Shane Wallace of Wallace Media with presenter Andrea Gilligan.

The MHz Networks in the United States has confirmed that the first of its three television programmes on Donegal will be aired on Saturday 28th June at 5pm EST (10pm Irish time).

The programme will have features on the World Affairs HONORS – Gala in Washington, NI Bureau – DC breakfast event and MHz Networks Founder and CEO Fred Thomas gives an exclusive interview where he talks of his delight at having professional Donegal programmes featured on his national TV network.

The programme will also include features on Sliabh Liag, Fanad Head, Inch Levels, Malin Head with additional pieces on the Grianan Festival, Donegal Marathon and the Diaspora Conferences recently held in the Letterkenny Institute of Technology.Donegal TV Mac Logo [1]

The programmes will be screened on Todays IRELAND – TV which is part of MHz’s national Worldview Channel which is available in 38 million American households across the USA.

“It took 40 years for Ireland to establish professional daily television programming in the United States. The steadily growing success of Today’s Ireland provides important lessons to EU nations and other countries who are seeking to harness the power of television to cost efficiently access the US TV market place.

“It provides a great platform for Donegal to connect with government and business influencers, internationally minded Americans and the Irish diaspora across America” said Mr. Tony Culley Foster UK and Ireland Representative of MHz Networks.

And the former Donegal resident added “Today’s IRELAND is now an established global content provider of MHz Networks, an independent, non-commercial and public service television broadcaster delivering international educational programming and providing diverse cultural perspectives for a globally minded audience. Today’s IRELAND TV – USA is anchored by RTE, TV3, TG4,Irish Film Board, NvTv, Belfast Community Television, NI Screen & Donegal TV and connects American viewers with contemporary Ireland through a blend of news, current affairs, politics, economy, business, education, tourism, culture, drama, sports and entertainment.”

Shane Wallace Founder and Director of Donegal TV & Wallace Media International who produced the 3 programmes on Donegal said it was very encouraging to receive international recognition.

“Mhz only air programmes of the highest quality so it is pleasing that they have accepted our features and indeed have been very complementary about our shows on Donegal. When I filmed recently in the States many of the show participants had already visited Ireland and our county and are enthusiastic ambassadors for tourism in Donegal. Our programmes will promote the county and NW of Ireland to a very wide audience throughout the USA”.

Paul McLoone, who assisted in the production of the features said that from a tourism perspective it was great news for Donegal.

“I was working in tourism for many years and was only too well aware of the difficulties of getting the proper international platform to promote Donegal as we always felt we were fighting an uphill battle with the distribution stakeholders.

“We were aware that if we made interesting programmes of the highest quality that an opportunity for US broadcast would arise so we are delighted that MHz will showcase Donegal to such a huge American audience”.

The second show will be screened on July 5th at 5pm EDT and will include highlights from former President Bill Clinton’s recent visit to Derry and will have interviews with two very successful Donegal people in the States; NYPD Chief Kevin Ward and jazz singer Tara O’Grady. In addition there is a special report on the ‘Donegal is Happy’ video which was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show throughout the US and a short feature from the British – Irish Assembly meeting in Dublin.

American viewers who also watch Donegal TVs content online via www.donegaltv.ie & www.facebook.com/DonegalTV were fascinated by Donegal TVs recent local elections coverage and as a consequence Show # 3 will be a Donegal Election Special from all of Donegals local constituencies and the European Constituency of Midlands North West. This show will also be aired on MHz’s Today’s IRELAND on July 5th at 5.30pm for information in how to receive MHz Todays Ireland in America visit www.todaysireland.tv the Programmes is also available on visit www.donegaltv.ie & www.facebook.com/donegaltv

UNDERAGE FOOTBALL

He U8 team travelled to Muff on Monday of last week for the last of their blitz encounters. They can now look forward to their finals day on the 27th July for boys and 28th July for the girls, both in Malin.

U6 players of the week this week were Andrew Lyle and Jade Harkin. U8 players of the week were Natasha Doherty and Eamon McDaid.

Under 8 training now takes place every Saturday from 10-11am. If there are any parents or members of the community willing to get involved in coaching or helping in the club in any way, could they please get in contact with Mags Mulhall.

The following children were selected to represent the North Inishowen primary school team who played south Inishowen in Carndonagh on Sunday 8th June.

The girls are as follows: Breena Diver, Erin Coyke, Aoibh Faulkner, Clodagh Skelly, Niamh Skelly, Kerry Mc Laughlin, Niamh Mc Laughlin, Niamh Mc Donald, Claire Mc Laughlin, Kirsty Connolly & Kate Mc Clenaghan The boys are as follows: Eoin O Doherty, CJ Mc Crudden, Michael Leech, Oran Mc Guinness, Shaun Mc Donald, Brennan Moore & Conor Mc Laughlin. Well done to all the children involved.

U16 BOYS

The U16 boys had to dig deep to come from behind to beat a tough Carn team on Friday night in the Inishowen A semi final.

Carn started the brighter and had a goal and a point on the board before Moville got their first score from Paddy Faulkner.

A goal from Jack Banks after a 45 had dropped short had Moville back on level terms after 20 minutes however despite some great fielding by Mark Browne their lethargic start continued for the remainder of the half as Carn led 1-4 to 1-2 at half time.

Both teams scored 2 points apiece at the start of the second half before Moville clawed themselves level with points from Paddy Faulkner and young Eoghan Gillen who had advanced from the backline.

With the game level, and the tackles coming in thick and fast from both teams, the turning point came when Cathal McLaughlin scored a goal at the 2nd attempt after his first effort had been well saved by the Carn keeper.

Moville added another point from Paddy Faulkner before Carn replied with a goal of their own to leave a point in it with 3 minutes to go.

Moville also lost their goalkeeper Ciaran Bonner to injury which added to the blow as he was enjoying a commanding game in goals.

However not for the first time this season, the boys dug deep in the last few minutes and added an insurance point from the impressive Browne.

While this win maintains the boys 100% record for the season, they will know that this was far from their best performance and a massive improvement will be required to beat a highly impressive Muff team in the final.

U14 GIRLS

The U14 girls will contest the county semi-final on Tuesday 24th June at 7.30pm in Carrick Field. The club would like to wish them the best of luck and encourage as many members as possible to come along and support. Remember, nothing beats being there!

SENIOR MEN

The Senior Men have been having a good run of form of late, but unfortunately there was no match last weekend, as Na Rosa did not field. Below is a match report from the very tight Naomh Ultan game from the weekend before.

Moville 2-07 Naomh Ultan 2-06

Moville and Naomh Ultan were neck and neck in fourth and third place respectively in Division four with only a point between them. Naomh Ultan wanted the two points to keep in touch with Letterkenny Gaels and Convoy, Moville wanted the victory to move up to third in the league. On a fine night for football, Moville had the brighter star with points from Nigel McMonagle and Sean O’Hare in the 5th and 6th minutes. Nigel provided excellent build up play before laying the ball off to Joshua Lafferty who raised the green flag with a well taken goal in the 11th minute. Naomh Ultan got a score on the board two minutes later with their first point. Enda Faulkner made an excellent run from his own half to the opponents’ goal and has his shot blocked by an excellent save from the Naomh Ultan keeper only for Lafferty to grab his second goal from the rebound. Naomh Ultan scored another point from a free; followed by points from Dannt Murphy and Ciaran Diver for Moville in quick succession. A mix up in the Moville defence led to an easy goal for Naomh Ultan on the stroke of half time, leaving the score 2-05 to 1-02.

The second half started with much of the play in the middle of the field and few chances for either team, with Naomh Ultan breaking the stalemate in the 10th minute with a point, then another on the 12th to close the gap. Sean O’Hare scored another point from a free in the 16th minute, and Naomh Ultan got another point a minute later. There was a quiet spell in terms of scoring and again Naomh Ultan came out of this with a point and a goal in quick succession to draw level in the 26th minute. It was the cool head of Sean O’Hare who slotted over a free in the 31st minute to take the game for the home side.

Moville: 1. Oran McDermott; 2. Shaun Diver; 3. Enda Faulkner; 4. Declan Logue; 5. Jack Keys; 6. Michael Brown; 7. Ciaran Diver (0-01); 8. John McGeady; 9. Malachy McDermott; 10. Danny Murphy (0-01); 11. Sean O’Hare (0-03, 2f); 12. Maurice Harkin; 13. Seamus Hegarty; 14. Nigel McMonagle (0-01); 15. Joshua Lafferty (2-01)

Unfortunately the Senior Reserves were unable to overcome Naomh Ultan reserves, having been defeated by a score of 2-07 to 3-11.

Training this week on Wednesday and Friday at 6.30

CONGRATULATIONS

Well done to both Donegal Senior and Minor teams who now through to this year’s Ulster Final. Well done to our club players Tony Mc Cleneghan and Ciaran Diver who are part of the minor squad. We will not know until after the Monaghan vs Armagh game this Saturday who we meet but regardless it’s going to be a wonderful occasion to have both our minors and seniors in an Ulster Final.
Hard luck to the Donegal Senior Ladies team who lost out to Armagh on Sunday. Well done to Niamh Hegarty and Sarah-Jane Mc Donald who were part of the team and to the team manager Davy Mc Laughlin who had put in a huge effort since taking over the team. The U14s returned to action on Thursday evening with a comprehensive victory at home to Glenfin. The sides were meeting in the Semi-Final of the Shield competition and the home team signalled their intent from the offset scoring from the very first play of the game, a high ball into the square from Ryan Toye was met by Rory O’Donnell who made no mistake to o…pen the scoring. O’Donnell was on hand again to get Na Galloglaigh’s first goal, after good build up play from the Moyle men O’Donnell fired the ball past the Glenfin goalkeeper. Further points were added by James Moore, Niall Trarty and Ryan Toye as the home side dominated the first half. CLG BnaG got their second goal after a low powerful strike ended up nestled in the bottom corner. Glenfin did register a number of fine scores however they struggled to find their feet as they went in at half time trailing Milford 2-12 to 3 points. TOP COP RESIGNED FROM PROBE INTO DONEGAL MAN’S MURDER INVESTIGATION AFTER LACK OF GARDA CO-OPERATION

A senior Garda officer brought in to examine the Garda investigation of murdered Donegal man Seamus Doherty, later resigned from the probe because of a lack of co-operation by Donegal Gardai.

The late Seamus Doherty.

The late Seamus Doherty.

The high-ranking officer from Co Leitrim was appointed to carry out an internal investigation into the handling of the death of the well-known Churchill man.

Mr Doherty, 67, was found dead in the bathroom of his home on June 17th, 2012 after a violent struggle.

However the father-of-four’s death was not declared a murder until almost three days later.

Although people have been quizzed about his death, nobody has yet been charged with his murder.

Mr Doherty’s death was raised in the Dail this afternoon by Sinn Fein Justice spokesman Padraig MacLochlainn.

The Doherty family has continually expressed serious concerns about the Garda investigation into the death.

Now Deputy MacLochlainn has put down a Dail question on the matter.

Minister Frances Fitzgerald has said Gardai will co-operate with the GSOC investigation.

Deputy MacLochlainn says the Co Donegal family deserve answers and a proper investigation.

“The victim’s family are seeking justice for their late father, a murder victim, after all justice delayed is justice denied. This family have now waited over one year and 7 months for a GSOC investigation, with no end in sight”.

Deputy MacLochlainn’s question asks the Minister for Justice and Equality if she is aware of the lack of cooperation by the Management level of the Donegal division of An Garda Síochána with a Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (“GSOC”) investigation relating to the murder of Mr Doherty.

The victim’s family made complaints at a local level to An Garda Síochána and additionally lodged a complaint to GSOC on the 5th November 2012, regarding aspects of the case and their treatment by An Garda Síochána.

The GSOC investigation was initially investigated in accordance with Section 94(5) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005, that is a supervised investigation.

However GSOC changed the investigation to an investigation in accordance with Section 95 of the Act.

Deputy MacLochalinn said “It must be highlighted, that the investigation was changed as a result of the lack of cooperation of the management of the Donegal division of An Garda Síochána, which was confirmed in writing to the victim’s family in July 2013.”

Despite the fact the complaint was made on the 5th November 2012, to date the GSOC investigation has not been completed nor has the murder investigation.

In the circumstances, there must be answers and accountability regarding why the management division of Donegal division of An Garda Síochána did not cooperate with the GSOC investigation, he adds.

That is, GSOC a statutory body, created as a result of the Morris Tribunal, which as we know emanated in Co. Donegal as aconsequence of allegations of corruption within An Garda Síochána.

It was stated that the victim’s family have made representations regarding the murder to the current Minister’s predecessor Minister Shatter and the former Garda Commissioner Callinan in 2012 and 2013.

Donegal Daily understands the man is Enda McLaughlin, a 27 year old from Carndonagh.

McLaughlin, from Glentogher, recently appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court, when he was found not guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

He had a string of previous convictions.

McLaughlin had been in jail in Co Cork in recent weeks but had then moved to mainland Euope.

One of his victims in the stabbing spree, a taxi driver aged in his 50s, is in a serious condition in hospital.

McLaughlin hailed a cab in Holland and asked to be driven over the border to Germany, where he stabbed the taxi driver in the city of Aachen.

Shortly afterwards, he stabbed another man, before hailing a taxi and asking to be taken to Cologne.

The taxi driver managed to get the man to leave his taxi, which he did on a lay-by, where he stabbed a Lithuanian truck driver before running onto the motorway, where he was hit by a truck and killed.

Gardaí have confirmed they are liaising with German authorities after the death of an Irish national in Cologne.

However we have been told by local sources that Gardai informed McLaughlin’s relatives of his death earlier today.

His mother was killed in a tragic fire at her home.

Gardai have confirmed they were notified of the man’s death yesterday by Interpol but have not named the man officially.

The Department of Foreign Affairs are also offering assistance to the man’s family.

Baxters 1867 invite-finalA beer in memory of an American Civil War hero who hailed from Milford is to be launched in the same Co Donegal town.

The Traveller’s Inn, Milford has launched the new house beer, which will be known as ‘Baxters 1867’.

Owner Michael McBride commissioned the craft beer in honour of the Baxter family, whose roots to the building go back to 1867.

Brewed by Kinnegar Brewing, ‘Baxters 1867’ is a crisp and refreshing pale ale.

The beer is based on an American pale ale style in recognition of Samuel Alexander Baxter, who fought with the North in the American Civil War.

Commenting on the launch, Michael McBride says the history of the Baxter family goes back a long way.

‘I’ve been interested in the history of the building for quite some time and have often heard references relating to the Baxter family like the phrase ‘there’s still a light in Baxter’s’. Or the warning that was issued to many a misbehaving student, who was told they would ‘only be good for holding up Baxter’s Corner’.

“I was intrigued by the family’s story, particularly when I discovered the connection to the American Civil War. I asked Rick LeVert from Kinnegar Brewing to create a craft beer inspired by the Baxter legacy and I’m delighted with the result.’

Rick LeVert, Kinnegar Brewing says they loved working with Michael on this project.

“Kinnegar Brewing is all about finely crafted, all natural farmhouse beers. Collaborations with like-minded, local businesses like Michael’s are a natural fit for us and a great way to experiment with new recipes and flavours. The added bonus is that customers get to experience more variety, enjoying craft beer at its best.’

The launch of ‘Baxters 1867’ is a summer event not to be missed.

‘Baxters 1867’ is exclusive to The Traveller’s Inn and will officially launch with a summer barbecue on Friday, 27th June at 7.00pm. All are welcome to come along, sample the beer and enjoy live music from The Brambles and DJ Paul McGlynn.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESThere was great celebration and excitement at Scoil an Choimín, Glenfinn when singer song-writer and Voice of Ireland star, Paddy Molloy raised the second Green Flag at the school.

Pupils, teachers, staff, parents and friends came together at the school to celebrate this historic day and a wonderful carnival atmosphere was created.

Paddy Molloy, along with the youngest pupil, Dana Nic Giolla Chomhaill, and the eldest pupil, Ciara Nic Daibhéid raised the flag in front of a large attendance.

The theme of recycling and energy-saving was then greatly highlighted when both pupils and staff took part in a ‘recycled’ fashion show which was enjoyed immensely by everyone present.

The creativity of the pupils certainly came to the fore with their ‘fashion’ ideas which showed the use of many recycled items from newspaper to plastic.

The Parent’s Association once again provided everyone with refreshments and everyone returned home delighted with the day.

INISHOWEN PRIMARY SCHOOL SELECT TO FACE DERRY CITY SCHOOLS IN UNIQUE CHALLENGE MATCH

GAA BALLWhile it may almost be time to put the schoolbooks away for the long waited summer holidays, schoolboys in Inishowen who play Gaelic Football have one more big date to pencil in before that happens.

A unique challenge game between the schools in Inishowen and their counterparts in the Derry City area has been arranged as part of the 10 years celebration of coaching in the primary schools of Inishowen.

The game which should be a memorable occasion for these young boys has been set for Celtic Park in Derry on Wednesday evening 2nd July with a throw in time of 7.00 pm.

It is also hoped a girl’s game can be arranged at a later date.

As part of the 10 years celebrations, Inishowen Schools Coaches John Gibbons and Leo Gill with the help of a number of club coaches, held blitzes over 3 days for boys and girls attending schools in North and South Inishowen, who were all part of the Schools Coaching Scheme.

The North Inishowen blitzes, held in Carndonagh were a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who participated.

It was much the same story in Buncrana, for the schools in the South Inishowen area.

Both areas then selected a panel to take part in a finals blitz day, which was also in held in Foden in Carndonagh.

The coaches then sat down to select a panel of boys and girls who would represent Inishowen team if and when a representative game could be arranged.

Neil Forester, Games Development Officer with the Derry County Board was more than interested in helping to arrange a challenge game, as he and Paul Simpson were bringing to an end for the year, their school programme in the Derry City schools.

They will select a panel from schools in the Derry City Council area and play under the name of City Oaks, which is their equivalent of a GAA Academy before moving on to County Development squads.

A similar game did take place some years ago as between Inishhowen and a Derry Select as a curtain raiser to the U16 Buncrana Cup Final, with Inishowen winning comfortably on that occasion.

The Inishowen panel of thirty players is drawn from a total of nineteen schools and indications are, they should be able to give a good account of themselves, with those leaving primary school this week and going on to secondary school, hoping to make the step up to Colleges football with the Colaisti Inis Eoghain Corn na nOg team in September.

Everyone is encouraged to go along and show your support for the boys, especially parents, family members, schoolteachers and club members.

In order to prepare for the game, John Gibbons and Leo Gill have requested the following panel of players to attend a training session at The Scarvey in Buncrana on Wednesday evening at 5.40 pm to be on the pitch at 6.00 pm sharp, finishing at 7.15 pm.

O’Donnell Park Letterkenny was selected as a regional host venue for 8 of the participating teams in the Group stage matches of the under-14 All-Ireland Feile na nGael hurling festival 2014 which took place at Ulster venues over the recent mid-summer weekend.

Over 168 hurling teams from clubs throughout Ireland including entries from clubs overseas participated in an event that is recognised as one of the great spectacles of the GAA summer calendar.

The St. Eunan’s hurling Féile organising committee with its attention to detail excelled both on and off the field to ensure a superb experience for the 8 participating teams and their supporters at the regional qualifying stage matches for both the Cup and Shield competitions at the sun-splashed Letterkenny venue.

Participating teams at the Letterkenny venue included Donegal representatives St. Eunan’s and Buncrana, Clough Ballacolla , Laois; Tommy Larkin’s, Galway; Derry representatives, Na Magha and Banagher; St.Earnan’s, Westmeath and Dublin club Castleknock.

Blessed with ideal weather conditions the event was a resounding success with the spirit of Féile fun and participation in evidence throughout at the O’Donnell Park event played over Friday evening and all day Saturday.

A positive buzz and a genuine grassroots community spirit was present throughout the excellently organised event.

The quality of the on-field hurling skills from all the participating teams was matched in equal measure with the quality of the off-field catering arrangements where the St. Eunan’s hurling Feile organising committee left no stone unturned in providing a variety of foods and refreshments for the visiting teams and supporters.

Great credit and thanks is due to the generous Letterkenny businesses who sponsored the variety of foods on offer which was augmented by the contributions from the host club’s families and friends.

The St. Eunan’s club volunteers who served up the foods from the tented stalls deserve rich accolades; being in attendance on the Friday evening and all-day Saturday.

The previous Sunday morning’s cake sale and coffee morning fundraiser set the buzz and tone which was to characterise the host club’s first-class event.

Thanks is also due to the families who hosted the hurlers from Laois club Clough Ballacolla.

The excellent playing surfaces of the O Donnell Park and adjoining training grounds provided a firm sod for the high-octane displays of hurling skills and competitive spirit from these whole-hearted under-14 grade players.

Superb goals and points of the short and long range variety were on a display and none better than the score of the day from St.Eunan’s player Shane O Donnell in a match versus Inishowen’s Buncrana.

Shane won possession some fifty metres from the opposing goal and balancing the sliothar on his hurl, sprinted some 30 metres before unleashing a wonder strike to the roof of the net.

Buncrana ran out very narrow winners in this superb group game with due credit to both sides for a titanic encounter.

Abundant hurling skills, teamwork and sportsmanship was in evidence from all 8 teams and following the quarter- final stages the qualifying teams who went forward to the finals hosted in Armagh and Owenbeg Derry were as follows: Shield: Clough Ballacolla, Laois and Westmeath’s, St.Earnan’s. Cup qualifiers were Na Magha, Derry and Castleknock, Dublin .

Following the Letterkenny stage; the St. Eunan’s Hurling Féile Committee, hosted an evening of entertainment and a meal for their visiting club Clough Ballacolla, Laois at the Arena 7 complex.

Players and supporters from both teams enjoyed a sociable gathering where the two club managements expressed their thanks for the manner in which, the event was organised.

Team mentors Fergal Finn and Gordon Randles expressed their pride in both the performances of the players and the level of support from their families in hosting a very enjoyable and successful hurling event.

Pauric Daly, St. Eunan’s Minor Board chairman commended the teamwork from everyone involved in ensuring a very successful Féile na nÓg 2014 hurling weekend in O’Donnell Park.

He thanked the local businesses, families and friends of the club who supported the catering provided for the visiting teams and their supporters.

It was a win-win event for participants and spectators and in particular for our young hurlers and their management team whose skills and commitment were clearly evident throughout the weekend.

A big thank-you to the Local Letterkenny Companies who supported the Féile 2014 at the O’Donnell Park venue with Food and Facilities.
