WOW! SUPERSTORM SET TO HIT US ON ‘BLACK WEDNESDAY’

stormTHIS is the massive superstorm heading straight for Donegal next week in what is already being dubbed ‘Black Wednesday’.

The storm, packing hurricane-force winds, is set to hit the North West full-on – and last into Thursday, say forecasters.

Ironically the weather pattern is being tracked by surfers keen to catch some of the world’s largest waves.

Ben Freeston, Head Forecaster with surfers website magicseaweed.com warned: “Where a storm might typically cool as it gets closer to becoming reality the last 48 hours have seen model forecasts intensify the call for a giant North Atlantic storm early next week.

“While differing models have been agreeing on the storm for at least the last 48 hours, this morning we see both this agreement and encouraging signs hinting to the storm’s physical development.

“The latest satellite images show the existence of a predicted cluster of storm activity in the Mid Atlantic that’s the precursor to a developing low forecast to be an integral part of our super system.”

However he says the storm may be just a bit too much – even for the best surfers.

“A rapidly deepening low pressure system is forecast to bottom out at 930 millibars and impact Northern Europe in the middle of next week with waves propagating throughout most of the Atlantic’s western fringe,” he said.

“Whilst storms on this scale are difficult to surf at their full intensity (often excepting Mullaghmore) the magnitude is impossible to ignore.

“Last year we regularly saw hurricane force systems like this with names like Hercules breaking records and sea defences, cutting off train lines, and reshaping our coastline. For surfers it is often a case of seeking shelter, or for Black Wednesday, heading south to the lower reaches of Europe / North Africa should score you cleaner waves.”

unnamed-2HE’S a Dub who has made Donegal his home.

And last night (and in the early hours of this morning) Danny O’Carroll got huge amounts of people to make massive donations to two Donegal charities at a wonderful Christmas dinner event at Letterkenny’s Mount Errigal Hotel.

Everyone who was anyone was there.

Super soccer stars Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton (he kept going on about how he was a Buncrana man) joined stars from Mrs Brown’s Boys, Adam (Ian Beale from Eastenders), rugby legend Shane Byrne and ex-world champ Bernard Dunne for the superb charity night.

All the money went to Letterkenny General’s paediatric unit and Lurgbybrack school’s autistic department.

The food was wonderful and the music was fabulous.

And everyone there enjoyed themselves.

Donegal Daily snapped up a pair of signed football boots from our own Seamus Coleman…the pair he wore when he scored against Man U (who are they?)

It was the best €800 we ever spent!

We’d like to now auction those boots to the highest bidder – with every cent going to St Vincent de Paul here in Donegal this Christmas….

Want them? email your bid to info@donegaldaily.com

Damien McNulty puts pen to paper with Harps John Campbell.

Finn Harps have announced that Damien McNulty has re-signed for the 2015 season.

The former Limavady and Coleraine defender was regarded as one of Harps most consistent performers last season, including sterling displays during a cup campaign which culminated in the club reaching its first FAI Cup semi-final since 1999.

Damien was voted by supporters as the young player of the year and was also selected on the first division team of the year.

Damien said “I am delighted to have put pen to paper and committed for the season ahead. I felt last year that we did a lot of things right on and off the park and the squad bought into the professional preparation which has been instilled in the club. If we can add one or two to last year’s squad I think we can push on and put ourselves in the promotion mix. I am really looking forward to meeting up with the rest of the squad in January and get started on our pre-season training regime. “

The Derry native praised the support Harps fans gave the team last season.

“Our supporters were fantastic last year and are one of the reasons I have re-signed. I want to thank them for all the travelling and vocal support they gave us even when we were going through a sticky patch. I think they can see the commitment we have been putting in and with a bit of luck we’ll give them something to be proud of in 2014”, he said.

Finn Harps manager Ollie Horgan said “I am delighted Damien is back on board because he one of those players that gives you the consistency and winning mentality required to compete at senior level. He was terrific for us last season and put in a string of outstanding performances. You need players who have that drive and will to win and Damien brings that to the training pitch and dressing room. It didn’t surprise me that other clubs were interested in signing him but it’s great that Damien is committed to what we are looking to achieve at Finn Park”.

MILFORD GETS NEW ASTRO TURF PITCH

The official opening of the pitch in Milford.

The official opening of the pitch in Milford.

Milford has got a brand new astro turf pitch after Donegal Local Development Company provided funding support to Milford Hall for the new facility.

The new state of the art astro-turf pitch was officially launched yesterday (Fri) following a €135,945.47 capital investment.

The existing all-weather pitch, which had lain idle behind the Milford Hall for the best part of a decade, has gotten a new lease of life and been transformed into a top of the range astro-turf playing facility.

The development works involved the overlaying of a synthetic astro-turf carpet on the existing surface as well as drainage works, fencing, additional flood lights and portable goal posts.

The innovative project was spearheaded by the Milford Hall Committee who wanted to provide an accessible amenity to the local rural population that would improve the quality of life of rural dwellers and enhance the social attractiveness of the local area. The new pitch has become a hive of activity for young – and not so young – in the local community.

Donegal Local Development Company through the ‘Village Renewal & Development’ measure of the Leader Programme contributed funding of €96,912.55 to the project at a grant rate of 72% with the Milford Hall Committee contributing €39,032.92 of its own funding to the project. The existing infrastructure meant that the scale of investment for a project of this nature was significantly less than it would be for a green field site, thus representing excellent value for money.

Speaking at the launch John Starrett, Board Director of Donegal Local Development Company Ltd. said “DLDC is delighted to be associated with the Milford Hall Committee and was very pleased to assist with Leader funding for this community facility. In delivering LEADER, the Board of DLDC has taken the approach of prioritising projects which assist in the diversifying the Rural Economy, and in turn, improving the quality of life for rural dwellers”. He added that “this project is an excellent example of how funding for community initiatives can improve and benefit the local area”.

Paddy Harte, Board Member of Ulster Investment Community Trust congratulated the Milford community for their vision, energy and commitment in developing this very impressive community facility and added: “We, at UCIT are a community organisation supporting other community organisations through our loan facilities. The success of UCIT is dependent on the success of projects such as this one in Milford as it in turn, makes it possible for us to make loan funds available to other community organisations. I would like to acknowledge the very successful partnership we enjoy with Donegal Local Development Company”.

Reverend James Gillespie, former Chairperson of the Milford Hall Committee said “the town had no usable all weather sports facilities. The existing all weather facility was developed over 10 years ago but its use has been minimal in the past 5 years or more, due to health & safety concerns surrounding the basalt quarry dust top layer, which was abrasive and unsuitable for younger children, in particular. The upgraded facility has greatly improved its value as an amenity for the wider community and interest groups and has greatly enhanced participation in sport by young people, in particular.”

Joe Ferry thanked everyone in attendance and added: “The Milford Hall Committee would like to sincerely thank DLDC, in particular, for helping us to realise this project, not just through their funding of it under the Leader Programme, but also for their highly professional & collaborative approach at all stages. We would also like to express our deep gratitude to CS Architecture and McHugh Bros Construction, including the various specialists engaged by them, for delivering the state-of-the art infrastructure we see before us today. In many ways, we see it as a symbol of hope for a brighter future for the young people in the wider Milford Community”.

The astro-turf pitch was then blessed and officially launched by Reverend James Gillespie.

The north Donegal Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) has the highest waiting list in Ireland.

Deputy Padraig Mac Lochlainn

Deputy Padraig Mac Lochlainn

Out of the 51 centres across the country, the Donegal branch has a waiting time of 9.8 weeks – four times tha national average of 2.5 weeks.

Reacting to the news Sinn Féin TD, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has called on the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton to “once and for all give North Donegal Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) the resources they require.”

Deputy Mac Lochlainn said ”It is now over a year ago since I revealed that North Donegal MABS had the highest waiting times. It was then five times the state average.

“Following my revelation, I met with the local MABS team along with local Sinn Féin Cllrs Mick Quinn, Gerry McMonagle and Jack Murray. We learned that they were overwhelmed with the demand they faced and complexity of the debt cases they worked on”.

“We made representations to Government and some extra resources were allocated. While the waiting times have reduced, I have now learned that North Donegal MABS still have the highest waiting times.”

H added it is no accident that only Limerick is close to North Donegal for waiting times as they are also the communities closest to North Donegal in terms of unemployment and poverty levels.

“I am now calling on the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton to wake up and smell the coffee and to once and for all ensure that North Donegal MABS are given the resources they need to meet the demand they face for their services.”

The injured kitten had plastic melted into his paws – DD

IT’S the sickest and most appalling attack on a defenceless animal in some time – someone tried to burn this five-month-old kitten by chucking him into a fire.

Animal rights campaigners say they have been left sickened by the incident in Burtonport.

“We received a call on Saturday evening about a cat that was found in the middle of Quay Road that was very scared and shocked,” said a spokesperson for Burtonport Animal Rescue.

“We went to collect the cat from the kind man who took him in and kept him safe secure but nothing could’ve prepared us for what we saw.

“The poor cat who turns out to be about a 5 month old kitten. Someone had seen fit to throw it on a fire and it had molten plastic stuck to his fur….. the pads on his feet peeled off leaving his feet raw.

“He also lost a claw and has infected toes. His whiskers have been burnt off one side of his face. He had to be sedated to be assessed and has been on a drip and pain medication since Saturday night.

“He was sedated on Sunday again to try and clean him up and have some patches of his fur clipped. He also has breathing problems which the vet is hoping will not turn to pneumonia. The vet said she has never seen a cat in this condition and the cat would not of jumped on to the fire himself.”

The kitten is a greyish brown long haired kitten with a little bit of white on it. If anyone has any information about this kitten we would really appreciate it you can contact Burtonport Animal Rescue on 0860762228 / 0864038888 or the Donegal ISPCA on 0866054943 or Gardai.
