Our celebration of Easter begins with the Vigil. This wonderful liturgy draws all of our senses into a joyful celebration. Candle light breaks apart the darkness. With music, holy water and the word of God we proclaim that Jesus is risen from the dead! Mary Magdalen and the women come to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus – but he is not there( Mark 16:1-7). In his death Jesus comes to meet us at the furthest, deepest point of human suffering. The resurrection is not an afterthought. The resurrection, like the nativity is about God’s desire to be with us, it is about incarnation. Because of the resurrection we can have absolute confidence that God is with us always. Not even death can separate us from the love of God. God is at the heart of our humanity and our humanity is at the heart of God.

It is deeply significant that Easter is when adults who have been preparing to become part of the Catholic faith are baptised. We too are invited to renew our baptismal promises – and it is worth thinking about what we are committing ourselves to. We should not do this lightly. We have travelled the road from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday with Jesus. We have been with him in his suffering and death. In baptism we are invited to be with him in his new life. Baptism is our “Yes” to the resurrection and to the new beginning it offers. By renewing our baptismal promises we are saying “We have seen what this demands of us, we know that to live by faith is challenging. We realise that to say yes means allowing faith to shape our present and our future. We are prepared to stand with Jesus, so that through our lives he will be present and active in our homes, our communities and our world. We are saying yes to being the body of Christ with all the challenges that brings.”

–Having seen where Jesus’ commitment to God’s word took him – are you prepared to follow him?

–Consider your baptismal promises – what implications does it have for your life if you renew those promises?

–In the resurrection Jesus brings us new life. Where in your life, your relationships and the world around you do you experience that sense of new life, new possibilities, glimpses of hope, moments of delight? Give thanks!

For are hosting a fun day in the Community Centre on Monday 1st April between 2pm & 4pm.

MAKING A COLD CALL TO MAKE SURE THE BAGS WERE ON THEIR WAY – PIC PAUL DOHERTY IN ALASKA FOR DONEGALDAILY.COM

PIX: PAUL DOHERTY: This is just an update with what has been happening with us.

We landed in Fairbanks last night at 11pm, which would have been 7am in Donegal, to realise that our luggage didn’t make it and was still in Paris where we got a connecting flight. This was a major set back for us as Paul had a lot of equipment in the case which he needs for filming… not only that but neither Paul or Denis had a coat in these freezing temperatures!

Eventually we had it organized that the bags were to arrive 24 hours later which means they should be here tonight at 11pm which is perfect as we leave Fairbanks to begin the drive early the next morning.

After leaving the Airport and on the way to the hotel we had the pleasure of watching the Aurora Borealis, swirling around in the sky, out of the car window the whole way to the hotel and even looking out of the hotel window – talk about a window with a view!

Today we had to get a lot of things organized (while still wearing the same clothes from Wednesday!) such as food supplies for the week and survival equipment but we still had time to visit the World Ice Sculpture Championship, which is being held in Fairbanks this week, and we were blown away by the detail and size of the ice sculptures. I have attached a photo of Denis and Leslie sitting in an Ice House.

Tomorrow we leave the Hotel at 7am and head to Carlile Transport HQ where we will meet some of the Truckers to give us a bit of advice for traveling this treacherous road, after we meet them we begin the journey. On day one of the trip we hopefully will make it to Coldfoot, which is the half way point and inside the Arctic Circle. After leaving Fairbanks we will have no Phone Coverage or Internet, we have been told there is a pay phone in Coldfoot so we will call back to Donegal then to let everyone know how the first leg of the Journey went.

Overall our opinion of Alaska so far is that the people here are very friendly and helpful while the town is very clean and well maintained.

901423_517859821586132_381524410_oWHO says there’s no going back?

Well Carndonagh athlete Garett Doherty returned to his Inishowen roots today – and ran the Ballyliffin Coastal Challenge 10-mile race….backwards.

Of course Garret is actually a world champion at Retro Racing as it’s called.

And today he was able to show off his incredible athleticism on the route of the world’s most spectacular race.

This traditional Easter Saturday event on the Inishowen peninsula was once again a credit to the local organising committee.

With 670 starters in the main event walking /running and a further 120 youngsters participating in the Childrens 1k Beach Run adding to the family element of the event it goes from strength to strength with many participating for the charity of their choice.

This year’s race winner was Derry man Pius McIntyre from local man John Harkin, the race winner two years ago.

There was also an impressive women’s winner in Karen Alexander of Sperrin Harriers.

Full results within the next few hours here on Donegal Daily.

Roartys 5 Kilcar House 0

Roartys are back in the league final for the third year in a row following this win over Kilcar House, with Kilcar House duo Raymond Hegarty and Hugh Doherty poised to take the first game of the night Kieran Carr took out a 133 checkout to put the Glen side 1-0 up he was throwing with John McGinley. In the first singles Dermot McGuire beat Kenneth Kennedy 3-2 in a great game of darts to leave Roartys one match away from the final and it was John McGinley who took the match with a 3-1 win over Raymond Hegarty. This was expected to be a closer game but trough out it was the sharp finishing of the holders that made the difference while Kilcar House can look back on a successful first year in the league where they took the runners up place.

Knockout Cup Semi Final

Bridge Bar 2 Cope House 4

The Cope House are into the final for the second year in a row following a 4-2 victory in O’Donnell’s, Philip Gallagher opened the Killybegs account with a 4-0 win over Colm McGlinchey, Adrian Byrne levelled the game up with a 4-3 win over Declan Cunningham he had 16 and 18 dart legs in this one. A man is being questioned by Gardai after an attempted armed robbery at a Letterkenny petrol station last night.knife-point

A would-be robber produced a knife and demanded cash at the Glencar filling station.

However the man was overpowered and detained by staff at the garage.

It is understood a large knife was recovered at the scene of the attempted hold-up.

The suspect was arrested by Gardai and brought to Letterkenny Garda station where he is still being questioned.

The attempted robbery comes less than a week after another robbery at another Letterkenny shop using a knife.

A member of staff Callaghan’s XL shop on the town’s Main Street was held at knifepoint and a large amount of cash was taken during the raid.

It is not known if Gardai are linking the two incidents yet.

‘GOVERNMENT IMPLEMENTING FAILED POLICIES OF FIANNA FAIL’– ADAMS TELLS DONEGAL COMMEMORATION

$

mqdefaultSinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD gave the main address today at the annual Easter commemoration in Drumboe, County Donegal, and launched a scathing attack on the Government over its austerity measures.

In a wide ranging address the Sinn Féin leader slammed the Irish government’s policy of austerity and the way it is kow-towing to the interests of golden circles and elites in Irish society and acting in their interests as opposed to the interests of Irish citizens.

He said: “The record of this government in its two years in power has been appalling. Fine Gael and Labour were elected to undo the damage of Fianna Fáil but have chosen instead to implement Fianna Fáil policies.

“The government’s austerity policies are driving up poverty and disadvantage. Emigration and unemployment are at record levels; public services, particularly health, are in crisis; the economy has flatlined and another new tax – the Property Tax – has to be paid by struggling families in the summer.

“Sinn Féin is introducing a Bill to reverse the Property Tax and will campaign for its repeal.”

Mr Adams also challenged those who are exploiting the controversy over flags and emblems in the North. He said: “Unionists leaders have to face up to the reality that the old ways and the old days are gone.

“Playing party politics with this issue is dangerous and counterproductive.

“There are many genuine loyalists and unionists, including former combatants, working in disadvantaged communities who realise the dangers and risks involved.

“They also know that it is citizens from these disadvantaged communities who will bear the brunt of any violent or disruptive actions.

“These communities have more in common with their republican neighbours than they may realise.

“Dialogue between them and Sinn Féin is essential and I commit our party, without preconditions, to be part of such discussions both in the short term as we face into the Orange matching season, and in the longer term to find, not only solutions to contentious issues but to tackle economic disadvantage.

“The vast majority of citizens want to live in a fair society based upon equality and Sinn Féin is committed to bring that this about. That’s why we are calling for a border poll on Irish unity to be held in the next term of the Oireachtas and the Assembly. The people should decide on the future direction of the island of Ireland.”

Mr Adams said that there is also a need to face up to legacy issues. Charlie Daly, Sean Larkin, Daniel Enwright and Timothy O Sullivan who are honoured at Drumboe, were republican volunteers who were summarily executed by Free State forces during the civil war.

Mr Adams said: “Seventy-seven republicans were executed during that period.

“There was never any process of reconciliation put in place after those catastrophic events.

“They still cast a shadow over Irish society today and shape political life in this state.

“Other republicans died in this state as a consequence of the conflict. Tom Smith, a republican prisoner, was killed in Portlaoise prison and Hugh Hehir was shot dead in County Clare.

“During the era of the heavy gang many citizens were brutally assaulted. Beatings were also common place within the prison system. And there was collusion between elements of the Irish establishment and the British forces in the North.

“Republicans also inflicted great hurt. Members of the state forces here, including Gardai were killed.

“These matters need to be faced up to. Sinn Féin believes that the best way of doing this is through the establishment of an Independent International Truth Commission.

“The two governments’, former combatants and those in leadership across Ireland and Britain need to part of such a process. There can be no hierarchy of victims.

“The people of this island need a genuine process of national reconciliation.

“I am prepared to meet with victims’ families and others as part of this.”

DONEGAL JUNIOR LEAGUE

Glencar Inn Division Two

Glenree United Reserves 1 Keadue Rovers Reserves 2

Keadue Rovers had an encouraging win against Glenree at Central Park on Saturday. On what was a very cold day for football it was Keadue who were quick out of the blocks with striker Darragh Hanlon showing well up front. In the fifteenth minute the home side took the lead when Mark Sweeney flicked in a near post header from a corner. By twenty minutes Keadue were well on top and from a free kick, which came off the post, Damien Hanlon was on hand to knock it into the net from close range. Glenree had a good closing fifteen minutes to the half having a couple of long range strikes on goal. They were rewarded on the half time whistle, when following a header which was well saved by Keadue keeper Ben Boyle, Owen McLaughlin followed up with a close range effort to make it 2-1. Into the second half and it was mostly Glenree on the attack with Keadue playing a holding game. Apart from a couple of runs in behind the home defence, Glenree didn’t have any clear cut chances or force the home keeper into any saves. The home side held out for a good victory. A good display by both teams in difficult conditions. Darragh Hanlon was standing out for Keadue Rovers.

Referee: Paul Doherty.

Donegal Town Reserves 5 Gweedore United Reserves 2

Donegal Town maintained their promotion push with a solid home performance against Gweedore United. Donegal dominated the early stages and deservedly took the lead when Joe McIntyre whipped the ball across the area for Gary Ward to hammer home at the far post. Sloppy defending allowed Gweedore back into the game as a misplaced pass out of defence from Donegal allowed Stephen O’Donnell to level things up with a fine finish from the edge of the area. Gweedore looked dangerous and created some good chances but it was the home side that went in ahead at the break when David Bustard prodded home a well placed through ball from Kevin Devaney. The stand out moment in the game came just after half time from Donegal’s left winger McIntyre. Upon receiving the ball in his own half, he bobbed and weaved his way past several defenders before coolly slotting the ball past the Gweedore ‘keeper to make it 3-1. Gweedore pulled a goal back when Joe Coyle broke the offside trap to put the game back in the balance. Donegal responded well and McIntyre restored the home side’s two goal advantage when his cross found its way into the back of the net. The win was sealed moments from time when substitute Paddy O’ Kennedy was taken down when through on goal. The subsequent penalty was dispatched by Donegal’s talisman Bustard to seal the victory. Good team performances from both sides with Joe McIntyre standing out for the hosts. Referee: John Mc Glanaghey.

Milford United Reserves 1 Deele Harps 3

Deele took another step towards the title with this win in Moyle View. Deele had the better of the opening exchanges and on twenty minutes Shane Gallagher opened his account with a smart finish. The goal spurred Milford into action and they came back into the game when good work by Lee Burke on the wing ended with Ciran Blaney firing home from a tight angle. Milford were then unlucky not to go ahead when Lee Burke hit the post. There was nothing to choose between the teams in the second half until Dermot Shiels struck a speculative shot which caught the keeper off his line and finished in the net. Milford went for broke and were caught when Gallagher netted his second to finish off the game.

Downtown United 4 Tullyvinney Rovers 1

Downtown United took the lead on 26minutes when Charles McLaughlin slotted home from 5yards. Tullyvinney Rovers equalised from the penalty spot on 31minutes when Redmond Doherty was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the Downtown United box. Garvin Tinney put the penalty away despite the best efforts of the Downtown keeper. Downtown regained the lead with 5minutes left in the first half. A great through ball from Gio People to Niall Bonner who raced clear and coolly slotted it past the outrushing Tullyvinney keeper.

Downtown started the second half brightly with both Krissi McLaughlin and Niall Bonner going close for the home side. Downtown capitalised on their great start to the second half when Charles McLaughlin scored a 30 yard volley to put them 3-1 ahead. The Scoring was rounded off by the home sides’ Captain Redmond Doherty with a diving header from a great cross from the left boot of Niall Bonner. Best for Downtown was Niall Bonner while Garvin Tinney was best for Tullyvinney

Brian Mc Cormick Sports Premier Division

Glenea United 4 Milford United 5

In blustery conditions it was Milford who came out on top in the dying moments. The home side started brightly and pressed hard for the opening goal. They were rewarded on 25 minutes when Paul Sweeney was on hand to force the ball home after a scramble in the box after a corner. Milford equalized on 28 minutes when Peter Doherty was played through and he rounded the keeper to slot the ball home. Glenea regained the lead on the stroke of halftime. Ryan McFadden saw his initial effort well saved by the away keeper but Michael Barry was on hand slot home the rebound. In the 2nd half Milford started well and equalised on 60 minutes when Peter Doherty got on the end of a long throw to fire the ball into the net. Milford started to take control of the game and took the lead on 65 minutes when Joey Conlon drilled home from the edge of the area. Glenea got back into the game on 75 minutes when Brian Cuffe scored with an overhead kick from a Shane Ferry cross. Glena regained the lead on 90 minutes when Michael Barry slid the ball in at the near post after good work by John Mc Garvey. However in injury time all the home side’s good work was undone as Milford scored two goals to take victory. Mark Flood headed home at the back post and Brendan Murray drilled the ball home after a scramble to give his side victory. Best for Glena were John Harley and Sean Maguire, while Peter Doherty and PJ Hagan were best for Milford. Referee: Marty Mc Garrigle

Dunkineely Celtic 0 Rathmullan Celtic 2

Dunkineely’s fight for survival in the Premier Division suffered a setback with this two nil defeat at home to Rathmullan Celtic. The scoreline does not reflect the effort and good play of the home team who despite conceding in the possession stakes created the better chances. The first half was a rather tame affair with neither team really dominating. Rathmullan had plenty of possession but never really troubled the home defence which restricted them to a few long range efforts. The best effort of the half came from Adrian Nesbitt for the home side whose curling shot from 18 yards was expertly tipped away by the visiting keeper.

The game changed in a thirty second spell on 50 minutes. A Dunkineely corner was headed against the underside of the bar by Aaron Byrne and hit the keeper on the head before being cleared. Rathmullan broke and Oisin Mc Menamin beat the keeper to a long ball and lobbed it into the net. Despite this setback Dunkineely still kept playing good attacking football and created a number of openings. Martin Cunningham saw his shot well saved by the keeper on 68 minutes. Paul Mc Fadden and Patrick White had good efforts on goal go narrowly wide as the home side pressed for a way back into the game. Rathmullan got their second when a misplaced pass out of defence was picked up by Paddy Sheridan who played in Eamonn Sheridan who beat the keeper from 12 yards. Despite their endeavours Dunkineely could not find a way through and must now hope to get points in their remaining three games to at least make the playoffs.

Best for Rathmullan were Shay Coyle and Eamonn Sheridan. For Dunkineely Aiden Duddy and Aaron Byrne were best. Referee Ed Moore

Watson Hire Division One

Keadue Rovers 1 Donegal Town 2

Donegal Town came to Central Park on Easter Sunday and took away all three points in a deserved but hard fought victory. Played in tough, windy conditions, Keadue fielded an unfamiliar line up and it was Donegal Town, playing with the advantage of the strong wind who were the dominant team and set about knocking the ball around to good effect and forcing home keeper Danny Rodgers into a few good saves early on. They took the lead of fifteen minutes when a free kick from left back Danny Mc Garrigle found the net directly. They were still on top and had good chances in both the twentieth and twenty fifth minutes to increase their lead but Keadue remained dogged throughout, defending in numbers. The home side retained possession a little better after that but it was still Donegal who were forcing the home keeper into saves from long range efforts and set pieces. Into the second half and with the wind behind them Keadue were more positive and were rewarded in the fiftieth minute when, from a good passing move in midfield, Sean Bonner hit a great effort to the top corner to make it 1-1. Donegal Town however to their credit were straight on the attack again and were the better team for the next twenty minutes creating a few good chances and pinning the home team back. They went ahead again on seventy two minutes when Declan Browne reacted quickest to a through ball and his shot flew into the corner of the net. For the final fifteen minutes Keadue made a big push for the equaliser, pushing extra men up front but despite plenty of ball, just couldn’t fashion a clear effort on goal and it was Donegal who held out for the victory.

A decent game of football in tricky conditions with team efforts from both sides.

Referee: Gerry Gallagher.

OUTRAGE AS DONEGAL GARDA’S CAR BURNT OUT IN ARSON ATTACK AT STATION

Garda tapeArsonists have torched a Garda’s private car parked outside the station where he works.

The silver Toyota Corolla car belonging to Garda Damian O’Connor was completely gutted in the attack at Kilmacrennan Garda station around 5.45am this morning.

Garda O’Connor was out on patrol at the time of the attack.

The car was taken away and is being forensically examined and no arrests have been made.

Sources claim the attack may have been carried out by criminals being investigated for incidents in the local village.

It came less than 24 hours after arsonists struck at a farm in the townland of Ballyheerin, just outside Kilmacrennan.

Farm buildings, horse carts and a van were set alight but no-one was injured.

Gardai appealed for information on the attacks.

“This was a despicable act of wanton vandalism,” said a Garda spokesman.

“We would appeal to anyone with information to give it to Gardai as a matter of urgency.”

A spokesman for the Garda Press office said a full investigation has been launched into the incident but no arrests have been made.

Local independent councillor Michael McBride condemned those responsible for the incident.

“The people of Kilmacrennan are outraged that they have woken up on Easter Sunday to this dreadful incident,” he said.

“This sort of incident is extremely rare thankfully but it shows the level some criminals will go to in an attempt to disrupt the work of gardai. It will not succeed.

“The village and surrounding community is rightly angry after what has happened.”

DONEGAL SINGER ROISIN THANKS FANS AFTER SHE IS AXED FROM TV’S THE VOICE

Roisin CarlinROISIN Carlin’s TV stardom dream is over.

The Donegal girl was axed from RTE’s The Voice tonight.

She had been panned by the judges for her performance earlier in the show – getting just 17 from a possible 30 for her performance.

In an interview before the public got their say, the 20-year-old expressed the hope that people would save her.

But that didn’t happen as 22-year-old Dubliner Wayne Beatty won the judges and the public vote to continue in Jamelia’s team – and she then failed to land a lifeline.

However the Fahan girl was looking on the bright side of life this evening.

She said: I turned 4 chairs at my blind audition, I kicked ass in the battle, I made it to the final 16 out of about 4,500 people.

“I have loved every minute of this compeition, it has been such a life changing experience! to everyone who voted for me..thank you so much! I am blessed to have such great support and followers!

“To everyone who sponsored me and helped me with posters and signs thank you. I could honestly go on all night but I won’t. It’s going to be hard getting back into reality and routine but this aint the last you’ve seen of me.”

Shay and Jane

SHAY Given has issued a statement tonight on his separation from his wife.

There have been reports in Britain linking the Donegal man with a new girlfriend.

However it’s understood Shay and his wife Jane have been separated for some time.

“Shay and his wife separated a number of months ago and, in the interests of their young family, they request that their right to privacy continues to be respected,” said a spokesman for the former Ireland goalkeeper.

The Aston Villa player was at Villa Park for today’s game with Liverpool, but he wasn’t picked to play.

Shay met Jane in Glasgow in 1999 and married seven months later.
