MAN WHO STARTED ROW OUTSIDE HOTEL HAS STARTED NEW LIFE IN AUSTRALIA

A young Dungloe man who has started a new life in Australia has been fined €250 for using threatening and abusive language outside a Letterkenny Hotel.gavel1

Robert Hanlon, 19, was spotted by Gardai arguing with a man outside Dillon’s Courtyard Hotel at 2.40am on March 15th last year.

Gardai said he was acting in an aggressive manner and he was asked to move on.

He was again asked to move on but Hanlon, of Pole Road, Meenmore, Dungloe, refused and was eventually arrested.

The accused man’s solicitor Frank Dorrian said his client was now living in Perth, Australia and was making a new life for himself.

He said he had given him detailed instructions to pass onto the court saying that he had been employed for six months and had not been in any kind of trouble since arriving in Australia.

“He acknowledges alcohol is a problem and he has apologised to Gardai,” said Mr Dorrian.

Judge Paul Kelly said he was prepared to deal with the matter by way of a fine if Hanlon lodged €250 with the court.

GOVERNMENT INVOLVED IN DECEPTION OVER GLENVEAGH JOBS – CLLR Mac GIOLLA EASBUIG

Donegal county councillor Micheal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig has reacted strongly to claims from the Department of Heritage that the partial privatisation of shuttle bus services at Glenveagh National Park will result in job creation.

Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig

Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig

The Independent councillor asked if more jobs will now be available where will they be advertised so that people can apply?

“The truth is that there will be no new jobs. The introduction of a private contractor opens the door to the gradual privatisation of the entire service.

“It is a cruel deception from the Department to raise hopes of new jobs in our county. They say that there are currently two full time and four part time staff at Glenveagh operating the present bus service, but have failed to mention that there is an additional standby driver used at peak periods in the months of July and August. This driver has already been told his services are no longer required. He will be replaced by the private contractor.

“There are fears that as staff retire or leave, they will not be replaced, but that the privatised element will be expanded, a process of privatisation by stealth. This is what has effectively happened to the catering service in Glenveagh. After the bus staff, the garden staff could be next,” he claimed.

Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig said he raised the question of where the privatisation agenda was coming from.

“Was it from local management or the Department? The deceptive statement from the Department makes it clear it is coming from them. It is idealogically driven.

“Where is the cost saving in replacing a seasonal bus driver who is on the minimum wage? It can only make sense if there is a more widespread agenda to save money through wholesale privitisation. I stand over my statement of last week that this will lead to job losses.

“I remain totally opposed to this race to the bottom and offer the workforce in Glenveagh my full support.”

DDTV: First there was ‘Donegal Is Happy’ on Oprah – now Hollywood Actor Paul Rudd has spoken of his stag trip to the county.

In another astonishing boost for tourism Rudd spoke of the bachelor party in Donegal.

“We had a week in Donegal,” says the Anchorman actor.

Letterman asked why they hadn’t gone to Las Vegas for a party for two friends who were getting married.

“First of all Ireland is the best place on earth,” says Rudd.

He said he wore his Ireland jersey on for the trip with his name on the back and he took it with him on his Donegal trip.

He said that after five pints in a pub in Killybegs he went and got the jersey (with a number 2 on the back) and went back to the pub.

“But everyone there still started teasing me,” he laughed.

And that included Seamus Coleman’s dad who told him: “There’s only one man in this town who wears No2.”

Gardai have smashed a prostitution ring in Letterkenny.

A total of six people appeared in court today charged in connection with the sex ring which was operating at three different flats at Riverside Apartments on Pearse Road.

The accused, who were in their 20s and 30s, are all from Romania.

All were charged with either managing, assisting or acting in the running of a brothel for the purpose of habitual prostitution.

It was revealed in court that Gardai had monitored the apartments at Riverside, Pearse Road for some time.

When they raided the apartments they found a woman in a state of undress and a customer in one of the apartments.

Another of the prostitutes was hiding in a wardrobe.

Detective Sergeant Mick Carroll said all four women had taken out adverts for sexual services on the Escort Ireland website and three phones used on these adverts were seized.

He said the women had been in Ireland for a number of months working as prostitutes.

Three had been sending money home to their families while one of the women had €5, 890 in cash which came from offering her services as a prostitute for the past five months.

Before the court were Andrea Mihaela Hotoleane, aged 28 from 20 Riverside Apartments, Florea Mihaela, aged 34 from 20 Riverside Apartments, Maria Vaduva, aged 21 from 18 Riverside Apartments, Mihaela Niculae, aged 36 from 18 Riverside Apartments.

All were charged with prostitution.

Representing all four women, solicitor Patsy Gallagher said they were all vulnerable ladies whose circumstances had brought them here.

He revealed that two of them had young children at home but had traveled to Ireland to make money so they could send back cash to their families.

Another one of the women was a qualified nurse but the temptation of making a large amount of money brought her to Ireland.

“The fact that €15,000 would build a lovely home back in Romania, a very poor part of the country where they come from, speaks for itself,” said Mr Gallagher.

Florea Mihaela, aged 34, who was charged with prostitution.

Florea Mihaela, aged 34, who was charged with prostitution.

He added that the women were not under huge force from other people when in Ireland and were simply trying to make as much money as possible.

He revealed that with the arrival of the Donegal International Rally into Letterkenny this weekend, they were hoping to be kept very busy.

“Of course the weekend that is in it they were hoping to have a bumper weekend with the rally coming up but they are hoping to get out of town as quickly as possible.”

However, Garda Inspector Goretti Sheridan told the court that the women had been overheard at Letterkenny Garda station saying they would be “back working tonight” if they got out.

Judge Paul Kelly said he was initially unsure what to do with the women in case he did release them and they entered into prostitution again.

“Are they planning to recoup their losses over the weekend,” he asked.

He then asked solicitor Patsy Gallagher if the women were “willing to get out of Dodge?”

Mr Gallagher asked the Judge if there was a time limit on the women’s exit form the country and Judge Kelly replied “the sooner the better.”

After considering the matter for some time, he ordered that €1,200 of the seized cash be divided amongst the women to buy one-way airline tickets back to Romania.

The women held each other’s hands and wept as the Judge gave his direction.

“They are getting a very good deal,” added Judge Kelly.

Two other people, a husband and wife, also appeared before the court on charges of running or assisting in the running of a brothel.

Ionel Bojaoga, 38, and Camelia Ungurianu, aged 35 were in the apartments when they were raided by Gardai.

Detective Niall Boyle said he was objecting to bail as he believed there was a flight risk and that witnesses may be interfered with.

Judge Kelly released Ms Ungurianu on her own bond of €250 but remanded Mr Bogaoga in custody to Harristown Court on Friday next, June 27th.

ATHLETICS: LIFFORD AC ATHLETES IN ACTION FOR IRELAND, ULSTER AND CLUB

This weekend will be yet another busy one for Lifford AC senior and juvenile athletes, with athletes in action from Estonia to Santry to Tullamore.

Lifford athletes including Ann-Marie McGlynn right are in action this weekend.

Lifford athletes including Ann-Marie McGlynn right are in action this weekend.

Following on from her selection to the Irish Cross Country team last year, Lifford AC’s Anne Marie McGlynn’s will be in action in Estonia, representing Ireland at the European Team Championships.

McGlynn will go in the 1500m and has proved herself to now be among Ireland’s leading middle distance athletes. The Strabane athlete deservedly joins a star studded mens and womens team which includes Fionnuala Britton, Kelly Proper, Mark English and Paul Robinson. Everyone at Lifford AC wishes Anne Marie the best of luck this weekend.

On Saturday, 14 year old Brendan O’Donnell will represent Ulster at the Tailteann Games in Santry. The Inter Provincial schools competition is the official trial for selection for the Irish Schools team which will compete against England, Scotland and Wales at the Schools International in Cardiff on the 19th July.

Representing St Eunans College, Letterkenny, O’Donnell is still only a junior competing at intermediate level and has been selected for Ulster based on his recent outstanding hammer throw performances which included gold at the recent All Ireland Schools Championships.

Also on Saturday, five young athletes will make the journey to Tullamore to represent Lifford AC at the All Ireland Childrens Games. In the Under 9 Long Jump and 60m, Ballybofey’s Martin Mbuli and St Johnston lad Joshua McGlinchey will be in action while in the Under 10 boys, Lifford’s Oran Gallagher will partner Harvey Mullen in the 500m and Carrickmore’s Patrick Sweeney in the Long Jump.

These young athletes have already done themselves, their parents and club proud by qualifying for these Championships which will hopefully be the first stepping stones to representation at the All Irelands for years to come. At these young ages, the key to success is enjoyment first and foremost and if medals make their way northwards on Saturday evening, this will be an added bonus to the whole experience.

MINISTER’S RED TAPE WILL EXCLUDE DONEGAL FARMERS FROM NEW GLAS SCHEME – McCONALOGUE

Deputy Charlie McConalogue has told the Dáil that a significant proportion of Donegal farmers will find themselves unable to participate in the new GLAS scheme as a result of the excess of red tape and rules brought in under the new programme.

Charlie McConalogue

Charlie McConalogue

Deputy McConalogue said in order for any one farmer to qualify for GLAS, at least half of all farmers with access to the same commonage lands will also have to join.

This is totally impractical and will mean that in reality most farms with commonage land will be unable to participate in the new scheme.

The new regulations will also prevent many farmers that have commonage rights which they no longer use from applying to join the scheme for the part of their farm which is actively worked.

“There are a total of 14,929 farms in Ireland which include commonage land. This amounts to 11% of all farms. Previous environmental schemes saw 3,610 farms participating in environmental schemes such as Reps and AEOS, that’s only 24% of the total. Based on these numbers, it looks highly unlikely that commonage farmers will be able to achieve the 50% target set to qualify for this new scheme.”

Many family farms are struggling to remain viable in the face of rising operational costs, funding cuts and falling beef and sheep prices.

The average income for a sheep farm last year was €11,160, and for cattle farms it stood at €15,595, well below the average industrial wage. Environmental schemes which require farmers to carry out environmentally friendly works in return for a payment can be crucial to keeping many farm families in business.

“It is absolutely essential that Minister Coveney listens to farmers’ genuine concerns and amends the terms of the new scheme so as to not exclude these farm families,” he added.

THIRTEEN people have lost their jobs following the closure of one of Buncrana’s best-known supermarkets.

Bradley’s EuroSpar in the Dunree Centre has been trading for decades – some of the staff have worked there for 30 years.

“It is just devastating,” said one member of staff.

“We can’t believe it has closed.”

Bradley’s was run by former town councillor Paul Bradley who complained recently about crippling commercial rates.

Staff numbers had been halved in recent years as he battle international supermarket chains.

Buncrana GAA NotesBuncrana gaa logo

Congratulations to our young clubman Darrach O’Connor who played a starring role in Sunday’s semi-final victory over Antrim in Clones. He had just finished his Leaving Cert exams this week and quickly swapped the pressure to get Leaving points to scoring them on the football field. Darrach scored 2 great points from play but capped it all with a wonderful goal that knocked the resistance out of a gallant Antrim. Next up will be either Monaghan or Armagh in Donegal’s fourth Ulster final in a row. Well done Darrach.

Donegal Minors made it a double day’s joy as they cruised past Antrim to reach their first final since 2006. Clubmen John Campbell and Caolan McGonigle played a big part in this great achievement.

Feile na nGael Hurling Div 3A U14 Hurling

The Buncrana team gave a great display of themselves in this prestigious competition reaching the quarter finals against Na Magha. Both teams played an exciting game of hurling and unfortunately the Buncrana lads came off second best in the end.

Buncrana were hosts to Tommy Larkins from Galway who they played in their first game in the Scarvey. The visitors proved too strong on the day for our lads, going in at half time with a good lead, but Buncrana made a game of it in the second half and came off the pitch with heads held high.

Buncrana was the only club in Inishowen to host a team and all the travelling players and their parents were given a tremendous welcome and shown a great time by our club.

Tir Chonaill Gaels Club Notes

Juniors:

The junior team played two league matches over the past week and had mixed fortunes.

Our reserve team keep on grinding out the results in the league after a hard earned win over a good North London Shamrock team last Saturday.

Their were good performances from Kevin Mullan, Fergus Horan, Gary Kane and Barry McDonagh. Final score TCG 3-13 NLS 2-10.

Fixtures:

Gabriel Donohoe RIP:

The club were greatly saddened to hear of the passing by of long serving member and supporter Gabriel Donohoe late last week at Charing Cross hospital.

A native of Teemore in County Fermanagh he had been involved with the club since the late eighties and was influential in getting club stalwart Tommy Maguire to join up.

Although his health had deteriorated over the years it did not stop him travelling to all of our club games no matter what the weather.

He was a quiet gentleman who was very dedicated to the club and Gaa in general, and would be seen most weekends in the pensioner’s dugout at Ruislip.

Tir Chonaill Gaels pass on our condolences to Gabriel’s family both in England and Ireland and we thank him for the memories he has left with us.

Funeral arrangements will be posted on the club website, twitter and Facebook when confirmed. May he rest in Peace.

soccer-ballDrumkeen welcomed Fanad to St Patrick’s Park on Saturday in the USL reserve league on a perfect day for football.

The early minutes were scrappy enough with most of the play in the middle of the park and neither keeper had a save to make.

Fanad should have taken the lead on fifteen minutes when a Conor Blaney free was headed onto the bar and bounced down on the line and Paul Mc Auley was able to deal with it.

Drumkeen took the lead on 20 minutes when Richie Moore finished neatly from ten yards after a pass from Liam McGill out on the right wing.

Dean McCarry then shot wide for Fanad at the other end.

The home team doubled their advantage shortly after….Peter Mc Namee worked hard to win the ball and gave it to Jerome Duffy who scored a lovely goal out wide on the right,Peter McNamee then volleyed home a Liam Mc Giill cross to make it three …Drumkeen then lost Mc Gill through injury to be replaced Kevin Bonner who joined his brothers Paul and Gerard on the pitch and it is believed that it was the first time three brothers have played in a competitive game for Drumkeen.

As the first half drew to a close Peter Mc Namee of Drumkeen and Conor Blaney of Fanad both Had efforts that went wide .,Fanad pulled a goal back right at the start of the second half when Keelan Mc Elwaine lobbed the ball over the advancing paul Mcauley for a lovely goal.Drumkeen killed the game off shortly after when,Peter Mc Namee’s corner was headed back to Richie Moore by Jerome Duffy and Moore made no mistake with the finish to grab his second of the game. Fanad kept at it and had a few efforts through Connor Matthewson who had a long range effort that went wide and Keelan Mc Eleftwaine who headed over the bar with a few minutes left. There were plenty of good young players on both sides and all five goals were of a very high quality.and this game was a good advert for the Ulster senior reserve league.
