GOLF LOGOOtway Golf News

Due to a very rare breakdown in communications, the results for the scramble of Sunday 30th November were incorrectly reported last week.

Although hardly anybody noticed, or brought it to my attention, it was felt the correct winners of Martin Duffy, Sidney Anderson and Mark Friel deserved a mention for their deserved victory, and apologies to the ‘Gallagher Three’ for the unfortunate error.

Club captain Martin Duffy made it two in a row last Sunday when he led his team of Paddy Lynch, Damian Gallagher and Martin O’Reilly to victory in very testing conditions of strong wind and the odd nasty hail shower. Hopefully we’ll be back to milder conditions this Saturday 13th when members battle it out for the annual Christmas Hampers, when names should be in to the clubhouse at 9158319 before 10 am for a 10.30 sharp tee off. Sunday the 14th is the last of the 2014 turkey scrambles, and the last chance for anyone who still hasn’t bagged the Christmas Fowl yet, tee off at the usual time of 12 noon, names in before 11.45.

Gweedore Celtic 2 Cappry Rovers 2

At a windswept Screaban, Cappry Rovers will be happy enough with a share of the points. The visitors played with the aid of the wind in the first half but despite having the bulk of possession they created four chances. The home side should have gone ahead on ten minutes but Tommy Diver couldn’t convert Colin Ferry’s cross. Cappry took the lead on twenty minutes when a corner into the goalmouth broke to Michael Lynch and he lashed it into the net. Gweedore were back on level terms five minutes later when Odhran Mc Niallais was fouled in the penalty area and Jamie Boyle took the penalty and although the keeper stopped the kick the ball rolled over the goal line. Ten minutes into the second half the home side went ahead with Colin Ferry finishing an in-swinging corner from Jamie Boyle. Gweedore pushed forward but despite hitting the post and the crossbar they couldn’t increase the lead. They were made to regret those mistakes when Paddy Mc Nulty headed in from close range on seventy five minutes. Best for Gweedore were Peter Mc Gee and Jamie Boyle. A decent team effort from Cappry. Referee: Ed Moore

Training Wednesday evening as usual at McCools astro pitch, 8pm.

CAPPRY ROVERS UNDER 16′s

Cappry Rovers 5-1 Drumkeen Utd

First against second met in Cappry on Saturday morning. Cappry were playing against a strong breeze in the 1st half and went ahead in the 9th minute when Sean McBride picked up the ball deep in his own half and went on a mazy run and found Karl McGlynn on the right who crossed to find Sean McBride at the back post who finished well. In the 17th minute Cappry doubled their lead when a Sean McBride free kick was well saved by the Drumkeen keeper but Oisin Gallen pick up the loose the ball and picked out Luke Gavigan who volleyed his effort into the roof of the net from close range. After this Drumkeen came back into the game and went close in the 24th minute when Jerome Duffy hit the crossbar with a fine strike from outside the box. In the 29th minute Drumkeen went close again through Dylan McNamee when he put his effort just past the post. Drumkeen finally got the reward their good play deserved when Jerome Duffy hit the bar and the Drumkeen players reacted quicker and Dylan McNamee headed home. Cappry started the 2nd half well and in the 44th minute went 3-1 up when the Drumkeen keeper could only parry Sean McBrides 25 yard strike out to Kyle O’Meara who made no mistake with a fine finish. In the 50th minute Sean McBride got his 2nd with another smart finish. In the 57th minute Sean McBride got his hat trick when he picked up a Jamie Keegan pass. McBride rounded 3 Drumkeen players before curling his left foot shot into the bottom corner. The teams kept looking for goals and played some good football but neither could add more goals. Two team performances. Ref: Michael Connolly.

CAPPRY ROVERS UNDER 14′s

Cappry Rovers 3-2 Raphoe Town

This was a clash between the top 2 in the league.

Raphoe got off to a good start and were ahead in the 8th minute when Caolan McMonagle finished well at the back post. Cappry came back into the game then and pressed looking to get level but the Raphoe keeper pulled off 2 smart saves from Joel Bradley Walsh. The game was end to end now with both teams looking for goals. Raphoe double there lead when Corey McBride finished well at the back post. Raphoe were then reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half time. Cappry started well in the 2nd and pulled a goal back in 38th minute when Kieran Neeson found the bottom corner with a 20 yard strike. In the 44th minute the home side were level when Conor Doherty finished well from a Joel Bradley Walsh pass. Cappry went searching for a 3rd but Raphoe defended well and were dangerous on the break. In the 56th min Cappry took the lead when Joel Bradley Wash found Kieran Neeson who tapped home from 6 yards. Both teams played good football in tough conditions. Raphoe pressed to get level but Cappry held on to win. Two team performance’s. Ref: Michael Connolly.

Next weekend they are away to Fintown Harps in the league.

Cappry Crusaders 1-1 Bonagee Arcade

U12 Cappry Crusaders welcomed Bonagee Arcade to a Floodlit Cappry park on Friday 5/12/14 for a 6pm kickoff. In what was a free flowing match both sides gave as good as they got, keeping both sets of supporters glued to the action. Conor Thompson opened the scoring after some clever passing by Dane McGlinchey and Jason Dunne. A Cappry defensive mix up let Bonagee back into the game and try as they might Cappry could not create a winning goal in the final few minutes. Conor Thompson was simply outstanding, covering every blade if grass for his team. Credit also to Kian Mulligan and Odhran Thomas in defence. Thanks to Bonagee manager Mark Patton and his boys, for an action packed display which was thoroughly enjoyed by both team’s supporters.

Next weeks fixture is a home tie with Gweedore Utd AFC.

Ballyraine 3-1 Cappry Colts

Ballyraine Utd came out on top in this match where they showed why they still have a 100% record so far. The Colts had 3 or 4 good chances early on with Sean Lyons showing well early on. Ballyraine struck twice midway through the 1st half to lead 2 nil at the break. The Colts got caught again 10 minutes into the 2nd half to go 3 down. Shortly after this the Colts put on huge pressure and got their rewards 15 minutes from the end when Daniel Taberski passed to Odhran Quigley Doherty who Struck from the edge of the box to make it 3-1. Well Done to a good Ballyraine team and the 16 players who travelled from Cappry with Cormac O’Donnell, Sean Ryan and Brenda Carr never giving up in a gritty team display.

Fortune has once again eluded Aodh Ruadh in a big match. They trailed by 0-4 to 0-3 in their under 21 championship quarter-final against Saint Eunan’s, but the Letterkenny goal had lead a charmed life as a number of chances for majors were denied. When Conor Patton’s goal finally did arrive in the second half it was unfortunately too little too late as the Saint Eunan’s ran out winner on a scoreline of 0-12 to 1-6. We have a full match report and pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Hurling

On Saturday last we had our annual Juvenile Hurling Presentation night, and in keeping with other years, this years guest was another legend of the hurling world the great Terence ‘Sambo’ McNaughton from Antrim. Sambo enjoyed a 17 year playing career with Antrim. He played in the All Ireland Final in 1989 and won an All-Star in 1991, he is widely regarded as one of Ulster’s greatest ever hurlers. The regard in which he is held in the hurling world is shown by his inclusion on the Hurling Review Committee set up by President of the GAA Liam O’Neill last year. Juvenile Hurling Chairman John Rooney welcomed all to this year’s event especially all the players and their families. He was delighted to welcome the great Sambo to Aodh Ruadh. He also welcomed Donegal Hurler Paul Sheridan to the event and congratulated him on being awarded Donegal Hurler of the year for 2014.

Sambo gave a great talk which young and old learned a lot from, he covered topics such as his difficulties as a child with a speech impediment and weight issues, how he overcame these difficulties to go on and become the greatest hurler he could. He spoke of the last line in his much acclaimed autobiography All Or Nothing which was, “No regrets.” He advised all present to have no regrets, he said in his work in the pub business he hears plenty of bar room regret stories and advised the boys to give of their best in everything they do. He spoke of his love of hurling and of the great game it is, and he thanked the club for inviting him to our presentation night.

While we didn’t win any county titles this year we had competed at all levels from under 8s to minors with varying degrees of success. All of our teams achievements were recognised on the night and all players up to under 14 were awarded certificates as a recognition of their efforts all year. Sambo presented the certificates to all and posed for photos with everyone. Special guests also on the night were Creevy National School who recently won the Cummann na mBunscoil county final defeating Tooban National School, and claiming the title for the first time in the school’s history. Principal of the school Ms Aoibhinn Kelly along with teachers Geraldine Thomas, Carmel McGee and Paula Gibson were present and Ms Kelly proudly called her team forward to receive their medals from Sambo.

We then had a number of individual presentations, firstly to Declan Breslin, Nathan Owens Kelly, and Gavin McGarrigle recognising their participation with the Donegal under 12 development squad in the Activity Day in Croke Park, hopefully the first of many appearances for them on the hallowed turf. Senan Rooney received a presentation for playing in the INTO exhibition game at half time in the All-Ireland semi-final between Limerick and Kilkenny. Next to receive awards were our representatives on the county under 14 team Pauric Keenaghan, Aaron Peach and Liam O’Sullivan, three All Ireland medallists Stephen Anderson, Conall Sweeney and Paddy McCaffrey were next to be honoured, these three lads were on the Donegal under 15 squad who won the under 16 C All-Ireland title. We had three representatives on the Donegal under 16 squad Oisin Rooney (captain) Brendan Gillespie and Kieran Daly. Our next three award winners represented Ulster this year, Oisin Rooney and Brendan Gillespie were selected for the Ulster camp held in Jordanstown in July while Orlaith Gillespie was selected for the camogie camp also held in Jordanstown. Unfortunately Brendan was injured for the game against the Galway under 15s. Oisin made the team and scored two goals and was one of only three players outside of Antrim and Down who made the team. Orlaith is training away with the Ulster squad and hoped to make the team for a game against Dublin early in the new year, it was a great achievement by these three players to reach this standard. We had seven representatives on the Donegal minor squad who narrowly lost to Derry in the Ulster championship and lost after extra time to Roscommon in the All-Ireland B quarter-final, they were Eddie Lynch (captain) Ciaran Rami, Oisin Roper, Eugene Drummond, Oisin Rooney, Brendan Gillespie and Donal Sweeny.

The final presentation of the night was made by Club President Owen Roe O’Neill who presented Sambo with a memento of his visit to the club. There followed the usual great refreshments supplied by the parents where there was loads of food for everyone. Sambo then conducted a very open question and answer session with everyone and all got a great insight into his career, the difficulties keeping hurling alive in Ulster and many other issues.

On Sunday morning in poor conditions he conducted a very good training session for the under 16s and minors and from there he headed back to the Glens of Antrim, a very genuine man and a true GAA legend.

Thanks to Peter McIntyre of the Allingham Arms Hotel for his help with Sambo’s visit, Peter’s support is much appreciated. Thanks to Sean Cassidy who set up the TV in the Aras, thanks to Ronan Mathews for all his photography on the night and to John Hughes for his slide show, finally thanks to all who turned up on the night to meet this great character. You can see Ronan Mathews pictures from the night up on aodhruadh.org.

The club extends our congratulations to Paul Sheridan on being named Donegal hurler of the year for 2014. Well deserved for all his efforts with club and county over the past few years. Paul received his award at the Annual Donegal GAA Awards in the Abbey Hotel last Saturday.

Date for your diary annual Juvenile Hurling table quiz will take place in Owen Roes on the 18th December a great nights craic with lots of raffle prizes is guaranteed.

THE MINOR GIRLS UNLUCKY IN ULSTER

Our Donegal championship winning minor girls were looking good for a win against Cavan champions Eastern Gaels after a closely fought encounter at Carrick Field with both sides starting poorly in tough conditions with wind, rain and hail. The Cavan side opened the scoring with a goal in the 18th minute of the game. Both sides scored points before Aisling McGuinness found the net for the home side and the teams went in at half time separated by a point in favour of Eastern Gaels.

After the break Moville won a penalty, only for the chance to be missed. But the girls in blue stuck at it, added a point before Kathy McLaughlin did find the net to give her side a 2-03 to 1-03 lead. Eastern Gaels struck next, forcing home a penalty to level the game. Nicole Gordon pointed and when another one followed, Moville found themselves two points ahead with eight minutes left on the clock. But with the last kick of the game in injury time, the visitors found the net.

Final score was Moville 2-05, Eastern Gaels, 3-04. It was a fantastic achievement for the girls to win the county final this year, and they were unlucky not to be in the Ulster final.

The team at Patrick Gildea Hairdressing came together and donated one toy each to the local St Vincent De Paul charity toy appeal.

Commenting on the toy donation the team said “Christmas is a wonderful time of the year but it can also be very stressful on some families who have little or no dispensable income to purchase gifts at Christmas.

“One of our team members suggested that we all donate one toy each to the Letterkenny St Vincent De Paul Toy appeal and everyone got behind it 100%.

“We were all very excited about buying toys that would make some local children very happy on Christmas morning and are delighted that we were in a position to give something back to the community.”

The Oriana cruise ship can take 1,900 passengers.

The Oriana cruise ship can take 1,900 passengers.

Some of the biggest ever passenger ships are to visit Co Donegal in 2015, it has been revealed.

The ships, which are part of the P&O/Carnival line, will pull into Killybegs in what is seen as a huge boost for tourism in the area with thousands of passengers on board.

The Killybegs Information Centre received confirmation through Sinbad Marine Services that three visits to the port have been scheduled in.

The vessels will come to Killybegs under the P&O Cruises flag will be the largest passenger ships so far to use the port.

P&O Cruises is a member of the Carnival Group which also owns such famous cruise brands as Cunard, Princess Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, P&O Cruises Australia, Holland America Line, Carnival Cruises, AIDA and Costa.

The MV “Adonia” is due in port on June 17 next and will return for a second visit on July 21. A second P&O Cruises vessel, the MV “Oriana”, which is twice the size, is due to berth on June 26.

The P&O Cruises confirmations means that already, with a total of eight vessel visits confirmed for 2015, the number of passengers visiting Killybegs next year is greater than in the 2014 season, itself a record.

The “Adonia” is registered at more than 30,000 tonnes, with a length of 180.45 m (592 ft). By comparison, the “Oriana” is over 69,000 tonnes with a length of 260.00 m (853.02 ft).

The “Adonia” has a capacity for more than 800 passengers. The “Oriana” has a maximum capacity of more than 1,900 passengers with a crew of just under 800 (794).

Anne Dorrian of the Killybegs Information Centre, said “This is great news and we hope it will lead to even bigger vessels visiting Killybegs in the future.

“The ‘Adonia’ is a pathfinder ship, exploring ports which the larger ships of today had not previously considered. Hopefully, her visit will pave the way for some of the most splendid ships in the Carnival fleet to come to beautiful County Donegal.”

Mrs Dorrian added: “Between 2009 and 2014, there have been 52 visits by cruise ships to Killybegs with over 22,000 passengers and more than 6,000 crew. In 2015, the eight ships confirmed will bring an estimated 6,300 passengers to the town.

Carnival Cruise Lines is a British-American owned company, based in Florida.

It is one of ten cruise ship brands owned and operated by Carnival Corporation & plc. The company has the largest fleet in the group, with 24 vessels currently in operation that account for more than 21% of the worldwide market share.

Martin Regan has replaced Paddy Campbell as Naomh Conaill GAA Senior team manager.

Martin Regan has been named as the Naomh Conaill GAA Senior Team manager for the forthcoming 2015 campaign.

Regan’s appointment was ratified by the board during a meeting which was held last night.

Regan takes over from Paddy Campbell who served as manager for two seasons.

Naomh Conaill have an excellent squad filled with current Donegal stars and with a healthy underage system in place will be hoping to kick on next year.

There are many GAA commentators in Donegal who feel Naomh Conaill should’ve won more than just TWO Donegal SFC titles in nine years, especially when you consider the success they’ve enjoyed at U21 level in particular.

Regan will no doubt be targeting the Donegal SFC title, having narrowly exited the Donegal SFC at the semi-final juncture this year they’ be hoping to go all the way next year.

With Leo McLoone, Dermot Molloy, Anthony Thompson and minor star Ethan O’Donnell in their ranks Naomh Conaill are as good as anyone on their day.
