Swilly Rovers 3

Harps started this game brightly and created a number of half chances, there best coming from Buchanan who’s shot was blocked by Fisher which was well set up by Aaron Scanlon. There efforts paid off as on 14mins they took the lead after great work between Darragh Black, Jp Malley played in Aaron Scanlon who finished expertly past Wade. Swilly responded well and created a number of chances, McHugh had a great chance to level as when he was played in by Jordan Toland, he rounded the keeper and Porter somehow got back to clear it off the line. Mark McGinley then made a great double save to deny Michael McHugh twice and from the resulting corner David Fisher headed wide. Conor McGlynn then made a great block to deny the onrushing McGeever at the back post. Harps finished the half brightly and had some neat passages of play in midfield and held out until the break. The second half didn’t take long to get going and with just 30 seconds gone Swilly equalised as from a Liam O’Donnell flick on, Laurence Toland finished at the back post to put Swilly back on terms. Darren McGeever had a chance shortly after and McGinley made a great reaction to keep the scores level. Harps got back in the game and started to push forward and from a Darragh Black cross Jp Malley headed home in the 65th minute to put Harps back in the lead. Dean McConnell had a good chance to extend the lead but he shot over under pressure from McDaid. In the 70th minute, Swilly equalised yet again as McGeever shot home from a Fisher cross. Both sides pushed on for the winner and the away side managed to get the winner in the last minute as from a Toland corner, Marty Boyle connected perfectly and finished high into the roof of the net to give Swilly the victory. A good enjoyable game all round.

Finn Harps: Mark Anthony McGinley, Conor McGlynn, Hugh Moy, Shane Porter, Dylan Quinn, David Ward, Dean McConnell, Shane Buchanan, JP Malley, Darragh Black, Aaron Scanlon.

Swilly Rovers: Gareth Wade, David Fisher, Jordan Toland, Marty Boyle, Gareth Colhoun, Marty McDaid, Liam O’Donnell, Dylan Hegarty, Michael McHugh, Laurence Toland, Darren McGeever. Subs: Kyle Black for O’Donnell, Daniel O’Donnell for Fisher, Darren Dunworth for McHugh).

Success for club athletes on many fronts

Last weekend was a roller coaster of successes for club members on the competitive front. On the track a number travelled to Antrim for the final section of the Ulster/ANI Track and Field c/ships while on the road numerous fine performances were recorded at the Lifford 5k [Friday evening] and Enniskillen 10k. The Mullaghmore Sprint Triathlon had ideal conditions and again a large number of club athletes, many completing their first triathlon, recorded excellent times. Finally on Saturday evening Karl Griffin, who continues his build up towards the World Junior C/ships in Oregon, in July recorded another sub 1min 50secs /800m time at an Irish Milers Club meet in Dublin.

Antrim – Saturday – Excellent results/performances this morning at the Antrim Forum from Clara Herron,30.70m, U17Hammer,PB and Gold. Later in the day Clara added a 2nd winning performance of 10.52m in the Shot Putt. Chloe Masterson, records 26.30m, in the Hammer and Silver while Pole Vaulters, Caoimhe Byrne, 2.60m/PB Gold and Katie Hoad,2.50m/PB and Gold – in different age groups. Caolan O’Callaghan clears 1.75m to win the U18 High Jump. Christopher Doherty travelled last week to the MPT in Belfast to compete in the Pole Vault. Result — the event was cancelled due to a waterlogged venue. Today he returned to Antrim and responded by clearing a new P.B. height of 4.10m – well done Christopher, Caolan, Katie, Caoimhe, Chloe and Clara.

On the Road.

On Friday evening, at a well-supported and organised 5k in Lifford the following club athletes won category prizes Richard McCarthy, M50, 18mins 30secs; Donal Haughey, M55, 19mins 51secs; Jackie Harvey, W50, 22mins 27secs and Vera Haughey 22mins27secs.On Saturday over 1,000 finishers were recorded at the Enniskillen 10k. Pride of place must go to Ballyshannon man Daniel Mannion who won the junior section with an excellent time of 40mins55secs. Other local athletes to come home very pleased were Brendan Ward, 37mins 42secs;Chris Goan, 43.42;Rodney Irwin,M40, 45.02; Kevin Coyle, 46.44; Terry Hughes, 48.45; Brain McMullan, M45, 48.38; Loretta Cullen, W45, 49.10; ; Craig Hill, 52.27John Magee, M45, 52.28; Michael Gallagher, M40, 53.17;Christopher McGee, 59.31. One club athlete made the journey with the goal of running a PB. However Sharon Thomas-Meehan got held up in an accident traffic jam and missed the start by a few minutes. She indicates that she does not want sympathy.

The Mullaghmore Sprint Triathlon attracted a large number of club athletes – all members of the MSC Tri club – to the scenic Mullaghmore Peninsula for the annual nationally recognised swim, cycle and run. The following, many completing their first triathlon, all were deservedly very proud as they crossed the finish line having completed the final 5k run. A small problem with the results service means that the results are provisional and according to the organisers a few maybe missing. Results –Noel Hoey, M45, 1hr14mins9secs; Ciaran Clancy, M30, 1.14.34; Barry Duffy, M45, 1.15.28;Barry Cannon, M40, 1.17.17; Julie McMullan, F45, 1.19.04; Barry Gallagher, 1.20.12; Gerry McManus, M50, 1.22.44; Eleanor Rooney, 1.23.35;Ann Morrow, F50, 1.25.43; Paul McGee, 1.26.04; Pamela Sarb, 1.26.45;Sinead McGowan, F40, 1.30.04; Lynda Loughlan,1.31.45; Elizabeth Morrow, 1.32.27

Karl Griffin runs a PB at Dublin meet

In Irishtown at an Irish Milers Club sponsored meet in Irishtown, on Saturday evening, Karl Griffin runs 1min 49.52secs,a PB and the 4th sub 1min 50secs in as many weeks. The race won by English athlete Joe Maynard found less that 0.2 secs separating the following three athletes. Karl was overhauled by David McCarthy, nephew of club road athlete/coach, in the final 50metres. Early this week McCarthy was selected on the Irish team for the Europa Cup in Estonia next weekend. Karl continues to improve and is looking forward to the World Junior U20 in Oregon in late July

apple-iphone-5-frontA DONEGAL man was arrested when trying to get a new sim card for a stolen mobile phone – when a text message came through from its owner.

A court heard how staff then alerted Gardaí when the text read: “This phone has been stolen.”

The incredible coincidence led to the arrest of a Letterkenny man who this week pleaded guilty to possession of stolen goods.

Inspector David Kelly told Letterkenny District Court that the expensive iPhone 5 had been stolen from a handbag at The Pulse nightclub in January this year.

Patrick McDonagh, who is 34 and with an address at 54 The Elms, Glencar, Letterkenny, went into the Meteor Shop in Letterkenny Shopping Centre on January 27 this year and handed over an iPhone 5, asking staff to insert a new sim.

“He told staff he was having trouble with it and wanted a new sim,” said Inspector Kelly.

Staff alerted Gardai as McDonagh left the shop – but he was later identified by CCTV footage.

Defence solicitor Patsy Gallagher said McDonagh had bought the phone at a car boot sale for €150 and had no idea it had been stolen.

“It was on offer for more than that by Mr McDonagh haggled down the price. There is no loss in relation to the matter,” said Mr Gallagher.

But Judge Paul Kelly disagreed.

“The owner was deprived of this phone for a period of time You don’t bet an iPhone 5 for €150 and there wouldn’t be thefts if there wasn’t a market for stolen property,” said the judge.

He fined the father of four €250. McDonagh was given six months to pay with five days in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

gavel1A FINTOWN man found “swinging off bars” on Letterkenny main street after a night on the drink was arrested after declining two Garda requests for him to move on.

John Quinn, from Daraghan Beag, was causing havoc in the early hours of March 1 last, roaring and shouting abuse at people.

Defence solicitor Kieran Dillon said the 22-year-old rarely drank and on this occasion had too much.

Quinn, he said, had gone out for the night “and didn’t do a very good job of it.”

Garda Sean McGarry said Quinn was likely do himself more harm than anyone else. His memory of events were limited.

Quinn admitted being drunk and disorderly and failing to follow the directions of a Garda. He was fined €200.

MORE THAN 1,000 PEOPLE SIGN PETITION TO SAVE DUNGLOE LIBRARY

$

A petition to Donegal County Council and to the County Librarian, with over 1,000 signatures, has been collected in The Rosses area to save Dungloe Library.Library1

Petitioners want cuts to staffing levels and opening hours to be reversed.

They are also calling for the library to remain in its current location at Ionad Teampaill Chróine.

Councillors in the Glenties Municipal District were presented with a copy of the petition at their inaugural meeting in Dungloe this week.

The petition has also been sent to Eileen Burgess, County Librarian and to Seamus Neely, County Manager at Donegal Co Council, and Michael O’hEanaigh, Director of Community, Culture and Planning at Donegal County Council.

A spokesman said people in The Rosses are upset about the recent cut to the library’s opening times and the threat to move the library from its current location in Ionad Teampaill Chróine to the Public Services Building in Dungloe.

“The recent decision to close the library on Saturdays has been a major blow to Dungloe. Many people from the surrounding areas came to Dungloe to shop on Saturdays, and to use the library. Without the library they may choose to shop elsewhere, with access to a library.

“The one late night opening was very useful to many people who are at work or college during the day. Students in the area who have just completed their junior and leaving certificates hugely missed the lack of a library facility on any evening and on Saturdays in Dungloe,” said the spokesman.

Since the departure of one member of staff in April, the library must now close when the current sole staff member is not there – at lunchtimes but also during annual or sick leave.

“A town library having to close because of staff leave is not acceptable,” added the spokesman.

The library is an anchor tenant in the Ionad Teampall Chroine building and a move to the Public Services Building in Dungloe would have a negative impact on Dungloe – a town which is struggling to survive.

The Ionad hosts various functions that are enhanced by the library’s presence in the building, for eg, the annual cultural and literary Peadar O’Donnell weekend. The Ionad is a focus for arts and heritage and an integral part of the town.

The building, which was the old chapel in Dungloe, was renovated some years ago at a considerable cost and community effort and houses the library, a café, tourist information desk as well as a centre which runs classes and hosts arts events.

“The people of the Rosses are calling on Donegal County Council to employ another member of staff to enable the library to continue to serve the public well and for the well being of the town.

“The county council need to push for an exemption to the recruitment embargo for libraries in the county. We can’t be without a library service just because staff retire or leave,” added the spokesman.

Any hope Donegal were harboring of Mark McHugh lining out in this year’s All Ireland championship have disappeared as he boards a flight for America this morning.

Mark McHugh

The Kilcar man will spend the summer in New York playing his football there.

The 2012 All-Star stunned manager Jim McGuinness and his team-mates when he pulled out of the Donegal squad after th league campaign.

Donegal will now have to plan without McHugh as they face Antrim in the Ulster semi-final this Sunday in Clones.

Donegal captain Michael McHugh had said recently that the door was always open for a return.

But it appears, for this season at least, that McHugh will not be part of the campaign.

BALLYBOFEY CHINESE TAKEAWAY STAFF WERE LIVING ILLEGALLY IN DONEGAL, COURT TOLD

Mr Low: Jailed for 7 days

Mr Low: Jailed for 7 days

FOUR Malaysian nationals arrested at a Ballybofey Chinese takeaway were living in Donegal illegally.

One of them later gave a false name to Gardaí who managed to discover she left Malaysia 14 years ago after a conviction for breaking into a house.

The details of the case emerged during a court case where all four pleaded guilty to failing to register with the authorities in the State.

Mei Ling Chen, 56, from the Lee Ho Chinese in Navenny Street, Ballybofey, was in fact Toh Kim Lia, 54, Detective Sergeant Stephen McGonagle told Letterkenny District Court.

“We still don’t know how she entered the country. She says she arrived here in a container 20 years ago but we’ve spoken to Malaysian police and she has a conviction there 14 years ago for what was described as ‘housebreaking’,” said DS McGonagle.

The charges arose after a search under the Drugs Act on January 21 this year. All four are facing other charges.

DS McGonagle said offices had established that couple Ching Am Low and Li Jiuan Choog flew into Heathrow with a child on October 29, 2012 as visitors to the UK which allowed them to stay for six months. They had flown on to Belfast City Airport after their arrival in London.

They were joined my Ms Choog’s mother Sam Pohs Ooi who is 61.

All were working here illegally.

Solicitor Frank Dorrian said the couple had flown to Britain from Kuala Lumpar; they paid 2,500 sterling for the flights and through circumstances had ended up in Co Donegal.

“They were economic refugees from their own country; they found their situation in Europe worsened due to unreliable parties in the UK and quickly discovered – like a lot of Irish people who have gone overseas – that the streets weren’t paved with gold,” he said.

“They found themselves beholding to others under circumstances where they are not entitled to any kind of social welfare and they lived an unhappy existence under a cloud of fear, fear of detection. They were unable to save any money.

“Effectively they were here at a substance level. This was a crime driven by much more laudable ambitions,” said Mr Dorrian.

Solicitor Patsy Gallagher, representing Sam Pohs Ooi, told Judge Paul Kelly: “This lady found herself in an alien country and in alien culture. She is a very pleasant woman who was here to help her child, her son in law and their grandchild. She is a little lost in the whole case.”

He said Toh had found herself working underground in takeaways in Donegal.

He said she also denied having any convictions on Malaysia.

All four, who are in custody, were given seven days in prison for entering Ireland illegally.

The film tells the story of Brendan and Aisling, a couple who have lived together in Donegal for twenty-five years. Their lives are relatively uneventful… until one day, a strange new neighbour chops down their tree.

When Aisling informs their neighbour of her mistake, the woman invites Aisling to cut down one of her trees in retaliation. Brendan relishes the opportunity for payback, whilst Aisling is determined to forgive and forget. But the woman continues to wheedle her way into the couple’s lives, and soon Aisling is forced to make a hard choice.

The film stars veterans of the Irish screen and stage Bairbre Ní Caoimh and Nichola MacEvilly, in an Irish language script by Emma Carlson.

Núala Ní Dhomhnaill is one of Ireland’s preeminent poets, and writes exclusively in Irish. Her work has been translated to English by Paul Muldoon, Seamus Heaney, and Medbh McGuckian. An Crann appears in Ní Dhomhnaill’s 1988 Rogha Dánta: Selected Poems.

Kieran Cunningham has already paid back more than €2,200 to the bank which he admitted obtaining cash from using a false instrument in 2008.

In total Cunningham obtained more than €5,800 from the bank.

The kitchen porter, with an address at 67 Meadowbank, Letterkenny paid another €100 to the bank at Letterkenny District Court yesterday.

Solicitor Kieran Dillon said his client was trying his best as he was unemployed and of limited means.

He added that Cunningham was on jobseeker’s allowance and was hoping something would come along on the job front.

However Judge Paul Kelly said “This is going to go on forever unless something happens.”

He adjourned the case until September 18th to allow further payments to be made.

He also urged Mr Dillon to explore if family and friends could help with the repayments but was told that they were also of limited means.
