The Termon GAA 50th celebrations got under way yesterday when a large crowd attended at the Burn road pitch.
A great evenings craic was had by everyone however there was also some controversy during the evening.
The first game of the day was between the U14/16 girls and their “mammies”.
Referee Trevor Alcorn got the game under way at 6.00pm sharp and the mammies got off to a storming start with the superbly athletic Mairead Giles causing the “wains” all sorts ofproblems ably assisted by the youthful Annette Coleman.
The ladies soon went into a 2 point lead. However the “wains” rallied and scored 2 quick goals from Holly Mc Daid and Daria Mc Glynn. The game continued at a frantic pace and at half time the wains were leading by 5 points.
A mystery then arose with the disappearance of the referee and Eugene Trearty took over the whistle.
Things slowly descended into chaos and soon the Ladies were down to 18 players following the sendings off of Lisa Mc Glynn and Noreen Trearty.
The wains responded and introduced 6 subs but the ladies went on an all out attack and with only minutes left on the clock were awarded a penalty.
The ref couldn’t find the penalty spot and placed the ball what appeared to be approximately 6 yards from the goals.
Team captain Deirdre Galligan Gallagher showed her leadership qualities and took the penalty.
The ball trickled across the line to leave the scores level.
The final score was approximately Ladies 4.5 Wains 3.8.
The next game on the agenda was between the current mens Senior team and the Senior County finalists of 2003.
This game was a highly entertaining and competitive affair played at a high pace.
The teams swapped scores for the whole first half with former county stars John Mc Cafferty and Tommy Ryan causing havoc in the current teams defence.
Between them they contributed a total of 5 goals during the course of the game.
At half time the score was even at 1.7 each.
The early part of the second half proved to be the decisive period in the game when the 03 team scored 2 goals in quick succession.
The current team, with Gavin Gorman and Marty Sweeney putting in a great shift, rallied but could not get back on terms .
The 03 defence stood firm and held out in a tense and exciting finish.
Best for the current team were Keelan Mellett , Joe English and Daniel Conaghan. Starring for the 03 team were Brendan Gallagher, PJ Mc Fadden and Pauric Hilferty.
Final score “2013″ team 3.11. “2003″ team 5.11.
The next item on the agenda was the selection of the Termon Rose in the marquee.
A large crowd was in attendance for what proved to be a an enjoyable and at times hilarious affair.
The Roses wowed the crowd with their beauty and talent and the eventual winner was Emer Gallagher. Congrats Emer.
However one contestant caused a big stir – The Boston Rose. A lovely “decent” girl she/he appeared to be overawed by the occasion and her mild and shy manner certainly won over the crowd.
