The Donegal GAA management and playing staff have been commended by Stradbally Parish Gaels in Laois for the warmth and hospitality shown to them by Jim McGuinness and his team.
Donegal renowned for their class on the pitch over recent years memorably capturing back to back Ulster titles as well as the All-Ireland title in 2012 have shown they’re just as classy off it.
Donegal Daily received the following letter sent by Donal Horgan the secretary of Stradbally Parish Gaels.
We are a small juvenile football club, an amalgamation of the three senior clubs of Stradbally, Timahoe & Annanough.
We compete from under 13 to under 21. Thereafter their players revert back to their home clubs.
Our current under 14 panel won last years’ under 13 championship and to acknowledge their achievement on Sunday we took them to O’Moore Park, Portlaoise for the National Football League game between Laois and Donegal.
We made contact with the Donegal County Board a week before the game to ask if any of the team or management had a minute would they have a word or two with their lads.
The response was immediate, warm and generous.
Once the game was finished and the players had a chance to change they’d be delighted to come out to us.
As it happens, Donegal invited our lads, all 28 of them into their dressing room.
We announced as they entered that it would be a big honour for them to get a chance to meet the Laois U13 champions.
The roar the Donegal team gave our young lads was incredible.
Every one of our lads got to shake hands with all the players.
Soon afterwards Jimmy McGuinness arranged all his players and ours for photographs.
Not only the chaps but the three adults with them were star-struck, and still are.
Donegal made a good few friends and admirers around Stradbally on Sunday.
I have no doubt you have helped inspire a panel of players now bursting to get back training and playing football.
Thanks to all concerned.
The only down side to our whole day was the result out on the field where you hammered us.
Donal Horgan
Secretary,
Stradbally Parish Gaels
