Otway Golf News:

Congratulations to club President Dessie Crerand on a very successful Presidents day last Saturday at Otway. While the weather has been typically Irish so far this year. GOLF LOGO

Unpredictable, Dessie's guests and club members were blessed with summer temperatures and ideal playing conditions. On the day, the best was kept till last, as Damian Gallagher took to the course as last of the participants, but finished first on the podium to claim Dessie's Presidents prize with 43 pts. In second place on 41 was Peter Friel, pipping brother Philip on break of tie into third. Paul Murray won the gross prize, while the nines went to Shaun Sweeney and Sam Anderson. Sean Duffy hit the longest drive, and nearest the pin was Martin O'Reilly. The ladies 9 hole competition was won by Orla Gallagher with Mary Hasson coming a close second. Well done to Dessie and his partner Joan for organising a very enjoyable day of golf, a tasty bite to eat after battle, and a night of entertainment into the wee hours. The spirit of competition and entertainment continues this Saturday 29th when lady captain Iris Condron hosts her big day, with the gents invited to participate in a nine hole competition at 5pm, and the now-famous barbeque on completion. Best of luck to Iris and all the ladies and gents taking part on the day.

Naomh Muire GAA News:

It was a big championship night in the Banks on Saturday night where Naomh Muire entertained An Tearmann.

The home team had to settled for a point after a point deep into injury time saw the game end in a draw. This was a real cut and thrust Senior battle which ebbed and flowed over the full hour.

For Naomh Muire it was a game which they are disappointed at not winning but one which they will pull many many positives from such was the manner in which they performed with hunger throughout.

They led 0-7 to 0-1 after 15 mins in a period that included two big goal chances but the ever-dogged Termon hit their purple patch and scored 7 points without reply to lead by one at Half time.

The job then was to lift heads and regroup for the second half and this was exactly what happened.

Others would have allowed the reversal of such a lead to effect them but the boys came out with the same hunger as the first half start and for the entire second half took the game to Termon.

Even when Termon got their goal half way through the half to lead by three.

Naomh Muire upped their already massive effort hitting some glorious points and cancelling out the Termon goal in a period of the match where you could only stand back and admire the sheer guts and effort and the determination to take the match by the scruff of its neck.

With injury time being played Naomh Muire ran into a a two point lead and it looked as if a first Senior Championship win in the Banks was on the cards. Senior football can be punishing and when Termon reduced the margin to a point, Naomh Muire still looked as if they would hold out. However a 30 metre free awarded with time up gave Termon the chance to equalize which they did.
A win would have put Naomh Muire in a strong qualifying position and having put in such effort it is natural the team and management will be disappointed. However no supporter left the Banks tonight without full admiration for the manner the lads applied themselves, never giving in to a more experienced and battled hardened Termon side.
Well done to the entire squad and the management team .
Naomh Muire Reserves 1-09 v Termon Reserves 0-07.
In what was yet again another impressive performance by the reserves, the lads kept their Championship hopes very much alive with this win. In a game which saw Termon start strong, the Reserves took control from around the tenth minute and led throughout.
Throughout the year, the reserves have been showing great leaps forward and it has been an outstanding platform where our Seniors of tomorrow are getting game time supported by several experienced lads who have been as steady as hell.
Well done again and great work by all concerned.
Both teams welcome Na Cealla Beaga to the Banks this weekend. The game has in fact been changed to Sunday (30th). Reserves at 12:30 and Seniors at 2pm.
The 100+ Club draw for August will take place on the 26th August in Caisleáin Óir. Can all sellers have your subs in on time so the draw goes ahead as scheduled. Still a few places left. Contact Dónal Ó'Searcaigh and he will get a collector to collect or we can set up a standing order with the bank for payments. For €20 a month you can be in with a chance to share in our monthly payout of  €1400 prize money.
The senior ladies had a good win in the division 3 league match played in the Banks on Sunday 22th August against Cloich Cheann Fhaola. The next game for the Ladies is Sunday 30th Aug in The Banks against Dungloe.
The minor county semi finals see our girls playing Four Masters in Donegal Town on the 6th September. Comghairdeas Leah McGarvey who won Silver Medal with the Rosses/Gaoth Dobhair relay team at the All Ireland community games.

Cloughaneely GAA News:

***Seniors/Reserves***

Cloughaneely

Téann dhá fhoireann Chloich Cheannfhaola go Baile Dhún na nGall Dé Domhnaigh le aghaidh a thabhairt ar na Ceithre Máistrí.
Cloughaneely hosted Glenfin in their 2nd game of the senior Championship, under adverse weather conditions on Sunday last. The incessant rain had a major impact on the game and the playing surface; however despite the inconvenience both senior and reserve teams faced the challenge head on in 2 games which went down to the wire.

***Reserves***
Full Time: CCF 1-09, Glenfin 2-06
The Reserve game ended in a draw. Martin Ferry was the main scorer for the home side where he converted 5 frees with ease. Ciaran Gallagher also was a strong presence in the forward line for the home side, where a combination of efforts of himself and Martin Ferry produced a CCF goal in the 20th min. Glenfin were also awarded a penalty in the 20th min which Paul Bonner stepped up to take, and easily found the back of the net. Shaun McCarthy was back in the fold for the home side and added a point to the CCF tally. The experience of Ciaran McFadden, Joe Boyce, Liam Coyle and Paddy Joe Doohan were a big asset to the home side. Glenfins David Carr had a great 2nd half performance where he did excellent work to find the back of the net to notch up a personal 2nd half tally of 1-02.
CCF: Ciaran Boyce, Daniel Scott, Paddy Joe Doohan, Daniel Roarty, Noel Sweeney, Sean Gallagher, Ronan Cannon, Kevin Scanlon, Ciaran McFadden, Stephen Doohan, Joe Boyce, Sean McCarthy, Mark Harley, Ciaran Gallagher, Martin Ferry

***Seniors***
Glenfin got off to a strong start with Paddy O Connor having a storming start and notching up 2 points within quick succession – this lead stayed with the visitors throughout the game. The visitors made their intentions clear early on, when Gerard Ward brilliantly rounded the CCF defence and was straight in on goal; luckily for the home side his shot hit the post! Denis Boyle got CCF on the scoreboard 6 mins in with a well taken free; which was negated a few mins later by a Glenfin free, which Gerard Ward easily converted. Cloughaneely welcomed Shaun McGarvey back into the senior fold and he made his contribution with a point 14 mins in. Kevin Mulhern showed well for the home side and was involved in many key interceptions. For the home side, Martin McGuire, Ciaran Scanlon and Paul Sweeney all contributed to the 1st half CCF tally, with Paddy O Connor, Gerard Ward, Conor Ward, being the main scorers for Glenfin. Just before the half time whistle Glenfin’s Mark McGinty, gave the visitors an extra boost by hammering home a goal to put them in a satisfactory 4 point lead going in at half time

Half time score: CCF 0-06, Glenfin 1-07.

The goal did not sway the confidence and persistence of the home side going into the 2nd half. Although Glenfin got 2nd half proceedings underway thanks to a Conor Ward point, CCF battled strongly and were awarded a penalty in the 40th minute which was expertly netted by Declan McGarvey to put CCF within 1 point of the visitors, which made for a nail- biting final 20 mins. Glenfin, persistent in their efforts, never let their lead slip. County star Frank McGlynn showed his true colours in the 42nd minute, by notching up a great point after an outstanding run. CCF substitute Cillian Gallagher got his name on the score sheet with an outstanding point from a difficult angle 46 mins in. 52 mins in and Glenfins Gavin McDermott was shown the side-line for a second yellow card offence. Declan McGarvey added 2 further points to his personal tally in the dying minutes of the game. Glenfin again have the sharp shooting of Gerard Ward, Conor Ward and Paddy O Connor to thank for maintaining their lead to finish out the day with a 1 point win!

Final Score CCF: 1-11 Glenfin 1-12

CCF: Shaun McClafferty, John Harley, Conor McGee (0-01), Kevin Mulhern, Eugene McGuire, Cian McFadden, Lee O’Brien, Ciaran Scanlon (0-01), Martin McGuire (0-03), Paddy Cannon, Shaun McGarvey (0-01), Denis Boyle (0-01, 1F), Paul Sweeney (0-01), Declan McGarvey (1-02, 1 P).
CCF Subs: Denis Boyle Black card, replaced by Jason McGee (32 mins). Shaun McGarvey replaced by John McGarvey, 38 mins. Martin McGuire replaced by Cillian Gallagher (0-01) (45 mins)

Aodh Ruadh GAA News:

Meeting

The monthly club meeting takes place this Wednesday, 26th August in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh at 8.30pm. All committee members are asked to attend. Aodh Ruadh

Football

A barn-storming last 15 minutes in Newtowncunningham saw Aodh Ruadh convincingly put their second round championship tie to bed as they ran out 3-13 to 3-7 victors. Ballyshannon got off to a good start, an early Seamus Kane goal carrying them into a four point lead. Naomh Colmcille dominated the middle half hour though and lead 2-4 to 1-5 at the interval, maintaining that lead early in the second half. A brilliant David Dolan goal turned the tide and from there Aodh Ruadh outscored the hosts 1-5 to 0-1 down the stretch. That victory makes it two wins out of two in group 1 of the intermediate championship and puts Ballyshannon in the driving seat for a place in the knock stages. We have a full match report from the game up on aodhruadh.org with pictures to follow.

Meanwhile Aodh Ruadh's chances of progression in the reserve championship were dealt a fatal blow when they lost out to Naomh Colmcille in a nine goal game, 5-16 to 4-8 the final score. The reserves struggled to muster a team to travel to Newtowncunningham for their second championship match. Having lost the first match to Buncrana a win here was a must. The visitors, despite having a much weakened team, gave a great account of themselves in the first half keeping the hosts within sight thanks to goals from Anthony Coughlin and Jamie McDonald. However a couple of fortuitous goals saw the hosts go in at the break leading 3-7 to 2-5. The second half however was much less of a contest as the hosts made the most of the numerical advantage and their subs playing against the 14 weary travellers. They slowly extended their lead throughout the half as fatigue set in among the Ernesiders. Further goals from Niall Thomas and a beauty from Dermot Slevin kept some respectability on the final scoreline of 5-16 to 4-8. A very disappointing day for the lads who made the effort to make the trip. We will have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org later in the week.

Aodh Ruadh are at home this Sunday, 30th August in the championship with Saint Naul's the visitors to Father Tierney Park, throw-in at 3pm. That is preceded by the reserve championship clash with the same opposition at 1.30pm.

Aodh Ruadh played a big role as Donegal won the Jim McGuigan Ulster under 17 competition on Saturday. They defeated Tyrone 3-10 to 0-9 in the semi-final before beating Monaghan 3-14 to 0-7 in the final. Nathan Boyle captained the side, following in the footsteps of another Aodh Ruadh Donegal captain at this competition, Niall Harley.  Shane McGrath played both games, showing well at full forward. Oisin Rooney come on in the final and made a good contribution. Mick McGrath also provided administrative assistance. This is the third year in a row Donegal has won the competition with Aodh Ruadh having substantial involvement in all three wins.

Congratulations to Adam Clarke who won the 58th edition of the Bakery Cup on Wednesday. His side overcame the challenge of Shane Gillespie's men in the final on a scoreline of 6-6 to 4-4. Adam's team was Aaron Duffy, Odhran McGarrigle, Conall Bradshaw, Kyle McCafferty, David Doherty, Ryan McDonald, Daire Warren, Mark McGlynn, Philip Cassidy, Adam McGlone, Jack Hourihane and Shane Carty-Fenlon. The win caps a great year for Adam when he played a real leader's role at centre back in the under 14s. The under 14s hosted Grange for a challenge in the park on Saturday afternoon. It was a relaxed affair with Aodh Ruadh winning well after having previously lost twice to the Sligo side this season.

Under 13 training is now underway on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4.30pm.

There will be under 12 training this Friday at 4.30pm. The Willie Rogers Tournament will take place on Saturday 19th September. With a large attendance of players, mentors and supporters expected a loaf of sandwiches, tray of buns or similar from ALL PLAYERS is absolutely essential. Help will also needed with catering in Aras.

Our under 8s produced their best display of the season on Saturday morning out in Bundoran. They did very well against sides from Bundoran and Naomh Bríd. Many thanks to the Bundoran club for organising the blitz, especially the refs, who were excellent and played the games in the right spirit. The Aodh Ruadh players who took to the pitch in Bundoran were: Anton Duffy, Ben Daly, Bobby Melly, Cádhla Dolan, Che Barron, Cormac Finnegan, Dara McGloin, Dara O'Mahoney, Dáithí Sheerin, Donagh Kelly, Eoghan Gallagher, Eoin Cassidy, Finn Doogan, Garvey Meade, James Gallagher, Joseph Gibbons, Liam Doogan, Oisin Sweeny, Sadhbh Hughes, Sam Davitt, Sean O'Neill, Stephen Doran, Ted O'Donnell, Thomas White and Tomás Keown. Training continues this Friday for the under 8s and under 6s from 6.30pm to 7.30pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

Hurling

Round five fixtures in the hurling championship will take place this Wednesday 26th August at 7pm with Aodh Ruadh hosting Saint Eunan's in Father Tierney Park.

There was no action on the field last week as the under 12s game with Saint Eunan's was rearranged and Buncrana didn't travel for the under 16 game. The under 16s finished fourth in the league and it looks like they'll face a very difficult game away to Buncrana in the semi-final.

The All-Ireland blitzes take place this Saturday and we hope to have players involved in the under 14, under 15 and under 16 squads.

There is an all-county hurling blitz in Convoy on Sunday for the under 8s and under 10s full details later in week.

IF CARLSBERG DID STUDENT ACCOMMODATION……HOTEL RE-OPENS WITH ALL MOD CONS!

Gleneany House Hotel in Letterkenny which has opened to students. Pic by Northwest Newpix.

Students worrying about getting accommodation in Letterkenny have been offered the perfect solution - after a hotel offered them cut-price rooms with all the mod-cons.

Gleneany House on the town's Port Road was once a leading 24 bedroom hotel with a bar and very busy restaurant.

The hotel, which was owned by the kelly family, closed in 2011 but has opened again offering students at Letterkenny Institute of Technology their own rooms.

As well as en-suite bedrooms, the hotel offers students wi-fi to each room, cable television, central heating, dishwasher, microwaves, parking, 24 hour security and even has its own student restaurant.

The hotel is just a two minute walk from the college.

Letting agent for the hotel rooms, Manus McGroddy, said there has been a huge interest in the student hotel.

"I went to college in Dublin many years ago and we certainly didn't have accommodation like this.

"We have put a lot of thought and effort into this because there is a severe accommodation crisis in the town.

"If Carlsberg could do student accommodation then this would be it. We're offering Carlsberg accommodation at Ryanair prices," he said.

Rooms at the student hotel start at €60 a week and Manus says they are filling up fast.

"To be honest, we're down to our last few. It really does tick all the boxes. The hotel was sitting vacant but it was given an overhaul and it is ready for the students now."

Manus said the only thing that was missing was a free bar!

"Unfortunately we aren't going that far but there is plenty of great bars in Letterkenny - not that students would get much time to socialise when they are studying so hard," said Manus.

PINEHILL DANCE STUDIOS OFFER TIPS TO GET YOUR KIDS FIT AND HEALTHY

$
0
0

HEALTH: Pinehill Studios are this week disclosing some tips to give parents in order for them to raise fit, healthy and active children. untitled (587)

Here are some tips for raising fit kids:

  • Help your kids participate in a variety of age-appropriate activities such as activity classes or dance.
  • Establish a regular schedule for physical activity such as a scheduled class with their peers.
  • Incorporate activity into daily routines, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking to the shop.
  • Embrace a healthier lifestyle yourself, so you'll be a positive role model for your family by taking a adult class where you talk to your children about your endeavours to keep fit.
  • Keep it fun, so you can count on your kids to come back for more.
  • Go to the professionals to keep it fun, all classes at Pinehill Studios are led by professional tutors who have years of experience not only in their class content but on how to keep it fun and engaging for the students.

There Are Three Elements of Fitness:

If you've ever watched kids on a playground, you've seen the three elements of fitness in action when they:
1. Run away from the kid who's "it" (endurance)

2.Cross the monkey bars (strength)

3. Bend down to tie their shoes (flexibility)

Parents should encourage their kids to do a variety of activities so that they can work on all three elements.

Endurance: Is developed when kids regularly engage in aerobic activity. During aerobic exercise, the heart beats faster and a person breathes harder. When done regularly and for extended periods of time, aerobic activity strengthens the heart and improves the body's ability to deliver oxygen to all its cells.

Strength: But most kids don't need a formal weight-training program to be strong. Push-ups, stomach crunches, pull-ups, and other exercises help tone and strengthen muscles. Kids also incorporate strength activities in their play when they climb, do a handstand or dance.

Flexibility: Stretching exercises help improve flexibility, allowing muscles and joints to bend and move easily through their full range of motion. Kids look for opportunities every day to stretch when they try to get a toy just out of reach, practice a split, or do a cartwheel or attend a class where it is part of the class curriculum

How Much Exercise Is Enough?

Parents should make sure that their kids get enough exercise. So, how much is enough? Kids and teens get 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) offers these activity guidelines for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children

Age:                                       Minimum Daily Activity:                                               Reference : kidshealth.org

Toddlers                              1 ½ Hours

Preschoolers                     2 hours

School age                          1 or more hours

Infants and young children should not be inactive for prolonged periods of time — no more than 1 hour unless they're sleeping. And school-age children should not be inactive for periods longer than 2 hours!!

At Pinehill Studios all our classes meet the requirements of the Three Elements of Fitness, so whether you want to run, jump or dance you’ll find something to keep your child fit

GAA NEWS: MILFORD ARE NORTHERN DIVISIONAL MINOR CHAMPIONS AFTER VICTORY OVER CLOUGHANEELY

minors (2)*Minor Northern Final*
CLG BnaG 1-12 Cloughaneely 1-8
Na Galloglaigh emerged from this encounter with Cloughaneely as Northern Champions after a hard fought win in Downings. Playing against a stiff breeze the boys started brightly and almost got off to a dream start when man of the match Connor Gormley found himself clean through and bearing down on goal. His effort was well saved by the keeper however Ryan Mcmahon was on hand to tap the rebound over the bar. McMahon added another point seconds later before Gormley added two points of his own to leave the score 0-4 to no score after 6 minutes, a great start considering they were against the breeze. These scores were needed as Cloughaneely began to get back into the game and in the space of a minute scored 1-1 to leave the game all square after 10 minutes. Points from Ryan Spike Flood and Adam Serrinha put Na Galloglaigh ahead again but Cloughaneely responded with two of their own. In the final 10 minutes of the half Gormley (2) and McMahon scored before one last Cloughaneely point to put some breathing room between the sides at half time. The boys would have been delighted to be leading 0-9 to 1-4 at the break considering they would have the advantage of a strong wind for the second period. It didn't work out that way however as Cloughaneely came back with all guns blazing to score 4 unanswered points in the first ten minutes of the half, and Na Galloglaigh looked all at sea. Na Galloglaighs first score of the half came through Serrinha after 43 minutes to leave the boys just a point behind, and a free from Gormley on 52 levelled the game up again. Na Galloglaigh began to regain their composure and after some great work from McMahon and substitute Ryan Toye down the left hand side, full back Kieran Sheridan popped up to put the blues ahead in the 53rd minute. The final insurance score came with five minutes remaining when Na Galloglaigh were awarded a fairly fortuitous penalty. The excellent Martin Doyle went to win a long ball as a Cloughaneely player put the foot out and the referee awarded the penalty which Gormley coolly dispatched. Serrinha had another great goal chance as the game entered injury time but his effort went just wide of the post. As the final whistle went the boys will feel relieved to have gotten over the line after a relatively disappointing second half, although they deserved it on the balance of play throughout the 60 minutes and have been working extremely hard all year. They made hard work of it but nevertheless never stopped and they got their reward. They will feel tonight is only a stepping stone however as they advance to the County Semi Final where they will no doubt be seeking retribution against Bundoran for the loss in the County League Final a few months ago. Time, date and venue for this match to be announced. Team: Gavin McFadden, Patrick Ferry, Kieran Sheridan (0-1), Shay Durning, Cormac Toland, Ronan Docherty, Odhrán Coll, Ryan McMahon (0-3), Luke Trearty, Conor Mc Hugh, Adam Serrinha (0-2), Ryan Flood (0-1), Martin Doyle, Connor Gormley (1-5), Gavin Grier. Subs: Ryan Toye for McHugh (52m), Dane Dunworth for Flood (55m), Peter Curran for Ferry (56m), Paddy Mc Carron for Doyle (60m), James Mc Callum, Jamie-Lee Blaney

*Intermediate Championship*
CLG BnaG v Naomh Brid
Moyle Park, Saturday @ 5 & 6.30pm
It is do or die for our Seniors in the Intermediate Championship this weekend as they take on Naomh Brid at home. Having beaten Burt at the weekend the boys now have 2 points in the group, the same as Naomh Brid who also defeated Burt but were defeated by Bundoran. The Reserves also need a win and also for other results to go their way as they also take on Naomh Brid at home. Throw in times are 5pm for the Reserves and 6.30pm for the Seniors.

*Ladies All Ireland Quarter Final*
Hard luck to Amber Barrett and the rest of the Donegal team and management who were defeated by Armagh in the All Ireland Quarter Final on Saturday by 2-13 to 2-11. Amber started in full forward for Donegal as the newly crowned Ulster Champions were pipped at the post again by Armagh. Hard luck to all involved but well done on a great year which saw a historic first Ulster title for Donegal Ladies.

*Chicago Championship*
Well done to Caoimhe Barrett who was part of the Aisling Gaels side that defeated St Bridgets in the Final of the Chicago Championship at the weekend. Caoimhe scored 1-4 from centre half forward for the Gaels as they won 6-7 to 1-10 to advance to the North American Finals in a few weeks time.

*Seniors*
Burt 1-7 CLG BnaG 2-8
Our Seniors left Hibernian Park tonight with two vital Championship points after a high intensity clash with Burt. Na Galloglaigh got off to a good start with points from Pauric Curley and Luke Barrett putting them two points clear after 2 minutes however Burt responded with two frees from Mark Coyle. It was a hard hitting and physical encounter throughout the 60 minutes but wasn't necessarily rough with referee Shane Toolan letting the game flow. Cathal Mc Gettigan landed a great 45 to edge Na Galloglaighs noses in front again after 17 minutes but Coyle once again equalised with 10 minutes to go, in what transpired to be Burts last score of the half. Two more points from McGettigan and another from Curley saw the lads in a good position going into the break before Joey Cullen pounced for a goal right at the end of the half. A high ball in from Luke Barrett was well won by Cullen and he kept his cool to slide the ball under the Burt keeper and into the back of the net. The second half brought more of the same intensity from both sides and it took 5 minutes for the scoreboard to move again, McGettigan with another free. Conor Harkin scored a free a minute afterwards and seconds after that Harkin had the ball in the net with a very similar finish to Cullens. This just left two between the sides with Burt coming more and more into the game. The defence did well dealing with the majority of what Burt threw at them and especially under some high balls. With 10 minutes to go Luke Barrett added another point but yet again Burt came back with a score from Coyle. With 9 minutes left on the clock Gavin Grier received a black card for a pull back which saw the introduction of Kieran Mc Laughlin in his place. A score from the Burt full back Georgie Kelly with 3 minutes left put the minimum between the sides and made for a nervy finale as the boys knew there was going to be a lot of injury time. A bad injury to Enda McDermott early in the half saw 5 minutes of injury time added to the clock and just before the game entered injury time Na Galloglaigh got a crucial score. Pauric Curley did brilliantly to intercept a short Burt kickout and saw himself and Christopher Barrett two on one with the keeper, with Curley unselfishly passing to Barrett who finished into an open net to put 4 between the sides again. Joe Boyle received a black card in injury time for Burt for a rather cynical sliding tackle from behind on Cullen but it mattered not as the game finished 1-7 to 2-8 to Na Galloglaigh with a hard fought and hard earned win. WIth 1 win from 2 in their Championship match the boys now have a huge game against Naomh Brid in the final match of the group stage at home next Sunday. Team: Sean Gallagher, Kieran Sheridan, Sean Black, Gary Merritt, Tj Evesson, Enda McHugh, Gavin Grier, Joey Cullen (1-0), Jonny Logue, Pauric Curley (0-2), Luke Barrett (0-2), Kyle Black, Christopher Barrett (1-0), Cathal McGettigan (0-4), Paddy Peoples. Subs: Kieran McLaughlin for Grier (51m, BC), Adam Serrinha for K. Black (56m), Gavin McFadden, Barry McNulty, Dean Burgess, Shay Durning, Paul Grier

*Reserves*
Burt 0-12 CLG BnaG 1-6
Na Galloglaigh will feel they left this game behind them this evening yet on the flip side Burt will probably feel they should have won by more having squandered numerous scoring opportunities. Indeed the majority of these chances were handed to them on a proverbial plate through bad passes and poor play from Na Galloglaigh. They were confident going at half time a point ahead thanks to an Adam Serrinha knowing that theu hadn't really got started yet and that there was a lot more in them, but it just never got going in the second half either, and ultimately were defeated by 3 points. The focus for the Reserves now turns back to the league campaign with them sitting top of the Division 3 Reserve league and highly reluctant to relinquish that position. Before that however the boys will be in Championship action again next Sunday when they take on Naomh Brid at home in the final group game. Team: Gavin McFadden, Shay Durning, Barry McNulty, Gearoid Horkan, Conor McNulty, Paul Grier (0-1), Dean Burgess (0-2), Kieran Gorman, Anthony Fisher, Luke Trearty, Paul Fisher, Emmet Conaghan, Ciaran McHugh (0-1), Adam Serrinha (1-1), Hugh Mc Menamin (0-1). Subs: Paul Sweeney for Conaghan (21m), Cormac Friel for C. McNulty (40m), James Whelan for McMenamin (53m), Paddy Mc Carron for Trearty (55m), Eddie Boyce, Connor Jason Meakin

*Minor Championship Semi Final*

*Minor Ladies County Semi Final*
CLG BnaG 4-4 Naomh Conaill 5-12
Hard luck to our Minor Ladies who were defeated by Naomh Conaill in the County Semi Final yesterday in Convoy. This is a very young Minor team with only three of the girls Minor age, the rest made up of U14s & U16s so this squad has a bright future and this result should hold them in good stead for years to come.

Choctaw Indian Waylon Gary White Deer

A unique famine commemoration walk will take place in Co Donegal this Sunday.

Action from Ireland (Afri) announces the first Ballyshannon Famine Walk, in conjunction with the Ballyshannon Regeneration Group, is to be held as part of National Heritage Week. Beginning at 2:15 pm.

The walk will proceed from the Famine workhouse in Ballyshannon to the Famine graveyard behind St Annes Church, where a lecture by well known historian Anthony Begley will highlight the afternoon's activities.

"The walk is to honour the memory of Ireland's Famine dead, and in remembering, to help heal" said Choctaw Indian Waylon Gary White Deer, an Afri organiser.

In 1847, the Choctaw donated monies from "meagre resources" to feed Irish Famine victims.

"We will also be walking to show solidarity with those who still hunger in a world of plenty" Maire Nic Fhearraigh, another organiser added.

"And we are very pleased to be working with the Ballyshannon Regeneration Group, who are hosting this important event"

There are no fees for the walk or the lecture, and the public is cordially invited to participate.

SEAMUS COLEMAN –“I HOPE TO GO BACK HOME AND PLAY GAELIC FOOTBALL WHEN I RETIRE”

SPORT: Seamus Coleman has yet again reiterated his love of the GAA by stating that he'd love to return to play the game when he retires from professional football. Seamus Coleman

Coleman is only 26, so retirement is a long, long way off but he says he still harbours ambitions to play GAA when he finishes with football.

Coleman has revealed his admiration for the sport in the past and credits the game for helping him when he first moved to Sligo Rovers from local club St Catherine's.

However, it was the lure of being able to play the game professionally which prompted Coleman to focus his concentrations on soccer and he decided to move away from the GAA at 17.

Despite that decision he has never lost his love or respect for the sport and says he hopes to return home when he retires and play Gaelic for his local GAA club Killybegs.

Coleman said, "‘I was a far better Gaelic player than I was a soccer player, but you are not going to make a career in Gaelic football.

‘The players train like professionals but they aren’t getting paid. At 17, I decided to take soccer more seriously.’

Coleman famously moved to Everton for just €60,000 in one of the best pieces of transfer business ever done by the club.

He has gone on to establish himself as one of the best full-backs in the Premiership and has earned 28 international caps.

Coleman will hope he can continue to perform at the highest level for the next decade or so.

Then he hopes to return home and start playing GAA again with Killybegs.

‘I have a massive respect for Gaelic football and I hope I can go back and play it again.

"You can play at 36 or 37 if you look after yourself.

Glenswilly GAA notes

Glenswilly lays Finbarr to rest

The huge attendance at the funeral of club stalwart Finbarr Glackin on Sunday last spoke volumes of the highest regard in which he was held by club and the community.
A founding member and the club president, Finbarr epitomised all that is good about the GAA and the local community.
From the first green shoots of Glenswilly GAA Club, Finbarr had been one of the club's making driving force and held numerous positions throughout his life.
The club, from juvenile members, up to the senior team and club executive, formed a guard of honour as his remains were brought for funeral mass.
GAA club representatives from across Donegal including the Donegal County Executive turned up to pay their last respects to Finbarr.
The huge numbers at his wake at his home in Barack was also testament to the high regard in which he was held by neighbours and friends.
Club chairman Peter McConnell expressed his sympathy on behalf of the club to Finbarr's wife and eight sons and extended family circle.
Just hours after his funeral mass, the senior team put in a convincing display to reach the quarter finals of the senior club championship.
No doubt Finbarr was looking down on a rain-soaked Foxhall with a proud smile.
May he rest in peace.

Training of the U13 boys continues on Friday nights and txts will go out to players abut times, etc.

The Under 10s took two teams to Malin Town on Saturday last for a terrific underage blitz involving several clubs. Both teams, under coaches Gerard McGrenra, Paddy McAteer, Lee Gildea and Labhaoise Maguire, turned in some super displays of football. The club would like to thank the Malin club for their terrific organisation and hospitality on the day. Many parents also traveled the long distance to support the young players and this was very much appreciated by the club.

Seniors

Despite the atrocious conditions, the seniors enjoyed a solid championship win over Malin on Sunday evening last. A great team display by the lads saw them through to the quarter final of the competition. Keep it up lads.

The lads who have come together to form Team Donegal Oil.

Four well known Donegal lads have teamed up with local company Donegal Oil Company to form “Team Donegal Oil” for a very special race.

Gavin Harris, Arthur McMahon, Michael McGarvey and Sean McFadden will take to their bikes and take part in the “Race Around Ireland”.

They will join cyclists from all over the world on Sunday 30th of August 2015, at Trim Castle, County Meath for the 7th Race Around Ireland and The Irish Ultra Challenge.

This event is 2,100km long and is ranked the highest event in the UMCA World Cup calendar and these boys from county Donegal are certainly gearing up for the challenge.

Training hard with their own sports and taking part in many adventure races & events over the last number of years makes them no strangers to this type of non-stop cycling challenge.

The four boys will take part in the relay cycle, which will be non stop 24 hours a day! They have 5 days to finish the cycle relay and hope to have it completed in less than 4 days, 1 days ahead of the allotted time. The Race around Ireland is listed as one of the world’s toughest endurance events but also allows amateur riders to compete with elite riders from all over the world!

These Donegal lads are no strangers to cycling and sport, especially Sean McFadden from Letterkenny who has achieved hugely successful triathlon, cycling, adventure racing and running wins. Sean was winner of The Race 2015 and runner up of The Race 2014, he finished top 3 in Ras Mumhan, An Post Ras 2 years in row and Lough Keep Triathlon Winner 2014.

Arthur McMahon played rugby till he was 36 and after taking part in the Donegal Coastal Cancer Challenge in 2013, to raise money for the Donegal Hospice after his mum sadly passed away from cancer, he has been taking part in many adventure challenges ever since and admits himself he is “hooked".

Michael McGarvey, originally from Falcarragh, living in Letterkenny is another avid rugby player with Letterkenny Rugby Club, he is training hard for this event and regularly takes part in local charity events, just last week he participated in the WAAR, Wild Atlantic Adventure Race.

And last but not least, Gavin Harris from Convoy, the team's Ironman has been taking part in cycling races since 2007 and is delighted to be part of “Team Donegal Oil”.

Not only is this a challenge for themselves personally as “Team Donegal Oil” but they are delighted that they can also raise money for Donegal’s Austism Family Support Group. The Donegal Autism Family Support Group was set up 9 years ago to support parents, families and individuals on the autism spectrum.

All the members of the group all work on a voluntary basis and their aims are to support families and to offer children the opportunity to take part in a number of different activities without being judged. They are actively raising autism awareness within their children's community.

“We are delighted that we can support The Autism Family Support Group” a very hard working worthwhile charity who do great work under the radar and they deserve support” say’s Arthur McMahon.

On the build up to “The Race Around Ireland” they have organised a Coffee Morning in Donegal Oil, Port Road, Letterkenny on Wednesday morning 26th August at 10am in aid of the Donegal based Autism Family Support Group. And would love to see as many people there as possible.

You can follow “Team Donegal Oil” online on their Facebook page -https://www.facebook.com/TeamDonegalOil and thank you to everyone help them raise some money for their charity however small or large and who knows for these Donegal lads, perhaps the next challenge will be to “Race around America” ?
