In an impressive display of endurance, Irish 100k national record holder and LAC athlete Ciaran McGonagle secured a third-place finish at the prestigious Anglo Celtic Plate 100k with a time of 06:59:44.
The event, held on Saturday 3rd May at Mallory Park in Leicester, England, saw Ireland’s elite ultra runners compete on the challenging motor racing circuit.
McGonagle, who holds the Irish 100k record with his exceptional 6:50:28 performance, demonstrated why he is Ireland’s premier ultra-distance athletes. His race strategy was a masterclass in ultra-distance pacing. McGonagle opened with a conservative first lap before settling into a remarkably consistent rhythm, climbing from 11th place to 5th during the crucial middle section of the race.
McGonagle’s average pace was 4:12 per kilometer, which seen him overtake his closest competitors and position himself in second place going into the final lap of the race.
During the final lap, Ciaran went to battle with Englands, Shaun Dixon. Having already covered 95km and running out of fuel, this was now a war of attrition. Ciaran crossed the checkered flag for 3rd place in a time of 06:59:44.
The medal haul continued for McGonagle, as the Anglo Celtic Plate doubled as Athletics Ireland 100km National Championships. Ciaran made it 3 in a row, adding to his national titles from 2024 & 2023.

A woman who hit her partner over the head with a bottle simply had enough of his drinking, a court was told.

Co Donegal Fiona McInerney attacked her former partner after she was “pushed to her wits end.”

Ms McInerney, appeared at Letterkenny District Court after smashing a glass bottle over the man’s head after a verbal altercation on March 5th, 2023.

The court was told that the injured party suffered cuts to his head and shoulder following the attack at Robinson Hall, Port Road, Letterkenny.

The accused, who was present in court, has no previous convictions.

The woman’s solicitor, Mr Frank Murphy, said it was a case that the woman had simply “been pushed too far” and that she was otherwise of good character.

He said that on the night in question the victim had again consumed a large quantity of alcohol.

“She (Ms McInerny) was simply pushed too far. She was at her wits end and had lost it and struck him with a bottle,” said Mr Murphy.

Ms McInerney, aged 40, was charged with a Section 3 assault of the injured party.

A further charge of Production of Article under Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act  was struck out.

The court was told that the couple were no longer in a relationship and were living at separate locations.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham said she would have to canvass for a victim impact statement but said she did not think there was a need for a report from the Probation Services.

She adjourned the case until May 15th next to see if there is a victim impact statement and to finalise sentencing.

There was high energy and lots of hits from Gairmscoil Chú Uladh students who staged a “Back to the 80s/Siúl Siar ar na 80í” in the Balor Theatre in Ballybofey last week.

The two-night production featured a story of heartbreak, resilience and joy with high quality direction, choreography and music throughout.

With their musical director, Kelli Nic Ruaidhrí at the helm, the students put on a vibrant and colourful production with a difference – hits like “Video Killed the Radio Star”, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, and “Come on Eileen” – were all translated into Irish by Ms Mc Ruaidhrí for the show and remained as catchy as ever!

A dedicated and talented cast of students from several different year groups brought this high-energy, feel-good musical to life, and on both nights the audience were thoroughly entertained with a first-rate performance from all. It was an all-hands on deck affair with teachers Master Ó Gallachóir and Master Ó Mainín in cameo roles, and sound and props expertly covered by another team of students. Many thanks to the team in the Balor and all the GCU staff members for their help in making this a truly unforgettable run!

Conclave begins today to select a new pope

Cardinals from around the world have today descended on Rome ahead of the secretive conclave to decide the next pope.

Among the favourites to succeed Pope Francis are are Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Filipino cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle.

White smoke will come from the chimney installed on the roof of the Vatican when agreement on a new Pope is reached.

In a process that has been virtually unchanged for 800 years, 133 cardinals will gather in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel to start multiple rounds of voting and discussion to select who among them could lead the Catholic Church.

The conclave comes after the funeral of Pope Francis at St Peter’s Square on April 26th.

Pope Francis changed the Catholic Church during his 12-year papacy, taking a strong moral stance on climate change in and the plight of migrants and refugees.

He also increased the diversity of cardinals, who will now elect his successor.
