EVEN DONEGAL’S KING WANTS IRISH POLITICS CLEANED UP

The Clean Up Politics Campaign founder Tim Jackson with King of Tory Patsy Dan Rogers.

The Clean Up Politics Campaign founder Tim Jackson with King of Tory Patsy Dan Rogers.

The Clean Up Politics campaign has won regal favour this week with Patsy Dan, King of Tory Island, calling it a "much needed wake-up call for our politicians."

Visiting Tory to promote the campaign, Tim Jackson, the Ballybofey-based founder of Clean Up Politics, was warmly welcomed by the islanders, with the King expressing full support for the initiative.

As part of the Clean Up Politics campaign, candidates at the next General Election will be asked to adopt four policy points concerning their earnings.

They are:

- Salaries should be reduced from €90k to €45k
- Expenses must be fully vouched, with receipts made publicly available
- Pensions will be reduced in line with the current public service rate
- €13m p/a funding of political parties will cease

Highlighting Sinn Féin's recent electoral promise to reduce TD's salaries by 20% from the current €90,000, Jackson remarked that the move made little sense, since each Sinn Féin TD claims to only take home one third of their salary anyway.

"The only explanation I can see is that Sinn Féin don't want to cut TD salaries in half because the party couldn't then keep the savings for themselves, as they currently do at the expense of the taxpayer. I would prefer to see all parties make an honest, comprehensive attempt to address this issue, rather than peddle empty promises of token reform."

Congratulations to clubman David McConnell, his wife Aisling and son Dáithí on the recent birth of their new baby son and brother, Cormac. untitled (580)

Summer Camp

Over two hundred children from the parish attended the club’s Summer Camps over the last fortnight.  Each child received club shorts, socks and tops, a trip to the cinema and excellent coaching from club coaches and volunteers.  Thank you to all the club coaches and volunteers who gave up their time to ensure your children enjoyed what has been an overall success this year again.

Fundraising

It was great to hear so many good reports about the Summer Camps and how they were great value.  Contrary to popular belief, the Club receives no funding but depends on the generosity of club members, parents/guardians and the local community to cover the day to day costs of running the Club and providing top class coaching for our youths (through training courses for our coaches).  Please support your local Club by buying a Lotto every week and supporting our fundraising initiatives held throughout the year.  If every parent/guardian of those who attended the Camps bought a Lotto every week and supported only one fundraising initiative per year, the Club would receive approx €23,000 which could go to providing better quality training for our coaches; building a covered stand; maintaining pitches etc which can only be for the betterment of our younger members.  The Club, as always, is grateful of all/any support you can give.

Senior Football Championship Buncrana 1 12  St Naul’s 0  9

Buncrana was home to St Naul’s in the second leg of Intermediate Championship.  This was a must win for Buncrana as they lost their first round game away to Ballyshannon.  St Naul’s opened the score with a point from play and then went two up after a Stephen Griffin free.  Buncrana opened their score with a good point from play by Kevin O Loughlin.  St Naul’s added two more Griffin points from frees but Buncrana replied with points from Doherty and Campbell.  Half time score was St Nauls 0-5 Buncrana 0-4.  Buncrana would have been disappointed at half time as they had controlled the game but this did not reflect on the scoreboard.  On resumption of the second half, Buncrana took the game to St Naul’s and Oisin Doherty scored two excellent points from play and a long range gem from Campbell put Buncrana 9 points to 7 points up.  The game was then in the balance when a long range ball went into Campbell who fielded, beat two defenders and rounded the goalkeeper to shoot the ball low to the net to effectively end the game as a contest.  Buncrana added 3 more points to run out 1-12 to 0-9 winners.  This was an all round, good team performance from Buncrana, with excellent performances from Calvin Jones, Caolan Mc Gonagle, Garbhan Friel, Oisin Doherty and John Campbell.  Buncrana team:  Lee Mc Carron, Shane Mc Laughlin, Simon Cuffe, Conor Grant, Calvin Jones, Bruce Waldron, Kevin O Loughlin 0-2, Caolan Mc Gonagle 0-1, Garbhan Friel 0-2, Peter Mc Laughlin 0-1, Oisin Doherty 0-2, Adrian Doherty 0-1, John Campbell 1-2, Oran Doherty 0-1, Joseph Mc Grory.

Senior Reserve Football Championship  Buncrana 1 13  St Naul’s 1 11

Our Senior Reserve game went right to the wire with a last, blast Noel McLaughlin goal, giving homeside a deserved win.  Former Donegal player and All Ireland winner, Ryan Bradley, played at full forward and showed his prowess, kicking some fine scores from frees and play.  Despite dominating the game, the sides went in level at half time (six points each) with Sean Parker making a superb save from a penalty.  Again, the Buncrana side were in control in the early stages of the second half and opened up a four point lead and were seemingly on the way to victory until a great individual goal from St Naul’s midfielder, followed by a couple of points, put St Naul’s ahead as the game entered injury time.  A fine Buncrana move was finished off by 16 year old McLaughlin, in as a second half substitute, to the roof of the net to seal a two point win for Malachy McCann’s men who have now qualified for the quarter finals with a game to spare.  Gavin McElhinney returned to the side and young players, Conor O Donnell, Mark O Connell, Patrick Wilson and the excellent Aedan Stokes were very much to the fore.  Sean Parker’s penalty save proved vital and overall this was a very good win despite the boys playing within themselves.

Senior Hurling Championship

Buncrana Senior Hurlers received a harsh lesson in the Senior Hurling Championship in Burt on Wednesday night, suffering their heaviest defeat in their short senior careers.  Buncrana's young charges took to the field with only four players over the minor age group AND without their only two county senior players, with Jack and Dónal Óg not available.  This was a harsh lesson.  Everyone involved in hurling in the Club knew that our venture into adult hurling was going to be hard.  The seasoned Burt side was relentless in their desire to add to their already sizeable scoreline – a lesson that our young charges will learn from.  Massive credit must go to our dedicated bunch of hurlers who will regroup and play their last championship game against MacCumhaill’s on Wednesday, 26th August at 7pm.  The future, if any, of Donegal Hurling will need these players and the club’s dominance in recent years in underage hurling bodes well for the future.  These young lads should not get disillusioned with the result and scoreline.  Heads up, lessons learned.  Bun Cranncha Abú.

GAA NEWS: TIR CHONAILL GAELS WIN SECOND CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH TO SECURE SEMI-FINAL SPOT

Tom O'Connor R.I.P
A dark cloud descended over the club on Sunday morning with the sad news of the passing of our much loved vice president and friend Tom O'Connor. Tom passed away after a short illness and stay at Northwick Park Hospital. Tom was a native of Co Limerick and was very proud of his native county and has been a great club servant for over the last two decades and very recently up until taking ill. Tir Chonaill Gaels Pic
Tom was highly involved in the minor board in earlier years to which he was still serving as President and more recently was at the forefront of the lotto committee and was always on duty on match days in Greenford and Ruislip raising funds for the club. He had a warm smile and handshake every time you met him and very much enjoyed the fun that went with the club lotto and meeting the many people who came to the club, in short he was a mighty Gael. The esteem in which Tom was held could be felt in the sadness that was expressed by members of all clubs that were in Ruislip for Sundays' games. A minutes silence was held in his honor before our match with St Kiernans. Tom is survived by his daughter Pat and we send our sincere sympathies and prayers. We hope to inform all club members of funeral arrangements in the coming days.
May Tom rest in peace.
Home Grown Final
Our all English born panel contested the all Britain final on Saturday evening in Ruislip V Sean McDermotts from Birmingham. After an even start for both teams, McDermotts hit 1-4 on the trot to give them an 8 point lead after 20 minutes. The Gaels pulled back 2 points to go into the break 6 points adrift.
The 2nd half saw the Gaels rally and they had McDermotts pegged back when Francis McGinley rattled the onion bag and the comeback was on. They raced into a 4 point lead but McDermotts pulled a goal back and hit a 45 between the posts with the last kick to send the game into extra time.
The Gaels controlled the first period and went into the break 3 points up. The second period saw the Gaels hold their own and maintain their lead. With 5 mins left the Gaels made hard work of clearing the ball from defence and from a sideline ball launched into the box McDermotts pulled a goal back and then went on to register 3 points to confirm their victory.
It was a great game and hopefully it will kick-start this competition for the future and renew rivalries of old with clubs from other cities around England.
Seniors
The seniors played St Kiernans in the 2nd round of the championship on Sunday in Ruislip. The Gaels started the game in high gear and never gave the Kiernans a sniff from start to finish. A great individual solo effort from Liam Gavigan running with the ball on the deck from the 45 to score a goal was the highlight of the first half. The defence was uncompromising and laid he foundations for Liam Gavigan, Adam Askin and Mark Gottsche to control possession and launch attacks.
A fortunate goal at the beginning of the 2nd half killed the game as a contest but the Gaels kept the scoreboard ticking over. With two wins from twp the boys can look forward to a semi-final after commanding the group.
Best Wishes
The club sends best wishes to former player and club member Danny Tully after a short illness, we hope to see him down supporting the club very soon.

Tir Chonaill Gaels Club Notes - 17 August 2015
Seniors
Seniors had no fixtures at the weekend. They are back in action this Sunday 23rd of August in the Championship V St Kiernans this Sunday at 12.00 in Ruislip. Come out and support Barney, Lloyd and the boys.
Juniors/Homegrown
Last week saw a little piece of history being made when a senior team consisting of players all born in London consisting of all the junior players and complimented with 3 from the seniors won the London homegrown championship beating St Kiernans after a reply.
The first game on Tuesday was a thriller with St Kiernans leveling with the last attack of the game. The replay on Thursday saw the Gaels race into a 7 point lead only for the Kiernans to hit 1-3 without reply. The boys showed great character by taking the game back by the scruff of the neck and going two points up to settle the nerves and see the game out. Liam O´Regan had a stormer in the full back line with battling performances from Gavin McEvoy, Aidan McGarvey, Killian Butler and Kieran Clarke.
Over both games the Kiernans and Gaels played with great intentsity and rivalry which was a great compliment to the youth structures they have in place and to the people who brought these players through the ranks at each club- well done to all at both clubs. A special mention of thanks to Cormac McGarvey who treated the players and supporters to refreshments afterwards.
As a result, the boys play in the all Britain final this coming Saturday V John Mitchells in Ruislip at 6pm. Lets get out and support the lads.
Reserves
The old boys are out on Wednesday evening against the North London Shamrocks in the first round of the Championship, throw in at 7.15pm in Tottenhall. Good luck to Brian and the boys for the campaign.

Just one seminarian from Donegal will commence priesthood studies at Saint Patrick’s College Maynooth this year.

Just one seminarian has joined to study the priesthood from Donegal this year.

Just one seminarian has joined to study the priesthood from Donegal this year.

Yesterday Saint Patrick’s College Maynooth welcomed a total of seventeen new seminarians who have commenced their formation for the priesthood at the National Seminary.

The new candidates, their families and friends were welcomed to Maynooth by the President of Saint College Maynooth, Monsignor Hugh Connolly.

He said “Our thoughts and prayers accompany these seventeen men who have taken the first step along the road to ordained ministry and to placing their lives at the service of Christ and of His people. This formation year will coincide with a Year of Mercy which will be celebrated throughout the world by the universal Church.

"When our Holy Father announced this he said, ‘I am convinced that the whole church - has much need to receive mercy because we are all sinners and will find in this jubilee the joy to rediscover and render fruitful the mercy of God, with which we are all called to give consolation to every man and woman of our time. The call of Jesus pushes each of us to never stop at the surface of things, especially when we are dealing with a person, because we are called to look beyond, to focus on the heart to see of how much generosity everyone is capable. No one can be excluded from the mercy of God.’”

Monsignor Connolly concluded, “It is my wish that the year ahead will be a year of mercy and of grace for each one of us here in our seminary community. May we never stop at the ‘surface of things’ but rather push on to discover the presence of Christ in our community and in every person with whom we are called to minister and to share our lives. Let us pray that others will hear the voice of the Holy Spirit and that they may also consider a vocation to the priesthood.”

At the end of September the total number of resident seminarians in Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, will be approximately sixty. A further twenty or so non-resident seminarians are also pursuing their academic studies in the College, together with some postgraduate priests and several hundred lay students.

Letterkenny General Hospital

One of the two men overcome by fumes on a trawler in Killybegs yesterday has died in hospital overnight.

Doctors at Letterkenny General Hospital had been battling to save the lives of the two men who had been put into induced comas in a bid to save them.

However, despite their brave efforts, one of the men passed away overnight.

The man who did was believed to be a 27 year old from Galway while the other man still fighting for his life is from Albania.

The tragedy happened when one of the men had come overcome by toxic fumes on the boat and when the other went to hep, he too collapsed.

The pair were rushed to hospital following the incident on the Oilean an Oir at around 1.30pm.

Councillor Niamh Kennedy said “They were overcome by fumes. They were cleaning out one of the tanks, a hold where the fish are held. It was empty and they found stagnant water in the pipework.

“It had been lying there for a while and it is believed the two men inhaled ammonia and hydrogen sulphide gas from organic matter that had been rotting.

“One guy was out first, and then the other guy went to help him but also ended up passing out.”

It is understood one of the victims is a 27-year-old from Galway, while the other aged 46 is from Albania.

The scene was preserved by gardai and officials from the Health and Safety Authority arrived at the scene last night.

DONEGAL MOTORISTS URGED TO TAKE PART IN ‘SLOW DOWN’ DAY

Donegal County Council is encouraging motorists to take part in National Slow Down Day which takes place this year between 7am this Friday, August 28 and 7am on Saturday, August 29.Speed sign

Last year again saw an increase in road deaths, resulting in 195 fatalities on our roads. To date, 106 people have lost their lives on Irish roads.

Excessive or inappropriate speed is a major contributory factor to road traffic collisions. The higher the speed, the greater the likelihood is of a collision happening and the more severe the outcome of that collision.

87,367 speeding fixed penalty notices have been issued up to the end of May 2015.
The objective of operation ‘Slow Down’ is to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.

This initiative is supported by the Road Safety Authority, Donegal County Council and the Donegal Road Safety Working Group and other partner stakeholders.

Donegal Road Safety Officer Brian O’Donnell says the aim is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive and inappropriate speed.

“We appeal to each and every one of you to play your part in reducing the tragedy that road fatalities and serious injury collisions bring upon families in Donegal.  Please be conscious that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

Public and private sector fleet operators are also being asked to participate in the initiative by informing employees of the key message to ‘Slow Down’ and, whether driving for business or private purposes, to always drive within the speed limit and at a speed appropriate to the prevailing conditions.

Drivers are also asked to turn on their dipped headlamps to show support and increase their visibility.

The overall aim of the National ‘Slow Down’ day is to reduce the number and severity of road traffic collisions. It is every motorist’s responsibility to slow down and ensure that the roads are safe for everyone.

PAUL DURCAN REVEALS HOW HE GOT OVER ‘THAT’ MISTAKE IN LAST YEAR’S ALL-IRELAND FINAL

GAA: Donegal star Paul Durcan has candidly spoke about his error in last year's All-Ireland Final defeat to Kerry.

Paul Durcan

Paul Durcan

Durcan was left devastated by his mistake and contemplated walking away from the game he loves.

In a candid interview with BALLS.ie - Durcan revealed how it was the support of the people around him that really helped him to get over the pain of his error.

He praised the role of Donegal manager Rory Gallagher who he said ultimately convinced him to return to the squad ahead of the 2015 season.

Durcan was speaking on a podcast called 'The Hard Shoulder' and vividly recalls the moment he botched his kickout.

Durcan said, "I remember it so well, my heel didn't hit the ground and the ball didn't go in the direction it was supposed to.

"He (Donaghey) got it and clinically dispatched it to the back of the net.

"It's amazing how such a simple mistake can cause you so much pain, but thankfully with the support of those around me I slowly started to get over it.

"I did contemplate walking away but deep down I knew I couldn't finish my Donegal career in them circumstances.

"Rory was very good too. He was in touch with me since he got the job. I was kind of wondering would I go back to it and he convinced me.

"And to be honest I think I had my best year for Donegal this year.

Durcan is a huge fans favourite with Donegal and supporters are hoping he will return for the 2016 season.

Durcan has recently moved to Qatar and that seemed to signal the end of his Donegal career.

However, Durcan has dismissed those suggestions and has claimed he will return for the Ulster SFC next May.
