Kryszstof Grezegorski

A 20-year-old man has been sent for trial to the Central Criminal Court in Dublin for the murder of popular Letterkenny resident Bogdan Michalkiawicz.

Kryszstof Grezegorski, who is 20, had been remanded in custody charged with the murder Mr Michalkiawicz.

Grezegorski, from 35 Hazelbrook Crescent in Letterkenny, was charged with the murder of the 41-year-old on May 15 last year.

Mr Michalkiawicz was found dead at his Riverside apartment in Letterkenny. He had been last seen alive two days earlier.

Grezegorski stood in court alongside a prison officer and had today’s hearing translated to him.

Detective Sergeant Mick Galvin told Letterkenny District Court that he had served the Book of Evidence on Grezegorski this morning.

Sgt Galvin told the court that there were two volumes in the book of evidence and the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed the murder trial be held at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

Judge Paul Kelly told the Polish national that if he intended to provide an alibi in the case, he must provide this to the prosecution within 14 days.

The case was put back until June 30.

Defence solicitor Patsy Gallagher said he understood the case would go ahead in November and that the case may be heard alongside that of a second man also charged in connection with the murder.

Legal aid for two counsel was approved. Grezegorski was remanded in custody.

For the Girls – Functional Fitness on Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 12pm-1pm (€5)

This class has been designed with the younger lady in mind.

With so much focus by the media on aesthetics of the female form & many magazines boasting skinny un-healthy girls on the covers, Fit-Hub endeavours to help teach girls a healthy & sustainable approach to training & nutrition.

Many young women are very body conscious & lack the security that some of us more mature ladies may possess & learning healthy nutritional principles coupled with proper training will only seek to reinforce some self-confidence.

Not all young women are the same & neither should their training or eating habits & for that reason we have some of the finest coaches on offer that are well versed in youth training that can devise classes to suit all ages, shapes, sizes, abilities & fitness levels.

This class will be launched on Monday 23rd of June @ 12pm & will run throughout the summer so they can join at any time & when schools reconvene in September there will be an after school option on offer to keep them on track.

For the Guys (& the Girls) – Weightlifting for Strength, Power & Speed Tuesday & Thursday from 1-2pm (€7)

These sessions are programmed with the aspiring athlete and/or weightlifter in mind. There is so much conflicting information circulating pertaining to the safety of weightlifting for young people, much of which is fuelled by misinformation & fear of injury.

However, when the fundamentals of weight bearing exercise are learned in a safe & effective environment, the potential benefits to life & sporting performance are limitless.

Fit-hub boasts some of the industries finest performance coaches, strength & conditioning coaches & performance nutritionists, many of whom are already working with local elite athletes & teams. The opportunity for young people/athletes to work with these coaches will be hugely beneficial & rewarding both on & off the field.

McMenamin didn’t even issue an apology in court

SICK friends of a thug who attacked a defenceless couple in a food outlet have issued threats against their supporters.

Trolls took to Facebook to defend thug Cillian McMenamin after he was jailed for a year for an outrageous attack on a couple in Dungloe.

McMenamin lashed out at Patrick McKelvey and his wife Sharon as they stopped for something to eat after work in the town in April last year.

They both suffered severe injuries when Mr McKelvey objected to racist abuse being dished out to staff at the Midnight Express outlet.

McMenamin didn’t apologise in court for his behaviour.

And when local people rallied around the McKelveys to give them support in the wake of McMenamin’s conviction, they faced dire abuse – and threats – from his supporters.

“Disapproval of his behavior on the night of the attack on the McKelvey couple as expressed in Facebook comments by local outraged people were answered by Cillian’s support group who wanted to claim that his behaviour could be explained entirely in terms of his addiction problems and lack of experience, in such a way as to convince them of their lack of compassion and understanding,” said one local woman.

“This argument forced them to withdraw their comments. I received a private message informing me of my own family’s shortcomings, and urging me to reconsider my comments, in the light of my own shortcomings, and those of my family.

“It is interesting that Cillian’s support group actually have the power to silence the people who want to publicly disapprove of what he did to the McKelveys, perhaps in the vain hope that if similar attacks happen again in the town, it will be blamed on a misunderstanding of racial points of view, inexperience, and the power of addiction.”

Another supporter of the McKelveys told us: “I was also threatened to withdraw comments in their support. It was just incredible.

“These people are blinded to what happened; it was all ok for them that something like this could happen. It would fit them better to apologise instead of making excuses for this moron.”

McMenamin was jailed for a year by Judge Paul Kelly who described the incident as outrageous.

The crew of the Derry Clipper celebrate their homecoming with the city’s Mayor Brenda Stevenson.

The Donegal skipper of the victorious Derry “LondonDerry” Doire yacht was given a hero’s welcome when the boat sailed into its home port this morning.

The previous day, Sean McCarter, from Buncrana, steered the Derry entry to victory in the 14th race (from New York) of the round the world challenge.

Several thousand people lined the quayside on the River Foyle to welcome the Derry Clipper home.

The yacht was accompanied by a flotilla of around 20 boats,  including the Lough Swilly Lifeboat from skipper McCarter’s home town.

Several thousand cheered and waved as the yacht docked to the sound of fireworks and “Danny Boy” and “The Town I Love So Well,” performed by the combined local church choirs.

Buncrana man Sean McCarter, skipper of the Derry Clipper, is welcomed home by city Mayor Brenda Stevenson,

Mayor of Derry, Cllr Brenda Stevenson, was on hand to “pop” the champagne and cases of Guinness were “at the ready” for the crew which had been “dry” since leaving New York just over two weeks ago.

Speaking before coming ashore, Sean McCarter said he was “overwhelmed” by the welcome.

He said: “After almost 40,000 miles it’s unbelievable to be sailing into Derry and even more so in first place.

“We have had several boats come out to meet us at six o’clock this morning and the flotilla has been growing ever since.”

He added: “We always knew it was going to be something special, but this is more than we expected.”

The yacht’s arrival in Derry saw an emotional one for Andrew Taylor, the crew member who fell overboard in the North Pacific.

Andrew, who was swept away from the yacht by high winds, was rescued after spending around 90 minutes in the water.

His family were on Derry’s quayside yesterday to meet him for the first time since the dramatic incident.

He said: “I’m fit and healthy. This is a big moment for me. I have spoken to my family over the phone but I have not seen them for months.”

“It certainly has been very emotional day,” he said.

“To receive such a great welcome in Derry is amazing, but to have mum and dad here as well makes it all the more special.”

Ten more years: Highland Radio managing director Shaun Doherty.

BREAKING NEWS: HIGHLAND Radio is to stay on air for another decade after winning its Broadcasting License for north Donegal despite a rival consortium bid headed by its former station manager.

It follows a ruling from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland after an expensive bidding process.

Former Highland stalwart Charlie Collins had led a consortium hoping to launch DLFM.

Both sides in the bidding war had submitted lengthy applications for the license.

A full public hearing was also held at a Letterkenny hotel with both Charlie Collins and Highland Radio’s managing director Shaun Doherty making passionate presentations on why they should win the 10-year license.

A large crowd had heard both Highland Radio and DLFM present the reasons why they both thought they should win the radio license for the North Donegal area.

Today the BAI Contract Awards Committee voted by a majority to let Highland stay on air.

Lynch was doing stunts o a child’s bike at 4.20am!

Darren Lynch, 24, was spotted by Gardai on a road at Grahamsland, Castlefin on June 2nd, 2013.

Gardai revealed that Lynch was drunk and was doing skids in the middle of the road on the child’s bike.

When told by Gardai to get off the road, Lynch became argumentative and also initially gave a false name.

He was eventually arrested.

Lynch, of 56 Lawnsdale, Ballybofey, appeared before Letterkenny District Court today.

Judge Paul Kelly asked Lynch how would he feel if a car was coming on the road and hit a person riding a child’s bike in the middle of the road at 4.20am?

“I would feel very bad. I’m sorry. I just had too much to drink but I don’t drink that often,” said Lynch.

Judge Kelly replied “It’s something you should do a lot less of.”

Judge Kelly ordered Lynch to pay €100 to Donegal Youth Services by next September.

If he did so, Judge Kelly said he would not record a conviction against Lynch.

HSE SUSPENDS CONTROVERSIAL REVIEW OF DONEGAL MATERNITY SERVICES

Letterkenny HospitalA CONTROVERSIAL review of maternity services at Letterkenny General Hospital has been suspended.

There had been fears the hospital could lose the services.

But the HSE said today that the The West/North West Hospitals Group has decided to suspend the public and stakeholder engagement processes of its review of maternity services and to subsume its efforts into the national review of maternity services.

The Department of Health, the HSE and all staff concerned are being informed of this decision through the normal communications channels, said the HSE.

Mr Bill Maher, Group CEO of the West/North West Hospitals Group, stated: “It was our intention from the outset that our review of the models of care would feed into the national review of maternity services, which will be led by the Department of Health with input from the HSE.

“We have advised the Department of Health and the HSE that our Group will assist the national maternity review in whatever way we can.

“We will, of course, continue to implement the recommendations of the HIQA and other reviews where possible and considerable progress has been made in this regard.

“A new Group Director of Midwifery Services will take up her appointment shortly and this is a further demonstration of the Group’s commitment to ensuring that all women accessing our maternity services receive best care from the most appropriate professional in the most appropriate setting.”

DISAPPOINTED RADIO CONSORTIUM BOSS WISHES HIGHLAND WELL

radioThe Chairman of DLFM, Paddy Simpson expressed his disappointment at the decision of the BAI to award Highland Radio the broadcasting contract for North Donegal.

“I and my fellow shareholders in DLFM are very disappointed with today’s decision by the BAI. DLFM put forward very strong proposals for a world class radio station which would have served the people of Donegal very well,” said Mr Simpson.

“Our proposals were very inclusive of all the communities in Donegal and would have seen a new studio in Carndonagh as well as a studio in Letterkenny. We had exciting plans for new programme formats and new voices which regrettably will not now be brought to air.

“I want to thank the DLFM team for their hard work and commitment and while equally disappointed, I know they will join with me in congratulating Highland Radio and wishing the station continued success.”

DLFM was led by a consortium of experienced and successful Donegal business people. In addition to Paddy Simpson and Charlie Collins, shareholders in DLFM included Philip O’Doherty of E&I Engineering, Letterkenny businessmen Enda Nicholls of Arena 7 and Mark McCloskey of Evolve Menswear as well as Glenties man Brian McGill of the Harcourt Hotel; the Falcarragh-born publican Danny Doohan; former Mayor of Letterkenny and digital media expert Damien Blake and his wife Mary G. Blake, a teacher from Ballybofey.

EMMET RUSHE’S FITNESS COLUMN: TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE

$

emmet rushe“Naked” Juice has been in the news recently as they have settled a lawsuit taken against them for $9 million dollars.

The website for the settlement, NakedJuiceClass.com, explains that the lawsuit took issue with Naked Juice’s use of phrases like “100% Juice,” “100% Fruit,” “From Concentrate,” “All Natural,” “All Natural Fruit,” “All Natural Fruit + Boosts” and “Non-GMO.

“The lawsuit claims that the [Naked Juice products] contain ingredients that are not “All Natural” and contain GMOs (or Genetically Modified Organisms),” reads the site.

Some products are made with genetically altered soy, the lawsuit alleges.

Are you surprised?

Their parent company is actually PepsiCo and they have refuted the claims made by the lawsuit, but they still paid out $9 million in a settlement. Why pay out if they could have substantiated their claims?

The thing is, ‘Naked Juice’ is not the first company to have been sued for falsely claiming that their products do more than they actually do.

‘Activia yogurt’ was sued in 2010 for their ‘health’ claims about their product, it was found that their yogurt was no different to any other yogurts and it cost the company $45 million dollars.

In 2011 ‘Reebok’ agreed to a $25 million settlement over their advertisement for their ‘Easytone’ and ‘RunTone’ products that promised to tone your legs and butt.

In 2013 ‘Sketchers’ were sued to the sum of $45 million for unfounded claims that their “Shape-Ups” could help people lose weight and strengthen and tone their buttocks, legs and abdominal muscles.

Just recently the weird looking, but hugely popular ‘Vibram 5 fingered shoes,’ (they look like feet) paid out $3.75 million for false claims of health benefits of their shoes.

What does this tell us?

Do you still think that such companies have your best interests at heart?

Or are we so easily swayed by great marketing that we blindly buy products based on buzzwords and catchy advertisements?

If you were one of the 70 million people who bought a pair of the $100 ‘Vibram’ shoes, you could be left with a sour taste in your mouth.

But does the company regret their costly advertisement claims?

I highly doubt it; after all they made over $700 million from their product and were only hit with $3.75 million of a law suit.

I can’t be sure, but I think they will be just fine after that.

The media has a huge influence on how we spend our money.

You may have noticed that if you ‘like’ a page on Facebook, you will get a suggestion list that pops up with pages of similar interest to the one you have liked.

What will also have happened with the page-like, is the advertisements that appear in the side bar will be for products that resemble what Facebook sees as your interests.

Social media is the fastest way for companies to gather information on what you like and do not like.

They can advertise directly to you and your interests at a fraction of the cost, instantaneously.

Companies glean information from social media sites and we freely give over all of our information without even knowing it.

Companies will always give fantastical claims for their products.

It allows them to generate huge amounts of income in short periods of time and when (eventually) they get drawn over the coals over their false claims, the punishment is usually only a fraction of the profits they have made.

When it comes to choosing products wisely in the health and fitness world, the best advice I can give you is this;

If it sounds too good to be true……..etc.

Aodh Ruadh GAA Notes

Club meeting  Aodh Ruadh

The monthly club executive meeting takes place this Thursday, 26th June in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh at 8.30pm.

All committee members are asked to attend.

Football
Aodh Ruadh maintained their position at the head of the division three table with a 2-22 to 0-10 victory over a depleted Carndonagh side in Inishowen. Ballyshannon were slow to start and Carn were picking off some lovely long range points, but the visitors were able to forge their way to a 0-9 to 0-5 half time lead. Aodh Ruadh’s first goal was a fine individual effort, Mickey Dolan attacking down the left channel and unleashing a rasper past the Carndonagh net minder. The second goal came when Ballyshannon turned over a Carn attack and the ball was worked to Diarmaid McInerney in space. McInerney was clinical with his finish to the back of the net. In general it was good team performance from the Ernesiders, especially in the second period when fatigue began to tell on the homesters. Conor Patton once again clocked up the kilometers in another indefatigable performance, while Eamonn McGrath led what was an impressive half back display. Also prominent was James O’Donnell who dominated around the centre of the field. We have some pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Aodh Ruadh are on the road once next weekend, this time to the next peninsula over. The seniors will be taking on Milford on Saturday evening at 7.30pm. That game will be preceded by the reserves at 6pm.

The under 16s opened their season with a two point away loss to Four Master on a 3-10 to 3-8 scoreline in the league. Aodh Ruadh took their time to get into the game went in at the break four points down, 1-7 to 1-3. However after a few positional shifts the visitors got on top of things in the second half and the result could easily have swung in Ballyshannon’s favour had a few shots been smiled upon by fortune. Oisín Rooney capped a great attacking performance with a well converted goal, while Ryan McKenna nailed a penalty. Aodh Ruadh’s joint captains Nathan Boyle and Shane McGrath both excelled, Boyle in particular took a few heavy knocks, but never stepped back. In defence Jason Granaghan and Conall Sweeny both did very well. A quick story to finish on a light note, an Aodh Ruadh player was pulled down while on the attack. A Ballyshannon supporter called out it was a black card, to which a tablet-toting Four Masters mentor responded, “How was that a black card?” The Aodh Ruadh man shot back, “How about you look it up on your iPad!” Anyway, the under 16s will be back in action this Friday in Father Tierney Park when they host Ardara. That game throws up at 7.30pm.

The under 14s championship hopes came to a very disappointing end last Wednesday night in Ballintra, when they met Four Masters in their championship play-off game. From the very start the lads struggled to find form against a very fit and determined Four Masters side and the absence of a few key players up front really made an impact on the outcome of the game. Half-time saw the Aodh Ruadh lads trailing by two points. Donegal made the better start in the second half and pulled away at a steady pace. With the best efforts of Dylan Gallagher, Odhran McGarrigle and man of the match Senan Rooney all finding the back of the Donegal net in the second half it still was not enough and the Four Masters men finished the game very strong, running out the easy 6-14 to 3-7 winners at the final whistle.

Our under 12s will be hosting Ardara on Tuesday 24th June with the senior game throwing in at 6.30pm. Training on Saturday at 10.45am.

Under 10 training continues on Wednesday at 6.30pm and Saturday at 11pm.

The under 8s traveled to Ardara last Saturday for a blitz also featuring Naomh Bríd. It was an enjoyable day out for the team that travelled down with some good football played too. In the senior game Jack McCadden played brilliantly at full back, with Barry Campbell in goals and later had a great game up front. In the junior game, Liam Doogan worked well at midfield and Hugh Óg Maguire up front scoring a great point stood out. The team who represented Ballyshannon were: Killian Bradshaw, Barry Campbell, Liam Doogan, Stephen Doran, Tommy Clyne, Cormac Finnegan, Donagh Kelly, Hugh Óg Maguire, Seán Maguire, Jack McCadden, Cian McDonald, Garvey Meade, Tom Murphy, Conor O’Mahoney, Dara O’Mahoney, Cillian Slevin and James Ward. Training at the usual time of 6.30pm this Friday.

Under 6 training continues this Friday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh at 6.30pm.

Double joy for Donegal
Sunday proved a great day as Donegal as seniors and minors booked their places in the biggest day in the Ulster GAA calendar. There was a lot of club interest in Clones on with Niall Harley and Colm Kelly figuring prominently in the minors 2-19 to 1-10 victory over Antrim. Mick McGrath is involved in the minor back room team, while Aodh Ruadh hurler Jamie Brennan is going well. too. The Aodh Ruadh interest didn’t stop there as Anthony Donagher and John Joe Gettins both took part in the half time games, giving a good account of themselves. Ronan Matthews was in Clones on Sunday and he got a great range of shots from the day which can be browsed at aodhruadh.org.

Hurling
Aodh Ruadh recorded another good win in Ulster Táin league division three on Sunday evening. They defeated Louth outfit Mattock Rangers on a scoreline of 5-11 to 3-10 to third in the ten team table behind Ballela of Down and Sean Treacy’s from Lurgan. Ballyshannon got off to a flyer with two earlier goals, Chris Kilgannon instrumental in both, and enjoyed a half time cushion of five points. However Mattock contribute a sizeable contingent to the Louth senior team and weren’t for lying down. Two goals after the break saw the Leinster men edge into a one point lead. Aodh Ruadh responded well and battled back to run out seven point winners. The most encouraging aspect of the performance was the grit shown by the youthful Aodh Ruadh full back line of Tommy Anderson, Tommy Gillespie and Jack Matthews who were under huge pressure in the second half.

The under 16s open their league campaign with a home game against MacCumhaill’s on Thursday evening. Throw in at Father Tierney Park is at 7 pm and all support will be most welcome.
Best of luck to Brendan Gillespie and Oisín Rooney as they attend the Ulster Academy in Jordanstown next Monday and Tuesday, it’s a great honour for the lads and a well deserved reward for their years of dedication to hurling.
Our under 8s and under 10s take part in the third all county blitz this Sunday in Convoy, details will be sent out during the week.

Ladies
Aodh Ruadh said farewell to Fionnuala Gill at the weekend. The Gaelscoil Éirne teacher has made a great contribution to the club since coming to the town almost a decade ago. She soldiered with the senior team, winning an intermediate championship title, and helped coach a number of underage Aodh Ruadh teams too. The ladies team staged a farewell bash for Fionnuala in Dicey Reilly’s where she was presented with a few mementos to remember us by when she gets settled in down in Cork. Always available to lend a hand, it’s fair to say we’ll all miss the Mayo múinteoir about the place. Slán agus go raibh céad maith agat. We have a few pictures from the presentation up on aodhruadh.org.

Our under 8s, under 10s and under 12s continue to train on Mondays at 6pm. Best of luck to the under 12s who travel to Mountcharles this Saturday 28th for a blitz. The following Saturday 5th July they will be playing at a blitz in Donegal Town.

Hard luck to the under 14s who lost their play-off game against Termon last Tuesday in Killygordon. The girls had a great year, topping their group in the first round and finishing up in a play-off situation in Division A in the county.

Training continues for under 16s, minors and seniors on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm.

Summer camp
Aodh Ruadh Summer Camp 2014 runs on Monday 7th July-11th July and Monday 14th July-18th July. The camp runs from 10am to 3pm daily.

Donegal supports safe driving
The County Health and Wellbeing Committee of CLG Dhún na nGall and the Donegal Road Safety Working Group have launched a campaign to encourage all road users to change their behavior and make these changes part of their lives in the future, which will save lives and reduce serious injuries on our roads.
Our message is simple – make smart choices about how you use the roads: never ever drink or drug drive, strictly keep to the speed limits and reduce your speed, make sure you and your passengers are wearing seatbelts before you set off on a journey, no matter how short and never use your mobile phone for any purpose while driving.
The campaign is fully backed by Donegal GAA and Donegal Road Safety Working Group with Donegal senior team player, Ryan McHugh as its Ambassador. Footballers and management will be encouraging people to make their pledge to decide every time they sit in a vehicle before they turn the key, that they will make smart choices about how they use the roads. The hope is that everyone takes note and thinks road safety when using the roads.
This Road Safety campaign for the football season is being co-ordinated by Brian O’Donnell, Road Safety Officer, Donegal County Council and Sean Dunnion, County Chairman, Donegal GAA as part of their road safety education and casualty reduction strategy.
At the launch at MacCumhaill Park on Saturday June 7th, Brian O’Donnell, Road Safety Officer opened by saying, “This is another opportunity to remind football fans about their road safety responsibilities. Fans should ensure the enjoyment of the game isn’t followed by tragedy on the roads. Individuals and organisations should follow their football team’s example and make a commitment to support this campaign and ask all their family members to adhere to the rules of the road at all times and lead by example. It is also important to factor in a rest break on your journey from Donegal to the game”.
Sean Dunnion, County Chairman said, “The new County Health and Wellbeing Committee formed earlier this year immediately identified that Road Safety should be a focus area for their plan for 2014 so we are delighted now to partner with the Donegal Road Safety Working Group in delivering a campaign for our members and supporters as they travel to venues across Ulster and indeed hopefully outside the province later in the season as they support the Donegal minor and senior football teams.”
Ryan McHugh said, “It was a great honour for him to be selected as the Donegal GAA Road Safety Ambassador and looked forward to working with both the County Health and Wellbeing Committee and the Donegal Road Safety Working Group in promoting a safe driving culture for both young and older drivers. He also appealed to everybody, both drivers and passengers, to heed the many safe driving messages that will be delivered particularly over social media channels in the coming months.”
