SINN FEIN TO TABLE MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE IN TAOISEACH – DOHERTY

Sinn Fein TD Pearse Doherty has today announced that his party will table a motion of no confidence in An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to be debated and voted on next week.

Pearse Doherty TD

Pearse Doherty TD

The motion will coincide with the Rigth2Water Rally at the Dáil next Wednesday and will reference the Taoiseach’s failure to listen to citizens on the issue of water charges.

Teachta Doherty made his comments at today’s Right2Water press conference in Buswells Hotel where he called for a huge turnout at next week’s rally to deliver the message once again that water charges must be scrapped.

Deputy Doherty said “Sinn Fein is totally opposed to water charges in any shape or form and feel the introduction of such charges, as announced by Government two weeks ago, is a road to yet more hardship for families across Ireland.

“Enda Kenny is still not listening to the core message being conveyed at the water protests, which is that water charge must be scrapped. He is determined to force these charge through against the will of the people. My party will therefore table a motion of no confidence in An Taoiseach which will be debate and voted on next week.

“We know that once these charges are set in motion prices can only go one way, and that is up. Merely capping charges for a short number of years will be of little comfort to people, the length and breadth of the country, who simply cannot afford to pay.

“Sinn Féin will be asking people to make every effort possible to attend next Wednesday’s Dáil rally. The Government’s water charges must be resisted, defeated and scrapped immediately.

“The Government’s parties are on the ropes on this issue. They are punch drunk and I firmly believe next Wednesday’s rally could be the sucker punch.

“Right2Water will be maintaining the family friendly, celebratory atmosphere which had become the hallmark of the demonstrations so far. If next Wednesday’s rally does not deliver the victory we want then we will continue to campaign right up to and including the next election whenever that happens.

“One way or the other Sinn Féin will continue to play a central role in the Right2Water campaign until these unfair and unacceptable water charges are scrapped.”

LIVE REGISTER FIGURES DOWN IN DONEGAL BY 15.33% SINCE LAUNCH OF ACTION PLAN – McGINLEY

Dinny McGinley TD has said the 15.33% drop in the Live Register figure in Donegal since the launch of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs shows that the economy is recovering and that the Government’s plan to create jobs is working.Dinny McGinley

“Nationally the latest CSO Live Register figures show that the unemployment rate has dropped to 10.7% from a high of 15.1% in 2012. Too many people are still out of work but we are moving in the right direction.

“In Donegal, the numbers on the Live Register have fallen from 21267 to 18006 since the launch of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs in 2012 – a decrease of 15.33% Nationally, almost 80,000 jobs have been created, the recovery is broadening across the country, including Donegal.”

The Fine Gael TD for Donegal south-west said the thanks to the sacrifices people have made, it is now possible for the Government to cut taxes to help people in work.

“Every household with somebody in full-time work will be a bit better off from January. We’re committed to reducing personal taxation, to putting money back in people pockets and to growing the economy.

“This Government has made great strides, as is evident from the Live Register figures, but the current high rates of personal taxation need further reform. We need to continue to make work pay and ensure that people in all parts of the country feel the benefit of the growing economy in their pockets and in their lives. That is what we intend to do next year and into the future.

“These figures give us confidence that if we stick with the plan, we can ensure that people’s sacrifices are not wasted, and that we can deliver a consistent, sustainable jobs recovery in Donegal and right across the country.”

Mac LOCHLAINN TELLS DÁIL: ‘ONLY SOLUTION IS TO SCRAP WATER TAXES’

Deputy Padraig Mac Lochlainn

Deputy Padraig Mac Lochlainn

SINN Féin Spokesperson for Justice Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has urged the Government to scrap water charges immediately, in the face of mounting public dissent over the hardship the measures will bring.

Speaking on the Water Services Bill the Dáil today Deputy Mac Lochlainn said: “This Government has come under massive public pressure on water charges. They have been forced to introduce the proposed lower rates. This isn’t something they wanted to do. It’s something they had no choice on. Next Wednesday, however they will be faced with even larger protests.

“Today they can take the opportunity to do the right thing and scrap water charges here and now. I am calling on you to do that. Sinn Féin will be opposing the Government’s Bill as it stands as the only acceptable solution is to abolish water charges, and to dismantle Irish Water.

“Water is a right for all our citizens, the charges being implemented by this Government are unnecessary, unjust and will cause huge hardship to families and communities who have already been devastated by the Government’s relentless pursuit of the austerity agenda.

“These families simply can take no more. You are pushing people over the edge. We have heard so much talk about democratic revolution. There is no democratic revolution in the Dáil. The democratic revolution is on the streets and at the ballot box by ordinary people who say that enough is enough. The continuing trends in the polls show that.

“I am making this call today to urge as many people as possible to turn out for the peaceful protest planned in Dublin on 10 December. I look forward to standing in solidarity with the citizens of this State on Wednesday.

“This Government should own up, admit it is wrong, abolish Irish Water and water charges immediately.”

FORMER EUROPEAN FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR THINKS FINN HARPS KEEPER IS BETTER THAN SIMON MIGNOLET

Gallagher who recently signed back for Finn Harps after a brief spell at bitter rivals Derry City made the claim on social networking site Twitter.

Mignolet has come in for some severe criticism due to his lacklustre performances over the last number of months.

The Finn Harps No.1 is a lifelong Liverpool supporter, and like many of the club’s supporters is growing impatient with the Belgian shot-stopper poor performances.

Gallagher claims that the former European Footballer of the year responded to a tweet in which he proclaimed he was a better keeper than Simon Mignolet.

Owen tweets Gallagher back saying ‘Can’t argue with that @ciarangall1.’

Gallagher took to Facebook and posted a screenshot of the tweet (pictured above) with a caption that read.

‘His response when I tweeted saying I’m a better keeper than Mignolet! He knows the Craic’.

However, the original tweet by Gallagher is nowhere to be seen and Owen looks like he was just responding to Gallagher’s five-a-side team selection.

It was a nice try from Gallagher, however he could be in hot water with Ollie Horgan.

Gallagher makes no secret of the fact he’s attempting to engineer a move away from Finn Park to Anfield in January.

If the talented and affable shot-stopper doesn’t make the move to Liverpool in January, he’s probably earned himself extra running in pre-season next month. :)

Another ‘flood’ has taken place at Letterkenny General Hospital.

Letterkenny General Hospital - another water leak.

Letterkenny General Hospital – another water leak.

The HSE has this evening confirmed the incident at the Clinical Engineering Room and the kitchen construction site took place on Monday last.

It is understood the ‘flood’ was as a result of a rainwater leak.

Both ceilings and plasterboard were badly damaged and had to be replaced.

It is not known at this stage what cost has been put on the damage but Donegal Daily understands it runs into thousands of euro.

The HSE has said that the incident is the responsibility of the contractor.

A spokesman for the communication company for the HSE confirmed “A rainwater leak occurred at the junction of the recently completed Clinical Engineering Room and the kitchen construction site on Monday evening. Ceilings and plasterboard were damaged and had to be replaced. The area will have to be redecorated and cleaned.

“The Contractor for the kitchen contract, who is responsible for the damage, is carrying out remedial works at the moment. The room will be ready for occupation again on Friday morning.”

The leak is the latest in a line of incidents at the hospital.

In the summer of 2013, a massive flood at the hospital has cost up to €40million.

Another smaller flood took place this summer when rainwater came gushing down surrounding fields into the Accident and Emergency Department.

GARDA LOGO 3GARDAI have sealed off the Public Services Centre in Letterkenny after a break-in overnight.

Donegal Daily understands several parts of the centre were broken into, with the motor tax office among the parts of the building broken into.

The centre has been closed and staff told to stay away as Garda forensic officers carry out a meticulous search.

CCTV footage inside and outside the building will give clues to those responsible, gardai say.

The public service centre, run by Donegal County Council, deals with hundreds of people every day, mainly people renewing car tax.

It’s thought cash in the building is kept in a safe there.

HEARTACHE AS EIGHT-YEAR-OLD GIRL ASKS SANTA FOR A MATTRESS FOR CHRISTMAS

DD LOGO 2A COUNTY Donegal girl aged just eight has asked for something very simple for Christmas – a mattress to sleep on.

The child has been sleeping on the floor as her family struggles to cope with life in this country in 2014.

With a great deal of focus, rightly, on the homeless, it can be too easy to forget that some families have a roof over their heads but little else.

Amanda Gamble launched a campaign on social media today in an effort to get a mattress – or a bed – for the child.

“My friend knows a family who wouldn’t have very much, one of the children is just 8years old and is sleeping on the floor and has asked Santa for a bed,” said Amanda.

“The other children share one bed from what I know. This is a genuine ask….if anyone could help please get in touch.”
