cancer survivor, personally benefited from the support of Cancer Care West throughout his treatment in recent years – leading to him wishing to give back to the service. The walking challenge stretched from Joe’s current homeplace, Mountcharles, to Downings, where he grew up.

Thomas joined Joe to do the walk in memory of his late brother, James Given, who passed away last year with cancer.

Their hope for the challenge is to encourage men over 45 to go to their GP and get their PSA number (Prostate Signal Antigen) which is a marker in the blood for Prostate Cancer) and become familiar with it.

“The first test or reading is the most important as all future tests are benchmarked against that one,” said Joe.

A message from Donegal GP and County Coroner Denis McCauley brought home the importance of their mission to highlight the subject of prostate cancer.

Dr McCauley said: “Along with heart disease and bowel cancer it is one of the commonest causes of premature death in males in Ireland. It is relatively straightforward for a general practitioner to rule out its presence by performing a simple examination and a blood test.”

Donations for Cancer Care West Donegal can still be made to: https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/JoeCoyle111. All proceeds go directly to the vital services which the cancer charity provide for men, women and children across Donegal who are on a cancer journey.

Wild Ireland in Burnfoot has announced a fundraising day this Thursday, 8th May, to support the devastated owners of Doagh Famine Village.

All takings at Wild Ireland animal sanctuary this Thursday will be donated to Pat Doherty and his sister Majella, the founders of the historical attraction which was badly damaged in a blaze on Saturday afternoon.

The shocking incident has prompted a widespread show of support from neighbouring tourism operators, businesses and individuals who loved the museum.

A Go Fund Me account set up yesterday to help rebuild the damaged attraction has already raised more than €33,000.

Killian McLaughlin of Wild Ireland in Burnfoot commented that Doagh Famine Village is a place that holds a special place in the heart of Donegal and beyond — “a living story of our past, built with passion by Pat and Majella Doherty”.

“To support their recovery, 100% of ALL ticket sales at Wild Ireland this Thursday, May 8th, will go directly to Pat and Majella,” said a notice on social media.

“We’re asking our community to come out and show their support. A visit to Wild Ireland this Thursday means more than just a day out — it’s a step toward helping rebuild something truly important.

“Let’s come together and help preserve a part of our shared heritage.”
