O’Neill was delighted by the reaction from his players and their performance throughout.

He admitted that Ireland will face sterner tests than Latvia throughout his tenure but was impressed with a number of players with Coleman gaining praise from the new gaffer.

He told RTE Sport, “It was an excellent performance, we played some lovely football and it was a great confidence booster for some of the players out there.

“The crowd got behind them and the players sensed that, they enjoyed it and while we’ll face tougher tests down the road than Latvia it was great to get the win.

“Robbie does what he has done his whole career and it was an instinctive finish  for the first goal, Aiden scored a terrific goal and it’s been well noted he hasn’t scored enough at international level but hopefully that can spark a run form him.

“For the third goal it was a cracking move, Seamus Coleman showed terrific pace and desire to overlap Jon Walters and it was a tap in for Shane Long.

“It was a really great team goal with great aspects of play throughout the move.

“We look forward now to Poznan and Poland next week, it will be a good test.
